Southern Saskatchewan rancher Bryce Weiss has been around the beef business, working with crossbred cattle, his whole life.

As a kid back in the late 1960s his parents were among some of the first who after a trip to France ventured into crossing Hereford cows with a Charolais bull and later crossing Red Angus with Charolais.

Years later Bryce introduced a few Simmental heifers to the farm in the Cypress Hills, about 18 miles southwest of Maple Creek, SK. He became sold on the Simmental and Red Angus cross cowherd and in more recent years he's also brought Charolais genetics back into the operation to produce a very marketable bred heifer carrying a calf that is actually a three-way cross.

And as part of the program at Diamond K Cattle Co., he continues to look at other crossing options, primarily based around Simmental and Red Angus genetics. He admits he isn't afraid to "think outside the box."

That thinking has worked well for Bryce and his wife Dena who have been owner/operators of Diamond K Cattle Co. since 2020. Their commitment to producing quality cattle, including a successful bred replacement heifer marketing program that includes Simmental genetics, earned them the honour of being named the Saskatchewan Simmental Association Commercial Breeder of the Year in 2021.

"The whole beef business is about pounds of beef and dollars," says Bryce who has focused on producing and marketing most of their heifer calves as high-quality bred replacement heifers for 25 years. "The objective is to produce the most pounds of beef in quality animals, as efficiently as possible. It also involves listening to customers and producing quality cattle that work well with their commercial beef operations."

As they just wrapped up their 18th annual bred heifer sale in December — they are part of the Rock Solid Red Heifer Sale held near Piapot — the fact that 80 to 90 per cent of the heifers are bought by repeat customers, is a good indication they are doing something right.

MORE THAN 300 CROSSBRED COWS

The Diamond K Cattle Co. was established by the Weiss family in 1997 as Ken Weiss and his two sons Lance and Bryce amalgamated their three operations into one. Then in 2021, Bryce and Dena took over sole ownership of half of the original ranch. Today they run a herd of 340 head of crossbred cows. Bryce continues to raise crossbred replacement heifers, marketing about 120 head annually through the Rock Solid sale, to commercial beef producers from Alberta through to Ontario.

Going back to the early days, the cowherd consisted of Hereford and Charolais crossbred cows. The bred heifer sales started with the Hereford/Charolais cross heifers bred to horned Hereford bulls. The tan heifer bred Hereford was very popular, but always looking to improve the sale offering, the ranch introduced Red Angus bulls in the early 2000’s. The Red Angus crossed well with the tan female, and they started selling red females bred Red Angus.

IMPRESSED WITH SIMMENTAL

"But I was also watching a neighbour's cross breeding program and they were using Simmental bulls," says Bryce. "They were getting great calf weaning weights and a crossbred cowherd with excellent maternal traits."

In the spring of 2006, Diamond K purchased its first ½ blood Simmental heifers for $1,300 per head — that Bryce says "was a crazy price at that time" — from that neighbour Andy Hofer at Spring Creek Colony.

"Once those five heifers started producing, I knew this was it," says Bryce. "That was the cross we wanted to use in the Diamond K breeding program. We soon bought five Simmental bulls and went at it full bore. Within a span of a few years the ranch was running a full herd of cattle influenced by purebred red Simmental bulls.

The cowherd developed into a Red Angus/Simmental cross, these cows were bred to Simmental bulls. The heifer calves from that breeding program, destined for the replacement heifer program, were bred back to easing calving Red Angus bulls, with that cross resulting in mostly red calves.

"It's been an excellent combination," says Bryce. "The Red Angus and Simmental breeds just compliment each other so well. In some respects, over the years, we've had just about every shade of animal on the ranch, but the Red Angus and Simmental cross works the best."

Then about six years ago, Bryce had one of his "thinking outside the box" moments. Always in contact with customers — other commercial beef producers — asking what would work best for them, he decided to change things up a bit.

"Some of our customers had cross breeding programs targeting 100 per cent production and marketing of terminal cross calves," says Bryce. "Customers would be buying 10 or 15 head of our replacement heifers and getting red calves, while the terminal cross breeding program on their farms was producing tan calves."

So, he did a trial with the replacement heifer-breeding program and the first year bred about 20 of the Diamond K heifers to a Charolais bull.

"The trial worked so we started with 30 head the next year and it just snowballed. Then we went to 40 head and then 50 head. This was obviously what customers were looking for. This year I believe close to 60 per cent of our sale heifers will be bred to Charolais."

Breeding these replacement heifers to a Charolais bull was some of that "outside the box thinking". It was commonly believed that heifers should be bred to an Angus-type heifer bull. "Angus cattle used to be dominant in that market of producing heifer bulls, but not anymore," says Weiss. "Charolais as well as Simmental breeders have done an excellent job of producing their own heifer bulls that sire lower birth weight calves. "he says he has to do the research during bull selection, but lower birth weight bulls are out there.

In fact, his next "outside the box thinking" project is to breed Simmental/ Angus cross replacement heifers to red Simmental bulls. That cross will produce a 3/4 to 7/8 Simmental calf. "We did a few last year, and those calves were phenomenal," says Bryce. "Breeding those crossbred heifers back to Simmental just seems to give their calves a little more pop, a bit more jam. They really perform well. So, we are looking to produce a few more of those."

He's also planning to introduce a Full Blood Simmental bull into the breeding program with solid red cows to produce calves with that Simmental blaze on their face (sometimes known as the money strip). "Personally, I like the look of an animal with a blaze on their face," he says. "And I know there are some other producers who feel the same way. It doesn't change the performance of the animal, but just has a bit more appeal." So, there may be more replacement heifers producing calves with blazes across their faces.

Bryce says he is regularly in touch with past clients to see how replacement heifers have performed. He is careful with the Diamond K culling and breeding program to produce replacement heifers with good temperament, bred to easy-calving bulls that leave the ranch in excellent body condition — sold in December and ready to calve starting in February and March. "We essentially offer a warranty that if there is some problem with the heifer, we will make good on that," says Bryce. He says it doesn't happen very often but if a heifer is a bit skittish or if they are not satisfied with the heifer, he'll provide a refund.

"We feed our cattle a proper ration, so when those heifers are sold, they are in optimum body condition," says Bryce. "So, we suggest to our buyers, don't take them home and start feeding them a lot of grain. They are in good shape already, so they just need to be maintained until they calf. That way they are not going to get over fat and run the risk of calving difficulty."

And speaking of calving difficulty, he says one of the important numbers he's looking for when buying bulls particularly for the heifer breeding program is the bull's gestation period. He says unless a breeder is servicing cows through A.I. they may not know the actual breeding dates and gestation period, but he does his best to select bulls that do have accurate gestation records.

"Simmental cattle have a 285-day gestation period," explains Bryce. "So, if you select a bull that sires calves that are five or 10 days late in gestation that's just setting things up for difficult calving. Every extra day that unborn calf is gaining extra weight. So, I look for those gestation numbers and if possible, I look for bulls that may even be three or four days early. So far there is no EPD for gestation days."

THE ANNUAL PRODUCTION CYCLE

The main cowherd of Diamond K, exposed to a 50-day breeding period, begins calving around April 1. Calving usually wraps up by May 25. Cows begin calving on a quarter section of pasture and then as calves show up the pairs are moved to a larger pasture.

Once everything is calved, they spend the spring, summer and early fall on thousands of acres of mostly native grass pasture, cradled between the east and west blocks of the Cypress Hills.

Calves are weaned between Oct 15 and 30, with steer calves sold private treaty to a nearby feeder, while the heifer calves are moved to custom feedlot where they are fed until about mid-April the following spring.

Replacement heifers are bred at two different times. This year the early group was exposed for 45 days from May 2 to June 17 to produce a February calf. While the other group were exposed for 42 days from June 5 to July 17 to calve starting in March.

After weaning, the cow herd will remain out on pasture, supplemented with feed as needed, with fresh running spring water and good bush cover until about January, when they are brought in close to ranch headquarters and put on total mixed rations (formulated for pre and post calving intervals).

Bryce says the Simmental/Red Angus cross remains the foundation of their beef program, noting there are also some cross breeding combinations tailored to niche markets.

"In 25 years of crossbreeding cattle, the Simmental/Red Angus cross female is the best cow for our operation," he says. "The Simmental bring great hair, sound feet, good disposition and lots of milk. The two breeds compliment each other better than any breeds that have been run on the Diamond K Cattle Co."

Bull Sale Season

Welcome to the January 2023 issue of Commercial Country!

For many of us, flipping the calendar to a new year is like a reset button and a time for new beginnings. Calves are being born in many herds and the waiting game is over to see if the previous year’s mating decisions worked out. Yes, there is a long way to go in the development of that calf, but each trip to the barn is one of wonderment and excitement as the new calves are being born. For most of our commercial customers who aren’t calving yet, it is a time of maintaining the herd and assessing all the bull sale catalogues that will be flooding into their homes. It all leads to decision time as to what bulls to buy and who to source them from.

For many producers, 2022 was a much better year, as many parts of Canada received much needed rains that replenished our feed-yards. This was a huge positive for many producers, however it was unfortunately not the case for all areas, and hopefully we will see everyone blessed this year with good growing conditions. Welcome to the beef business!

The 2022 fall calf run was relatively strong, and although seasonal and traditional pressure was put on prices late in the calf run, prices for heavier weight calves were often better than originally expected. Bred females however finished the year under pressure but provided producers the opportunity to expand their numbers. Despite that opportunity, we can likely expect January 1, 2023 cow inventory numbers to be down from previous years. With that, I expect that will translate into even better calf prices this coming fall!

Early weaning was a benefit as producers got the calves on feed sooner and gave their cows a much needed opportunity to rebuild body condition. Heavy weight Simmental influenced calves brought a premium to their lighter weight counterparts and Simmental cross calves were in higher demand regardless of their gender. As usual, heifers were at a discount but the reputation of the Simmental maternal strength is well known and the discounts were often less. While price per pound premiums for Simmental influence were seen as compared to calves of other breeds, the bigger gain was usually seen in payweight, especially when compared to straight bred British calves. It amazes me how many producers ignore the benefits and economics of cross breeding! It’s

time to let the advantages of heterosis work for you. It’s absolutely free money and you just have to let it happen!

Breed identity, or the crossbred stamp, continues to be an obvious advantage as a “money stripe” or a blaze face on a calf of any colour earns a premium as it indicates some Simmental influence. That combined with a blue Simmental RFID tag back button helps buyers identify Simmental genetics in those calves. It is a great idea to use these blue CSA endorsed back buttons in your marketing efforts and is another benefit that the CSA provides is using registered Simmental bulls in your program. Smart and timely marketing has always added value to a producer’s calves, and it has never been more important than right now. As pressure continues to be placed on all levels of the beef value chain, seed stock producers and breed associations need to be cognizant of their responsibilities. It’s no longer about just selling a bull. It’s about selling the right bull to advance the industry.

The 2023 bull sales are fast approaching, and people will need to upgrade their bull batteries. I am confident that the demand for quality Simmental bulls will again be strong, but let’s not flood the market! There has never been a larger selection of top quality Simmental bulls for sale. Traditional, black, red, polled, horned, power bulls or bulls to breed heifers will be available throughout all regions of Canada. Most will have information available to assist with your selection decision but if it isn’t Canadian Simmental Association provided and endorsed, then ask yourself why as we work diligently at providing that information to our members. Also make sure the animal is registered with the CSA, applied for or pending doesn’t cut it and means absolutely nothing! You need the information provided to you to be as accurate as possible through our programming and not simply a result of some “may contain program” that just wants to sell you a bull.

There has never been a better supply of top-quality Simmental bulls available for sale that can benefit your bottom line, and Simmental breeders are ready to welcome you to their farm or ranch to check out what they have available either through 2023 bull sales or by private treaty!

Breed IMPROVEMENT

The Customer Mindset

I am writing this article, late, while I am at a week-long course working on making our business better. I think our business is already okay, but we need to continually sharpen the knife.

One of the key points (that I hope we focus on already) on the first day was a customer mindset. You might ask yourself, “what does this have to do with genetic improvement?” If we think this through, it should have nearly everything to do with it. I think everyone I have ever met who has seedstock, loves cattle. We are all keenly interested in performance and pedigrees, and like to make breeding decisions. Many of us (not all) love people and visiting, meeting, chatting and working with others. Fulfilment actually arises from serving others or at least breeding cattle that have the potential to serve.

A customer service mindset empowers us to market more than bulls or heifers. By adopting a customer service mindset, we actually are adding value to our cattle and setting our genetic selection goals, but we are also asking “what can we do to help?” That may be targeted genetics, after sale service or other creative ideas to make our customer’s lives better.

An easy and obvious example of a customer focused mindset may be producing heifer bulls. Is it the same thing for a breeding program to have a few light birthweight bulls that are marketed as “heifer bulls” as it is to objectively try to serve that market and breed the best heifer bulls we can in order to better serve our customer that is breeding heifers? Can a heifer bull have more redeeming characteristics than just a “light birthweight”?

Another easy example would be producing terminal type sires. Are we simply selling power bulls that have too much birthweight to use on heifers, or are we objectively trying to breed cattle that service this customer’s needs, including growth, performance and potentially carcass merit? What tools are we using to create an animal that serves this customer?

If we look at the more complex customer needs surrounding maternal cattle, are we simply breeding “better” cattle by some objective, trying to make bigger numbers or are we actively trying to understand their needs and seeking to breed cattle that have the potential to improve our customer’s fertility, reduce feed costs, improve calf survival, control mature size and enhance their bottom line?

These 3 different examples may all be very different bulls. These bulls may all be coming from the same seedstock operation, but the question of whether these bulls exist by chance or by intention is the difference between a self-serving mindset or a customer focused mindset. The focus also helps us to narrow in on what genetic profiles (EPD) we may need to target in our operation.

If you have a bit of time this winter, try sitting down and asking yourself “who is my true customer?” and what do they need? What can help or serve them moving forward? If the answer comes easily, then I might suggest you are not actually engaged in the exercise. This customer focused vision could be a powerful tool for your seedstock business and help to clarify direction and make cattle breeding even more fun.

Vets ADVICE

TUBING A CALF PROPERLY

Tubing a young calf with colostrum, colostrum substitute, electrolytes or for various other reasons it can be a common procedure on today’s cow calf operations. This procedure must be done properly keeping in mind biosecurity and the number one motto, do no harm. This article will outline proper procedures for tubing as well as some treatment parameters and instances where I have seen things go wrong over the years. Hopefully by the end producers will be more confident when you need to do it and will use it in a timely fashion. There are definitely times when tubing a calf in a timely manner will save its life.

Most cow-calf operations will have at least one esophageal feeder around. There are several makes of feeders out there. I prefer the McGrath as it kinks off automatically when hung down and you can administer with one hand while you hold the calf with the other. The bags sometimes don’t seal as well and sometimes need two people to run. Find a make you like, stick with it and replace it when the tube gets damaged and rough from teeth marks. For biosecurity reasons I also like one used only with newborn calves for colostrum and colostrum substitutes and another used for sick or scouring calves and have them marked accordingly. I suggest washing the entire unit with warm water and dip the tube in a gallon of previously mixed “Virkon” disinfectant.

Fill the feeder with product and make sure the line is clamped off, so no product is running when you pass the tube. That is imperative. Using a small amount of water or sterile lubricant on the bulb end in case the esophagus of the calf is dry from dehydration. This will facilitate it sliding in easier. The calf should either be standing or sitting up in sternal. This allows gravity to help the liquid to flow and prevents the possibility of regurgitation. Do not tube the calf when it is laying on its side as regurgitation and aspiration are definite possibilities. When passing the tube, do so gently and the calf should swallow it. If any resistance stop and retry. You can feel for the tube running down the neck and under your finger just left of center. When you feel this, you know you are in the right position and can let the fluid run in. I like to rub the throat area to stimulate swallowing and it keeps the calf occupied. Any sudden throwing their head, kicking, etc. stop the flow right away and make sure the tube has not slid out to any degree. When done kink the tube and pull it out. The kinking does not allow any fluid to run out when withdrawing and makes aspiration of any fluids almost impossible.

Tubing with colostrum you want to make sure to give at least one liter or more. When sucking naturally the calf creates a groove which has the milk flow through the third stomach into the fourth. With tubing this groove is not created and the colostrum flows into the rumen. It takes about 500 ml to fill the rumen and the excess then runs into the abomasum, so volume is important when it comes to feeding a newborn. The liter or more is necessary to get enough into the abomasum to start being absorbed. Ideally with

Last year ended on a very difficult note. The Canadian cattle community lost a tremendous leader, mentor, and friend, with the sudden passing of Reg Schellenberg, President of the Canadian Cattle Association (CCA).

Reg’s leadership and passion for our industry will be missed around the board table and at industry meetings and events. He cared about issues and worked hard for the betterment of our industry. His goal was to leave a vibrant industry for the generations to come. His legacy and contributions will be felt for many years.

I chatted daily with Reg about CCA priorities and life on our home operations. I learned a lot from Reg, his gentle demeanor and strong character are qualities that I looked up to. I never imagined that this is how I would become CCA President. But I share the same passion as Reg for our cattle industry and it is an honour for me to lead an organization with such a strong and rich history. It’s important to me and our entire board that we move forward on the important work that CCA undertakes on behalf of cattle producers across Canada. We will be a strong voice on the issues that matter the most. Our board members and staff are committed to making positive things happen for our industry.

As we move into 2023, there are bright spots for our industry. We are experiencing high calf prices and we have a strong trade position with exports of Canadian beef at record levels for the sixth year in a row. The challenge now is having enough beef to meet the demand. Simply put: the world needs more Canadian beef.

Last November saw the announcement of the Indo-Pacific Strategy, which is good news for the Canadian beef industry. It prioritizes trade and agriculture, and includes key recommendations shared by CCA. The investment in Minister-led trade missions will help facilitate long-term trade and investment opportunities, while the opening of an agricultural office in the region will help prevent and resolve non-tariff barriers proactively and quickly.

The Indo-Pacific region holds the greatest potential for market growth and diversification for our industry, with a growing middle class, GDP, and food consumption. About 20 percent of Canada’s beef exports are destined for the Indo-Pacific market, with the top five markets being Japan, Mainland China, South Korea, Vietnam, and Hong Kong. Diversifying our trade supports the future of our producers. CCA continues to collaborate with the Government in seeking new market opportunities for Canadian beef in the Indo-Pacific region.

The release of the next federal budget is around the corner and with the Winter Session of Parliament set to resume on January 30, 2023, CCA will keep up advocacy efforts on our key budget recommendations which will help ensure growth and innovation in our sector

These recommendations include:

Foot and Mouth Vaccine Bank

For the livestock sector, the threat of Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD) is serious and would have devastating consequences on the Canadian beef industry and our economy. FMD is a highly contagious viral infection of cloven-hoofed animals including cattle, pigs, and sheep. Canada remains FMD-free, but as an industry we cannot be complacent.

An investment by the Government of Canada in a Canadian FMD vaccine bank is a critical component in preventing catastrophic losses to the sector and the broader Canadian economy should FMD occur in our country. The projected annual cost to maintain the vaccine bank is $3.2-$4 million including potency and licensing testing. The potential impact of an FMD outbreak in Canada is estimated at $50 to $60 billion. Together, with our provincial counterparts across the country, we continue to call on the federal government to invest in this critical infrastructure.

Economic Resilience

With cattle farmers and ranchers facing market driven risks and uncertainty due to extreme weather, tools are needed to help mitigate these risks. We have recommended two actions with significant potential to help foster economic resilience in our sector: providing funding to Livestock Price Insurance (LPI) and making amendments to Livestock Tax Deferral (LTD) provision under the Income Tax Act.

LPI allows cattle producers to reduce market downside for their cattle; helping manage uncertainty and risk. This is especially important for our young cattle producers who don’t have equity built up to access loans. With lending institutions recognizing this program, it puts young people in a better position to borrow the money they need to maintain and grow their operations. The program can also be enhanced through Government partnership on the cost sharing of premiums. This would result in higher enrollment levels and would establish program equity with other commodities and our American counterparts. Lastly, we are still pushing to have this program be available to more producers across Canada.

We have also seen our fair share of extreme weather in the last number of years. Having the ability to access the LTD provision gives producers in designated regions who sell part of their breeding herd due to extreme weather the ability to defer a portion of those proceeds to the following year. To increase the impact of the provision, CCA recommends that producers be given the ability to self-elect rather than rely on a geographic determination to access this provision. This would help producers making difficult decisions during urgent times of need. Lastly, we are requesting an amendment to the definition of “breeding animals,” cited in the Act, so it includes all classes of cattle and not just the breeding herd.

SCHOLARSHIP WINNERS

I was first introduced to the Simmental breed when I began dating, my now husband Anthony Wilcox, back in 2009. We are married and have had three children, Emma, Daxson, and Cade. We decided to move back home to rural Manitoba where we built our home on the Wilcox farm. Wilcox Simmentals was where we started and we have now embraced Wilcox Livestock, as we have extended into breeding purebred Speckle Park cattle, as well as increasing our purebred Simmental herd. We are raising our children in the cattle program and our oldest will be in her first year of 4H this year. We currently reside on the farm in Treherne MB where we work both on the farm with our cattle, as well as off in our careers. I work in emergency medicine as a Registered Nurse providing care to our rural population, many of which are our farmers. I grew up in rural Manitoba and attended the University of Manitoba where I graduated with my bachelor’s in nursing degree. I decided to apply to return to school this fall to obtain my master’s degree, where I was accepted at the University of Manitoba. I am working hard to push for positive influences on our health care system and create changes regarding our rural health care. Although I am not in an agricultural- based study, once completed, I intend to bring my advanced education back to rural Manitoba and continue with our progress in the cattle industry.

I am currently in my first year of Ag Management at Olds College in Olds Alberta. I am from Gladmar, Saskatchewan where my family owns and operates LaBatte Simmentals. We run a herd of red, black, and fullblood Simmental as well as a Simmental/Angus cross commercial herd and grain farming operation. Over the years I have become more involved within the breed. I am currently the president of the Saskatchewan Young Simmental Board, and I am Director on the Young Canadian Simmental Association Board. I am very thankful to have had the opportunity to be a part of such an amazing industry and breed. This has really helped shaped me into the young adult I am today. I plan to continue to be involved with the breed and someday be able to give back to the breed what it has given me as an individual. I have also been a member of the Radville 4H Beef Club for the last 8 years, and I enjoy showing cattle at many of the junior shows around our area. I am sincerely thankful for having this opportunity from the Friends of The Canada Simmental foundation and very grateful for everyone who has helped me become the person I am today.

I am 19 years old and completing my final year of Massage therapy in Regina, Saskatchewan with hopes to continue my education and obtain my Doctor of Chiropractic. I am from Grenfell, SK where my family owns and operates McCormack Family Ranch, a purebred Simmental and Angus operation. My involvement in the Simmental breed stemmed from a young age, showing Simmental females in 4-H, fall majors, and YCS provincial and national shows. I am currently the vice president of the SYCSA and look forward to planning this year’s upcoming Tiger Lily Classic show in Weyburn, SK and encourage as many juniors as possible to take part! I am forever thankful for the opportunities that were provided to me through the Simmental breed and agriculture industry. I extend my heartfelt gratitude to the Friends of Canadian Simmental Foundation for awarding me with the Dr. Dixon Memorial Scholarship and hope that I can continue giving back to youth in agriculture the way that the FCSF has done for me!

SCHOLARSHIP WINNERS

I was born and raised in Winkler Manitoba and grew up helping my uncle on his operation, Penner Stock Farms. Through this, I developed a passion for agriculture and veterinary medicine and set out to become a veterinarian. I attended the University of Calgary and obtained a BSc in Biological Sciences before entering veterinary school at the Western College of Veterinary Medicine where I am in my second year. Along the way I started my own fullblood Simmental herd and continue to grow and improve it as I continue school. In the future, I look forward to working alongside many different producers and the opportunity to give back to the industry through my career. I would like to sincerely thank the Friends of Canadian Simmental Foundation for supporting the next generation of beef producers and their contribution to advancing the industry.

THE SIMMENTAL ASSOCIATION OF BRITISH COLUMBIA

PRESIDENT’S WELCOME

After over a decade of inactivity, I am honored to announce that The Simmental Association of British Columbia is reactivated, it has a newly elected Board of Directors and is eagerly accepting new memberships. The Association was reinvigorated in the Fall of 2022, and the Board has been working feverishly since to establish new branding and presence at the fall female sales in the province. In our inaugural meeting the intent was clear – bring a fresh mindset to promoting the Simmental Breed in B.C., and with the Board selecting a dynamic team of self motivated and innovative individuals from across the Province, complemented with varying agricultural and professional backgrounds, I am confident the Simmental Breed is well represented. On behalf of the newly elected Board of Directors, representing Simmentals in BC – Welcome!

Chet Jans

NEWLY ELECTED BOARD OF DIRECTORS

Chet Jans owns and operates Fallen Timber Farms with his wife Jamie and 3 young sons, Taos, Rhett and Nash, in Groundbirch, BC. The Ranch is comprised of 150 Purebred and Fullblood Simmentals. Bulls are marketed each year in Dawson Creek at the Fallen Timber Farms Spring Select Simmental Sale, with females featured at the Ladies of the Peace Sale.

I grew up on the Mitchell Cattle Co. Ranch and bought my first purebred cow at the age of 12. I was once told “show steers will buy your first car, but cows will pay for your education.” I took that to heart, and after ten years in the 4-H program my little cow herd put me through school at Olds College. I have since returned to the ranch, expanded my cow herd and annually contribute bulls to the Best Bet Bull Sale in Williams Lake, BC. I am very excited for the future of our association! We have an excellent group of directors and members that are keen on establishing the Simmental breed further within the province.

We currently run a herd of 70 seed stock purebred Simmental cows and sell bulls & females. Looking forward to working with our new executive.

I’m Joe Loomis, with Polar Farms. Our ranch is located just outside of Dawson Creek, B.C. Along with my wife and 2 daughters, we raise a small herd of 45 purebred Simmental and 150 commercial cattle that we started in 2018.
