El origen de todo

José Pons Pedro, el fundador de POINT, incorporó este modelo de sillón en las primeras colecciones (años 20). Él le aportó su toque personal de diseño y de calidad. Apostó por darle mucha rigidez en las revueltas de los brazos, de manera que no se rompieran con el paso del tiempo. También incorporó los calados del respaldo, que lo hacían menos pesado a la vista.

La dificultad de esta pieza está en que se teje toda al aire. No tiene estructura desde el asiento hacia arriba. El soporte de los brazos y de la parte superior del respaldo es el tejido que sube desde el asiento. La rigidez de las revueltas de los brazos termina por darle solidez. No la pueden elaborar todos los artesanos. Requiere manos muy expertas.

Se ha hecho en muchos materiales: mimbre, médula de ratán (en esta fibra durante más de 70 años) y posteriormente en Shintotex –una fibra reciclable de alta resistencia desarrollada por POINT– con estructura de aluminio. Esta última es la versión que continúa hoy en día en producción. La última adaptación la dirigió el diseñador Alfonso Gallego. Tenía el reto de actualizar el modelo y convertirlo en un elemento que fuera más allá del tiempo, las modas y las tendencias. Gallego define el sillón Alga como «una pieza de estilo romántico mediterráneo con identidad propia».

The origin of it all

José Pons Pedro, the founder of POINT, included this model of armchair in the first collections (in the 1920s). He gave it his personal touch of design and quality. He chose to make the armrests very rigid so that they would not break with the passage of time. He also included the openwork of the backrest, which made it less heavy on the eye.

The difficulty with this piece is that it is woven entirely in the air. It has no structure from the seat upwards. The arms and back are a continuation of the seat. The rigidity of the armrests gives it its ultimate touch of solidity. It cannot be made by just any craftsman; it requires highly expert hands.

It has been made with many materials: wicker, rattan core (with this fibre for more than 70 years) and later with Shintotex, a highly resistant recyclable fibre developed by POINT, with an aluminium structure, which is the version still in production today. The latest adaptation was led by designer Alfonso Gallego. He had the challenge of updating the model and turning it into an element that would go beyond time, fashions and trends. Gallego defines the Alga armchair as “a piece in the romantic Mediterranean style with its own identity”. This collection also has two round dining tables.
