KCU SPRING TERM 2020 COURSE LEAFLET FREE EDUCATION AND TRAINING COURSES KCU ENROLMENT Enrolment for courses is open from Monday 6 th January 2020 by telephone 01536 481989 or email kcu@kcultd.org.uk If you would like to enrol in person, please come along on Wednesday 8th January 2020 9:30am to 11:30am At Fuller Baptist Church, Gold Street Kettering, NN16 8JB ESOL Beginners This course is ideal if you are new to English. It will teach you all the basics to start in the language and prepare for further English courses. Course Starts Monday 13th January 9:30am – 11:30am for 10 weeks Upcycling – Working With Fabric During this course you will use fabric to make a simple baby quilt or a play mat. You will learn how to use a sewing machine, as well as hand stitching to gain confidence throughout the course. You can work as part of a team to make a quilt or play mat or you can work individually. The finished items will be given to the Dignity in Crisis project for vulnerable families. Course Starts Wednesday 15th January 9:30am – 11:30am for 6 weeks Please note that this course takes place on the first floor


Coping With Change This eight-hour course over four weeks will explore the cycle of change and ways we can positively accept change. By the end of the course, you will understand the change process and be able to use a technique to reduce the stress involved in change. Course Starts Monday 13th January 1:00pm – 3:00pm for 4 weeks Developing Communication Skills Develop your communication skills so you can communicate effectively with others. Understand how the rules of body language can support verbal communication to enable you to become a more effective communicator. Course Starts Monday 24th February 1:00pm – 3:00pm for 4 weeks Mindfulness This four-hour course over two weeks will introduce the ideas behind mindfulness and explore mindfulness techniques to reduce your stress levels. By the end of the course, you will have identified four techniques that may help you in your everyday life. Course Starts Monday 23rd March 1:00pm – 3:00pm for 2 weeks Confidence Building In this five-week course, we will explore the things we are good at, the good that is already present in our lives and find ways to keep our outlook sunny. By the end of the course, you should feel more capable of setting goals and working towards achieving them. Course Starts Wednesday 26th February 10:00am – 12:00pm for 5 weeks Interview Skills This one day Interview Skills Workshop will help jobseekers to prepare for interviews, practice answering common questions and take part in a mock panel interview as both the interviewer and the interviewee. By the end of the session you should have greater understanding of what interviewers are looking for and greater confidence of your own ability to shine in an interview. This single day workshop will be running twice. Thursday 27th February 10:00am – 4:00pm Thursday 26th March 10:00am – 4:00pm Please note that this course takes place on the first floor


Functional Skills English and Maths Qualification Are you interested in gaining a qualification in either English or Maths? We will be offering four-week brush up sessions in both English and Maths that may lead to City & Guilds qualification courses in Functional English and Maths that may last a further 22 to 26 weeks. You need to be committed to the course and be aware that there will be an end of course assessment. Please be aware that these courses are unsuitable for beginners of English as a Second Language (ESOL) To be eligible for these free courses you will need to be:  Over the age of 19 at the beginning of the course  Have lived in the UK (EU) for at least three years  Have received a grade lower than C in GCSE or equivalent in the subject of study You will undertake an initial assessment whilst on the four-week brush up course to indicate at what level you are working. This also forms part of the moving forward process and the tutors will be happy to help you with your options. You can do one of the courses or both if you choose to. They have been designed in response to employers’ requirements that learners achieve a firm grounding in the basics. The course is preparation for a qualification at Level 1, if appropriate. The purpose of the Functional Skills qualification in ICT is to ensure that learners develop understanding and skills in:  Using ICT – Interacting with ICT; manage storage; safety and security  Finding and selecting information – Internet searches; Selecting and Evaluating results  Developing, presenting and communicating information – Selecting appropriate software; email; combine information for presentation; evaluate ICT tools You will need to be committed to the course and be aware there is an end of course assessment.
