I
t’s a dynamic time for the commercial aviation aftermarket. Expanding global markets and technical enhancements to aircraft fleets look set to drive growth across the sector. At ap&m Europe 2018, recently held at Olympia, London on 30-31 May, the mood was optimistic. Across the board companies spoke of expansion, hiring and continued growth. Attendees hailed from across the world. In total, 69 countries were represented and the show encompassed the entire global MRO supply chain, all under one roof. Digitalisation was a key theme, with suppliers and distributors looking to streamline and improve their online platforms. Technology also added a bit of excitement as some companies chose to incorporate virtual reality into their stands and, for those looking for a quick break, there was always a spot of drone flying to be done!

Stuart Abbott
Is it a table..?
One of Abbott’s first designs
A flying table
n It all started when a friend suggested making a chair from a discarded airplane seat. Former RAF engineer Stuart Abbott, 36, was hooked and now six years later he has a thriving business creating stunning, functional furniture which could easily pass as works of art. Stuart has hand-crafted a boardroom table from the wing of a Jetstream, made wall clocks from Boeing 737 emergency exit doors and coffee tables from Boeing 767 windows. The aircraft engineer from Newcastle will give anything a go – a summer house from a dumped fuselage or perhaps a Wi-Fi speaker system from a black box recorder. ‘The idea and the object sort of come together,’ he explained while showing some of his projects at ap&m Europe. ‘The fun is making it work and creating something unique, beautiful and useful from what most people would consider junk.’ You can see more of Abbott’s work at his website where you can also request your own special commissions. • www.stu-artaviationfurniture.co.uk
A sense of optimism n At the conclusion of ap&m Europe in London, one of the key takeaways was the sense of optimism held by aftermarket providers. This is understandable when taking into account various industry growth predictions, with the likes of ICF International estimating global MRO spend will reach $96bn by 2025. Given this market opportunity is underpinned by rising demand for engine and component services in growth regions such as Asia-Pacific, it was interesting to gain insight into exactly how aftermarket specialists will approach these openings. Based on discussions with firms at the MRO Procurement Expo, this will be centred on the continued development of their service offerings. Some MROs are looking to grow by simply building on what they are already doing well. While not without challenges, MROs remain buoyant. One exhibitor described the aircraft maintenance sector as one where ‘anything can happen’ – providing a fitting description of how many firms see the current landscape.
Flying through hoops n There were a few experienced drone pilots at the show this year, if the results of Extreme Fliers’ competition are anything to go by. The company was kept busy showing off the world’s smallest drone (the Micro Drone 3.0), with the aim of bringing the fun of drone piloting to a larger audience. Providing show attendees with a spot of healthy competition, the Extreme Fliers team set up an obstacle course, complete with hoops for testing manoeuvres. Competitors piloted the drone for one minute and scored ten points for every obstacle overcome. Scores ranged drastically with the majority scoring around 20 points. The
The Micro Drone 3.0
top score of the show was 160 while, at the other end, a few unlucky novices scored zero. Top scorers received a free drone but, realising that some
competitors were more experienced than others, the team organised a separate category for newbies, making sure everyone was in with a chance. There was some curiosity as to whether the drones could be used by anyone. The team explained that because their fliers weigh in at under 250 grams they are exempt from new laws, due to come into force in 2019, that will require pilots to register with the Civil Aviation Authority. Nevertheless, drone pilots of all sizes should be aware that from 30 July 2018, it will be illegal to fly drones above 400 feet or within a kilometre of airport boundaries. • microdrone.co.uk

Building a dream
Mike Miller-Smith
n One booth in particular stood out from the rest this year. Aerobility, a charity that helps disabled people build and fly aircraft, was calling on the industry to help with its new project. This year at the Farnborough Air Show (21-22 July), Aerobility will take part in a six-day challenge to build a BushCat aircraft and fly it at the end of the show. The team is offering interested parties the chance to sponsor part of the aircraft and have their names on the plane, which will continue to be used after the show to introduce disabled people to flying. Based at Blackbushe Airport in Surrey, the team is also mid-way through a separate project in which it is constructing a Zenith Air CH750 STOL aircraft from scratch. Once complete the Zenith will be the first aircraft ever to be built and flown by an all-disabled team. Chief executive, Mike Miller-Smith, whose long-time passion for flying encouraged him to help other disabled people take to the sky, said: ‘It’s a privilege to be able to bring aircraft to all people, both able and disabled.’ Aerobility is a registered charity, established in 1993 and operates from a number of airports around the UK. • www.aerobility.com

We need to know what has happened What if an aircraft disappears from the flight radar and is nowhere to be found. On land, it is relatively easy to search and find the wreckage of an aircraft. But when an accident occurs above the ocean, it is without saying much more difficult to retrieve the wreckage of it and to get to know what has happened. To facilitate this in the future, a new Underwater Locator Device (ULD) has been recommended by ICAO for overwater operations as of January 1, 2018. EASA has adopted this requirement and demands compliance from January 1, 2019. Other countries have similar regulations. The ULD uses low frequency (8.8kHz), long wavelength technology to increase the range at which submerged aircraft
wreckage can be located, and will be mounted on the aircraft fuselage structure. Fokker Services can help you to commence your ULD modification in order to comply with the mandate, as stated. We would be happy to answer your questions and address your needs with respect to our ULD solutions for your fleet.

SATAIR
Diamonds in the sky for Satair 60th anniversary for Danish service integrator sees growth in digital sectors
T
here was a celebratory mood at Satair’s show booth as this year marks the company’s 60th anniversary. Registered on 23 December 1957 in Copenhagen, the company started life with the purchase of a consignment of Pratt & Whitney R-985 engine parts. Since then, Satair has specialised in distributing OEM parts and providing a range of multi-fleet services to its global client base. The company has gone through many changes over the last 60 years, not least
its acquisition by Airbus in 2011. Now it is embarking on a corporate rebrand as the old ‘Satair Group’ becomes simply ‘Satair’. Martin Couet, head of sales for Europe said that this year, the company is working hard on integration and digitisation. Satair has announced that by the end of 2018, it will have integrated its existing market channels – Satair Distribution and Airbus Material and Supply Chain Services – under the new Satair brand. When it comes to digitisation, Couet said the company has hired a number
of people with expertise in the digital fields and is set to use their knowledge to launch a simplified and faster e-portal. The portal will act as a onestop shop for customers. He also hinted that there will be some ‘exciting new developments in the digital field’ due to go live next year. The Danish company also showed off its current digital prowess at ap&m Europe with a virtual reality station in which visitors could experience a tour around the cockpit of an aircraft, as well as participate in take-offs, flight operations and landings.
SATAIR
AN AIRBUS SERVICES COMPANY
UK expansion plans THE LONDON-BASED ap&m Europe expo was particularly appropriate for Satair this year as the company recently announced the opening of a new facility close to Heathrow Airport. Designed and built in close collaboration with Satair, the new facility at Space Waye, North Feltham Trading Estate, became fully operational on 19 March. The facility, which will act as a distribution hub for spare aircraft batteries and a battery servicing operation, is six times larger and has 11 times the cubic capacity of the company’s previous site in Middlesex. All of the staff made significant contributions to the design, layout and functionality of the new facility and all have moved to Space Waye. An additional five new employees have been recruited for warehousing and repair operations and the business has started a battery technician apprenticeship scheme through the Way2Work initiative. The new site provides opportunities for the company to expand its battery distribution business which currently has around 180 customers ranging from international and regional airlines to MRO companies, helicopter owners, business jets and private aircraft owners. Currently Satair services 7,500 aircraft batteries a year. In a statement, Jon Ravenhall, managing director of Satair UK and head of operations repair Europe (UK) said: ‘Being a key part of the Operations Repair Group within Satair, we plan to offer electrically-based product repairs, particularly for Airbus proprietary parts.'
Satair is a truly global company and world leader in the commercial aerospace aftermarket. The company supports the complete life cycle of the aircraft with a full and integrated portfolio of flexible, value adding material management products, services and tailored support modules. This allows customers to concentrate on their core business; the safe and cost effective operation of their aircraft. Satair provides genuine OEM parts distribution and offers an exhaustive and innovative multi-fleet service portfolio to OEMs and customers. In addition, the company provides genuine Airbus Material Support and is the sole Airbus authorised distributor for a wide range of Proprietary Products and Services accessible through the trading partner Airbus SAS. Satair is a stand-alone company and Airbus subsidiary with more than 1,300 employees and ten locations worldwide.

S
upplier and distributor of aircraft parts, Leki Aviation, had a prime spot at ap&m Europe this year. Situated close to the entrance, the company got plenty of traffic and had the chance to meet existing and new customers. Marc Vestergaard, area sales manager for Russia, had an optimistic take on the industry at large. He noted that suppliers and customers across the board appear to be hiring and expanding and that Leki is following this trend, increasing its presence across all territories from Asia to the US, Russia and Europe. Founded in Copenhagen, Leki has sales offices and warehouses worldwide and serves 1,000 airlines and MROs globally.
Dispatching an order from Dubai
The rise of the robots Leki Aviation plans to embrace robotic technology in the quest to make the company leaner and more efficient. Sales manager for Russia, Marc Vestergaard explained that Leki is looking to companies such as Amazon, that utilise robots in their warehouses, and is working on doing the same. Robots are already being put to use in warehouses across a range of industries and can assist with loading, unloading, sorting, transportation, storage, delivery and audits. In January 2017, Amazon was reported as having 45,000 robots working across its 20 fulfillment centres. At the moment, the robot project is still in development and Leki’s warehouses are currently robot-free. Nevertheless, the company is aware that utilising robots could streamline the business and help get parts out to customers quicker. ‘It’s a new era,’ said Vestergaard.

Opportunities for independents Time to build up long-term contractual support business

Success in the rankings
Arerfin’s plant in Caerphilly
R
elative newcomer AerFin, the end-of-life solutions specialist that launched operations in 2010, was looking to stand out at this year’s ap&m Europe. James Bennett, director of sales and marketing, explained that the company’s main goal is to continue building the brand. It was certainly catching eyes at the show with a large video display. Looking to the future, Bennett said that AerFin will be building up its long-term contractual support business, which currently only accounts for 10 to 20 per cent of AerFin’s revenue. He pinpointed engine leasing as a growth area, explaining that across the industry most maintenance repair organisation capacity is challenged. He also predicted opportunities on the component side and noted an apparent shift away from OEM support towards independent companies.
Caerphilly-based AerFin is doing its bit for Wales. On 9 April The Financial Times’ FT1000 announced AerFin as the fastest-growing aerospace & defence company in Europe, as well as the 23rd fastest-growing company in Europe overall. The FT1000 ranks European companies that have achieved the highest compound annual growth rate (CAGR) over the previous three fiscal years. AerFin came in top with a three year CAGR of 234 per cent. The announcement came shortly after AerFin took delivery of the fourth and fifth Embraer E170 E-Jets from Saudi Arabian Airlines (the company acquired the entire Saudi Airlines E170 fleet in December last year). AerFin looks to be positioning itself as a significant player in the E-jet aftermarket support business. It recently announced the launch of its ‘Beyond Pool’ component support agreement for BA CityFlyer’s fleet of E-Jet aircraft.

AAR
Increasing visibility A push to improve the aircraft-on-ground desk
U
S-based AAR Corporation had a busy show this year. The company, a leading provider of aviation services in more than 100 countries, offers a broad range of aftermarket solutions to commercial and government customers, including parts supply, integrated solutions and
manufacturing. Paul Richardson, vice-president of sales for EMEA, said that the company’s plans for the future include more work on the trading side of the business. The company confirmed the expansion of its hydraulic repair and overhaul facility in Amsterdam back in 2016 and wants to use this to find opportunities to bring in components for the repair side of the business.
Richardson also spoke about the company’s continued push to improve AAR’s AOG (aircraft on ground) desk. AAR is working hard on its IT solutions so that AOG customers have better visibility of part availability. This continued push complements the company’s loans-and-exchanges business that has been progressing over the last couple of years.
