MRO AMERICAS WAS AN IDEAL LOCATION FOR FINALIZING LONG-TERM DEALS, EXPANDING EXISTING RELATIONSHIPS, UNVEILING NEW PLANS AND MAKING NEW CONTACTS.
Safran’s NacelleLife gets new lease
Hawaiian Airlines Jim Landers and Safran’s Alain Berger signing the renewal at MRO Americas
SAFRAN NACELLES signed a six-year contract renewal with Hawaiian Airlines to service the thrust reversers on the carrier’s 24 Airbus A330ceo aircraft. Safran Nacelles will continue to support Hawaiian at its Maintenance, Repair, and Overhaul (MRO) shops located in the United States and France during scheduled maintenance or one-time repairs during unscheduled maintenance. Safran Nacelles also provides access to a pool of thrust reversers. “Since 2013, Safran Nacelles has been a trusted partner that shares our
commitment to safety and reliability. We expect Safran Nacelles to continue to provide exceptional support for our A330 fleet,” said Hawaiian Airlines Senior Vice President, Technical Operations, Jim Landers. It is Safran’s NacelleLife support and services packages that covers all of Safran Nacelles’ after-sales activities and aims to provide a responsive, reliable, cost effective and high-quality service. “We are pleased that Hawaiian Airlines has renewed its confidence in Safran Nacelles for its A330ceo fleet. Safran Nacelles teams, including those at the US and
France repair shops, are fully mobilized to keep Hawaiian Airlines’ fleet in operation,” said Safran Nacelles’ Executive Vice President Customer Support & Services, Alain Berger. Safran Nacelles also signed a ten-year service contract with Viva Air Colombia for the nacelles of its growing fleet of A320neo aircraft powered by CFM International LEAP-1A engines. CFM International is a 50/50 joint company between Safran Aircraft Engines and GE. The contract offers nacelle OEM warranties and is carried out as part of the NacelleLife support and services package. Viva Air Colombia will have access to Safran Nacelles’ global stock of spare engine nacelles that equip the airline’s growing fleet of Airbus A320neo family jetliners. The Colombian airline will also benefit from OEM guaranteed maintenance, repair and overhaul solutions at Safran Nacelles repair stations. Jhon Luna, Viva Air Colombia Director of Maintenance & Engineering said: “Our young A320neo fleet needs all the support and expertise of an OEM like Safran Nacelles to keep our aircraft in operation with the highest level of quality and to carry out the necessary repairs in the shortest possible time.” Berger commented: “We are pleased to support Viva Air Colombia in its A320neo maintenance operations. They can count on Safran Nacelles teams, particularly those at the Indianapolis, USA repair shop, who are fully mobilized to support Viva Air Colombia on a daily basis.”

Lufthansa Technik and AvAir strengthened ties at the show
AvAir and Lufthansa Technik sign aftermarket deal INVENTORY SOLUTIONS provider AvAir and Lufthansa Technik have signed an addendum to their long-term aftermarket sales agreement. This addendum includes a second large material takeover of 9,000 additional aircraft components bringing AvAir’s total to more than 18,000. The first material transfer to AvAir was under their 2020 agreement. The agreement also includes as-removed and unserviceable units in addition to serviceable and overhauled items. The agreement implies that Lufthansa Technik receives a share of the proceeds from resold components under a profit share agreement. With this transaction, AvAir has added a wider range of commercial and regional aircraft material to its inventory. The assets include parts for Boeing 737, 737NG, 747-400, 747-8, 777 Freighter, 787 and Airbus A320, A330, A340, A350, A380. Along with regional aircraft types, and miscellaneous material. “The initial agreement was signed in 2020, and it has proved to be an overwhelming success for both parties. Air Canada agrees GE90 support AIR CANADA has extended its cooperation with Air France Industries KLM Engineering & Maintenance with the renewal of a multi-year GE90 support contract between the two airlines. The original contract was signed in 2010 for a package of repair and maintenance services specially adapted to meet the Canadian airline’s requirements for the GE90-115B engines on its fleet of Boeing 777s. Through the new extended engine support contract, the solutions delivered by AFI KLM E&M include shop visits, LRU support, provision of spare engines and on-wing/on-site support. “The renewal of GE90 support services offers further indication of the enduring cooperation between our two groups. Pride in seeing our teams’ commitment to the customer being duly recognized and rewarded through longstanding and fruitful relationships, such as those we have been developing with Air Canada over the past ten years,” said Air France Industries Executive Vice President, Géry Mortreux. Air Canada’s decision to extend and expand its relationship with AFI KLM E&M constitutes a mark of confidence and satisfaction regarding the support solutions designed and implemented by the Airline-MRO provider, which bases its service approach on attentiveness and close-knit relationships with the customer. The Canadian airline acknowledges and appreciates AFI KLM E&M’s capacity to take into account the operational needs and challenges faced by airlines when it comes to defining and implementing adapted maintenance programs, given the latter’s own position as a maintenance provider attached to a major airline. “The appreciation of our needs and constraints that results from its experience as an MRO/airline, as well as the level of attentiveness demonstrated by AFI KLM E&M, are invaluable markers of quality and security, coupled with the assurance that we will benefit from solutions that have been tailored to the operational realities we face. Based on all these factors and given the positive experience of the past ten years of cooperation on the GE90 product, the extension of our partnership constitutes a measured and logical decision for Air Canada,” said Air Canada Strategic Procurement and Corporate Real Estate Vice President, Gilles Neron.

Panasonic, 8tree map out future PANASONIC AVIONICS Corporation and 8tree announced an expansion of their relationship and availability of the dentCHECK dent-mapping and reporting service. The expanded service will now include support for Large Area Dent Mapping at customer locations. This builds on the existing ad hoc dent8tree’s dentCHECK system mapping services offered at Panasonic Technical Service (PTS) regional line stations at Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) and London Heathrow (LHR) area airports. This service will allow Panasonic Avionics customers a convenient, accurate, and efficient way to protect their commercial aircraft investment, avoiding unnecessary costs and time delays. The service will complement PTS’s existing line of best-in-class products and services, continuing its history of being a premier MRO service solution provider. “We are pleased to announce the expansion of our relationship with 8tree,” said Sean Gavin, SVP of Panasonic Technical Services. “Using the 8tree scanning technologies allows us to deliver highly accurate information much more quickly than previously possible using traditional methods. This allows our passenger and cargo airline customers to make very timely, datadriven, operational decisions.” The introduction of large area dent mapping service is particularly suited to hail damage scenarios and follows a series of very successful service jobs completed by Panasonic Avionics and 8tree. In the aftermath of an extreme hail event in Roswell, New Mexico in 2021, several severely damaged wide-body aircraft were inspected using dentCHECK’s large area panoramic mapping feature. A comprehensive itemized digital report, containing key damage metrics, were completed in days, as opposed to the months it would have taken with traditional manual methods. “After the incredible results in Roswell last year, expanding the scope of our dentCHECK service relationship with Panasonic Avionics was a natural choice,” said Arun Chhabra, CEO of 8tree. “Operators will benefit from the faster, more efficient mapping of catastrophic hail damage, allowing them to make more informed decisions about aircraft serviceability and return to service, while alongside building more robust aircraft records.”

CONFERENCE
Talking Points from MRO Americas Conference Sessions Supply chain, cargo conversions and awards. Big themes and big news.
SUPPLY CHAIN PRESSURE ACUTE FOR OPERATORS, MANUFACTURERS COMPANIES THROUGHOUT the commercial aerospace supply chain are re-examining everything from how they forecast demand to what they can handle in-house as part of broad efforts to mitigate increasing risk as passenger airline activity ramps up. Speakers on multiple MRO Americas panels made clear that supply chain stability is emerging as the most significant threat to a steady recovery. Some of the bottlenecks are easy to spot—such as a supplier not having enough technicians to repair components. In other cases, the issues are less clear. U.S.-based regional operator Republic Airways’ has 24
responded is by embracing more dynamic modeling. “We are now sending demand signals to our suppliers at a more frequent level,” said Republic’s Supply Chain VP, Drew Skaff. “The theory is that the supply chain will become a little bit more nimble and reactive. It does require more work on behalf of our supply chain, because we are producing more orders. We’re receiving more orders. But we have noticed that that has produced dividends in terms of increasing our internal service level to our operation. So it’s working.”

PRESTIGIOUS AWARDS PRESENTED AT MRO AMERICAS
THREE AVIATION luminaries received prestigious awards during Aviation Week’s MRO Americas. Aviation Week Network presented the 2022 Lifetime Achievement Award to Mick Adams (pictured top), a 40-year industry veteran. He rose from an apprentice to eventually take on leadership roles of Monarch Aircraft Engineering, Etihad Engineering and most recently, STS Aviation Services, where he oversees their operations in Europe as CEO. In addition, Airlines for America’s Engineering, Maintenance and Materiel Council presented its 56th Nuts and Bolts awards to Michael Moore (pictured above) and Paul McGraw. Moore, recently retired senior VP maintenance operations & MRO services, Delta TechOps, was honored for his “28-year career with airlines, MROs and industry advisory services.” In the non-airline category, Paul McGraw, recently retired A4A VP operations and safety, won for “his commitment to safety, maintenance and engineering, supporting and fostering the transformation of the industry through 45 years of dedicated service on behalf of America’s major airlines.”

CARGO CONVERSIONS SURGE, BUT SO DO CHALLENGES
THE CARGO AIRCRAFT conversion market is surging and is expected to climb even higher, but the sector faces numerous headwinds as it seeks to meet rising demand. “Last year was a record for freighter conversions with about 110, and we still see upside,” said Mike Stengel, a senior associate at AeroDynamic Advisory and moderator of a panel on cargo conversions at MRO Americas. He is forecasting that conversations will more than double, from about 80 a year before the COVID-19 crisis, to 180 by the middle of the decade, before easing back to 140 annually by the end of the 2020s. GA Telesis President and CEO Abdol Moabery attributes the increased demand to the Amazon effect. “You can order a product in London and get it the next day from the U.S.,” he said, adding that such demand is evolving the fastest in China. “I don’t think we’re going to [return to] a period like 2018-19 when dedicated cargo planes were struggling,” he said.

AERFIN EYES FURTHER EXPANSION IN RECOVERING AMERICAS REGION
AFTER SETTING UP a parts warehouse in Atlanta three years ago focusing on supply for the Embraer E-Jet segment with more than 200-part numbers, AerFin is looking at further expansion opportunities in the Americas region. “The U.S. was a key strategic area for growth prepandemic anyway but given how strongly the domestic market performed in the past two years, accelerated growth in the U.S. region has been brought into even sharper focus,” says James Bennett, commercial director at the aircraft end-of-life services specialist. 26
Bennett estimates the company has around $12 million worth of inventory in the U.S. alone across different locations. “This has expanded into different product lines but principally is Airbus A320 family, Boeing 737NG and Embraer E-Jet,” he says. AerFin has recently added to its U.S.-based sales team and in the second quarter of this year plans to open an office in Miami. “We’re continuing to move inventory into region to support customer demand,” Bennett adds.

COOPESA RAMPS UP FOR THE 737-800BCF a lot of excitement after doing so much preparation and now starting the work. We’re finally able to showcase what we can do and we’re partnering with one of the biggest names in aviation. FOR OVER 56 years Coopesa RL has been offering an excellent combination of equipment and skilled personnel in worldclass standards for aircraft maintenance needs. Aviation Week caught up with Kenneth Waugh, CEO of Coopesa, to talk about its latest conversion program What’s the status of the Boeing 737800BCF program announced May 2021? The first conversion line started about 30 days ago. In preparation, we trained and organized a dedicated space. There’s
How long do you expect the first conversion to take? The first will take 130 days. We’ve done a lot of modeling to understand the work so our goal is to take it down to 67 days. How long do you expect that learning curve to take? It depends on the complexity of each plane, but I think it will take three or four conversions to get the hang of it and understand what else we can develop, such as tools.
For additional coverage from MRO Americas and ongoing MRO news please visit AVIATIONWEEK.COM/SHOWS-EVENTS/ MRO-AMERICAS
How many aircraft do you expect to complete annually? We’re going to start a second line on July 15, which will run in parallel with the first. Once we are up to speed, we should be able to deliver close to eight aircraft per year. Did you have to add staff to support this conversion program? Coopesa is a co-op, so all of the technicians are company owners. We have a steady in-house training program and we know that we are going to grow with this Boeing program. So, we assigned technicians with a lot of experience to work on the conversion and we are developing new technicians to backfill our workforce to enable us to further grow and provide more services.

PAVILION: GO LIVE
Go Live, go global
The Go Live! sessions saw many experts in their field offering opinions and advice
Sustainability was at the heart of this year’s Go Live! Theater where the sessions encompassed cost saving innovations, digitalization, the workforce, military aviation logistics and more
T
he Go Live! Theater at MRO Americas 2022 featured innovative sessions, case studies, and product briefings covering the hottest topics and industry trends, right in the center of all the action on the exhibition show floor. Open to all MRO Americas attendees, the first day set the tone and standard of expertise that would
34
run for the entire show. The Go Live! MRO Leadership Panel had the subtitle this year of “Reducing Emissions and Prioritizing ESG Initiatives”. Leaders from across the MRO industry discussed how they are working with the airline community to reduce emissions and prioritize and promote environmental, social and governance (ESG) initiatives.
With industry leaders from the adjacent Sustainability Zone, the endeavors to reduce environmental footprints were communicated to an engrossed audience. From the smallest to the largest, the innovation to tackle this global challenge were many. The Nanocomposite Protective Layer (NPL) is a nano-scale barrier which is a sustainable, zero-VOC, water-based technology. Oceanit Laboratories has developed this Aeropel NPL to provide superior corrosion protection for airframe structures and components. Its application requires minimal personal protection equipment, and it dries faster than the
traditional anti-corrosion primer. NPL works by imparting low surface energy characteristics to protect the metallic substrate, repelling the moisture that can initiate the corrosion process. Keeping aviation structures clean of harmful contaminants is also the job of Laser Photonics Corporation’s Clean Tech Laser Blasting. It uses laser technology systems to clean aerospace piece parts and so extend the lifespan of the aircraft. Laser Blasting eliminates the need for harsh chemicals or the consumable heavy
sandblasting processes used previously for mitigating corrosion. This disruptive technology is changing the capabilities of traditional media blasting and eliminating the aspects of past processes that are subject to FDA and OSHA enforcement. Inspecting those airframes has been a manual process for too long, but now drones are increasing inspection productivity. New company Rizse has a drone, an autonomous system, that can fly around the aircraft and provide greater insights into the airframe condition,
enabling technicians to make the best decisions quickly. Henkel Aviation highlighted the need for collaboration across the value chain to support the industry’s net-zero commitments. In October 2021, the 77th IATA AGM approved a resolution for the global air transport industry to achieve new-zero carbon emission by 2050. This aligned the industry with the Paris Agreement goal for stopping global warming from exceeding 1.5°C. A major contribution to aviation’s overall target 35
PAVILION: GO LIVE
is the use of Sustainable Aviation Fuels (SAF). The second biggest is offsetting and carbon capture along the aerospace value chain. As a global material and technology supplier, Henkel presented its vision for the industry to achieve those netzero commitments through sustainable operations, innovative compliant materials, and greater collaboration throughout the supply chain. During the MRO Leadership Panel, Frank Stevens, Vice President, Global MRO Centers, Embraer Services & Support, said: “It’s very important that we look at sustainability and how we support our airlines and mostly we’re working on a lot of different prospects and the biggest thing is we’re looking at 2050 for our net-zero carbon and we’re doing a lot of things to approach that such as our turboprop fleet.” Stevens explained that the turboprops could use SAF and there was a lot of focus on that while hybrid electric was a future step. 36
Antony Szafranek, Senior Vice President, Americas, Rolls-Royce explained during the MRO Leadership Panel that his company is: “focused around three main areas, one is improving gas turbine technology today. We think there is a huge role in the medium to long range. Second part is around our role in stimulating the acceptance of SAF. We have a mission to test all of our current product portfolio by 2023 to demonstrate that they are compatible with SAF. The third piece is around the novel technologies, electrification, battery storage is a key element and doing it safely.” Another advocate of alternative fuels was Pall Aerospace and its filtration and purification technologies for hydrogen combustion and fuel cell applications for the hybrid propulsion and electric aircraft of tomorrow. The Pall proposed technologies range from SAF, which utilizes conventional filtration and purification technologies, to hydrogen
used in direct combustion and fuel cells for electricity generation. At the MRO Leadership Panel, Jason Reed, President, Flight Solutions Group, GA Telesis spoke of electrification. “Electrification is the way of the world these days. If you look at all the equipment on the runways and taxiways, a lot of that can go electric,” and added that, “on the supply side chain as well we have consolidated a lot of the networks of our suppliers so that ultimately is saving downstream effects of supply chains.” Pall Corporation meanwhile is leveraging its mature portfolio of technologies to develop aerospace specific solutions in support of the industry’s net-zero by 2050 goal. Green aviation initiatives are a key part of Trelleborg Aerospace’s sustainability concept that focuses on product life, buildings and infrastructure, production and compliance. For Trelleborg, the essential element is keeping these topics at the core of an
enterprise’s processes from engineering to implementation. GOL Aerotech also has a green aviation vision and shared its practical examples on how to reduce the industry’s environmental footprint. The company demonstrated its commitment with its treatment plant that is treating 100% of the effluent waste generated by the firm’s MRO activity. Its work led to a deeper understanding of how to treat fumes generated by aircraft painting before they are released and how technology can help reduce paper usage in an MRO environment. At the MRO Leadership Panel, Richard Kendall, Chief Commercial Officer, HAECO set out how his company’s green aviation vision work. “Through our activities we work very closely with our OEM partners. Through our own OEM business of cabin components, we have low weight seats for a more efficient weight of the aircraft to help reduce the fuel burn.” The Go Live! Theater expert rang of speakers demonstrated the huge variety of activity that is ongoing to meet the challenges of industry and society in the face of climate change.

PAVILION: NEW EXHIBITORS
A multiplicity of innovation The New Exhibitors Showcase once again shows the variety of organizations seeing the value in making their debut at MRO Americas
A mixture of company types made up the pavilion
“ It’s been a lot of folks and a lot of good meetings and everybody is bringing something to the table. It is not just a lot of chitter chatter, there is a lot of work out there.” Michael McMahan, Director of Sales, Latitude Aero
T
he New Exhibitors Showcase pavilion had a good mix of companies from a law firm to bearings repair and chemical providers. The New Exhibitors Showcase provides companies new to MRO Americas with a ‘light’ version of exhibiting in the hall. “We did the one in Amsterdam [MRO Europe]. Our US branch is a newer company. We have an office in the UK and Spain. It was good to do the Showcase at MRO Americas as it was a foot in the door because a lot of our customers are here,” said Carter Americas Vice President and Chief Operating Officer, Erick Sloan. A very different company on the pavilion was Latitude Aero, a specialist in seat refurbishment and repair. While Latitude Aero is about soft furnishings and deep cleaning upholsteries, its fellow New Exhibitors neighbor, Salloytech, specialized in cutting difficult-to-machine aerospace grade materials. For Salloytech, nickel and cobalt base superalloys as well as titanium and hardened steel, are its focus. Another very different outfit is
Aerochemicals, an alliance of independent chemical specialists for the aerospace industry, offering products and technical support. Chemicals are also the key for Reliance Aerotech Services, also new to the show. It provides cabin disinfection services along with a variety of other offerings from recruitment to project support. The Reidel Law Firm is different again, with strategic and operational counsel to clients for international trade. It can assist importers, exporters, and customs brokers in adhering with the US regulation of international trade. Spairliners, a joint venture between Air France Industries, KLM Engineering & Maintenance and Lufthansa Technik, brought an international dimension to the pavilion. Headquartered in Hamburg, Germany, Spairliners provides multiple services, including component access, on-site stock lease, stand-alone repair, and asset optimization. Southwest Aerospace Technologies also does repair, it is a certified FAA/ EASA 145 Repair Station. “We’ve been
to MRO [Americas] in the past and decided it was time to go ahead and start exhibiting. We were going to start small and in this case I like where we’re at, it’s a good environment and good people,” said Southwest’s President and Chief Executive Officer, Kurt Encinias. A good environment and good people - all greatreasons to be present on the New Exhibitors Showcase.

PAVILION: AMC
Skill sets on show
The AMC celebrates upcoming aviation maintenance talents from around the world
MRO Americas is home to the Aerospace Maintenance Competition which recognizes and celebrates the aviation maintenance technician
T
he Aerospace Maintenance Competition (AMC) is held annually in conjunction with Aviation Week Network’s MRO Americas. Teams competing represent educational institutions, commercial airlines, repair and manufacturing companies, general aviation and space. Taking place on the MRO Americas exhibition floor, the AMC provides an opportunity for
42
current and future maintenance professionals to showcase their abilities and see how they stack up against peers across the country. The AMC also hosts student competitors from educational institutions around the country. The Aerospace Maintenance Council, which runs the competition, is a non-profit organization that promotes and supports the aerospace maintenance community.
“The Aerospace Maintenance Council competition takes place every year. We were incorporated in 2014, although the competition took place in various different forms prior to that. Under the Council, it’s been around since we started, only stopping during the pandemic. So this is our fifth year running it,” said AMC Operations Vice President, Crystal Maguire. “It’s grown every year. I believe we started out with eight to ten events and this year we have 26 events and 74 teams. It’s about as big as we can get in this space. The AMC, presented by Snap-On, recognizes and celebrates the aviation
maintenance technician, and the knowledge and skill required to maintain safe, airworthy aircraft worldwide. The five-member teams compete in competitive events in one of six categories: Commercial Aviation, General Aviation, Space, Education, Military and Repair & Manufacturing. Other events during the AMC cover a range of activities. Clearance control valve and bleed valve solenoid was one event from AMC MRO Americas 2022. Others included airframe damage inspection, and external power receptacle. Air data test, antenna test and handheld bond meter test were all events, along with XR process optimization. In total, 27 such events took place during the AMC. “It’s almost like a two-day interview where these young men and women can showcase their skillsets to employers and compete a little bit for pride in their organizations and schools,” said Brian Bilski Talent Acquisition Business Partner, Northrop Grumman. “The value in being here is giving rewarding career opportunities to young men and women who have gained the skills sets, and indeed requirements to be, in avionics or aircraft technicians. So, as a leading producer of aircraft for the military, it’s very important for us.”
The competition is supported through the generous contributions of the aerospace community. Sponsors host events, provide prizes, and make monetary contributions. “Yes [we come every year] and we sponsor the competition,” said Chris Moore, International Representative, Airline Division, International Brotherhood of Teamsters. “It’s actually helping to create more and more aviation technicians. We come here representing the industry, promoting the job and the craft. We get to talk to folks from all over the world and tell them what it’s like to be an aviation mechanic.” Bronze sponsors have the opportunity to set up a table in the competition area’s, Recruitment Row, to discuss career opportunities with these future aviation workers. The platinum, gold and bronze sponsors include Snap-on, jetBlue, FedEx, Northrop Grumman, SkyWest and Pratt & Whitney. Mark Stucki, a Designated Trainer at SkyWest Airlines, said: “We’re here to recruit mechanics because we need the workforce, the students that are competing. We’re here to get our name, out there so they are interested in working for us once they get their airframe and
powerplant license. It’s a great event. Competitors from all across the country are here, as are all the vendors. It is a one stop shop. It’s a great way to get the name, SkyWest out there.” The AMC includes two awards, one for excellence and the other for an individual’s impact. The William F. “Bill” O’Brien Award for Excellence in Aircraft Maintenance, sponsored by Snap-on, is the grand prize for the team with the top overall score. The four-foot tall O’Brien trophy, featuring a bust of the first aviation mechanic Charles E. Taylor, remains with the winning team until the next competition. The second award is the Paul Cousins Award. It was created to recognize and remember the positive impact one individual made on the aviation maintenance craft and profession. Paul Cousins was a former president of the Australian Licensed Aircraft Engineers Association, and a strong advocate of the AMC, who passed away in 2018 from cancer. The award is presented each year to the non-United States based organization with the lowest score, in recognition of the influence Cousins had on expanding the competition to an international audience.

PAVILION: JOB FAIR
Inspiring women and DEI initiatives in the aviation workforce Aviation needs to attract more potential employees and jobfAIR is the Aviation Women Inspiring Next Generation initiative to make that happen
“W
e want to grow the number of women [working in aviation] to 25% by 2025,” said Aviation Women Inspiring Next Generation (A-WING) co-founder, Mary Wanke. Over the three days of MRO Americas, the A-WING volunteers were available to talk about
46
the job fair, called jobfAIR by A-WING, where a dedicated website allows interested women to find a job they like and request an interview. Wanke and her colleagues want to increase the percentage of women in the aviation industry because it is still in single digits and has remained so for decades.
The A-WING volunteers, who include men and women, intend to change all that. Wanke points out that aviation has far more jobs in non-technical areas that should be brought to light, prospective hires do not have to have technical qualifications. The belief that to work in aviation you have to be either a pilot or an engineer is a barrier to people choosing the industry. As such the jobfAIR website does not have any pilot jobs. Jobs on the website, calendly.com/ awing, covers aviation, space and

defense. Listed by company, there were 29 companies advertising one or more positions. By selecting a company and with just a few clicks a job can be selected and a time and day chosen during the week of MRO Americas could be picked. A position description can also be downloaded. The positions are wide ranging, from entry level jobs to director level roles. At A-WING’s booth, industry could meet privately and conduct interviews at the scheduled times. Wanke emphasizes that women of any age can apply, they do not have to be just out of school or college. Wanke
started her career as a pilot and then switched into engine MRO. Aligning forces with both Aviation Week & the Aerospace Maintenance Council (AMC), A-WING welcomed both applicants and hiring companies to its 2nd annual jobfAIR during the 2022 MRO Americas Conference. The first time A-WING organized the jobfAIR at MRO Americas in 2021 there were only four companies advertising jobs, so the jump to 29 is a substantial success. The overwhelming response from the attendees, organizers and applicants confirmed that A-WING’s effort was
a niche that the MRO, Aviation and Aerospace community felt needed to be filled. Aviation Week Network is an A-WING media partner. Company owners, hiring managers, HR executives or anyone involved in talent acquisition can contact Gretchen Pinkerton at gretchen@a-wing.org for open positions to be posted at future MRO Americas shows. The non-profit A-WING volunteers encourage Diversity, Equality & Inclusion and hope to bring an awareness, platform, and space for the needle to start moving in the doubledigit direction quickly.

PAVILION: OKLAHOMA
Oklahoma open to all
Oklahoma’s floor presence matched the state’s ambition
The aerospace industry is growing in the Sooner state and it made its presence known on the exhibition floor
O
klahoma is home to two of the world’s largest aircraft MRO centers and over 1,100 aerospace entities. Its central location in the United Sates and good all-year round flying weather make it an ideal hub. This year’s Oklahoma pavilion was equally central on the MRO Americas 2022 trade show floor. “Oklahoma has large aerospace presence, and it allows us to showcase that we are part of that. We’ve attended MRO Americas independently and thought it was a nice opportunity to be with other exhibitors who would complement us,” said AeroCore X owner Chris Dofflemeyer. For Oklahoma, aerospace and defense is the state’s second-largest industry and the state boasts some of the lowest tax rates in the nation making it a top destination for growing companies. The state chose to help its companies make

The state-funded pavilion proved beneficial for all
the most of MRO Americas by funding the pavilion. The pavilion also had state government departments on hand to help those seeing to expand to Oklahoma. The Oklahoma Aeronautics Commission, Greater Oklahoma City Chamber and Department of Commerce were both in attendance. “This is a premier event and there a lot of aerospace companies we might be able to do business with. Secondly we can get some exposure here to those people who need our services. We have support from Oklahoma for this
show. Oklahoma presents itself as one of the premier aerospace states and being identified with that is beneficial to us,” said AERO Component Repair, President William Moskwa. Oklahoma also offers competitive and straightforward incentive programs including its Engineer Tax Credit, designed to benefit both employer and employee in the aerospace Industry. The mix of government and private sector organizations on the Oklahoma pavilion made for an effective combination to promote the state and its industry.

PAVILION: QUÉBEC
Québec lands in Texas The Francophone province came to MRO Americas for the first time because its own industry saw an opportunity
Q
uébec is known for its capacity for innovation, especially in high-tech and cutting-edge industries, and its aerospace industry landed at MRO Americas in 2022 because it was viewed as the place to make connections. Investissement Québec International supports its province’s businesses, helping them grow and accelerate exports for these
Québec enterprises. The companies on the Québec Pavilion ranged from tooling manufacturers to test equipment providers to cleaning specialists with solutions for degreasing parts. One exhibitor, Groupe DCM, is among the largest sub-contractors of aerostructure, sub-assemblies and tubing in the province of Québec. Groupe DCM, through its divisions, offers turn-key services of
integrated creative manufacturing and repair solutions. Another company offering turnkey services is CEL Aerospace Test Equipment. Since 1988, it has been designing and commissioning complex test equipment for aircraft engines; turboprops, turboshaft, turbofan/Jets, as well as APUs. A company that was part of the trade mission but not formally part of the pavilion was FDC Aero Composites. “This is our first year at the show. We think something is coming back and we want to be in this place to be there when it starts and I think it is starting back right now,” said FDC Aero Composites’ director, Eric Parents. Another company at the pavilion, MHD-ROCKLAND, sets itself apart as a world-class provider of fixed-wing aircraft services and support for legacy aircraft operators around the globe. By
leveraging over 40 years of experience and strong industry partnerships, it ensures mission-readiness for its global customers. MHD-Rockland uses its world-wide locations to give customers access to hard-to-find parts and inhouse R&O services. It boasts one of the largest privately-owned P-3 and C-130 inventories in the world. Its fellow Québec pavilion company, Avianor, has over 25 years of experience in the design, engineering, certification, manufacturing, maintenance, modification
“ We chose MRO Americas because our companies in Québec, identified the show as a place to approach new clients. That is the reason we organized a trade mission for them and it’s been a real success. We intend to attend the show next year in Atlanta.” Guillermo Moyano, Principal Advisor, Aerospace, Defense & Security Invest Québec

PAVILION: THE SUSTAINABILITY ZONE
Making less go further The Sustainability Zone saw everything from nanotechnology to drones for making the MRO industry more efficient
T
he Sustainability Zone at MRO Americas is for companies that support investment and planning to tackle today’s issues for a sustainable tomorrow and to showcase their products and services. From water treatment to laser applications and energy management, the companies on the Sustainability Zone were leading examples of how the aviation industry can meet its net-zero goals. The International Air Transport Association
(IATA) 77th Annual General Meeting in October 2021 approved a resolution for the global air transport industry to achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2050. World Kinect Energy Services, a division of World Fuel Services, participated at the Sustainability Zone. “We provide energy solutions for customers worldwide. Sustainability for energy is evolving. how they use energy and offsetting the fuel they do use,” said Esteban Bird, Business Development Director. Such commitments will help aviation align with the Paris Agreement goal of global warming temperature rises not exceeding 1.5°C. This will be an aggressive target for the industry to meet and will cost an estimated $2 trillion. To reduce costs elsewhere, drones are an answer. “We’re working on operational sustainability which makes this a very fitting space for us. It’s a fully
autonomous platform to help augment the workforce, because the industry is facing a contraction of the number of qualified AV technicians, so we want to make sure we’re sustaining the workforce and that we’re also creating a system that is able to have digital records for every aircraft,” said Colby Harvey, Co-founder and CEO of Rizse. Another approach to sustainability is the avoidance of consumables or the more efficient use of a consumable, such as water. “We have a painting hangar and we treat our own water, we treat the residues, this is one thing we do to keep the water clean,” said Debora Lage, Maintenance Engineer, GOL Aerotech. Depainting with lasers is a
“ Our product is water-based. It’s something that we’re looking forward to changing in the industry. It’s safer for the environment. It’s safer for people working around it. way of ending the need to use consumables. “We manufacture industrial grade lasers, mostly for refurbishment, maintenance, paint removal. We’re basically replacing sand and dry ice blasting. The turnaround time is quicker, there are no consumables with ours. It’s a growing industry,” said Brad Runkel, Sales Director, Laser Photonics. The paths to sustainability are many and the ingenuity of industry is ensuring that aviation has a great many opportunities for it to meet the challenge of the environment.

PAVILION: MILITARY
The military pavilion opened up new streams of business for vendors
Maintaining the line Without MRO, military equipment is not going to last and be combat effective
A
t the military pavilion, exhibitors found value not only in being easily accessible to their existing and prospective armed services customers, but also by their presence among a wider commercial audience where potential new opportunities awaited. “On the commercial side we don’t do as much business. So we thought this would be a nice opportunity to still reach out to our military customers and also dip our toes into the commercial market,” said Megan Michelin, Chief Operating Officer J Chadwick Co, a depth measurement and visual inspection solutions provider.
54
In association with the co-located Military Aviation Logistics and Maintenance Symposium, the Military Pavilion was an opportunity to source suppliers, exchange ideas, share best practices and network with military aircraft sustainment and logistics leaders in the Department of Defense and the private sectors. Fluid controls and actuation systems specialist CIRCOR Aerospace & Defense were on the military pavilion for similar reasons. “It gave us a good opportunity for a bit of exposure. This is our first time. It is very interesting, very diverse and actually well attended. We did a couple of shows
recently and none of them have been as well attended,” said Lou Vogt, Senior Director Sales and Business Development, CIRCOR Aerospace & Defense. The huge numbers of people at MRO Americas is a compelling reason for Michelin and J Chadwick Co to return. “Next year we’ll skip the army show and do this show instead. MRO Americas is very clearly focused on the business aspect, and you have a lot more time on the floor here. People are here to do business,” said Michelin. Focusing on the business aspect was also attractive to federal research and development center facilitator Mitre. “For us it was a chance to show a lot of folks what a federally funded research development center actually does, as a lot

of people don’t understand that we’re in it for the research and we look for public private type partnerships that can help research something that private industry or the government can’t do alone. So,
this gives us the opportunity to see a lot of other companies that are out here that maybe are interested in doing that,” said Scott Vandersall, Principal Sustainment Engineer, Mitre.

experts solving the industry’s needs. One airline executive is already convinced by the value of the VIP Club Lounge. “It is really useful because for those meetings that want a calm place where there is going to be some snacks and water, it’s the best. I have decided that this is going to be my meeting place for the next MRO Americas,” said Aerolineas Argentinas

MASI
Anywhere, anytime Wherever the aircraft is, MASI can be there for repair
A
ircraft on ground (AOG) services, meeting the emergency needs of the customer Stateside or elsewhere in the world is a unique skillset MASI brings to the aviation sector. That part failure or inadvertent damage that can ground an aircraft is
60
a costly blunder that requires a highly skilled professional response to get the aircraft back in the air and MASI delivers that. Few companies can rapidly deploy to a location almost anywhere on the planet to repair an aircraft whether it is civilian or military. For AOG, in 12
to 24 hours MASI personnel can be on-site and have the problem fixed. Among the wide range of aircraft types that MASI has served for almost three decades, the Lockheed Martin C-130 and the Boeing 707 are aircraft which MASI has taken special pride and honor in supporting. Both are US Military aircraft which after many decades in service have shown their strength, reliability, maintainability, and support data which makes these aircraft true winners and aircraft which deserve to be kept flying. For the workhorse of the air, the Boeing 707, MASI has repaired the aircraft for military customers, domestically and internationally such as the Israeli Air Force. Whatever component part the military or civilian aircraft has the problem with, whether it is a flap or aileron, of metal or composite composition, MASI personnel have the
deep airframe and composite knowledge and skills to get the job accomplished. It is why MASI is so well known in the industry. MASI’s capabilities span from a simple panel to major control surfaces, nacelles, engine pylons and horizontal and vertical stabilizers. Our key specialty and most well known process and expertise, however, is wire mesh removal and replacement for the V2500-A5, CF680C2 translating sleeve and blocker doors supported by General Electric and Goodrich for the Airbus A320 and Boeing B767, B747 family. It is a key maintenance and repair area of expertise that the firm has practiced domestically and worldwide for many years. This is the range and depth of capabilities that MASI demonstrates on a daily basis to a wide number of customers from the military and civilian sectors which have maintained the company’s reputation for its product reliability and excellence in
the domestic and international markets. Until two years ago, MASI was even carrying out repairs on aircraft in the Russian Federation. In 2021, MASI announced it had moved to its new state of the art repair and overhaul facility,
located in Medley, Florida, USA. The new facility has a bigger, better floor layout for our direct industry and with a special layout for our future expansion into Component Sales, Accessories, APUs and OEM Manufacturing.

TITAN ROBOTICS
When repair is as simple as touching a screen Titan Robotics robots can program themselves
I
ndustrial automation company Titan Robotics provides state-of-the-art flexible intelligent robotic solutions with robots that can program themselves. Users can simply outline on a touchscreen or use augmented reality glasses to point the robot to what needs to be done and the self-programming can begin. The process can also start by simply scanning the object and a digital twin model is then created with this state-of-the-art approach. The user can then pinpoint the
62
work areas on the model and the robot takes care of the rest. One example of Titan Robotics market leading solutions is radome composite repair. A robot is placed in front of the radome which is scanned and a 3D model is created. Areas that deviate from the required geometry are identified and the user simply uses the touch screen to select the areas that need to be rectified. A 3D laser projection of the work to be done can be
overlaid on the radome and then once the self-programming is completed the user can watch the robot mill or sand the radome into the correct geometry. Path planning software that determines how the robot will carry out the operation is another state-ofthe-art solution from Titan Robotics. The software is application agnostic so whether it is drilling, milling, sanding, or even x-ray technology, the scanning, modeling, pathfinding, or 3D laser projection onto work surface activities, all require minimal user involvement.
TITAN ROBOTICS INC
Titan Robotics, Inc. is a spinout from Carnegie Mellon University’s (CMU) National Robotics Engineering Center (NREC) developing flexible robotic systems for manufacturing and industrial applications. Titan Robotics was founded in 2014 to commercialize the award-winning technology developed at NREC for aerospace robotic applications. Today, Titan Robotics team is made of industry experts across robotic systems. Our team works with equipment suppliers to improve designs and push limits to bring proven technologies into new application spaces. The company’s engineering experience includes cutting edge modeling, path planning, machine vision, machine learning, industrial robotics and almost all other areas of advanced robotics.
Easy-to-use controls make Titan Robotics systems a go-to solution
■
Laser depainting an entire aircraft is equally easy with Titan Robotics solutions. Whether the robot system is mobile or fixed on a pedestal or gantry, laser depainting eliminates the need for the abrasive material that has previously been used to remove the paint. With laser depainting the hazardous materials are reduced from tons to less than 50 pounds. The industry expertise at Titan Robotics
Machine learning means that Titan Robotics is always pushing the boundaries
delivers cutting edge machine vision and machine learning to achieve the simplicity of operation for the user. The expertise goes beyond the software too, Titan Robotics’ engineering team is ready to build new solutions when necessary. Whatever the application, Titan Robotics state-of-theart solutions increase productivity and precision with digital twins and selfprogramming for any lean organization.
