I wish to take this opportunity to welcome you to the March - April edition of the Syneron Candela Newsletter. In the past three months we have attended four conferences: SMART Ideas, IMCAS, Pro Beauty and ACE. We were delighted to once again sponsor the SMART Ideas Seminar and received great feedback on our lectures in the clinical agenda presented by Dr Sabika Karim and Dr Maria Gonzalez. You can read our full review of the event in our latest news section. We also attended Pro Beauty with Dr Sabika Karim running a well attended workshop on how to practically introduce Aesthetic Laser Hair Removal Devices into your clinic. We have also completed our first Gentle Laser, Elos, CO2RE and VBeam Master Classes using our two brand new state of the art training facilities Revere Clinic and Training Centre in North London and Academy 102 Harley Street. We are thrilled that attendance of these events has exceeded our expectations as we created these advanced training days especially to suit your training needs. I am pleased that our mix of top Doctors and Syneron Candela internal expert staff such as Graham Bisset ( Clinical Training Consultant), Hamish McNair (Clinical Manager EMEA) and Adrian Myrick (Syneron Product Manager EMEA) have been so well received. Our two CO2RE events, led by Dr Tapan Patel were especially popular and we are pleased to say that our next CO2RE date at Academy 102 Harley Street on July 14th is filling up already. We were privileged to have renowned national and international figures at our Masterclasses with Dr Arial Haus running our Elos event at Revere Clinic on February 18th and Mapperley Park’s Jo Martin heading our VBeam day at Academy 102 Harley Street on February 24th. We have even more of the leading Laser Experts in the industry for our upcoming events and pleased to announce that our next Masterclass at Academy 102 Harley Street, focussing on Body Treatments, will be on May 12th.

A Global Joint Venture In Home Beauty Devices Syneron Medical And Unilever Ventures Create Iluminage Beauty, A Global Joint Venture In Home Beauty Devices Syneron Medical Ltd. (NASDAQ: ELOS), the global market leader in aesthetic medical devices, and Unilever Ventures, today announced a definitive agreement to form a joint venture in home beauty devices: ‘Iluminage Beauty’. The aim of the joint venture is to develop and bring to consumers innovative, high performance beauty solutions, empowering them with professional level devices for at-home use.

Body Contouring Devices Velashape III is the third generation of the Velashape family of products. The device is 60% smaller than the previous model and has been redesigned, allowing the operator to sit or stand during the treatment and use the new foot pedal to reduce operator strain. There has also been a significant increase in the radio frequency power output from 60 watts to 150 watts, which means the desired end point (measured tissue temperature of 4345°C) is achieved much faster. This reduces treatment time. Velashape III is also CE-marked for body contouring and has Food and Drug Administration (FDA) clearance for circumferential reduction of the abdomen and thighs. It is the only body contouring device on the market to combine four different

modalities- Pulsed Vacuum, bipolar radiofrequency, infrared light and mechanical massage- for a total body shaping and contouring solution. The infrared focuses on the dermis providing immediate collagen contraction, while stimulating fibroblast activity; the radiofrequency focuses deeper and concentrates on the hypodermis through controlled thermal stress; and the massage and vacuum offer lymphatic drainage and increased circulation by prompting neocollagenesis and imposing mechanical stress on dermal fibroblasts. This, combined with collagen contraction, enriches and strengthens loose connective tissue. All of these modalities combined work to produce significant and measurable improvements in cellulite, body shaping and skin laxity.
In terms of menu offerings, there is the option to offer anything from a Velashape Once treatment- one treatment to give a circumferential reduction- to a three or six treatment protocol. In the author’s experience, there is a flexibility to fit in with each clinic’s business model and also patient schedules. Following a single session protocol, patients can expect average circumference reduction of 2-3cm, which is the equivalent of one dress or trouser size. For more information click here
Latest Clinical Papers Released Comparison of a Fractional Bipolar Radiofrequency Device and a Fractional Erbium-Doped Glass 1,550-nm Device for the Treatment of Atrophic Acne Scars: A Randomized Split-Face Clinical Study by Nopnarueporn Rongsaard, MD, And Paisal Rummaneethorn, MD
BACKGROUND A fractional erbium-doped glass 1,550-nm and a fractional bipolar radiofrequency (RF)device are effective in the treatment of atrophic acne scars. OBJECTIVE To compare the clinical effectiveness and side effects of fractional bipolar RF with those offractional erbium-doped glass in atrophic acne scars treatment.
MATERIALS AND METHODS Twenty Thai subjects with atrophic acne scars received three split-face monthly treatments, one side with fractional bipolar RF and the other with fractional erbium-doped glass. Three independent physicians and patients evaluated improvement in acne scars 4 weeks after the last treatment. Side effects were also recorded after each treatment. RESULTS The study found significant improvement in acne scars after treatment with fractional bipolar RF and with a fractional erbium-doped glass device without a statistically significant difference between the two devices. The side effects of both devices were pain, transient facial
erythema, and scab formation. The pain score with fractional erbiumdoped glass was higher than that with fractional bipolar RF, but duration of scab shedding was shorter. One case had postinflammatory hyperpigmentation on only the side treated with fractional erbium-doped glass. CONCLUSION Fractional bipolar RF and fractional erbium-doped glass have similar effectiveness for the treatment of atrophic acne scars. The authors have indicated no significant interest with commercial supporters. To read the full paper please click here
SMART Ideas Seminar After successfully sponsoring previous SMART Ideas Seminar in 2012 and 2013, we once again joined with The Consulting Room to host the London event at the end of January. Over 100 delegates attended the event, from Doctors and Practitioners to Clinic Managers and Clinic Marketeers, which took place at the Radisson Blue Edwardian Bloomsbury. The unique Seminar aims to provide helpful and useful tips on marketing, social media, employee legislation and how to drive more traffic to your clinic as well as a clinical agenda and practical demonstrations. The parallel agenda format provided a great opportunity for networking and education and a chance for our clients to meet us for one on one question and answer sessions.
The clinical agenda focussed on skin treatments and Body contouring and featured speakers including Dr Maria Gonzalez, Dr Sabika Karim, Lorna Bowes RGN and Dr Martyn King. Dr Karim led a Body Contouring Masterclass with the spotlight on how, with the increasing demand for body treatments, it is essential to keep up to date with the latest technologies and how to market them effectively through your clinic, to introduce these treatments to existing clients and create a whole new customer base. Dr Maria Gonzalez, a leader an innovator in the teaching of dermatology, had two slots on the agenda. She spoke about her personal experience in carefully selecting the right lasers for her private dermatology practice and
what results can be achieved by combining lasers with other treatments to treat a range of conditions. We find these intimate events much more valuable for our clients and enjoy meeting face to face to answer questions and queries you may have, a luxury that is not always afforded to us at larger scale events. We are looking forward to the Northern SMART Ideas Seminar which will take place in Manchester on Saturday 24th May 2014 at Radisson Blu, Manchester Airport. We will be once again inviting top Doctors and Dermatologists to speak at the event and would like to invite each of you to join us. Alexandrite Laser for Seborrheic Keratoses Clinical Evaluation on the Therapeutic efficacy of long-pulsed 755-nm alexandrite laser for seborrheic keratoses. By Kim YK, Kim DY, Lee SJ, Chung WS, Cho SB - Yonsei Star Skin & Laser Clinic, Yonsei University College of Medicine, Seoul, Korea.
Background Both ablative and non-ablative laser devices have been used for the cosmetic treatment of seborrheic keratoses.
Objective The analysis treatment outcomes and adverse events in the treatment of seborrheic keratoses using a longpulsed 755-nm alexandrite laser without colour enhancement.
Methods A total of 216 seborrheic keratoses in 13 patients were treated with one or three sessions of long-pulsed 755-nm alexandrite laser at 1-month intervals. The lesions were treated with settings of 35 J/cm2 using a 6-mm spot size, a 3-ms pulse width, and 1-2 passes or until the appearance of fine bubbles on the irradiated lesions.
keratoses. The colour of seborrheic keratoses did not significantly affect the objective improvement score or required treatment sessions. Most of the lesions became crusted within a few days after the laser treatment and spontaneously peeled off within 7 days.
Conclusion The delivery of long-pulsed, high fluence laser energy to seborrheic keratoses with protection of the epidermis by an integrated dynamic cooling device is an effective treatment with low risk of side-effects, even in light-coloured lesions with few target pigments.

Results A total of 216 seborrheic keratoses were treated with a mean 1.1 ± 0.4 sessions of long-pulsed 755-nm alexandrite laser and achieved a mean objective improvement score of 3.4 ± 0.7. Morphologic factors significantly impacted the number of treatment sessions required; in particular, papular lesions seemed to require more repetitive long-pulsed 755-nm alexandrite laser treatments than macular lesions. However, objective improvement score was not affected by the type of the seborrheic
