EDITOR’S LETTER NEW TIMES, NEW DIRECTIONS There can be no doubt that the much-chronicled economic crisis is causing new ripples across the world’s intertwined business-industrial fabric. What’s more, it is leading us towards new ways of performing, proceeding with and creating business. It would seem that nothing is exempt from these change-inducing agents. From the top down, no type of service can escape this critical situation. It is true that the last sector, the tertiary segment that encompasses our sector, the meetings industry (M.I.), is precisely the one economic experts say is being most affected by the current although mostly contained circumstances, yet ones experienced by the vast majority of countries in the world. It is also true that in the last few months of this year economic indicators have been timidly pointing towards improvement and what at first seemed to be tiny green shoots of economic reactivation are being confirmed as an ever-so-slight recovery, but a recovery all the same. Yet it is indeed true that this recovery is only being registered in a handful of European countries and the USA. So we expect and we hope, for the good of all our businesses, that the rhythm of this initial recovery doesn’t hit a pitfall and serves as a confidence booster leading us on the up and up. However, until the much-awaited recovery arrives, the circumstances which we are experiencing coincide with new times in the world economy, new times in business activities, new times in managing and promoting our “public image”, and new times in which we must reflect and put forth new ways and models of doing things, so that once it is all over, companies, entities and the economy in general emerge in better shape. And our M.I sector must not be left out. To the contrary, it has to try at all costs to get through this complicated situation not only temporarily but also structurally. Innovation, the capacity to generate new ideas and concepts, applying synergies and ways of “clustering” are all good starting points to survive this “crisis” situation, which we must not only see in terms of danger and risk, but also as a tremendous opportunity and challenge to try to reposition ourselves for a better future. One can discern this future as one where “softer” criteria will be prioritized over harder ones. And Spain must not stay on the sidelines, as its vast experience as a tourist destination and expertise in the Meetings Industry ensures it will act along these lines, replacing flexibility with rigidity when it comes time to close the deal. So objectively speaking, I assure that this is the right time to make use of this “soft” course of direction. JOSÉ ALARCÓN

RIOJAFORUM: FOUR YEARS, 720 EVENTS

grand total of 436,036 people attended 720 events held between 2004 and 2008. This is the overall balance of affairs at Riojaforum, the architecturally-minded complex composed of the La Rioja Convention Center and Auditorium, which will blowing out the candles on its fifth anniversary. Of the 729 events registered in its first four years, 572 were congresses, while 148 had a cultural component, according to Riojaforum sources. As for 2009, the complex has plans to welcome a total of 21 congresses and conventions. For the moment, between January and June, the La Rioja Convention Center and Auditorium has already attracted a total of 51,000 participants.

he Sant Angelo Hotel, located in Barcelona’s Eixample and previously part of the NH group, has joined the Apsis hotel chain. This three-star establishment with 50 guestrooms is located alongside Plaza España and the Barcelona-Montjuic Fairgrounds. In addition to its excellent location for business travelers, the Angelo also appeals to leisure guests, given to its proximity to key tourist and cultural sights such as the Montjuic Fountains, the Joan Miró Foundation and the Catalonia National Museum of Art.

he sixth edition of the International Cultural Tourism Fair & City Break (FITC & City Break), held between the 17th and 20th of September in the Malaga Convention Center and Fairgrounds (FYCMA), will fe-

ature this year its first workshop on Tourism Employment and Training in Andalusia in collaboration with Turijobs.com, the leading tourism sector employment website in Spain. The workshop will set up interviews between 30 national tourism companies and about one hundred candidates from all over Andalusia. On the other hand, FITC & City Break will also convene another year’s edition of the Cultural Tourism & City Break Workshop among the marketing-oriented days that open the event’s professional program. A type of inverse exchange held in collaboration with Turespaña and Turismo Andaluz, there will be meetings between Spanish culture-tourism representatives and a group of 80 national and international buyers and tour-operators specialized in cultural and city tourism.

THE GRANADA CONVENTION CENTER SIGNS ON WITH THE ENVIRONMENT ISO

MEETINGS WITH A SEA VIEW AND TRULY RELAXING VACATIONS AT THE IBEROSTAR EL MIRADOR GRAND HOTEL

he Granada Convention Center was the fifth complex in Spain to attain ISO 14001:2004 certification in 2009 an internationally accepted set of standards establishing how to implement a efficient environmental management system that strikes a balance between managing a profit and reducing one’s environmental impact. Such a distinction gives new recognition to the Granada Convention Center, one the first three in Spain to attain in 2005 the “Q” for Quality Standards bestowed by the Institute of Quality Spanish Tourism. Adopting the ISO standards means the Center will enhance its use of alternative energy systems such as solar energy, its periodic control of atmospheric emissions, and monitoring the quality of what it deposits in the sewer system, among other important measures. With this in mind, Eva Fernández, the Center’s director, has underscored the goal of the Granada Convention Center “to always be able to move forward in adopting quality control policies that give us a distinguishing trait in a ever more competitive marketplace”.

ELCHE AND FUERTEVENTURA JOIN THE SCB

T

he Spain Convention Bureau (SCB) has admitted the candidacy of Elche and Fuerteventura for their entry in the organization, currently grouping together 41 Spanish convention cities. The SCB released the news during its annual assembly held this past June in the Kursaal Convention Center Auditorium in San Sebastian, where it was also announced that Zaragoza would be the site of the 2010 Assembly. The SCB’s main objective is primarily to promote the exchange of experiences between member cities in this tourist sector, but it also take measures towards promoting the cities nationally and internationally.

MÁLAGA, SIXTH PLACE IN HOSTING CONVENTION

M

álaga has positioned itself as the sixth most appealing destination for hosting conventions from 500 to 1000 people. This fact was confirmed by Óscar Cerezales, MPI president (Meeting Professional International) in a meeting held to analyze the current state of convention and meeting tourism in the Malaga Convention Center and Fairgrounds (FYCMA) this past summer. At the gathering, which was also attended by the Center’s directors and Ramzy Shuaibi, the director of Leading Sense, a consulting company specialized in business tourism, Cerezales attributed this well-earned sixth place to Malaga’s “climate and competitive prices in respect to other cities with similar characteristics, plus its good access, infrastructure and hotel capacity". As for the crisis, the central theme the debate centered on, Cerezales indicated that the downturn was having a “more significant impact” on the corporate sector rather than associations and “more squarely on bigger cities than smaller ones".

THE MADRID INTERCONTINENTAL HOTEL UNVEILS FIVE SUITES

F

our Presidential Suites, 140 m2 each, and a 400-m2 Royal Suite are the newest summer attractions at the Madrid Intercontinental Hotel. The new accommodations, all with spectacular views over the Paseo de la Castellana, have been designed by the prestigious London decorating firm, J2. The rates for the Presidential Suites reach 3,000 € per night and include 24-hour personal butler service, private chef and transport in a Mercedes S-class. As for the Royal Suite, it is found on the building’s top floor and a stay here costs around 9,000 € per night.

FIRE IN THE SKIES OF TARRAGONA

F

or another year Tarragona became the world capital of firework displays. Last July, the sky over Tarragona’s Miracle Beach became the stage for the twentieth edition of the International Fireworks Festival. For five days, three Valencia companies, (Pirotècnia Hermanos Caballer, Pitotècnia Martí, S.L. and Pirotècnia Caballer), an Austrian firm (Feuerwerke Jost) and an Italian outfit (Fabbricha Fuochi La Tirrena Sas) displayed their creations, the three having been selected among 25 candidates during the contest’s preliminary phase.

IRISH JOURNALISTS DISCOVER THE ALLURE OF THE RIOJAALAVES WINE ROUTE

A

group of Irish journalists belonging to different general and tourist media outfits took a week-long tour of landmark villages in Vitoria-Gasteiz and the Rioja-Alaves Wine Route. The program featured visits to the localities of Lapuebla de Labarca, Labastida, Laguardia and Samaniego, among others. During this time, the Irish journalists were able to get a taste of the culinary riches of the Rioja-Alaves region by heading to both restaurants and wine cellars to sample their

products firsthand. Along with these gastronomic visits, the guests were shown the wide variety of impeccable hotels and health and beauty centers the area has to offer. In general, the English-speaking market, and the Irish one in particular, have long received a highly attractive tourism pitch broadcast from both regions, Rioja-Alaves and VitoriaGasteiz. In previous years, representatives from Alaves tourist agencies have carried out promotional activities on Irish soil.

PARADOR HOTELS TO MODERNIZE ITS AIGUABLAVA AND TORTOSA ESTABLISHMENTS

arador Hotels are to invest 26 million euros in Catalonia to provide the latest comforts and technology to its Tortosa and Aiguablava establishments, as was announced this October by the president of Tourism Paradors, Miguel Martínez. Once the renovations have finished, the Parador Hotel of Tortosa will have seventy spacious guestrooms, a modern urban spa and a convention center to host business events and meetings. The convention center will be a 360-square meter hall with unfolding walls able to divide the space into four different rooms. Another new feature at the Parador will be the so-called Unique Room located in the tower topping the Tortosa building, which will have three floors and a living room, a bath with sauna and hydro-massage, and a sundeck with a fabulous view. For its part, the

Parador Hotel of Aiguablava will receive a complete renovation so as to provide the establishment with the latest technology, plus redecorating and redistributing the rooms to improve mobility. The entire electric and plumbing systems will also be renovated in order to improve energy and water savings. Weathering the Crisis On the other hand, the 93 unique establishments forming part of the Parador Tourist Hotels of Spain saw their index of occupancy rise in July and August to 77.8%, 2% higher than the same period of the previous year. All in all, the chain sold 275,704 beds, 15,000 more than 2008 with and an 11.40% increase in domestic guests. As for foreign clientele, there has been a 2.55% increase; while the number of Germans, French, Japanese and Americans rose, the amount of English guests saw a decrease. The Parador Hotel president, Miguel Martínez, announced this data at a press conference held last September at the Hostal de San Marcos in León. “We are quite satisfied as it demonstrates that in these trying times, the Parador brand has not only stayed afloat, but also seen its prestige bossted and solidified within and beyond our frontiers.”

ight enclaves are marked along this artistic-historic passage through Galicia’s noble past, all easily accessible from anywhere in Galicia: the Quiñones de León Pazo-Museum (Vigo), Soutomaior Castle, the pazos of Rubiáns (Vilagarcía de Arousa) and A Saleta (Meis), Pazo de Oca (A Estrada), the Rosalía de Castro House-Museum (Padrón), the pazos of Santa Cruz de Ribadulla and Ortigueira (Vedra) and the Pazo de Mariñán (Bergondo). Some of these also make an appealing alternative for hosting meetings and incentive trips, as they have been properly outfitted to hold events and large celebrations, banquets or receptions. In any case, all of them stand out for their abundance of camellias, either freestanding varietes or one arranged in evocative promenades.

On the camellia trail Such an abundance of camellias is evidence of a deep-rooted tradition in Galicia, where for over two centuries it has been the primary ornamental plant in parks, gardens and orchards. Flowering during the winter months, this Oriental-native became 19-century literature and opera’s flower of impossible love. So venerated is the camellia that every year in Rías Baixas a flower show is held which attracts some of the world’s top growers. The camellia thus becomes the common thread of pleasant strolls that captivate with such discoveries as Methuselah, the oldest Camellia japonica (Quiñones de León Pazo-Museum), the impressive botanical garden at Soutomaior Castle (more than a hundred varieties of camellias, thousand-year-old chestnut trees, gigantic magnolias, sequoias, Chile pines, lime trees…), the center of pilgrimage for Galician literature that the birthplace of Rosalía de Castro in Padrón has become, or the invaluable collection of contemporary Galician paintings in the Quiñones de León Pazo-Museum. Humming with exciting tales of wars, divied loyalties and special favors, each site has its own unique charm no matter how far from these times their current uses and owners may be. The 18th-century Pazo de Rubiáns stands out for its neatly-planned forest, fields and garden. That of A Saleta, with specimens from every continent and a wide variety of camellias, exudes the passion its current owners have for gardening, while the Pazo de Santa Cruz de Ribadulla, near Santiago de Compostela, makes an exuberant display with its waterfall, forest and magnificent camellia plantation, a hint at how important wholesale flower production is to the area. Water plays a predominant ro-

le in the gardens of the Pazo de Oca, one of the most-visited in Galicia, crisscrossed by a large pond, while those of Mariñán are a picture of French-style refinement.

Other unique spots Nevertheless, these eight enclaves are just an example of the magnificence of the many unique sites to be discovered in Galicia, each competing with another in terms of the architectural value of their buildings, or the design and botanical riches of their gardens. This is why one must not miss out such elegant pazos such as San Lorenzo de Trasouto in the heart of Santiago de Compostela, or Señoráns in Meis and Fefiñáns in Cambados – both closely tied to the ancient wine-making traditions of the O Salhes Valley. All make superb settings to host concerts or thematic dinners and place the gold brooch atop any event. In topping off this inviting tourist attraction based on the heritage of Galicia’s noble lineage, the winter garden route has yet another ace up its sleeve; an impressive network of one-of-a-kind accommodations available in the immediate surroundings. Many of the old noble’s residences, convents and monasteries have been converted into rural tourism establishments or Parador Hotels, characterized in part by their elegant accommodations and faith in the local cuisine and regional wines. Wine-tasting at a Rías Baixas Denomination of Origin bodega or sampling seafood onboard a fishing vessel bobbing over the shellfish bed of the Ría de Arousa are just some of the many possibilities abounding along the winter garden route, undoubtedly an example of the connection between sea and land that comprises the very essence of Galicia.

Destinations Canary Islands

M

ention the Canaries and one speaks of a land of contrasts, beautiful beaches, immense pine forests, and thousandyear-old trees. This is in addition to the cultural and artistic heritage with an immense historical value and the openness of the islanders. The islands have always been the place of travelers from all over the globe, and perhaps this is why their name is synonymous with mixed races and sociability. It is well known that the Canaries have a large number of hotel facilities. Along with the luxury hotels on the sea, we can also find a great deal of city hotels and historic establishments, and still others located in the beautiful countryside. Only on Grand Canary Island are there nearly 160,000 hotel beds, 28,000 of them in the four and five star category. If this were not enough, flight connections are excellent, providing easy access to this archipelago from major Spanish cities and the rest of Europe. The estimated flight time from the peninsula is just under two hours and around four when traveling to most other major European capitals. As for the international airports on Fuerteventura, Lanzarote, Tenerife, Grand Canary, Hierro and La Palma, these are located just a few minutes from their main tourist centers.

The Canaries and the Meetings Industry With all this it is easy see how, in addition to being an excellent option for a leisure trip, the Canary Islands are a highly recommendable and ideal destination for professional gatherings. This quintessential setting also makes a generous offer when hosting congresses, conventions, fairs, meetings, receptions or product presentations. With this in mind, Grand Canary surely stands out. The capital, Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, is the nerve center with its modern network of hotels showcasing multipurpose halls in different sizes equipped with the latest technology, plus other site well-suited for any nature of event. On the other hand, and serving as an example, is the neighboring isle of Tenerife. Not to be left behind in terms of hotel establishments offering specific spaces for hosting meetings, there is the Grand Hotel Bahía del Duque Resort**** in the town of Adeje with twelve meeting halls, or even the Hotel Botánico***** in Puerto de la Cruz. But Tenerife has an extra added value; its immense natural resources, the highlight certainly being Cañadas del Teide National Park. The long

An ocean of specific spaces To carry out the many different types of company events, Grand Canary has a network of modern centers available. The Grand Canary Convention Center (INFECAR) has a 70,000-m² surface area, plus several pavilions in addition to the main building that complement each other such as the reception hall, the pressroom and individual offices to cover protocol and informative services. The Alfredo Kraus Auditorium, built by the Catalan architect Oscar Tusquets, rises over the Playa de las Canteras, one of the island’s most emblematic beaches. The

BACKED BY THE ‘Q’ FOR QUALITY The Canaries are located atop the ranking among Spanish tourist destinations in terms of services and facilities backed by the “Q” for Quality, bestowed by the Institute for Quality Spanish Tourism (ICTE). The establishments recently awarded this recognition are the Santa Brígida Hotel School, the Bali, Bistro Montes and Cumbres Canarias/Tarahales restaurants and the El Castañar de Doramas, Doramas and Mirador de Doramas country inns on Grand Canary, the Atlantis Palace Hotel on Fuerteventura, the Princesa Yaiza Resort on Lanzarote and the Dreamplace Gran Tacande Hotel on Tenerife. In step with this line of action, the Tourism Ministry continues to invest in the implementation of these quality standard systems on the islands, given the number of solicitudes to attain this seal of approval have shown no signs of abating.

Destinations Canary Islands

The mice facilities on most of the islands are highly prestigious, due to their being top-notch facilities with sizes well-suited to meet all requirements auditorium has fourteen meeting halls for a capacity of 3,465 guests. One of its main attractions is the Symphonic Hall with 100-m2 windows located directly behind the stage with a superb view of the ocean. Rounding up the facilities is the Maspalomas Convention Center on the southern part of the island, just a few steps from the Las Dunas Nature reserve. This 14,000-m² multifunctional space has twenty four conference rooms. Grand Canary also has its so-called Unique Sites, which are areas for congressional activity located in privileged settings spread around the island. One of them is the Casa de Colón in the historic neighborhood of Vegueta, an architectural compound highlighted by the Governor’s

House, over five centuries old. Another building is the Literary Bureau founded in 1844, an enormous building decorated with Neoclassical and Modernist details which has halls capable of holding up to 250 guests. The Canaries Saving Bank Initiative Center (CICCA), located in a 19th-century building in the Triana neighborhood, is currently a small convention center with the latest technology available and capacity for 500 people. Finally, the Paraninfo of the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria near the Vegueta neighborhood has a meeting hall able to hold 600. As for Tenerife, the island also has important facilities for these purposes. Proof can be found in the 40,000 m² of the International Fairgrounds Convention Center with its 12,000-m2 Grand Hall, five differently sized halls and two lobbies. In Puerto de la Cruz, there is another convention center that bears the town’s name and has four halls, the largest of which has the ability to hold a thousand guests. The La Pirámide Convention Center in Arona with over twenty halls, the Auditorium of Tenerife with its Main Hall for more than 1,600 spectators and the Chamber Music Hall, the Tenerife South Convention Center or Magma Art & Congresses on the island’s southern half, and the Donaire Room in Costa Adeje complete the range of facilities able to welcome all types of professional events. On the other hand, the island of Lanzarote provides congress-goers with the impressive Jameos del Agua Auditorium in the natural caverns of the same name. This space is over 1,000 m2 in size and has room for 600 people. Another option is the House of Volcanoes Room, with somewhat smaller dimensions and room for 45 conventioneers. Also, the capital Arrecife has been planning to build a new convention center. Finally, the Fuerteventura Island Auditorium, located on this island of endless white-sand beaches, has 2 halls with space for 565 and 100 people, a lobby and a 350-m2 courtyard. And of course, all the islands of this Spanish archipelago have more than enough ideas to arrange any type of incentive trip at each of these excellent destinations, whether for business or pleasure. With this idea in mind, all the islands have superb natural settings to carry out, for example, any type of outdoor training or teambuilding activities not to mention a great deal of specialized companies.

The most convincing response has come with the recent creation of the Lloret Convention Bureau, an initiative from the city government, represented by Lloret Turisme, and the private sector, through the Lartet convention and Events Association encompassing over 40 business directly related to the MICE segment. The bureau’s main objective is to promote the city as an outstanding destination on the Costa Brava to host events, meetings, congresses, conventions and incentive trips. Among those forming part of this new institution are convention centers, hotels, restaurants, specialized service agencies, unique facilities, and other agents related to culture, entertainment and other activities.

The best sign to show Lloret’s push for the Meetings Industry is the creation of the Lloret convention bureau, a city hall and private sector initiative.

The Meeting Industry, as everyone knows, requires an array of well-structured products such as golf, health, fine food, or culture, all of which Lloret has plenty of experience and options to offer. ith everythins set to go, the pistol is ready to sound for the fleet of forty vessels taking part in the Atlantic Grand Prix Cádiz-Santo Domingo, organized by a firm specialized in these nautical events, Difusión Náutica. This sole Spanish transatlantic regatta is a must for all those longing to live the intensity of an oceanic sailing adventure through the trade winds. 2010’s first nautical event starts on January 9th, when the vessels depart from Cádiz Bay and set their sails for Santo Domingo, traveling the 3,800 miles to complete the voyage.

January 3rd, 4th, 7th, and 8th will be hectic days full of activity, such as the obligatory safety checks and standard measurement of all participating sailboats. The regatta is to start at 13:00, with the first objective being the crossing to Rubicón Marina. After the regatta’s January 9th start in the waters of Cádiz Bay, the vessels set sail for Rubicón Marina, Lanzarote, obligatory stopover for all participants before heading across the Atlantic. The participants compete during this leg of the race for the Rubicón Marina Trophy.

The Grand Prix backers Once again, H.M. Juan Carlos I has accepted the Presidency of Honor for the Cádiz-Santo Domingo Regatta, which also relies on the collaboration of the RFEV, the FAV, the Dominican Sailing Federation, and special collaboration from the Barcelona International Boat Show, ADIN, ANEN, the City of Cádiz, the City of Puerto de Santa María, Puerto Sherry, Rubicón Marina and San Souci Marina in the port of Santo Domingo, the Grand Prix’s port of arrival. The Dominican Republic also lends its support to this nautical event through its Secretary of Tourism and the Santo Domingo Port Authority. As for Cronomar, the company will contribute to the regatta by offering the winners of this edition a prestigious Oris watch.

AN EVENT WITH THREE PORTS OF CALL The first Spanish nautical event of the year is a transatlantic regatta, the Atlantic Grand Prix, tracing by three ports with a long Atlantic tradition: Puerto Sherry (Cádiz Bay), Port Marina Rubicón on Lanzarote Island, and Puerto Sans Souci in the Dominican Republic. Making the most of three ports of call so different yet united by this grand event is one of the greatest attractions of this unique event open to sailors, charter boat companies and incentive trip agencies.

Port of departure: Sherry Puerto Sherry, one of the best marinas in the Atlantic, has a long tradition in organizing nautical festivals and events and will be the port of departure for this grand Spanish transatlantic regatta, set for January 9th, 2010. This is the most important race held in the country, one with a significant number of vessels and crews participating year after year, all who have a point of encounter and reception at Puerto Sherry. A privileged setting in Cadiz Bay, the port is well-prepared to ready the regatta’s departure, largely due to its accumulative experience of years in organizing these types of events, not to mention having a surrounding area well worth enjoying before setting off on such a long voyage: Puerto de Santa Maria, Chipiona, and the city of Cádiz itself.

Port of transit: Rubicón Rubicón Marina on the Canary island of Lanzarote is another hub of this Atlantic Grand Prix, as it is an obligatory stop for the fleet. Rubicón Marina, one of the top marinas on the eastern side of Lanzarote, is the base of many a nautical gathering and obligatory stopover for countless vessels before setting sail for the Americas; an ideal place of rest before making the great leap across “the pond”. The port of Rubicón, near the volcanoes on the unique landscape of Tinamfaya Park, the beaches of Papagayo, and the vineyards of La Geria, is the perfect setting to spend a day’s rest and make preparations before the long voyage ahead. Many participants in this regatta opt for “losing” a few hours, or perhaps gaining is a better word, on the subsequent leg to further enjoy this port of call featuring so many sailor comforts.

Port of arrival: Sans Souci The third port of call for sailors on this transatlantic regatta retracing the nautical route of Christopher Columbus on his voyage of “discovery” is the San Souci Marina in the Port of Santo Domingo. The port of arrival and end of the regatta, this is where the navigators who have crossed the Atlantic are given a warm welcome. Thanks to the marina’s predisposition towards gatherings and fun, it makes a great place for hosting a celebration for those crews having achieved their objective of crossing the Atlantic. The Sans Souci Marina, facing the colonial city of Santo Domingo from the entrance of the Dominican port, becomes the indispensable complement for the regatta participants who can make the most of the city’s colonial history, Caribbean flavor and hotspots. Long a beacon for yachts sailing the Caribbean, proven by the fact this is not the first time the city has served as the port of arrival for sailors in the Atlantic Grand Prix.

Stefania Recchi director of The Way to Spain

Born in Milan 37 years ago, and with experience as a company manager she studied Economy at the Universittà Cattolica del Sacro Cuore in Milán, and later did her MBA in Hotel & Tourist Management in the Maastrich School of Management in Holland. In Amsterdam, she worked for two years at Delta Travel Amsterdam. How many people work at The Way to Spain? Just me. I’m the person who searches for and tests out the restaurants, hotels, and event locations... and I’m the one who decides what services to provide through The Way to Spain. I am definitely the one who has direct client contact. The result is a highly customized and personalized product. Along with me is a large freelance staff who are very good at the activities they do and come together depending on what each project requires. What is primary activity of The Way to Spain? What we mostly do is the incoming needs for business trips, organizing everything necessary for a company gathering, whether it is a congress, tradeshow, or any other type of meeting happening in Barcelona. Incentive trips are one of our specialties where we try to bring all of our inventiveness to providing a product which is different, interesting and creative. What types of companies are interested in arranging incentive trips or events in Barcelona? All kinds of companies. For example, we work with a pharmaceutical company that comes to do a course in Barcelona every year, so each time they come, we plan their stay in the city to be as pleasurable and worthwhile as possible. We recently had the “top dealers”

from Pirelli in Japan, who came to see the Catalonia Rally, as Pirelli is one of the race sponsors. They spent five days in Catalonia, two in Barcelona, two in Tarragona, and an entire day at the rally. What countries are most interested in holding events in Spain? For the moment, The Way to Spain has only tapped the Italian market, but thanks to our collaboration with an agency in Valencia, we’ve also dealt with clients from France and Holland, which are the company’s regular customers. We have an agreement that if an Italian client wants to hold an event in Valencia, we recommend this company to them, and when they know of a French or Dutch client hoping to organize and incentive trip to Barcelona, they recommend us. How is the economic crisis affecting you? We started out at the height of the crisis, but as we’re a really small company, we can look for customized programs and take care of all the details – they become nearly personalized programs. Yes, there is a crisis, but I’ve still been working, and if things get done right, there are opportunities to take advantage of. On the other hand, I’ve seen how the crisis has made companies seek out smaller companies which can better adapt to what they’re looking for. What’s more, we work with a lot of freelancers who help us carry out events of any size. How do you see 2010? We have a few things lined up for next year and it seems that the worst part of the crisis has already passed. In 2009, the entire sector suffered, large companies and small, but in 2010, the sector will begin to get back to normal.

“R

etailtainment” is a marketing tool consisting of making events more innovative by attempting to make an emotional impact on the customer. So Aldeasa, a leading company in airport shops, along with the Puig company and its perfume division Paco Rabanne have set up the simple concept of holding live concert in Spanish airports. The first gig was played in September by rock group the Lewis Larke Band during the times of busiest foot traffic at the Mallorca Airport. The concert stirred up plenty of interest and served to demonstrate the Black XS perfume from Paco Rabanne, whose rock ‘n roll design features heavy doses of leather and silver. With this event, both Aldeasa and Puig wanted to capture the youthful spirit of the public at hand and link their brands in a different way to surprise consumers.

or another year, the In-Edit.Beefeater Festival filled the city of Barcelona with fascinating music documentaries. A total of 44 videos were shown over the ten days the festival lasted. Among the clips that stirred up the most interest were the documentary “Johnny Cash at Folsom Prison” by director Bestor Cram and “Shadow play: the making of Anton Corbijn” by Josh Whiteman, which was an international premiere. In this seventh edition, the London Backstage section paid homage to British director Peter Whitehead by featuring some of his visionary clips like the famous “Led Zeppelin live at the Royal Albert Hall”. Other highlight of the In-Edit festival were the out-of-show documentaries, like those devoted to Woodstock or figures such as Neil Young, Phil Spector and Paul Weller.

ctober 20th and 21st the city of Elche became the national headquarters of the country’s nautical clubs and marinas, as on these two days the “Ciutat d’Elx” Convention Center hosted the second Pandora Gathering. The meeting was attended by more than half the major nautical clubs and marinas in Spain, some of which the oldest and most active members. Also in attendance were the presidents of the sector’s most representative associations. Among the most important issues in discussion at the event dwelled on the coexistence of nautical facilities and the environment, the member’s role in promoting tourism, and properly handling times of economic crisis.

BARCELONA TURNS PINK IN THE FIGHT AGAINST CANCER

T

he shop windows of a hundred businesses on Paseo de Gracia in Barcelona displayed messages to celebrate International Fight against Breast Cancer Week and raise awareness of this disease in an initiative spurred by Fero, the cancer research foundation led by Dr. José Baselga and presided by Leopoldo Rodés. From October 19th to the 24th, these windows displayed a pink ribbon with words of support and encouragement signed by personalities such as Juan Antonio Samaranch, Valentín Fuster, Ricardo Bofill, Pep Guardiola, Ainhoa Arteta, Isabel Coixet and Ferran Adrià, among many others. At the same time, the firm Mango put on sale an exclusive T-shirt designed by Jordi Labanda to help raise funds for the Fero Foundation. Conversely, the Tragaluz Group joined the International Fight against Cancer Week in Barcelona by preparing a healthy menu low in oxidants. Lastly, from October 19th to the 24th, the most remarkable buildings in the city center such as the Casa Batlló or the Majestic Hotel lit up their facades with pink ribbons, the symbol of breast cancer awareness.

he Aguas de Galicia company aimed to make its presence felt at the latest edition of Termalia, whose motto was “Submerging in the Culture of Water”, The fair was held from October 16th to the 19th at Expourense. Aguas de Galicia pitched in by sponsoring all the activities related to water at the fair. This ninth edition of Termalia, the International Meeting of Water and Thermalism, saw the presentation of Galicia’s new water law, whose objective is to have Galicians pay according to the water they use, and thus encourage the rational consumption of this resource.

rom September 11th to the 20th, the La RiojaAlaves region held its first Traditional Alaves Cuisine Days to shed some light onto the area’s great culinary tradition. Thus three restaurants in La RiojaAlaves took part in the fair by preparing special menus based on the region’s typical recipes. Each menu consisted of at least four dishes and was accompanied by the best La Rioja-Alaves wines. Some of the temptations diners might have found were sampling some baby lamb in an old bodega, or the mixed vegetables at a hotel designed by architect Frank Gehry. The days coincided with the grape harvest, so visitors could witness firsthand the Wine Festival in Paganos or local festivals in Elciego and Samaniego.

O

n the weekend of September 12th, the narrow-track railroad company Feve and the Peñaflor Neighborhood Association booked a very special trip on board a train linking Galicia to Asturias. The rail trip took place exactly fifty days after the inauguration of Feve’s unstaffed station in Peñaflor. The journey was taken onboard a climate-controlled train called the Costa Verde, whose bar and cafeteria service and large windows make it perfect to take in the passing landscape. A total of 220 people made the most of the trip, where they did some sightseeing in the towns of Ribadeo, Ortigueira and Ferrol. In this last town, the riders could also take a boat trip down the Ferrol River and discover San Felipe and Palma Castles.

T

he Andorra Supermoto GP was a complete success, largely due to the participation of the circuit’s best riders and a public completely given over to the fortunes of each competing motorcycle. For the second consecutive year, Thomas and Adrien Chareyre engraved their names on the top spots at the Gran Valira Resort. Some of the personalities who wouldn’t miss the Andorra Supermoto GP were riders Toni Elías, Ciryl Despres and Mikko Hirvonen, who eagerly followed the competition. During quieter moments of the race, there was a highly-enjoyable exhibition by professional riders such as Dani Solà. The Andorra GP will continue being a presence at Gran Valira in the Supermoto competition for the next two years, which may come to be disputed in June or July.
