TRIO UPWARD BOUND MATH AND SCIENCE

COMMITMENT: We are committed to you!! We want to make sure that all of your educational goals are accomplished.

AWARENESS: UBMS ensures all students are aware that post-secondary education is an attainable task regardless of your background. The staff provides all eligible students the assistance necessary to recognize and develop their potential in the areas of math and science, and assist the student in the pursuit of a post-secondary education in areas of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM).

WHO ARE WE? Upward Bound Math and Science (UBMS) is a precollege program designed to strengthen the math and science skills of students. The goal of the program is to help participants recognize and develop their potential to excel in math and science; expose them to STEM majors and ultimately careers in the math and science profession.

UPWARD BOUND CONSISTS OF THREE COMPONENTS ACADEMIC COMPONENT:

The Academic Year Component meets for assigned “STEM SATURDAY” sessions from September-May. These sessions provide hands on and exploratory science activities, mathematics class, tutorials, SAT/ACT prep, STAAR Boot Camp, advisement, counseling, several college visits, and STEM related trips. SUMMER COMPONENT:

This is an intensive six-week STEM program that provides integration with university faculty members that do research in mathematics and the sciences. Emphasis is placed on offering expanded opportunities for program participants to prepare for greater depth of studies in STEM fields at the post-secondary level. In addition, students learn computer technology as well as English, foreign language, study skills. Recreational sports and out of town field trips are included. BRIDGE COMPONENT:

Program graduates participate in a “Bridge” Component where they are enrolled in two STEM related college courses during Texas Southern University’s first summer session. Upon completion of the session, they acquired six credit hours giving the graduates a “head start” as they pursue a post-secondary degree in their prospective undergraduate program.
