Sysco Ontario supports independent producers and partnerships with foodservice operators to deliver exceptional fresh, local products handled with the highest quality assurance standards in the industry. To us, local means nourishing individuals with food that travels the shortest distance from ground to table. Local nourishes the community as well as the local economy. Local is food and food products that are grown, raised, caught, harvested, processed and produced in Ontario.

Dairy vendor partners Agropur, Arla Foods and Gay Lea are operated as co-operatives and have member farms across Ontario that they have joined forces with to process & market the milk they produce on their farms and they in turn use to create a range of dairy products including butter and a variety of cheeses.

Butter tarts, the pioneer dessert that first appeared in a cookbook, published in Barrie, 121 years ago, are still beloved here. The inclusion of raisins, walnuts or pecans in this indulgence, however is hotly debated.

The next time you’re dining on baby beets, baby leeks or mini carrots topped with one-inch stems odds are good the produce hails from one of the many Ontario growers that supply Boncheff. The very aptly named Boncheff is the family name of Tom and his brother George, who together have been running Boncheff Herbs for 40 years. But it was their father who started the business many years ago growing ornamental and bedding plants and eventually fresh potted herbs that were sold at the Ontario Food Terminal. Boncheff also sells fresh Ontario-grown herbs such as basil, mint, thyme, oregano and sage to Sysco in Ontario and Atlantic Canada. Weekly, Boncheff distributes as much as 700 pounds of chives and up to 400 pounds each of mint and thyme, among numerous other herbs, to its customers.

Ontario’s Cider Facts Cider is a fermented alcoholic beverage made from apple or pear juice, but can also be flavoured with the juice of other fruits, such as peaches.

Pear cider is often called perry and is traditionally fermented with wild yeasts found on the fruit’s skin. In Ontario, cider usually has a 5-7% alcohol content. Ontario is Canada's largest apple growing region with over 16,000 acres of trees. Ciders can be classified from dry to sweet. Their appearance ranges from cloudy with sediment to completely clear, and their colour ranges from light yellow through orange to brown. Because it is made of fruit, not grain, cider is gluten-free. There are approximately 700 apple growers in Ontario. While some of them manage orchards larger than 100 acres, the average size is about 20 acres. Most apple harvests are still picked by hand.

Sunset is a fourth-generation family-owned produce company, and the first to bring commercial greenhouse growing to North America. As the true greenhouse pioneer, Grandpa Umberto Mastronardi’s vision in the 1940s was to provide people with incredible-tasting, fresh, greenhouse-grown vegetables all year long. They are also one of the first produce companies to introduce product traceability back to the farm. Their produce is identified at the greenhouse with a code indicating the exact farm where it came from, as well as the country of origin. Order Order at at syscosource.ca syscosource.ca
