PHOTO TIPS & TRICKS Snapping pictures in Skagit County can make you feel like a kid in a candy store. With weather that can go from foggy to sunny to overcast, the filter through which you capture the beauty of our diverse landscape is ever changing. We've rounded up a list of tips & tricks to help you take the best flower photos:
Quick Tips For Awesome Photos • Flowers photograph best in overcast weather. If you are planning a day in the tulips with clear skies, keep in mind where the sun is shining, so you don't get too much glare in the lens. • Create a point of interest. If you are trying to capture a flowing river, you don't want a tree trunk in the way! Move around until you get the right composition. • Try shooting your photo from a low angle aiming your camera towards the sky. This will give your picture a unique perspective and can eliminate distracting background elements. • Speaking of perspectives, try taking a few close-up shots and then take a few steps back to see the big picture. Make sure to take a few pictures that include our gorgeous mountains and maybe a barn or two. We want to see Skagit County through YOUR lense! Share your photos with us by using the hashtag #InSkagit on Facebook, Twitter or Instagram.

Chef Spotlight Ben Guadagnoli At Anelia's Kitchen & Stage in La Conner
C
hef Ben Guadagnoli gets inspiration for daily specials from the farmers markets and farm stands. He is a big believer in farm-to-table cuisine and thinks there is no greater place than the Pacific Northwest to put that into practice.
So How Did Ben Become A Chef? Ben fell in love with the culinary world by accident. A friend offered Ben a job as a line cook at a national chain. Before long Ben applied at the Oyster Creek Inn where he found a mentor in Chef Peter Belknap. In the early days, there was one person whose advice Ben counted on the most. "Sometimes when things were crazy, I'd get on the phone and reach out to my trusted mentor. 'Mom, I've got a tenderloin in the oven, how long should I cook it for medium rare?'" After the Oyster Creek Inn closed, the owners referred him to the Rhododendron Cafe. Ben really developed his green thumb and became passionate about growing the food he served to customers. What Does Ben Love About Anelia's?
LA CONNER SEAFOOD New England Clam Chowder and Caesar Salad are a match made in heaven. The creamy, homemade chowder is served with oyster crackers and crostini bread for dipping.
Ben says the live music at Anelia's gets his creative juices flowing. He loves the vibe at the restaurant, which serves family Polish recipes with fresh, local ingredients. The owners Matt and Jen let Ben flex his creative muscle. "I've done more at Anelia's artistically than anywhere else. I feel like there's something special going on at this place. It's a dream to have a wide-open kitchen and get to try new things out every day!"

PHOTO SPOTLIGHT BELLA VITA CREATIVE Photographer Dana Chrysler found her calling through a difficult life challenge: cancer.
"Surviving cancer hit home the desire to really live while I'm alive," she explained.
Thinking about her legacy, she realized that capturing and creating beauty is something she can share with others. Back then, Dana was especially drawn to nature photography, but took pictures of family and friends for fun. She never imagined becoming a portrait and wedding photographer, but that specialty has become the cornerstone of her studio, Bella Vita Creative. Dana makes sure everyone feels relaxed and special during their sessions. She uses natural light and asks her clients to pick locations meaningful to them. She offers Photo Fusion Videos, a unique way to showcase her stunning photography with video footage and music. Whether it's nature, portraits, or a wedding, Dana loves every subject she photographs. Music Spotlight Old Town Tonic Serendipitous Combination Of Five Seriously Skilled Musicians A self-described "American pop-rock band with a flair of country" Old Town Tonic is the serendipitous combination of five seriously skilled musicians. Stemming from a light-hearted open-mic collaboration at The Brown Lantern, this Anacortes band bloomed into the perfect combination of talent.
Meet the Band Marlo Lynn is the lead singer and lyricist. Learning to harmonize vocals with her brother at the age of 3, Marlo's gift of voice and songwriting are irreplaceable and her passion for singing irresistible. Forget fame and riches, Marlo's motivation for creating music is "to make people happy." Nathan McCartney plays the guitar. Hailing from nearby Whidbey Island, he's also skilled in a variety of other instruments, including bass, trombone, and harmonica. Nathan brings a background in theater, performance, and music theory. Jim Reeder plays the bass. Jim's significant studio skills enhanced production and engineering of the band's EP. 80% of the album reflects his production expertise. Originally from Philadelphia, Jim is also an active member of the Airforce. Christopher Marin plays the drums. After touring with several bands in California, Christopher agreed to play "just one show" with Old Town Tonic but couldn't resist the musical chemistry. Believe it or not, Christopher is a self-taught musician and has now been drumming for over 20 years. Dave White plays the keys. The newest member to the group, Dave has been honing his keyboard skills for over 30 years. He also makes significant contributions to the songwriting process.

More Than Music A Band With Heart Unified by a great devotion to the local community, the group has helped raise funds and rally support for homeless individuals in the area. Old Town Tonic's leadership in showing care and inclusion for all members of the community has inspired others to do the same.
Creating a unique sound experience that features soothing harmonies, fun grooves and thoughtful lyrics, it's no surprise that Old Town Tonic is experiencing rapidly growing support in Anacortes and beyond. Check out their new EP which is now available for download, and you'll be unapologetically hooked.

Lincoln Theatre
MUSIC IN SKAGIT
An article by Mararet Horak
Want to listen to some fantastic local music?
Built in 1926, the historic Lincoln Theatre was hailed for its originality and beauty. It featured a Spanish motif during a time when Egyptian and Chinese designs were popular. Its Renaissance Revival style is identified by its symmetrical facade, classical details, and sandstone construction.
The partnership of noted architect William Aitken and theatre manager Edwin Halberg ensured the interior would be as unique as the exterior. Friends and colleagues begged him to follow what the other theaters were doing, but he foresaw a time when people would tire of the ordinary. Mr. Halberg chose colors for the walls and decorative touches in the primary colors of blue, yellow, and red. If you’ve visited the Lincoln, you’ve noticed the unusual wall treatment, swirls of a plastered surface known as travertine finish with the mottled hues of natural travertine limestone. This gives the walls a very subtle glistening effect. The heart of the Lincoln Theatre is an original Wurlitzer organ, one of only two left in the United States that are 2-manual, 7rank D-2 Full Unit Orchestra models. It has a complete set of organ pipes as well as silver chimes mounted on the auditorium's painted columns. Originally, the Lincoln was built for vaudeville and silent movie shows. Today, the Lincoln presents year-round current and classic movies, as well as live concerts and theater productions. It also serves as a venue for fundraisers for local non-profit organizations. To learn more, please visit LincolnTheatre.org.

Benefit #1: FLEXIBILITY The stretching and poses in yoga help increase the lengthening of your muscles. You may notice bending down or reaching up to get something becomes easier. For first-timers or clients easing back into an exercise routine, Gentle Yoga for Beginners teaches basic poses and alignment. Vinyasa Yoga uses a series of flowing movements to improve flexibility. Benefit #2: BETTER POSTURE In this day and age, we are often hunched over laptops and cell phones, resulting in rolled shoulders and chronic neck pain ("tech neck"). Yoga poses open up the chest and shoulders, strengthen back muscles, and lengthen the spine. The result? You'll look taller, more slim, and confident. Benefit #3: IMPROVED CIRCULATION Yoga movement also stimulates your organs, enabling your lymphatic system to fight infection as well as getting your blood flowing. Quantum has classes like Hot Power Yoga and Hot 26, which not only detoxify but elevate the heart rate to get a cardio benefit as well as tone and strengthen. Visit Quantum Health & Yoga Lounge today and see how the movement in yoga can make you feel great from the inside out! Quantum Health & Yoga Lounge 121 S Spruce Street in Burlington

Chiropractic Care & Massage Treat yourself to this therapeutic combo!
A
re you doing everything you can on your journey to ultimate health? Or just "enough"? Seeking treatment for aches and pains is a great step to healing. However, you can take one step further to experience faster and more complete well-being!
Enjoy a professional massage experience with Country Clinic's massage therapist who has been on staff for over four years.
Supplementing chiropractic care with massage therapy can provide great benefits. Because chiropractic targets joints and massage targets muscles, this combo can accelerate your progress. Think of it like repairing an old car. You can't just change the oil--you should check the battery, too! One benefit is that massage assists in the application of chiropractic strategies by improving muscle relaxation, making adjustments smoother. Patients that add massage therapy also benefit from faster recovery times. This has been a common benefit for car accident injuries. Massage also improves well-being by eliminating toxins. If you adopt a sedentary lifestyle, sitting in an office environment or not working out regularly, harmful toxins can accumulate in muscle tissue. Artist Spotlight
ARTIST SPOTLIGHT LINDE HUSK Local artist Linde Husk has nurtured an immense love of drawing from an early age. She has vivid childhood memories of drawing quietly as her mother taught music classes. Her "love of drawing and creating things" led to a degree in Graphic Design. While passionate about painting during college, Linde admits she struggled with subject matter. Design became a natural choice, blooming into excellent professional success.
A decade later, Linde picked up painting once again to create gifts for friends. She quickly rediscovered her love for this art. Specializing in acrylic on canvas, Linde emphasizes the importance of learning a variety of mediums. "Paint with watercolors because you choose to, not because it is the only style you know."
Inspired by all things beautiful, Linde uses her original photography as a reference. Whether highlighting color, texture, light or shadow, Linde's artwork calls attention to beauty that often goes unnoticed. "I get excited about the tiny things that are in our world that we don't pay a lot of attention to." That focus resulted in a floral series, during which she began observing bugs. The following series on fauna, or "backyard aliens," included information particular to each critter. Recently, Linde has begun painting "landscape allusions," pieces that suggest local scenery without being photorealistic.

Non-Profit Spotlight Anacortes Family Center
T
he Anacortes Family Center (AFC) provides housing and support for women, children, and families with children. Sixty-five percent of their clients at any given time are kids. Founded in 2009, AFC operates differently than the conventional homeless shelter model.
"Our goal as a service provider is to help families and individuals become self-sufficient and ultimately not rely on social services," explains Executive Director Dustin Johnson. The Anacortes Family Center focuses on the individual as a whole person, and not just on temporary needs, in order to end the cycle of homelessness. Within 24 hours of beginning the program, the client will meet with their case manager to assess their situation and begin to break any barriers to moving forward. Anacortes Family Center 360-293-2993 2702 Commercial Avenue in Anacortes
Employment Support
Adult residents are required to secure employment within two weeks of arriving at AFC and the staff helps them write resumes, prepare for interviews, and plug into the job market.
"If a woman says she needs to find daycare for her children in order to get a job, we immediately tap into our resources to solve that problem so she can concentrate on obtaining employment." Over eighty percent of their clients leave with a permanent home and stable job. It is no wonder their success rate is the highest in the state! The Anacortes Family Center is entirely funded through community donations and support.

Non-Profit Spotlight
Once a client is employed and graduating from the homeless shelter, AFC offers three solutions to common roadblocks to assist them in gaining independence and housing.
Committed to Client Success The Anacortes Family Shelter's comprehensive program is one of the most successful shelters in the state.
Over 80% of clients move out of homelessness after going through the program. A key component in AFC's services is the goal of self-sufficiency through various pathways.
Anacortes Family Center provides housing and support for families with children. A key component in AFC's services is the goal of self-sufficiency. 1. If a client is employed and ready to move out on their own, but is short of funds for a deposit on an apartment, AFC has a revolving fund (provided by the Anacortes Rotary Club) to loan to the client. They can repay it in small increments over a long period of time to keep the fund replenished for others. 2. If a client is employed and ready to acquire housing, but still needs assistance in specific areas of their life, AFC provides after care. This monthly check-in helps clients stay on track and advance their goals.
Support AFC. Your donation will provide more than just a safe place to stay, it will provide an opportunity to learn how to live a self-sufficient life and gain a permanent home. Non-Profit Spotlight
3. If a client has graduated from the program but has a history of significant issues and no outside safety net, they are vulnerable to repeat homelessness. To give them more time to work on these challenges, AFC just opened the New Family Transformation Center, which is a 24-month program. AFC collects 30% of client's income and when they are ready to secure housing, AFC will give back the saved funds in the form of a grant.

Hadrian's Stone Design Studio and Gallery Go on an art adventure at Edison's newest art gallery. The owner of the gallery, Houston Foist, puts a special focus on local and regional artists of all mediums. An artist himself, Houston uses a proprietary material to replicate the look of granite, marble, or natural wood. His custom-designed vessel sinks, water fountains, benches, and dining room tables are on display at the gallery. "Any color, any texture, in a fraction of the time. I can make it look like natural wood or any natural stone." Houston explained. Houston invites you to visit the gallery during the first weekend of every month to experience the revealing of a new show. Featured artists provide live demonstrations and the art shows often have a charity aspect with a portion of the proceeds going to a local nonprofit. Photography Spotlight Dana Chrysler
D
ana Chrysler's varied and dynamic employment history (including a stint with the Seattle Seahawks) before she landed in visual arts shaped the kind of photographer she is today. It was her own graphic design business which first led her to pick up a camera for a job with the Mount Vernon School District. Once she and that Nikon locked eyes - it was love at first sight! Her first photography gig was for her own daughter's engagement photos and after seeing the love of this special couple on film, she knew she had found her passion. Dana specializes in life's milestones - senior photos, weddings, maternity, and family portraits. She uses natural light and meaningful locations to add beauty and a personal connection for her clients.
Dana also loves to capture the splendor of the Pacific Northwest in her fine art nature photography. "Photographing the outdoors gives me a sense of peace," she explained. She finds inspiration driving around Skagit County. She shot the front and back cover images for this issue of the In Skagit magazine on one of these creative excursions.
"I'm always looking for beautiful light - the way it shines through the stems of tulips, over the top of fields or reflects in the water."
