WELCOME
O
ne thing’s for sure, at the Mind Body Spirit Festival visitors saw things they’d never seen before and experienced things they didn’t know were possible. Whether it was a brand new type of yoga, a lesser-known form of healing, or something tasty to eat – intriguing products and practices with the power to relax and renew were what it was all about. From the first whiff of incense to the closing trill of the flutes, the festival was a feast for the senses. On the main stage, performers from all over the world danced, sang and demonstrated mantras and martial arts. Over at Oasis of Sound guests were lulled by the melodies of sacred instruments, while in the Ceremony Space attendees were brought closer together through a series of intimate and uplifting sessions. At Nourish, chefs and nutritionists whipped up a banquet of healthy recipes and at the Wellbeing Studio visitors had the chance to sample classes, from dance and yoga to meditation and life coaching. In between it all, stalls glinted with crystals and charms, prayer mats and pendants, while experts in alternative therapies, predictions and spirituality answered questions and offered advice. The mood was both mellow and uplifting, vibrant and relaxed. Attendees and exhibitors alike left with new ideas and a sense of community.

SHOW HIGHLIGHTS RED KITE FLUTES
GENERATION SONG IT WAS A PARTICULARLY POIGNANT appearance at the festival for Louise Hutton of Red Kite Flutes. Established in 2007 by Louise’s husband, Phil, she is now continuing the business with friends, following his unexpected death last year. While at first she couldn’t bear to reenter the workshop, she was inspired by the kind words of people who knew Phil and who were passionate about his craft. Speaking at the festival, Louise said: ‘It’s just so important to keep Phil’s legacy going. We had such a response from our clients that I thought, well I can’t not go on.’ Red Kite Flutes are based on Native American designs and are all handmade using a range of wood, from simple softwoods to the finest ebony. Louise has now learned how to tune the flutes herself and has passed on the skill of making to them to the next generation. Louise has fulfilled all of Phil’s old orders and are now putting their own names to brand new instruments. Guests of the show were lucky enough to hear the flutes being played by Louise’s friend, Steve Cloudsong. • redkiteflutes.co.uk SILENT DISCO
THE SOUND OF SILENCE
ATTENDEES OF THE SHOW WON’T HAVE FAILED TO notice the guests who weaved their way between stands, dancing to a rhythm only they could hear. The silent disco was run by the Contemporary School of Yoga, founded by Richard George to teach and inspire a new generation of budding yoga practitioners. From a base in Birmingham the school offers courses, retreats and workshops for those looking to learn more about yoga and to train as teachers. While the school honours the traditions of shamanism and the origins of yoga, it favours a freer approach that celebrates what the body can do and focuses less on control. • contemporaryschoolofyoga.com
CATH LLOYD
WHEN DAD BECAME JOAN
CATH LLOYD’S LIFE CHANGED forever when, over 30 years ago, she was called home from university and told that her father was transgender and wished to begin gender reassignment. Now, having finally come to terms with the situation, Cath has written a book about her experience, focusing on the challenges she faced and the ways she overcame them. ‘It took me 29 years to accept it,’ said Cath at the festival. ‘We’ve always had a relationship, but I was struggling.’ Cath’s biggest fear was that she would lose her father, but over time she came to realise that it was only the outside that had changed. She now wants to help other people who are facing challenges and finding it hard to cope and her book includes a self-help section. ‘I was struggling alone, and I don’t want other people to struggle,’ she says. She was using the festival to launch a new self-help service which involved filling in a simple questionnaire and then receiving advice, including practical tips on how deal with difficult situations. • www.cathlloyd.co.uk
SPIRITUALISTS NATIONAL UNION
PART OF THE UNION DID YOU KNOW THERE IS A union for professional spiritualists? If you didn’t, the SNU’s presence at the festival might have been enlightening. The Spiritualists National Union supports and has helped to unify around 340 spiritualist churches and centres throughout the UK
and has grown to over 2,700 individual members. One of these is Suzanne Gibson Foy, a minister whose mediumistic experiences began over twenty-five years ago. She now works publicly as a medium and is also a holistic therapist, qualified counsellor and psychotherapist. Suzanne explained that the SNU owns a large residential college called The Arthur Findlay
College, located near Stansted airport. The college building, Stansted Hall, was gifted to the Spiritualists’ National Union by J Arthur Findlay, a former honorary president, in 1964. This beautiful building, built in 1871, now holds over 80 courses every year in subjects such as mediumship, trance art, trance healing and psychic exploration. • www.snu.org.uk
SHOW HIGHLIGHTS MUSE
SWITCHING OFF
AS ANYONE WITH A BUSY mind knows, meditation isn’t always easy. Turning off the brain’s ramblings for even a few seconds can be deceptively tricky. Muse, a headset that claims to translate mental activity into the guiding sounds of weather, aims to make meditation simpler and help practitioners find a focused calm. At the Muse stand was Cory Haley who explained that the headset is an EEG device, as used by neuroscience researchers. In short, it measures brain activity. The device
is linked to a pair of headphones so that when the mind is busy, the user hears stormy weather and when the mind settles, the user hears a more peaceful sound. This instant feedback means that the meditator knows exactly how they are doing and receives positive reinforcement when they have reached a truly relaxed state. The device is also linked to a mobile app so that when meditation is over, the user can review their brain activity on a graph. • choosemuse.com
SESAMME
A TASTE OF HAPPINESS
FOR MANY VISITORS TO THE SHOW SESAMME WAS A first port of call. Laid out with creamy cylinders, swirled with chocolate and topped with nuts and fruit, their display was particularly enticing. On closer inspection the sweet treats were revealed to be halva, a desert popular in the Middle East and Eastern Europe. SesamMe make halva by blending tahini (ground sesame seeds) with sugar, a foaming agent and whatever extra toppings they desire, including white chocolate, pistachio and cherry. Naturally lactose free, wheat free and vegan, it’s a good choice for anyone looking for something sweet. When they’re not at festivals SesamMe can be found in shopping centres in London, Milton Keynes and Essex where they also sell jars of tahini and date honey, a rich, naturally sweet fruit syrup extracted from dates. • www.sesamme.com MICHELLE TUCK JEWELLERY
DIAMOND STANDARD
THERE WERE SEVERAL JEWELLERY stands at the Mind Body Spirit Festival this year, offering delicate necklaces, amulets and charms. One of these was Michelle Tuck Jewellery whose pieces, inspired by ancient coins and sunken treasures, are designed and handcrafted in Britain. Michelle started her business in 2003 with the aim of making items that have a spiritual component and a deeper meaning than that offered by most fast fashion. During the recession Michelle left the UK and went back to her native Cape Town, but she has now returned, bringing new pieces and a renewed determination. ‘My skills have changed dramatically over time,’ she explained. Some of her jewellery now involves complicated casting techniques and features a range of gemstones all bought from Hatton Garden in London. She says that she also uses diamonds to amplify the metaphysical properties of other gemstones. • michelletuckjewellery.com
SHOW HIGHLIGHTS ANNA MALONE
ALCHEMY OF SOUND
ONE OF THE SPECIAL FEATURES OF THIS year’s show was the Alchemy of Sound space, a yurt within which practitioners used sound, music, mantra and meditation to create an immersive, deeply relaxing experience for those inside. From the soothing chants and sacred instruments of Katia Mayen to Tori Lui’s ‘sound healing’, which offered the chance to ‘melt into cosmic womb consciousness,’ the tent was never quiet for long. Presiding over the scene was Anne Malone, founder of sound healing centre, Oasis of Sound. When she wasn’t inside the Alchemy of Sound tent, bathing listeners with the music of singing bowls, the drums and the hang, she was next door showing off her newest form of sound therapy. You may already have heard of the music produced by ‘playing’ Tibetan singing bowls, but
chances are you won’t have seen it done in quite the way carried out by Anne. That’s because the technique she uses, in which the bowls are placed on certain parts of the body and then played by running a mallet around the rim, is something brand new – a form of therapy she came up with herself. Anne demonstrated the way that the water in the singing bowls vibrates when they are played. It was this phenomenon that encouraged her to place the bowls onto the bodies of her clients. When this is done she says that the vibrations run through the water and into the person receiving the treatment. The water in the body vibrates in time with the bowl and any stagnation or blockages are ‘vibrated out’. Guests receiving the treatment are blindfolded and listen to music. ‘It’s like being inside a lovely cocoon,’ said Anne. • bluemuse.co.uk
CONFEDERATION OF HEALING ORGANISATIONS
ASPECTS OF HEALING
IN THE CENTRE OF THE SHOW, A collaboration between The Confederation of Healing Organisations (CHO) and Mind Body Spirit delivered Aspects of Healing, a programme of talks, live demonstrations and immersive experiences. The CHO is the leading charity advancing the practice of healing. Chief Executive Sue Knight was on hand to help visitors and explain the work of the charity. ‘We’re here to communicate the intention of healing and how it can be used in everyday life,’ she said. Healing covers a wide range of different practices, but in general healers believe they are a conduit for healing energy, channelling it from something greater than themselves, whether that be a divine source or a universal energy of which we are all a part. One of the talks on offer was given by Shuna Watkinson, a registered healing practitioner who works within the NHS. Shuna provides her services for the East and North Hertfordshire NHS Trust which covers three hospitals. She explained her belief that healing and the NHS are highly compatible. She pointed to the positive reaction of patients and was keen to demonstrate how healing can have a beneficial and supportive role alongside clinical medicine. With a group of volunteers Shuna covers a range of departments within the three hospitals, including clinics, wards, the Macmillan chemotherapy centre and endoscopy. • www.the-cho.org.uk FREE STAGE COMPERED BY COMPOSER AND MUSICIAN, Tim Wheater, the Free Stage gave exhibitors the chance to share their work with a larger audience. Over the course of the weekend the stage played host to a huge range of performers. Yogi Ashokananda talked about ‘yoga in life’ and answered questions on how to live a yoga lifestyle. Jasmin Harsono of Emerald x Tiger gave a preview from her upcoming ‘Breathe Love’ meditation album, while Kwali Kumara told a large crowd all about how Kundalini yoga is inspired by a mix of Hindu schools and practises. Kwali led the audience through a series of mantras and chants to introduce them to the practice. Also on stage were Jason Chan, demonstrating Tai Chi and Chi Kung and singer songwriter Zen Blyth, who appeared on The X-Factor in 2015. On Sunday, a range of upbeat and colourful performers closed the show, including Melissa BellyDance and the Mahira Girls with a lively belly dance routine and Dirish Shaktidas performing shakti dance, also known as ‘the yoga of dance’.
Antonia Harman
Divine Empowerment
A
ntonia’s story could be straight out of a film. Eleven years ago she was walking down the street when her companion, Lucie, fell to the floor complaining of excruciating ear pain. Lucie had burst her ear drum five times and was awaiting a £4,500 surgery with an anticipated 50 per cent success rate. At first, Antonia was worried. She had only attended one short healing course and wasn’t sure she even believed in it. But with her friend in agony she placed her hands over Lucie’s ears and channelled energy. What came next could give Alien a run for its money. ‘I pulled what
looked like a snake made from heat waves out of Lucie’s ear,’ she says. ‘My first healing, a channelling tug of war. The serpent dropped. It was undulating, squirming around. I aimed energy towards it and it vanished. After some research I discovered it was an energetic parasite.’ Once the process was completed her friend’s pain had gone. ‘Lucie was cured and cancelled the surgery, she has been pain free ever since. It was my eureka moment. Right there and then I chose to give up my presenting career to embark on one in healing.’ Antonia now offers bespoke healing
for individual clients under her brand, Divine Empowerment. During the sessions Antonia says she can solve a range of issues from depression to back pain often in a single session. She believes that emotion is the route of disease. If the emotions are cleared then the disease no longer serves a purpose. Starting in 2019, Antonia will launch subscriptionbased live weekly classes designed to help others awaken their own latent healing abilities, as well as three-day workshops (check out her website for more details). These are gifts that Antonia believes everyone has but which lie dormant.
LIVE HEALING
A
t the festival, Antonia ran a live demonstration in which she invited guests with emotional trauma up onto the main stage. The live healing session saw one participant having the trauma from a baby’s recent passing being cleared, while another dealt with the passing of their father. Later, she also ran a workshop in which she woke up participants’ latent abilities to dissolve minor trauma, something they practiced with their partners.

MAS SAJADy
TUNING IN TO BETTER HEALTH
M
as Sajady used to be a seemingly ordinary guy, working in IT. Then came two neardeath experiences. The main one occurred in 2006 when Mas was tubing down a river in the rainforest. Having been pulled under the water for over eight minutes he almost drowned. But what could have been a catastrophic event actually changed his life – for the better. When he came round, he says he could see the frequencies that make up the world and the internal
issues suffered by others. Now, Mas travels the globe sharing the skills he has gained and helping others through a process he calls ‘medihealing’ in which he reprograms a person’s core frequencies (Mas still favours IT-type language). By doing so he says he has the potential to transform a person’s life and enable them to overcome challenges, be they physical, emotional, related to relationships, business or spirituality. Medihealing® is the process Mas uses with clients. It is a combined
meditation and healing practice that merges the benefits of meditation with something he calls ‘Pure Source healing frequency’. This means that he works on a person’s frequency blueprint to raise their vibration and awaken their own power for self-healing and life transformation. Rather than having the power to heal himself, Mas says he acts as a conduit for ‘pure energy’ to manifest itself. His core offering is a 21-day programme that includes live medihealing as well as group therapy.
MAS SAJADy ◆ ◆ ◆ ◆ ◆
GRoup dynamics
A
t this year’s Festival, Mas gathered small groups of visitors and practiced Medihealing in a group format. Looking on were members of his team, including Ginny Evans, who started working for Mas in 2013 after experiencing a healing session for herself. She explains that people respond to Mas because their body is adjusting to what’s happening at the spirit level. ‘We often say he knows us better than we know ourselves,’ she says, laughing.

SPIRIT CAFE
FEEDING THE SOUL
I
t’s not just a bunch of rules and regulations,’ says Lori Lawlor, founder of the Spirit Cafe and leader of Harvest Ministries church in Birmingham. This is what she wants people to know about the Christianity she practices which she says is relaxed and welcoming. One of her main focuses is the Holy Spirit and her goal is to prepare a place where the Holy Spirit is welcome. The Spirit Cafe, held on the second and last Friday of every month, is an extension of the church
and of this goal. It is a place where people can come and sample not from a menu of food (though free tea and coffee is always available) but from a list of therapies, including spiritual readings, dream interpretation, physical healing, peace treatment and spiritual cleansing. Lori founded the Spirit Cafe with her daughter, Jessica, in 2014 because she wanted to share her faith and bring it to others. She also wanted to offer an alternative to the psychics she saw advertising in her local area. At the
Spirit Cafe, Lori says that all treatments are done through the power of the Holy Spirit and that many people feel the presence of God in a tangible way. ‘We’ve had people crying because they didn’t realise God was real,’ she explained at the festival. Now there are spirit cafes globally, from Canada and the US to France and the Ukraine and Lori runs training sessions for those looking to set up their own; the sessions include practical tips on how to run a cafe as well as prophetic training and activation.
ON THE MENU All Spirit Cafe treatments are free and cover a range of areas: ◆◆ Spiritual cleansing focuses on feelings of guilt and shame - the Spirit Cafe team try to help a person receive forgiveness and unburden themselves. ◆◆ Dream interpretation is about unpicking dreams and working out any hidden messages from God. Lori explains that not all dreams are sent from God and it’s worth working out which ones are. ◆◆ Peace treatments are about concentrated and peaceful prayer time. The team invite the Holy Spirit to wash over the person receiving the treatment. ◆◆ Spiritual readings are sessions in which three members of the team relay pictures or messages received from the Holy Spirit. ◆◆ Physical healing is for people in pain. The team invite the power of the Holy Spirit to heal.
