INTRODUCTION Intelligent Investment: The UK’s drive for growth
T
“
As we continue to invest in the right schemes the lights will stay on, the water will keep flowing and our environment will remain safe and secure
here has never been a more exciting time to work in the environmental sector. With the economy now expanding to pre-recession levels and a renewed political confidence and commitment to drive through growth, the challenges facing our industry have never been greater – nor our ability and ingenuity to meet those challenges. With increasing global demands and competition it is important we recognise and respond to the factors driving change within our sector. The continued push for internationalisation means we are seeing a seismic shift towards larger organisations with increased global reach through mergers and acquisitions. How will this influence our professional lives and development? Will this unlock the further value and potential in our industry? Wherever these changes take us, it is vital that as contractors, consultants and clients we continue to work closely together to remain at the forefront of technological advances, build trust with communities and influence wise longterm investment. In the UK record-breaking winter rainfall, flooding and the understandably strong reactions these events triggered shows the importance of leadership within our industry and making our voice heard. Sixty years of investment in coastal infrastructure and maintenance has paid dividends. Looking forward it is important that we continue this and similar investments in critical infrastructure, build on past performance and envision ever more benefits from our solutions. The Littlehaven Sea Wall and Promenade scheme, as an example, is a good showcase for - vision, intelligent investment and working together - delivering community infrastructure and environmental change to positively benefit the way people live, work and play. Looking to the future, our industry’s prospects are supported by the Government through the National Infrastructure Plan 2020 and evolving energy and water policies. In spending money wisely we should not assume that one size will fit all, but look to focus investment intelligently in the areas that will most benefit where we live, work and play. Difficult decisions will need to be made about how we balance our water, energy, and land-use. In some areas change will be needed; becoming smarter and more joined-up in how we meet development needs and in the way we use our natural assets and resources. A longer term view needs to feed into, and shape, responses to immediate issues and opportunities - perhaps our plans need to start looking to 2050? As we emerge from the recession there is little doubt about the abundance of opportunities across the environmental sector. It is clear that as an industry we are thriving and as long as we continue to invest in the right schemes the lights will stay on, the water will keep flowing and our environment will remain safe and secure. I hope you enjoy reading this publication and in doing so gain an understanding of the tremendous depth, breadth and vibrancy in our industry today. Using our most valuable commodities wisely – time, talent and treasure – we will achieve the right kind of economic growth which will form a remarkable legacy in years to come.

ACQUISITION
WORKING TOGETHER TO SECURE THE FUTURE Two leading engineering consultancies have joined forces and have embarked on a series of landmark projects
M
ergers and acquisitions between leading engineering consultancies have been making headlines in past weeks, with AECOM moving to buy URS, and ARCADIS reaching an agreement to acquire Hyder Group. In the Contracting industry, Sussex construction firm Mackley’s recent acquisition by Dutch-based international contractor Van Oord has secured the former’s future and the two companies are now embarking on landmark projects to build their solid foundation. Senior management from Mackley and Van Oord talk to CIWEM about the success of the merger, and detail the work they’re undertaking to transform the UK’s flood defence and coastal construction market. Van Oord and Mackley have been working together in Team Van Oord for more than a decade. As the construction partner for the Environment Agency Medmerry Management realignment scheme, the partners, including Kier Group and most recently Royal HaskoningDHV, have been working together formally in the JV since 2006, but informally since 1996. Of the Mackley acquisition, Paul Verheul, COO of Van Oord said: ‘Mackley is a strong brand and their wide variety of marine expertise and dedicated staff is a perfect match for Van Oord. We
know each other well through our long standing partnership in Team Van Oord, where Mackley plays a crucial part in our joint work for the Environment Agency. We are both family-owned companies and our cultures and values are fully aligned. With Mackley on board we will be able to significantly strengthen our innovative offering to the UK’s growing need for flood defense solutions.’ Mackley Managing Director Tony Camilleri echoes his sentiments: ‘We are delighted with this acquisition. We are clearly operating in a market that offers significant potential, and with the backing of Van Oord, Mackley will now embark on a solid growth strategy.’ The partnership has received extensive industry recognition this year for their work on Medmerry, the largest managed realignment of the open coast in Europe, and the first in the UK, on the stretch of southeast coast most threatened by coastal flooding. Team Van Oord have maximised the creation of intertidal habitat, replacing vital areas being lost in the Solent, allowing new defences to be built protecting thousands more properties along the coastline. The scheme has picked up awards for sustainability, innovation and stakeholder engagement from organisations such as Institute of Civil Engineers (ICE), Chartered Institution of Ecology and Environmental
Management (CIEEM), International Building Press (IBP) and Constructing Excellence, and has also been shortlisted for the British Construction Industry Project of the Year Award, being judged in London later in the year. Building on the success of Medmerry Mackley have recently started construction on The Brighton i360. At 162 metres high, and with an observation pod rising to 138 metres, the i360 will be the world’s first vertical cable car and the tallest observation tower outside London, offering a new perspective on the fun loving seaside city of Brighton. Sited at the root end of the historic West Pier on Brighton’s seafront, the i360 has a slender, elegant design with a futuristic pod allowing 200 visitors at a time to enjoy the surrounding view as it slowly unfolds. The international team who created the London Eye are behind the project, which has been 8 years in the making. Tony Camilleri, managing director of Mackley, said, ‘We are very much looking forward to bringing our local knowledge and coastal experience to the project and to working with this international team on what will become a world famous landmark.’ ● For more information about Mackley, Team Van Oord, Medmerry and the Brighton i360 please visit www.mackley.co.uk.
