IS THIS CUP/CONTAINER BEING BANNED?

The best way to think of this ban is not as a plastic ban, but as a FOAM and BLACK plastics ban. This covers about 90% of the banned items.

If your cup/container is clear then you’re in the clear, white is also alright.

Most of our non-black plastics are made of a ‘good’ non-banned plastic. This includes: things like the white lids for coffee cups, portion cups, etc

This rule can also be applied to anything BUT cutlery, bags, and straws. There may be some outliers depending on what vendors decide to do, those will be looked at as they come up.

WHY CAN I STILL BUY THIS BANNED CODE?

The ban currently bans the import and production of any new product.

Most of our non-food vendors have warehouses in Canada with already imported/ produced product. As such, we currently plan to continue to buy the banned codes while supplies last for our customers. Once they run out of stock and we run out of stock, that will be the end of it.

Customers can continue to order and use banned product up until we are depleted or December 20th, 2023.

The only vendor that’s currently affected that ships from the United States is Sabert (see page 6 & 7 for substitution breakdowns). Any banned Sabert codes have been suppressed and our stock on hand of those codes will be the last of it.

WHAT ABOUT CUTLERY?

The biggest news is that NOT ALL PLASTIC CUTLERY WILL BE BANNED.

Environment Canada will put in place certification requirements on certain plastic cutlery. Date on this, still to be determined

In the meantime, Sysco is now accepting vendor letters showing that they’ve done the testing and that their codes meet the criteria set-out by the government. Currently, letters received by Novolex (Polar) and Sanfacon. (found in the appendix, page 28). Products shown below for quick reference.

What this ultimately means is that some plastic cutlery will not be affected by the ban and will continue to be produced, imported, and stocked for Sysco.

This list may grow if we get more letters, but for now these are the approved codes.

You might have noticed that the alternatives are all the same. Unfortunately, there is no good paper replacement for the 6 and 7 oz cups, you'll need to move up to the 8oz when switching over to paper.

There is still stock available on #4922076 in the Toronto Warehouse but it's not expected to last through March #5494960 arriving back in stock in March (please use # 5020094 & #4452589 in the meantime)

Straw Updates

Like cutlery, it’s come out that plastic straws can be exempt from the SUP ban providing they pass certain criteria Stone Straw has provided a list of their straws that passed the testing and the backup testing data. Please see the updated list below accepted by the SUP ban.

Stone Straw claims their product “maintain it’s form through 100 washes in a household dish-washer”, consequently they will be accepted by the ban – for now! *Remember that the exceptions to the regulation we know today, might change down the road, so be prepared you might have to change from “Plastic to Paper”, the safer alternative

Note: Stone Straw's composable line DID NOT pass the test so they are banned.
