WISHING BLAIR THE BEST So apparently nobody from GoCom consulted with Chicoans when they were making changes to the lineup at KHSL/ KNVN. If they had, they would have realized sacking Rob Blair was going to get them one hugely pissed off community. Synthesis brings you the update you've been waiting for, finding out what's next for Chico's favorite weatherman.

BOTTLE ROCKED Synthesis writer/photographer Jack Knight, along with editor Nolan Ford, made their way to the inaugural Bottle Rock Music Festival in Napa Valley and returned dirty and sunburnt, but with lots of stories and photos to share. The festival featured big names such as The Black Keys, The Flaming Lips, Primus, and Kings of Leon who all delivered stellar performances. The festival was a huge success and has already lined up dates for next year. Read on to see what you may have missed at this year's event.

Chico might not be a giant melting pot of diversity, but we're definitely full of characters and opinionated pontificators. I include myself in that latter category. I said the other day to Matt, 'Tm not a hag or anything, I'm just vocal:' And he said, "That sounds like something people say about their cats. You know, when their cats are meowing really loud and annoying everybody, they say their cats are really vocal:' Aside from causing something to be wrong with my eyebrows, it made me think. I'm definitely a typical example of a liberal loud-meower. It seems like we're all kind of falling into the categorical rhetoric trap, constantly talking in circles around each other, over each other, agendizing every issue, and hyperbolizing. We're losing the middle ground. You feel one way, I feel another, why are you so intolerant, why am I tolerating things? It makes for a pretty frustrating experience, and fills me with fear for the future of Chico. But while we big mouths shout over each other, I know that there are groups of people in pockets of town working diligently to effect change and make Chico a great place to live. Those are the people that dissolve the fear, that give me hope, that take the focus off bullshit like the Farmer's Market stalemate, the complicated clusterfuck surrounding homelessness, the fire department robbing us blind, and possible city bankruptcy. Innovation and teamwork will save the day, and in the coming months, I think were going to see our very own bat beacons shining a light on the future of entrepreneurship, technology, and makerspaces in Chico. Do you have plans for an amazing invention but never had the opportunity to make a prototype? Now you do. Do you have an amazing concept for a start-up but you just need truly affordable office space? That's about to happen too. It's an exciting time to live in Chico! In this episode of the Synthesis, we kick some serious ass with an exclusive interview with Rob Blair. He gives us the lowdown about what's next and how he's been handling his newfound downtime. Also, Nolan journeyed to Bottle Rock to check out this most highly anticipated music festival. Did it live up to the hype? Did the Synthesizers end their season on a high note? And make sure you do the wordsearch this week because it's chock-full of all the coolkid bands from Bottle Rock. Also, a shout-out, a head's up, a challenge, if you will; the annual Blue Room Bocce Ball Tournament is coming up! The deadline for getting your team registered is Friday, May 24th. Check out chicobocce.com for more information and start thinking of awesome balls-related team names now. I've got Dain working on our Synthesis team name, so you know I'm taking it seriously.

Excavation "Take time to deliberate, but when the time for action has arrived, stop thinking and go in." -Napoleon Bonaparte

I'm happy to report that construction has begun on the "Death or Glory" pub. I spent a good chunk of the weekend using Easy E, my tractor equipped with a front loader, to dig away at a portion of one of the naturalized railroad berms that run through the farm. Good progress was made, particularly considering I have almost no idea what I am doing. I generated a nice big pile of dirt and rocks. I nearly got the tractor stuck a few times, as the water I was soaking the earth with ran down into and expanded the tire ruts. That's always fun. I figure it will take the better part of a month to get the whole thing excavated like I want it; the next step is pouring the concrete pad. I haven't decided yet if I'm going to construct the structure with cinder blocks or with treated beams. The finished pub will be a "dug-out," meaning it will rest in the earth, and will have more earth piled atop it. The idea is that it may stay cool even in the scorching heat of summer, and provide an even temperature for storing various foodstuffs and libations. Plum Wine Speaking oflibations, we've got a bumper crop of wild plums this year-at least ten times what I've seen before. I'm considering taking a stab at making a batch of plum wine. Heck,

if prisoners can make "pruno;' I figure I've got at least an outside shot at making something drinkable. From the looks of it, the plums are going to ripen sometime in the next couple of weeks. Then I will be creating mash and beginning the fermentation process. I'll keep you posted and let you know how everything is progressing. Beet Farming I harvested beets this weekend-prematurely. But the bed was a mess. I planted everything too close together, and I didn't weed it well. As of yesterday, it was growing more of the goddamn wild plantain than it was beets. My friend up here tells me the plantain, mashed into a balm, is a soothing remedy for bee stings. I should be in good shape if those swarms of killer bees ever materialize. In the meantime, they are a major pain in my posterior, so I yanked them all. I pickled the greens and the beets themselves, but even after a second processing the pickling jars didn't seal, so they're in my fridge. I will be eating a whole lot of beet greens over the next few weeks. I'm fried. I haven't grown accustomed to the sunshine and the heat yet, and the hours on the tractor took a lot out of me, mentally and physically. Today I feel like I'm walking in sand. My head feels dumbed down and heavy, though that could be from the heat, or the wine, or some combination thereof.

YOU GUYS, ROB BLAIR I had been single for eight years. I asked God, "When am I gonna find the right person in my life?" And after Vegas happened, I went to Costa Rica and did a mission trip. I had to get out of my head and help other people because I couldn't help myself at that point. I just couldn't believe that people would think that about me.

It's a great responsibility delivering the often-oppressive weight of what seems to be continuously rotten news to the community that you live in and have a great deal of respect for. Rob Blair felt the weight of that responsibility and did his best to bring some levity to your daily dose of world wrongs. He's left a footprint full of accuracy, authenticity, and cheer on the early-morning news spot, and a footprint full of affection for his genuine je ne sais quoi on our hearts. We are grateful that he sat down with us to let us know what his upcoming plans are, and to tell us how he's doing after KHSL/KNVN's new parent company, GoCom, went rogue and let him go from Wake Up!

So I went and worked with the Salvation Army in Costa Rica, and worked with different homeless organizations, and worked with an HIVI AIDS organization, and then I moved to Los Angeles, back where I went to school. I went to Chapman University in Orange County. So, I went to L.A. and it was there that I met someone-and we've been married (we are legally married still, we were part of that little window) since 2008. So I believe everything happens for a reason. If Vegas didn't happen, then I would not have met Michael. And if I had not met someone so supportive of my career, then I wouldn't be in Chico. I think yeah, we're scared right now, but we have faith and we have each other.

When we sat down for our last morning cup of coffee-closure, Blair spoke candidly about everything from his future plans, finding love, and how an inadvertant on-air stumble led him on a journey paved with silver linings from Vegas to Chico.

Now, Michael is a history teacher and two weeks ago he got his pink slip, so we've both just put our heads together and said, "Ok we're getting the signs:' And it looks like we will be moving.

So... how ya doing? Well it was shocking at first, but I'm a person of faith and I guess this was a sign. Have you been following the social media response to the news? I try to stay away from them, [but] my husband will say, "Oh my gosh! Listen to this!" Like 98% of the comments have been incredible, and after such a tumultuous happening in Vegas, to have a community that has embraced me so much... Vegas. I will talk about Vegas ... here's what I'm going to say to you, to set the record straight one last time, the last time I will ever talk about it until I write a book: I'm a Christian. My mom was a minister at an interracial church; I grew up

loving people for who they were. I'm also a gay man who knows what it's like to be rejected by some family-not just a community, but by some family. It was a stumble. It was NOT a slip of the tongue, because that means it was in your head already. I didn't even know what that word was. But-I do believe things happen for a reason.

Oh noes! Where are you moving to? Long Beach. We met in Long Beach and it's a beautiful area. Michael's already looking at schools and I'm having a blast looking at the possibilities in what lies ahead. I'm not looking at this with fear ... or at least I try [not to]. I'm trying to look at this with curiosity and hope. I'm even looking at the possibility of mortuary sciences, which I know might creep some people out but it's something that helps and offers hope to people. I'm also looking at counseling, grief

counseling ... you know I'm a crier. I cry at every sad movie, that little Westie in the puppy commercial, I cry at everything. And you know what? I haven't cried once yet. I think I'm going to cry when I'm sad ... and I'm not sad. Have you been wearing your pajamas for an extra long time in the morning? Yes! I've been sleeping! That's what I've been doing! A lot of people are going to miss having their first cup of coffee with you in the morning. If not you, then who should they have their coffee with? I think we're all special, and they should have coffee with someone who is genuine, [someone] who is real. I think that's what I was known for. I'm not perfect; I make fun of myself all the time, and hopefully people could relate to me. And hopefully they could see that I wasn't trying to be a TV character, I was just trying to be me and be authentic. I really didn't know the footprint that I'd left on that 5:30AM slot until I was let go. Sometimes when you were doing the weather did you feel like, "It's gonna be hot for three months, just roll the same tape from yesterday"? It was a challenge! That's where some personality comes into play. You have to have a strategy: "What can I do that's different? What can I do that's informative and not just goofy?" I wanted to be fun and informative and accurate. Accuracy was important to me. Summers are a challenge. It's allllll sun and it's alllll lOOs. People, it's

just gonna be hot. Wear extra strength antiperspirant and SPF 30. But getting in front of the green screen and just dancing around was not my goal. My goal was to be myself, have some fun, make people laugh, and give people a break from [bad] news.

Except when you were a banana, you were in the zone there. [Laughing.] But there are other sides to me, I'm not just a goofball. I have my bad days, and I've had a tough life-everybody's had a tough life. But when I had a job to do, I did it to the best of my ability and again, I really didn't know how much I was appreciated. I'm so grateful. So what will you miss, and what's next? I really enjoy community service. I really have loved the time that I've been here, the times that I've been able to get out into the community and do things with Big Brothers and Big Sisters, the Humane Society... that's the fun stuff. Because, you know, we live here too, we're part of this community. I'm leaning toward the nonprofit sector, public speaking. I don't know what that means yet, but I've gotten some calls already.

After exploring the slightly smaller Citi Stage and the well-shaded Miner Family Winery Stage, we returned to the WillPower Stage to prepare for the imminent doublefeature of The Avett Brothers and Primus, who would be performing simultaneously on neighboring stages.

WillPower Stage

The inaugural Bottle Rock Festival at the Napa Valley Expo was a huge success, bringing in just about 40,000 people to enjoy performances by some of today's biggest names in live music and comedy. Synthesis writer/photographer Jack Knight and I arrived at about SPM on Thursday to claim our media passes. Off in the distance we could hear The Black Crowes, dropping hits off their multi-platinum 1990 debut, Shake Your Money Maker. Upon entrance we were greeted by the main stage, AKA the WillPower Stage, an impressive sight that looked about the size of Whitney Hall. The gigantic video screens, located on both sides of the stage and dispersed throughout the food court, were perfectly synced with the live audio, making it so there wasn't a single bad seat in the house.

Alabama Shakes

This was probably my eighth time seeing the Avett Brothers live, and they were just as full oflife as always. They opened with the mellower single, "Live and Die" off their latest album, The Carpenter, but then launched into more rowdy, foot-stomping classics such as "Paranoia in B Flat Minor:' Despite the "throw-and-go' nature of music festival sound checks, the mix was clean, successfully highlighting the driving, percussive element of Scott Avett's banjo strumming. After encountering some old Chico friends, I convinced one of them to accompany me to check out Primus. Unfortunately, no Tim Alexander on drums this time, but his replacement held it down just the same. Ler Lalonde left something to be desired with a somewhat uninspired guitar performance, but Les Claypool saved the day with his inimitable, comically engaging stage presence, and soon had the crowd eating out of his hand. The good Colonel gave praise to the festival organizers and expressed gratitude to them for taking the chance to host such an ambitious event, despite resistance from the powers-that-be. Additionally, he paid tribute to his grandfather who passed away that same morning at SAM. With his grandfather's image projected on the screen behind him, Claypool sang one of Grandpop's favorite tunes while the rest of the band took a break. We headed back to catch the end of the Avett Brothers and then eventually ended up back at our camp after some downtown shenanigans involving a VIP bus we

weren't supposed to be on. Friday we awoke to the sun blazing down on our camp. Jack's survival skills came through as he strung up a tarp to provide some shade for us to relax beneath while we enjoyed our breakfast and a game of Munchkin (see Synthesis volume 19, issue 14). We returned to the WillPower Stage just in time for Alabama Shakes. As frontwoman Brittany Howard passionately belted out her emotive lyrics, I couldn't help but think how much it reminded me of Lisa Valentine's recent performance at Duffy's Tavern. About The Flaming Lips halfway through the set, we made our way for the Citi Stage so as not to miss a single moment of The Flaming Lips. Until a couple weeks ago when I saw Dr. Dog perform in Portland, The Flaming Lips were hands-down the best live act I'd ever witnessed, and they lived up to my expectations this year at Bottle Rock. Although they didn't do the classic "ball thing;' where lead singer Wayne Coyne walks around on top of the crowd in a giant plastic bubble, they still

The Black Keys

were stumbling through the Bottle Rock Sahara in desperate search of some shade.

delighted the audience with comparable stage theatrics. Coyne stood upon a giant, futuristic-looking podium that was connected to long, white tubes running down the back of the stage. As he sang, Coyne cradled a fake infant that was apparently connected to the tubes, creating a scene straight out of The Matrix. Between the potentially seizure-inducing light show and the psychedelic imagery projected onto the screen behind the band, the Lips were easily the most memorable act of the weekend. When Friday night headliners The Black Keys took the stage, they were greeted by a sea of fans. At this point, the "VIP" area that Jack and I had previously enjoyed was overflowing with people who'd paid a premium price for what was supposed to be an enhanced, more comfortable Bottle Rock experience. Jack wormed his way to the photo pit just as the band began cycling through songs from their last three albums, including Jack's personal favorite, ''I've Got Mine:'

Jackson Browne

Early Saturday morning we rallied to make it in time for Best Coast. Although I had previously expressed doubts about the band being able to stay hot following their debut, Crazy For You, I was promptly force-fed my own words as lead singer Bethany Cosentino explored a medley of new tracks off The Only Place (produced by Jon Brion ... bonus), all of which I found just as satisfying as the more-familiar material. A particularly poignant lyric Cosentino dug into that had the crowd chanting was, "I don't want to be how they want me to be:' In some ways, Best Coast was my personal favorite of the weekend. Their stripped-down, garage-rock vibe was refreshing, and stood out from all the other acts we'd seen. About 40 minutes into their set, however, we realized how badly the sun was kicking our asses. I started to have flashbacks of Coachella and the next thing I knew, Jack and I

After fully recuperating with some lunch, we made our way to the Miner Family Winery Stage to catch Jackson Browne. His show at Laxson Best Coast Auditorium in 2011 was by far the best solo performance I'd ever seen, and I was excited to see him for the first time performing with a full band. I made a joke to Jack, predicting that we'd arrive just in time for "Take It Easy;' complete with The Eagles' version of the backup harmonies. As my prophecy came true, Jack made that face that only Jack can make, confirming that something awesome just happened. Browne then encored with a stellar version of"The Pretender;' the single that I coincidentally purchased on vinyl for a dollar at Amoeba Records a few weeks ago. Jackson Browne+ music festival heat exhaustion = extrasensory perception/ cosmic coincidences. Next up was Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros. The band was celebrated by its fans more enthusiastically than any other act I'd seen, giving new meaning to the term "cult following'.' I was reminded of the band YACHT, whose music and mission have been described as a belief system. A highlight from the set was when lead singer Alex Ebert passed around his microphone throughout the audience. Without hesitation, some surprisingly self-assured audience members shared their stories of how they'd come to love the band.

Whenever they took breaks from their instruments, they'd fall into a fairly complex set of synchronized steps that would dazzle even the likes of Synthesis receptionist/senior choreographer, Bethany Johnson.

Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros

Kings of Leon were closing out the night on the WillPower Stage, but the crowd had reached overwhelmingly claustrophobic levels, eliminating any chance of a good photo of the band. In anticipation of the imminent traffic disaster Napa was about to experience, we made a hasty escape via northern backcountry roads, avoiding I-80 and an evening of bumper-to-bumper torment. Given that it was the first year Napa had ever hosted an event of such epic proportions, everything went better than expected. The dates have already Iron and Wine been set for next year (May 9-11) and in all likelihood, whatever kinks were experienced at this year's festival will be smoothed out come 2014. I hope to see you out there.

Our festival weekend was coming to a close; we were dirty, and critically fatigued. Fortunately, Iron and Wine was up next, so we'd be able to relax to Samuel Beam's breathy vocals and soothing melodies ... at least, that's what we thought. Instead, a full band complete with horn section took the stage and launched into rocking jams that were anything but mellow. A highlight for me was observing the horn players' unintentionally hilarious dance moves. Chuckleheads

AQ (As Quoted) Life mimics nature's seasons. Maybe not in the same rhythm, but still. Your personal winter may last eight calendar years, maybe more. You might idle for a decade in the joys of summer-life's most intense harvest season-when all the hopes and dreams and things you planted in spring have come to fruition. My favorite season, the one I hope to end my life with, is autumn. How great would it be to sail out on the cool breeze of fall, bedecked in the warm glow of a life well lived? But who am I to say when I'll sail out? My life is currently popping with spring color. For the first time, the warmth of the sun is shining on my neck, my favorite flowers have lured me to lean in and breathe deeply, and I am certain that the frost is behind me (it has been a long winter). I have SO stopped to smell the roses. I'm smelling the shit out of those roses, and smiling. A lot. Spring things are best enjoyed in spring. So, when I began restaurant hunting for a place to enjoy while staying in San Francisco, I wanted something appropriately seasonal. It is definitely spring at AQ Restaurant. We started with "Artichokes in the Garden'' and Spring Lamb Tartare. The artichokes were marinated via vacuum pressure (think sousvide without the hot water), were served with crispy strips of shaved artichoke that turned sweet when fried, and little marinated green peppercorns that I (drunkenly) mistook for tiny capers until I bit into them and found peppery tartness instead of that slightly sweet,

I

10

mustardy, earthy bite particular to capers. I had to convince my dining companion that the lamb tartare was a good idea. And it was. It SO was! The lamb was tender and absolutely un-gamey, topped with smoked feta and a watercress gelee. The tartare was accompanied by what, at first glance, I thought was a little avocado palate cleanser (again, I was drunk), but turned out to be a finely pureed guacamole that was beautifully complimentary to the tartare. For entrees, we ordered halibut with sorrel and creme fraiche, and soft shell crab with coastal seaweed and ramp. And because I'm a member of the gluten-free party, I forewent the cacio e pepe (a cheese and pepper pasta) . Instead, I had a little cheese and pepper fondue at the base of my rice-flour-fried soft shell bowl of deliciousness. Spring at AQ snuck up on me the same way my life's spring season has: surprises at every turn. I spent my meal going, "Okay, I see cucumber on this plate. What the hell? What did they do that made this cucumber taste like that?" Honestly, some of the plate presentation was not my favorite, but sometimes life is like that- it may not look exactly the way we think it should. But the components, when they come together in that perfect way, are so, so good.

SIERRA NEVADA BIG ROOM This week the Big Room brings back the North Bay's fantastic string band, The Brothers Comatose. Their last show at Cafe Coda alongside The Railflowers made for one of the most jam-packed crowds ever. It'll be nice this time to have some room on the dance floor to bob and sway to their upbeat country-inspired jams. The band will continue to explore the beautiful Pacific Northwest and then tour throughout the summer hitting just about every major festival keen to their style of music. Catch them while you can. 7:30PM. $15. All ages.

LA SALLE'S After last week's Tyler, The Creator performance at the Senator, it would seem Wednesday nights are picking up for rap and hip hop. It's been awhile since La Salle's has hosted these genres on a Wednesday, but when it rains it pours. Five local/regional rappers will share the stage this week, including B. Lee's (of the Hooliganz) first-ever solo performance. DJ Babyface will be spinning all night for headliner Lee as well as all four of the opening acts. The show begins at 8PM and costs $5, but leave the under-21 kiddies at home.

SEXYTIME Balls McPhearson balls@synthesis.net

Sexytime: Straight Talk with Balls McPhearson Dear Sexytime, I recently met a great guy at a party and we have been dating now for a couple of weeks. After our second date, we went back to his apartment, one thing led to another, and we had sex. After we had both fallen asleep, I woke up when I heard him in the bathroom. When he returned to bed, I reached over to touch his butt, and was surprised that I felt a plastic-type material. I just assumed he was wearing those cheap nylon athletic shorts, and didn't think much more about it. Well, last night he slept over at my apartment, and the same thing happened: had sex, fell asleep, woke up when I heard him in the bathroom, and felt plastic shorts when he returned. The room has always been too dark for me to see what's going on, and he has never said anything about it, but now I suspect he's a bed-wetter and is putting on adult diapers before falling asleep! He's been up and dressed before me both times we've spent the night together, so I'm assuming he doesn't want me to know/ta lk about it. What should I do?

Dear Butt-Toucher, Seeing as things are so new with this guy, I'd suggest you sort of let it go for the time being. It's not causing you any harm and really, it could be saving your bed from becoming a piddle pad. Of course, if things progress and your "dates" become more frequent, you will want some answers.

"If he does wear safety

pants in bed, he is likely

Ever hear of conversation? Sure, it's uncomfortable at times, but it's the only logical solution here. Ifhe does wear safety pants in bed, he is likely to be quite selfconscious about it. The best approach will be not to make him overly embarrassed or defensive. Wait for a private moment and pose your question clearly. "I've noticed blah blah and wanted to ask you about this, can you tell me about blah?" If he becomes defensive and weird, drop it. He will likely bring it back up later once he's had time to formulate a response. Above all, don't be a probing jerk about it.

to be quite self-conscious about it."

Sincerely, Depending on You for a Straight Answer

If your curiosity causes the whole situation to implode-if he can't talk openly to a partner about less-savory subjects without losing his shit (or pee)-I'd say nothing of value was lost. -Balls

A Tower, Burning Last Thursday was the opening reception of Crystal Keesey's MFA Culminating Exhibition at the 1078 Gallery. About 60 people showed up to see Keesey's installation, eat the amazing coconut cream cupcakes, and then listen to the artist give a talk.

meant to turn a profit, or to be of use in any practical way. It took two years, the help of numerous friends and specialists, a healthy chunk of money, and who knows how much else? Beyond Keesey getting her MFA through Chico State, what was it all for?

The installation itself was eight feet wide and 20 feet tall. Curtains of a deep, velvety blue hung from the gallery's ceiling, framing The Tower-Keesey's three-dimensional interpretation of the tarot card, originally conceived by Pamela Coleman Smith in 1909. The multifaceted creation was made up entirely of pieces of stained glass, which hung by ribbons tied to rafters 20 feet above.

I can discuss the personal experience I was able to have as a result of it, but beyond that, I could only answer this question of purpose with speculative prose. Even Keesey wasn't especially clear on the message or purpose of it. From her words, it seemed that she simply had a need to create in three dimensions, and the Muse of Creativity gave her The Tower as her cosmic assignment.

As I listened to Keesey outline the Tower's inception and construction, I was struck by the sheer scope of the project. So much went into the piece I saw in front of me-so many people, so much labor, so much time-it became clear that Keesey was not the sole creator, but rather the director and manager of an entire crew. Its assembly required days of the artist working in the rafters of the gallery, arranging and rearranging lengths of fabric and pieces of glass until the perfect spatial relationships were achieved down at eye-level. Adjusting the natural lighting of the room required a trip onto the building's roof, to black out the skylight. The glassblowing process she implemented required five experienced blowers working in tandem for hours.

My favorite part of the installation was the physical tower itself. The glass was natural, all of a piece, colored a whitish hue that was streaked through with a sky-blue. A vision came to mind of the artist summoning it from the Earth itself, and the Earth responding with the perfect piece of towershaped crystal, complete with windows.

THE TOWER.

You can see the installation at 1078 Gallery, during their open hours, until June 1st. Artists and performers of Chico! If you have an original work that's approaching exhibition, this biweekly column is your resource for making your art and your intention known to the public. Email me.

CHECK IT OUT! If you see yourself

Remember that guy Jeff Foxworthy who made a career out of the humorous formulation about how to determine if you were, just maybe, a redneck? That little checklist included items like these: "You might be a redneck if. .. your mom has been in a fistfight at a high school sporting event," or, "You might be a redneck if. .. you think loading the dishwasher means getting your wife drunk."

As I read yet another fear-andhate-filled email from someone who believes Barack ... your bicycle has a gun rack. Obama is a dangerous socialist intent on confiscating every gun in the nation before putting all the "real" Americans in concentration camps, it occurred to me that people who get their opinions from Limbaugh and Beck might just be morons. And, as a public service, I decided to use JeffFoxworthy's old gag as a way of allowing readers to determine if they are, in fact, slipping over the line into moron territory. So, assess your moronic tendencies in the following scenarios:

Tyler, the Creator May 15th

----

I Senator

There was quite the congregation of white, suburb tweens last Wednesday night in Chico. No, there wasn't a blowout sale for argyle sweaters at Kohl's. Tyler, the Creator played The Senator Theatre, and all the kids bopped along to his graphically explicit lyrics as Tyler performed fan favorites with band mates Earl Sweatshirt, Jasper Dolphin, and Taco Bennet. As per rap show dictum, the show started 30 or 40 minutes late. When Taco finally took the stage, the crowd was treated to a lengthy set of radio hit songs and remixes. It seemed a strange way to start a show to me, but maybe I'm just not used to the norm for hip hop performances.

Tyler, Earl, and Jasper came out to a very hyped-up crowd. Despite the atrocity that is the Senator sound system, they began the

Theatre

show and got the crowd moving. Instead of being a traditional opening act, Earl Sweatshirt performed songs intermittently throughout the show. His flagship track "EARL' really went off and he even played some new songs from his upcoming album. Tyler talked about Chico's skate park, gave a shout out to Shubert's, and insulted various fans in the front row. Tyler and Jasper even sang happy birthday to one girl, and I quote: "Happy birthday, FUCK YOU:' Insulting behavior is not abnormal, as Tyler fans welcome and sadistically cherish this type of treatment. Tyler's set list spanned his discography, playing songs from his newest album, Wolf (2013), such as "Tamale'' and my personal favorite "Sandwitches;' off of Goblin (2011). Tyler and his crew were very vocal throughout the concert about the energy of the Chico crowd. They were constantly goading them into getting more and more rowdy. Before their final song, Tyler actually orchestrated a mosh pit, requesting the crowd to make space just so they could have room to run at each other. When it comes down to it, Tyler put on a good show that got people excited. All present members of OFWGKTA were very interactive with the crowd and delivered an entertaining night. If I had to sum up the show in one word ... GOLFWANG.

ID Hailing from the rainy Pacific Northwest, heavy psychedelic rock band Kinski has been an underground favorite since their inception in 1998. Comprised of Chris Martin (guitar), Matthew Reid-Schwartz (guitar, keyboard, flute), Lucy Atkinson (bass), and Barrett Wilke (drums), this four-piece is currently on tour to promote their newest record, Cosy Moments, released by their current label, Kill Rock Stars. Chris Martin spoke with Synthesis about their upcoming show at Cafe Coda on May 25th with Tropical Popsicle and West By Swan.

Ever? Well, that's been one of the really great things about doing this band; we've gotten to meet and travel with some really amazing bands. It's hard to pick just one. rn say Acid Mothers Temple, Mission of Burma, and Oneida were the best.

You're currently on tour to promote your new album, Cosy Moments. What was the process of recording like as compared to other albums? It's been five or six years between albums, so we knew the material really well. It was almost like our first record in a way. We<l been playing the songs for so long that when we got into the studio, it didn't take long at all. Is this your favorite album so far? It's a little different than our other work, so we were all feeling a little apprehensive about how people would react. I like it, but it has to be out for a year or so before I could say whether it's one of my favorites. We actually have about two thirds of another record finished, so we've been playing those songs on this tour. The new stuff is a combination of the poppy-sounding new songs with our older-sounding, spacey-type stuff, and we're really excited about the next project. Will you be playing the brand-new material in Chico? We just toured on the East Coast, and I think we were doing about four or five off the new one, and three or four old ones, then a few brand-brand-new ones. You've toured with quite a range of musicians, including Acid Mothers Temple and Tool. What's been your favorite band to tour with?

Do you think the market being completely saturated with music has hurt the industry or helped it? It's so easy for people to make CDs or put something up on Bandcamp. I think having labels is both good and bad. It's good to have a sort of gatekeeper in a sense; people that you can trust in, [based on] what they've released in the past. I do really love that bands are starting to put out vinyl again, because if you do that it means you must be pretty serious about it. You have to go through so many steps, and it's expensive. What bands are out there right now that you're excited about? I like a lot of bands that are from just a couple years ago, like Emeralds and Mark McGuire, but they broke up ... let me think about that for a minute.

You used to be signed with label Sub Pop, and now you're with Kill Rock Stars. How does the experience differ? Well, Kill Rock Stars is way smaller. Sub Pop probably has about 20 people working there, whereas KRS only has about four. Sub Pop hires out for press and stuff like that, whereas KRS does it in house; it's more of a DIY vibe. Sub Pop was really great to us, they were very hands-off as far as material, direction of the music and recording; they don't like to get in the way of the artist. They (Sub Pop & KRS) are totally different, but so far they've both been great to work with. Twenty years ago, if you were in a band that went on tour or put out a record, it meant that you were serious about music. Now, with technology where it is, and recording being so accessible to anyone and everyone, bands don't necessarily have to be that serious about music in order to record or even tour.

What music do you listen to in the van when you're touring? Well that's totally different. (Laughs). I'm on this big kick of Mississippi Records stuff, like Turkish music from the 30s. [Mississippi Records is a reissue label that makes old music available on vinyl, with each pressing limited to one thousand.] There are so many collections of 78s that are just incredible. Anything else you want to add? It's been so long since we've played in Chico, but we always have a great time there. I remember a show we played there once where the stage was basically on the bar, that was pretty awesome. Come let Kinski rock your socks off at Cafe Coda on Saturday, May 25th with Tropical Popsicle and West By Swan. SPM. $8. All ages.

This Season Is OVER! by Kenny "Squints" Kelly

Well, I was wrong. The Synthesizers did not beat Build.com Red. In fact, it wasn't really that close. 12-2. Our season ended with a 3-5 record, not quite good enough to make it to the playoffs. Our Cinderella story ended not with us riding away with Prince Charming, but it didn't end with us scrubbing toilets and licking boot either. We were somewhere

in the middle, like we hooked up with that marginally handsome baker who lives down the road and will now live out a life of lower-middle-class comfort. That is, until we come back for the summer league. We'll make some big trades, pick up some high-quality free agents, and revamp our image. It worked for the Miami Marlins, right?
