W

ith so many different habitats from the farmlands to the shore, Skagit Valley is the home of hundreds of bird species. The best time for bird watching is during the fall and winter when the migrating swans and eagles visit the Valley.

Samish Flats Hawks, swans, geese, owls and more! The Samish Flats is 410 acres of agricultural wetlands between Samish Island Road and Padilla Bay. This is one of the few spots in Washington where you could see five different species of falcons all on the same day! (Caution: Birders should avoid walking in any hunting

areas or fields until after January 27th.)

Fidalgo Island - Sharpe Park With so many different habitats on Fidalgo Island, it's hard to pick just one place to explore! For this article, we've picked Sharpe Park, 110 acres of undeveloped waterfront with nearly a mile of rocky shores. This park is home to eagles, falcons, juncos, sparrows, finches, hawks and harriers. For more bird watching opportunities, read the East Skagit Drive and Deception Pass Drives.

Make An Intentional Walking Plan Interview with Dr. A. Nicholas Martin, D.C., C.C.E.P.

W

alking is an underrated exercise that most people can do at any age. Getting 20-30 minutes of moderate exercise each day, like walking, can yield great improvements to overall health.

While fitness trackers may help gauge daily activity levels, they can also be deceptive, making you think you have racked up enough footsteps. For intentional walking, it is critical not to cut corners by counting odd minutes here and there throughout the day as part of your walking regimen. Instead, make this impactful exercise intentional by aiming for one 30 minute, uninterrupted walk.

In both exercise and routine, if you don't have good form, you may hurt yourself. Focus on developing good form while walking by swinging your arms naturally and developing a gentle, even stride while walking. Better posture and form means better function, which means you're less likely to become injured or suffer from chronic pain. Good health takes work, starting with making healthy choices every day. But it's worth it! By practicing intentional walking, you can improve your spinal health, enjoying increased athletic performance and greater ease of all daily activities.

JENNIFER MCGILL A Painted Love Letter to Skagit

Remember those plastic watercolor paint sets we all had as kids? For most of us, it was just an item on the school supply list. For artist Jennifer McGill, it was a gift that ignited her interest in painting. In high school, she worked in an art supply store and in college she honed her skills in the watercolor medium. A few years ago, she delved into oil painting and was instantly smitten! "It has a beautiful, gem-like quality," Jennifer explains. "It lasts for hundreds of years. I love it." Inspired by the strong compositions of 20th century American realist painters Edward Hopper and Andrew Wyeth, Jennifer focuses on telling interesting stories through the configuration of her pieces.

Jennifer has an ongoing Skagit Gem Series inspired by iconic places in Skagit County. "There is so much here; there is really endless subject matter. I could spend a lifetime painting things that are just absolutely beautiful. We live in a gorgeous place." Whether it's the Rainbow Bridge, the Swinomish Channel or the dazzling tulip fields, viewers of Jennifer's paintings instantly see their own memories captured in vivid oil colors.

FEATURED NW MUSICIAN

Karl Blau

Creative Indie Rock & Folk Musician from Anacortes, Washington

K

arl Blau is a Northwest musician known for his creative albums and ever-changing sound. Karl's music ranges from country soul to reggae to grunge to instrumental. He toured in Europe in 2016 and 2017, but you can still find him playing at the Anacortes Farmers Market.

“My sound is ever changing. That’s sort of my Achilles’ heel, but also my strength.” Karl grew up on Samish Island. He always thought he was going to be a visual artist, but in high school he found music and music found him. His morning Jazz class was his favorite part of the day and from there his obsession with music grew. His background as a visual artist still shines through in the way he puts together each album. Each album is a visual and audio art exhibit where the songs, videos and cover art make up the pieces in the collection. Karl finds his biggest musical inspiration comes from fellow artists in Anacortes, Skagit and Seattle. He is also influenced by the artists he has met in Europe and Australia while touring abroad. His favorite part of being a musician is playing music with and for other people, whether playing on stage or in private jams.

Adrift, A-town Bistro, The Brown Lantern and Taqueria La Bamba all serve great food, but Dad's Diner is his favorite eatery at the moment.

FEATURED NW NON-PROFIT

Secret Harbor in Burlington, Washington

S

uccess comes at many different levels. For Secret Harbor, a non-profit organization that provides services and programs to help children and families in Skagit county, those successes come big and small.

From keeping a kid in the same school to uniting a foster child with a new home, Secret Harbor takes working with families to a unique level by making transitions into their communities easier and safer.

Secret Harbor began over 70 years ago as a group facility on Cypress Island, according to Brian Carroll, CEO of Secret Harbor. For 50 years, a small group of people worked with children all over the country. One of their most notable programs was their residential treatment program, which was successful at helping young boys return to their families and community. However, since their problems often stemmed from their living environment, some boys returned to the program after they faced the same issues at home. In order to better serve the kids and the community, Secret Harbor began a foster care program in 1992, which gave a place for young boys to go once their behaviors improved. Since then, that foster care program expanded for both boys and girls.

T

oday, Secret Harbor offers multiple youth programs for parents to choose from, such as their foster care program, residential treatment, and in-home services.

"Teaching folks how to be successful in their own communities is what we try to do," Carroll explained. "I think the big change was in following our culture and caring for families."

Secret Harbor aims to help remove the negative stigma faced by these families and improve the local community by targeting the issues, working with the families, and helping them re-enter society.

"Everybody says life's a journey. We're not the final solution, but we are a step along that road. We want to be part of that journey with them to teach people to become better and stronger and be able to come back into society with a fresh new start."

The GardenatSecretHarbor Secret Harbor doesn’t serve every child. Secret Harbor focuses its mission, resources and energy on a small number of young people who need intensive help because they have experienced serious trauma due to abuse and neglect. Unless the problems of children are addressed, these problems grow into very big and much more expensive adult problems – which then tend to repeat from one generation to the next. Kids with troubled upbringings can be helped. An investment in a child’s well being today is a wise investment in the community’s long term health. Every child needs caring adults in their lives. The attention, love and hard work of the Secret Harbor staff and its foster parents do, in fact, make the difference in a child’s life. NW LIFE | PAGE 17

NWPhotographer HOLLY DAVISON

Stay-at-home mother and nature lover at heart, Holly Davison is a local photographer who loves the view of the night sky.

As a long time Whidbey Island resident, Davison grew up taking photos on her camera while on road trips with her family. At the time, however, she never considered herself to be a photographer. All she knew was that she loved taking photos. Then on March 22, 2014, the Oso Mudslides engulfed the rural surrounding areas, and the community came together to raise funds to help the victims of this tragedy. Holly saw a call for photographers to donate their best photos for a local auction and remembers thinking, “I’m not a photographer, but if my photos can help raise funds, then I’d better try.” She didn’t expect to have one, let alone two photos accepted: one of a grizzly bear and another of a picturesque sunset. At that moment, she saw her potential. With the help of YouTube tutorials and friends, she became a self-taught photographer. Since then, she travels regularly with her husband and three children, giving them the opportunity to see the world and for her to take in nature through her lense. When describing her night-time photos, such as the dancing lights of the Aurora Borealis, she states, "It's not something that happens every day. You know, sometimes I think that we take the beauty of this area for granted. Because we see it every day, we just live in it. For people to really see its beauty, it takes planning and preparation and there is such a reward to just be able to be out there and experience that." You can find Holly's photography on display at local art galleries.

FEATURED NW PHOTOGRAPHER

Shooting for the Stars & Capturing Sunsets Holly Davison, Photographer from Whidbey Island

H

olly Davison has a relatable reason for how she initially became interested in photography; she simply wanted to take better pictures of her kids. Years later, those who marvel at her beautiful work are sure glad she did!

Her favorite subject to capture is the night sky - particularly the Milky Way, and the Northern Lights. "There's a peace during the night that you don't get during the day. I enjoy being enveloped in the darkness." Holly also delights in being able to share these spectacular events with people who can't experience them firsthand. Her piece (shown on front cover) Milky Way Rising Over Deception Pass Bridge definitely took some planning.

"We hiked in early and got the shot as we captured the sunset. You have to be willing to lose some significant sleep and wait, but it's worth it!" Bowman Bay Tree (shown here) was taken near Lighthouse Point during the blood moon eclipse. As Holly was waiting for the moon to rise over Deception Pass Bridge, she noticed a stunning sunset behind her - a 2-for-1 shot. Holly notes, "Always look behind you, even if you're waiting for something really good to happen in front of you!" You can see Holly Davison's magical work at The Whidbey Art Gallery in Langley.
