Safety Signs Keep People Safe Risks should be controlled so that cleaners, and any other users of buildings, are kept safe and free from danger of injury. SLIPS AND TRIPS Slips and trips remain the single most common cause of major injury in UK workplaces. The process of cleaning has the potential to create many safety hazards, especially for those entering the area being cleaned, including the cleaners themselves. Frequent causes of accidents include freshly cleaned, smooth floors being left damp and slippery, or trailing wires from a vacuum or buffing machine, which can present a trip hazard. An effective cleaning regime requires a good management system to help you identify problem areas, develop and implement strategies for improvement, and evaluate the effectiveness of the changes made. Good communication is also needed at all levels to ensure the right action is taken – e.g. between equipment and chemical suppliers to clarify suitability of a product for the type of contaminant and floor. PREVENTION Constructive training and supervision is essential to ensure cleaning is undertaken to the correct standard. Cleaners need to be fully informed of their duties and the reasons why the cleaning needs to be done in a particular way or at a particular time, as lack of understanding can lead to inappropriate short-cuts. Contamination is implicated in almost all slip accidents, so regular and thorough cleaning to remove contaminants helps to reduce the likelihood of an incident taking place. To help prevent against people slipping on floors that are wet from cleaning, stop pedestrian access by using barriers, locking doors or cleaning in sections. Although signs and cones are not a failsafe preventative method against slips and may be ignored, they are a good way of alerting those nearby of the problem and encouraging caution.

Colour-Coded Cleaning Explained Colour coded cleaning is the process of designating colours to cleaning equipment in certain areas of a venue, reducing the spread of germs across environments and increasing hygiene throughout a business or workplace. The four main colours used to separate out sections – such as public places, washrooms, kitchens and food preparation areas– are red, blue, green and yellow. The practice became widespread in the late 1990s following the British Institute of Cleaning Science’s development of a universal colour code for use in the cleaning industry. The BISC recommends that all materials within a hospital janitorial cupboard should be colour coded, including cloths, mops, buckets, aprons and gloves. Over the years the BISCs has reviewed its guidelines to align with those from organisations such as the National Patient Safety Agency.

WHERE IS COLOUR-CODING USED AND WHO USES IT? The colour coordination of cleaning products has been widely adopted by the catering industry, as well as offices, factories and the retail sector, as a simple way of increasing general hygiene and cleanliness. The colours used can vary from business to business and the system you choose is entirely up to you. Provided that staff are trained on the correct system, the risk of crosscontamination in the workplace is drastically reduced. There are, however, laws and regulations specifically for healthcare establishments that must be followed to ensure patient care. As businesses are now subject to the assessment of an Environmental Health Officer (EHO), the use of colourcoded cleaning equipment is particularly useful. As the role of an EHO is to ensure public health and safety is being upheld, choosing to employ in your workplace a colour system that aims to make cleaning easy and efficient whilst ensuring surroundings are safe, healthy and hygienic, will confirm that standards are being met.

Are You in it for the Long Haul? Delivering more for less is a constant pressure in the cleaning industry, and as such cost-in-use, also known as the real cost, is beginning to play a vital role in supporting business success. When considering material costs, you should reflect on how much product is being consumed and the cost per unit. As an industry, we tend to opt for the lower priced product, which gives us an immediate cost saving. But if we adjust our strategy and look at cost, instead of price, how does this change our decision? Cost in use is the overall expenditure on products, storage, maintenance and labour – it is the sum of our total resource usage. It is a more realistic approach to understanding what our cleaning operations are currently costing and, more importantly, how to reduce costs without compromising quality of service. THE BIG PICTURE The actual cost of cleaning products and materials typically accounts for around 5% of the workplace cleaning budget, with labour being approximately 75%. So although the lower priced products will give an immediate, small reduction in cost, these products may generate the need for additional labour, will need to be replaced more frequently and may not always achieve the required standards. Investing in better cleaning equipment will provide great savings in the long term. In the short term the cleaning products may be slightly costlier, however, innovative, durable, fit for purpose products can provide cost reductions far greater than the initial price saving. For example, some of a business’ biggest savings can be made through reducing the time taken to complete a task. Identifying products that are fit for purpose and perform well, combined with new innovation and best practice, will allow the task to be completed in less time, therefore reducing labour cost. When presented with budget challenges, rather than just trying to reduce costs via short-term price reductions, complete a detailed review of your operations including working practices, products and equipment so that overall efficiency improvements deliver the savings required, whilst maintaining, or even improving, operational performance standards.

9 Reasons You Should be Flat Mopping YOU COULD BE CLEANING TWICE AS FAST An independent study concluded flat mopping cleaned 4,878 square feet per hour, compared to just 2,564 square feet per hour with a 24oz string mop head, nearly doubling efficiency. Combining flat mopping with other suitable equipment, like the LTS Evolve with its ergonomic operating height, can further reduce cleaning time, and require less strain, stress, and effort, compared to conventional mopping.

CLEANERS HAVE A 10LB WEIGHT ATTACHED TO THE END OF THEIR MOP The most common sizes of wet string mops weigh between 16 and 24 ounces; this type of mop can weigh up to three times its dry weight when wet, often making cleaning jobs extremely hard on the wrists, hips, and back. Safety Flooring

Cleaning Safety Flooring Due to the nature of ‘safety’ flooring, conventional mopping will not, on its own, effectively clean the floor. The mop simply deposits dirt into the micro troughs of the surface and edges, which not only leaves the floor looking dirty, but will eventually take away most of the effectiveness of a safety flooring. To effectively clean this type of flooring the use of some form of brushware to reach into the micro troughs is required. This can be achieved using what SYR describe as a heavy duty floor cleaning method - this requires the use of existing mops and buckets, but also a selection of brushes and a floor squeegee. WE SUGGEST THE FOLLOWING PROCESS: Section off an area to be cleaned and put out warning signs. Use the mop and bucket (with cleaning agent) to wet area – do not use the wringer yet as you will need to clean wet. Depending on the size of the area, use the Scrator Brush or Deck Brush (both page 45) to scrub over the wet section, also using the Grout Brush (page 45) if required in tiled areas or where there are 90° angles i.e. floor meeting wall. Wring out the mop and move over the scrubbed area, to take up excess water. Using the Squeegee (page 46), at a comfortable arm’s length, pull across the floor towards you, and tap to take off any excess water. Pass over again, slightly overlapping the previously cleaned area, and repeat until the whole floor area is covered. Squeegee all the water into one area and then mop up the remaining residue. Using this method will not only remove the majority of water from the cleaned area, but will also remove more dirt residue, resulting in a cleaner, drier and safer floor, with hardly any streaks or scuff marks. As this method does take more time than a standard mopping process, it is recommended that it is undertaken a section at a time. If the process seems too long or complex to the cleaning operative, then the risk is that the task will not be completed effectively. A rota could designate duties to ensure that all safety flooring areas, such as corridors and classrooms, are cleaned using this heavy duty method on a regular basis, whilst other methods, like standard mopping or use of the floor machine, be used at all other times. If and where possible, it is effective to use a two person team to save time, with one person mopping floors and the other brushing and squeegeeing. There is no quick and easy fix for cleaning this type of flooring, but by using the methods as described, such surfaces can be effectively cleaned and maintained. Regular maintenance is vital, as the effectiveness of safety floors will be reduced if they are allowed to get into a poor condition.

Wherever you see this symbol it identifies a textile item that is Ecolabel certified The EU Ecolabel is the environmental product label of the European Community. When applied to a product, the EU Ecolabel identifies that it has passed a strict set of environmental compatibility criteria, set out by the European Community. From a regulatory point of view, it is considered a Type I Environmental Label. Based on the ISO 14024 standard, the EU Ecolabel is defined in the National Action Plan of Green Public Procurement (PAN GPP) as a “basic reference” for the evaluation of most environmentally friendly cleaning products, and attaining this label proves that a product has met high environmental standards not only in its production, but throughout its lifecycle.

DEFINED BY THE EUROPEAN COMMUNITY

Often confused with the other Type I Environmental Label of a more national nature (mainly used in other European Community countries), EU Ecolabel is the most known and widespread certification in all of Europe. We decided to certify EU Ecolabel five families of textile products, with a route that has committed the Quality Office for over four years through a complex and demanding process. As a result, our Microrapid Wet-Mop and Vaseline Impregnated Cloth, both perfect for use with the Motion range, are Ecolabel certified. For us, certification is not just a simple label on a product, but the result of a constant modus operandi and a “way of being” that involves the entire company and all its policies.

Wherever possible Motion’s cleaning trollies are certified EPD. The EPD is an environmental declaration with the aims to provide concrete, verified and credible information on the environmental performance of a product or service. From a regulatory point of view, it is defined as a Type III Environmental Label. The EPD examines the entire cycle of life, “from the cradle to the grave”, analysing a product’s environmental impact. We are very proud to have been the first company in the professional cleaning sector, to undertake the EPD certification path of its products, as required by the ISO 14040 standards. All of the Motion trollies are EPD certified, to confirm the high level of environmental compatibility of our production. The only trolley exempt from this certification is the Motion Clean, which instead is Clean Room certified.
