Welcome
Welcome to this year’s offering of Speckle Park bulls here at JSF. As we have increased our numbers of purebred cows in the last number of years, one thing still remains the same – quality and consistency. Culling rates are high, as only the highest quality makes the cut in terms of feet, structure, overall body type and temperament. This year’s bulls are a true statement of what we are striving for every year at our place and you will see in our sire groups that they follow the patterns of the sires along with high maternal traits from their mothers as well.

With our involvement in the Speckle Park breed for over 10 years now, we have seen so many opportunities moving forward in both the commercial and purebred industries; yet there are still some skeptics out there and we are showing them year to year that Speckle Park cattle are improving in all aspects at a very rapid rate. In many talks with commercial producers that have been using Speckle Park bulls for many years, each and every one have seen improvements in not only the bulls they have purchased and the quality of their calves, many have seen a dramatic change in their cows as the percentage of Speckle Park increases within their herd. I was told by not just one, but by multiple cattlemen and women, that they can see the feed efficiency grow from year to year. They had seen a savings of 10 lbs/day/cow on winter feed and are able to run more cows on summer grazing without increasing land acres. To me, this is what our industry needs to push, put more dollars in your pocket. The proof is in the pudding. Here at JSF, we try to add as much value to the stats as we can. We strive to follow carcass traits and internal data through Cup ultrasound and Q-Select testing to give our customers the best product we can to increase production in their operation. Please go through the data through the book to better understand the information and trials we are doing here at JSF to better your bottom line. We use our own bulls in our commercial herd so we have a better understanding of what they will do for you, the customer. In saying that, we will have a selection of two year old bulls not in the sale book that we have used on our own operation in these trials for sale as well. Happy New Year from JSF

The Logic Behind Leptin
A compilation of recent research into leptin genetics. Originally published in the Mount Eccles Speckles Dispersal Sale Catalogue
(genotype CT) which put on weight faster than those with the non-mutated forms of leptin (genotype CC).
Testing for leptin is yet another useful tool in beef production to improve carcass merit. The leptin protein is directly related to appetite, energy utilization and fat deposition. According to Jim Tate from Igenity, leptin is a protein produced in white fat tissue which means, “The more fat that gets deposited the more leptin gets released and the stronger the signal is that gets to the brain to reduce appetite.”
Leptin “TT” animals finish for slaughter approximately 37 days faster and had an average daily gain (ADG) of 3.323 pounds compared with “CC” animals that had an ADG of 2.937 pounds. Leptin “TT” animals also exhibit a greater feed efficiency (6.4) compared to “CC” animals (8.2). (Quantum Management Protocol).
The genetics variation for the current leptin test results can be categorised in the following three classifications: 1) Leptin CC is considered normal for most animals. The protein expressed in this form will cause an animal to lose appetite and increase metabolism once desired levels of fat is also commonly associated with better red meat yield and larger ribeye area. 2) Leptin TT is common with animals that exhibit increased marbling and related fat deposit characteristics because the signal to reduce appetite is less recognized by the brain. The animal keeps eating even with sufficient fat deposits and increased levels of leptin. 3) Leptin CT is the heterozygous form and falls somewhere in between in the two extremes. Mitchell writes in his article on ‘Cattle Today’: “Each variation of the gene has its benefit to beef production. Based on the genetic makeup of the cow herd, management decisions can be made to improve the end product depending on the goal of the individual producer.” Marbling “If I know I have red meat yield then a ‘TT’ sire is the obvious choice to improve marbling. All calves sired by a TT bull with exhibit at least one ‘T’ (marbling) allele. A ‘CC’ sire might be the choice if I need to improve red meat yield,” Tate says. “If the goal is to increase both the ribeye area and marbling then the heterozygous (Leptin CT) could provide the answer. There are benefits for all genotypes.” Weight Gain Cattle with the fully mutated form of leptin (genotype TT) put on weight faster than those with the slightly mutated form
Milk Production Prior to research by DeVuyst et al (2008) indicates the leptin gene affects milk production in dairy cows. Dairy cows with at least one copy of the Leptin T allele have been shown to have higher milk production than CC cows. This effect seems to carry over to beef breeds, as research indicated that both crossbred CT and TT beef cows wean significantly heavier beef calves than CC crossbred beef cows. Meat Quality Sheila Schmutz (2013) conducted leptin research at the University of Saskatchewan in Canada. Several cattle trials involving both purebred and crossbred cattle in several feeding situations were conducted. She observed the trend that TT cattle have a much higher chance to carry “AAA” or USA “Choice” grade meat. Future applications of known genotypes may help solve management problems and supply a better product to a specific market. Producers holding this information may be able to better allocate costs and utilize feed resources. “The difference in genotype might mean less days on feed for a Leptin TT to avoid problems with yield grade on a quality grid. Leptin CC cattle might be targeted for a lean grid to maximize profits,” Tate says. “To the cattleman Leptin TT cattle might get by on less energy, while Leptin CC cattle may need extra energy to calve and breed on schedule.” Knowledge is half the battle, according to Tate. By having known genotypes, cattle can become more predictable, but management and sound husbandry will never be left out of the scenario.

Genomics. Simplified. What can these 4 performance traits do for you? By purchasing a Q-Select tested animal you know what genetics you are putting into your herd. If you are a pure-bred, commercial or feedlot producer increasing the amount of TT animals can increase productivity and have a positive impact on your bottom line. Accompanied with PMCH, CRH and IGF2 these combinations pay off not only in your females but also at the sale barn.

Johner Stock Farm Ltd has been happy with the change made to the Co-op Elite Breeder Beef Bull Ration 111 R34 textured feed. Johner’s worked with Kelly Svoboda and Keith LePoudre from the Turtleford and district Co-op along with Erin Stien to ensure the right textured feed for their purebred beef show cattle. They have also incorporated Crystalyx brigrade tack tubs for their weaned calves and UP-30 tubs for the cows. Bigrade tubs have been developed for stressed calves, replacement heifers and cows before breeding, it has extra Selenium and Bioplex organic trace minerals. For more information on these and other feed products please give Kelly a call at 306-845-2222.

Extrusion of our CowPro, enhances the nutritional value through the following:
• Thorough plant cell wall rupture, exposing the carbohydrates and starches providing much improved access to nutrients. • Extrusion deactivates natural anti-nutritional factors, antiflavours and anti-toxins which hinder animal performance.
• Improvement in nutritional digestibility’s. • At high-temperature and short-time processing, the controlled extrusion does not denature the available proteins. • Partial dehydration, resulting in less moisture content and a more concentrated form of nutrients. • A blend of this unique product brings highly-digestible amino acids, increased digestibility’s of the protein and allows the fatty acid profile to be introduced in a bypass form.
