Welcome to the 2017 edition of Take the Next Step Sale Well here we go with the 14th edition of Take the Next Step Sale. What a year in agriculture. It saw devastating drought early on in western Canada which resulted in some herds being reduced or sold altogether. Eastern Canada has dealt with relentless rains and flooding. Forest fires have wreaked havoc throughout the prairies and in particular BC and our southern neighbouring states. And now hurricane after hurricane doing untold damage through the Caribbean and the southern U.S. Then we have our illustrious world leaders. Putin. Trump. Kim Jong-un. And the Lost Boy and his band of narrow minded bureaucrats here at home. Wow. Enough of the world affairs. Even with all the turmoil in the Western Hemisphere, life moves forward and so does the need for quality seed stock and good beef. Our Herefords thrive on whatever nature throws at them. The desire to have white faced cattle throughout the country is definitely strong. As in past years, C&T and our contributors - McCoy, KLR, Twin View and Phantom Creek have all selected with functionality in mind in both bred females and heifer calves. Many will become favorite front pasture cows. Be sure to attend as many sales as you can. There are females out there to satisfy every need, from the purebred to the commercial man. Junior members remember your 10% discount on sale day. Agribition is another venue to find some of the best genetics worldwide. The ITC centre will add a whole new dimension to exhibitors and visitors alike. Something to keep in mind is the upcoming 50th Anniversary of Canadian Western Agribition in 2020 and the National Hereford Show with it. While talking to Lance Leachman this summer, he made a very interesting comment.......” So this year’s breeding decisions will be 2020’s senior show cattle”...... Now THAT is something to think about! Time moves quickly. And on to the Riders. I am still holding my position and prediction from last year that the Riders will be Grey Cup champions in 2018. But hold on!! We are surging right now so could it be sooner?? Back to back is ok with me! GO GREEN!! See you sale day Chris

Junior Buyer’s incentive 10% discount to any Junior member purchasing a heifer calf in the sale.

C & T Cattle Company & Guests

From the desk at T Bar...

It is the fourteenth year of “Taking The Next Step” and I am writing this on the heels of three back-to-back blowout wins by the Riders, so it will be very interesting what the prediction will be from the “Saskatchewan Swami.” The one thing I do know is the cattle industry has been a lot more stable than the “Green and White “ and appears to be strengthening as we go into the fall run.

Take The Next Step

Fourteenth Annual Production Sale 5:00 PM Saturday, October 21, 2017 At Right Cross Ranch Sale Barn, Kisbey, SK (5 kms South of Kisbey on HWY 605 and 4 kms West)

“Take the Next Step” over the past fourteen years has been an excellent shopping center for bred females. Hosted by Chris and Tina, these five breeding operations put forward a lineup of replacements that will suit breeding establishments large and small and will fit all types of budgets. With five separate programs, there is diversity in both genetics and phenotype with the majority being hard grass fed cattle. The few heifer calves offered have been selected for their competitive nature and for a front pasture future... whether you are a junior or an overage junior, wanting to keep some of Trudeau’s tax dollars in your own pocket.

Over the past few years, we have found a definite demand for a Polled Hereford bull in an Angus cow herd. The results are simple... a heavier calf at weaning through hybrid vigor, a steer calf that is highly marketable and a money earner in the feedlot; but the bonus is the other half of the calf crop.... replacements that grow into optimal framed, big bodied brood cows, with great temperament, lots of hair and well shaped, well attached udders giving them that extra degree of longevity... what a win-win scenario. On behalf of Chris, Tina and their families; Doug and Wanda Mann at Phantom Creek; the Nicholas families at Mc’Coy; the Twin View folks Marge, Ernie, Ken and Janelle; Randy and Karen from KLR, this is your special invitation to be part of the “Next Step.”

Ross brought us a number of cows this past winter from his Allison partnership. Madison 1E is the first of those born here at C&T and she is quite a standout calf. The 19X cow is a favourite of Ross’s. She’s a speckle faced, big, old, brood matron with an awesome level square udder. This heifer calf is a long spined and clean fronted female already carrying the depth so evident in her momma. You can’t go wrong! Owned with Ross Madsen.

Another top notch calf from Ross’s additions to C&T. Sandra is deep, dark, and oh so fancy. Her dam 82X is a tank. Structurally correct and heavy milking as you can plainly see by the look of her daughter. The cow is sired by an ANL P606 son, so that is self explanatory. The calf is sired Courtney Walker’s good Banker bull. With Global, 29F, Stetson, and Klondike 102K in his pedigree, Sandra is destined to produce great ones! Owned with Ross Madsen.

TM 49.4

Now miss Dahlia here is a little smaller framed but no less eye catching and broody. A nice deep, dark, and short marked heifer. The McCoy 9X cow is super efficient and carries a little different top end in her pedigree. Action needs no long story. We know what he brings to the table! Wonder what little Dahlia will look like this time next year?????? Well take a look at big Dahlia 71D Lot 14 feature female! ‘Nuff said!!!

An April female destined to never leave home.... but plans change. She has three sisters working in herd now, so that’s the only reason she is being offered here. The maternal strength is very deep with the Square D 840R cow. We bought her 11 years ago from Duke’s fall sale and the old girl keeps cranking them out. Whether male or female, they work. Emerald is a jewel! Sweet and feminine with the right amount of pizzazz to catch your eye, the neighbor’s eye, the judge’s eye and there is likely enough left over to catch the banker’s eye! Bred to C&T 7B Double D 11D May 12, 2017. Exposed to Mohican Stroker Z81 from June 3 to August 15, 2017. Preg checked safe to breeding date. Projected calving date February 21, 2018.

Big and stout. Table topped. A ton of capacity. Massive ribbed. Just super easy doing. And look at that udder development!! Babs was headed to Junior Bonanza until Dawson broke his foot! The genetics this heifer carries are second to none. She is flat out good with the guess work taken out of the equation. Just study her pedigree and you will agree. Not sure how we got this one past Carrie but here she is. One of the top females we have raised from one of our top donor cows. 108E is a long bodied, deep sided, easy fleshing and good haired female. She is short marked and fully pigmented. With all the bells and whistles, she is a prime candidate to be a lead off donor cow in the future. The first Skyfall daughters are in production and we look forward to more in 2018.
