CLA office update With bull sale season underway, the Canadian Limousin Association invites you to visit the Events page on the CLA website www.limousin. com for a listing of upcoming bull sales, and links to catalogues when available. You can also stay up to date with upcoming sales on our Facebook and Twitter pages.
A
new year is upon us and for many producers that means the arrival of a new calf crop! We look forward to the mark that these excellent “E” calves of 2017 are going to make on our breed and the beef industry! We all know the merits of the Limousin breed well. We know that crossbreeding with a Limousin bull will increase your profits. Vigorous calves mean less time spent tending to newborns and more live calves. Increased gain and efficiency means more dollars in your pocket at weaning. The longevity of the Limousin breed also means your investment in a Limousin bull will be worthwhile. We know that our breeders have worked very hard to improve the docility of the Limousin breed. We recognized the need to measure this essential trait and report that measurement to our customers via the docility EPD. If numbers are not for you, I would invite you to visit a Limousin herd or sale this year to see for yourself. The docility of “today’s Limousin” is second to none. In addition, our industry trends show the need for cattle to yield better across the rail. Limousin is the answer.

The Canadian Limousin Association board of directors held a strategic planning session at their December 2016 board meeting. In this meeting the board of directors clearly recognized the paramount importance of the commercial industry to the continued success of the Limousin breed. With that in mind, the CLA looks forward to undertaking a number of endeavours in 2017 to further support our commercial bull buyer, who is the fuel that makes the engine that is the Limousin breed work. We thank you for your continued commitment to the Limousin breed. 2016 was a year of great success for the Limousin breed! To capture a snapshot of the breed in 2016 by the numbers, I have compiled a 2016 Year in Review. We look forward to what 2017 has in store! Genotyping Funding In 2016, your Canadian Limousin Association offered low and high density genotyping to members at a 50% discount. While our allocation for 2016 was used up, we will be receiving a second allocation planned for April 2017. This Canadian Agricultural Adaptation Program (CAAP)
funding has been secured through the Canadian Beef Breeds Council to offset the cost of genotyping for all Canadian beef breed associations. When the 2017 funds become available, all sire and parentage verification requested through the Canadian Limousin Association will be performed on a GGP-LD (low density) 26,000 SNP assay at the same rate ($30) that parentage testing has previously been performed using only the basic 95-120 SNP assay. Members also have the option of choosing to do a GGP-HD (high density, 50,000 SNP assay) at a 50% discount ($50). Additionally, all GGP-LD and GGP-HD will include molecular breeding values (MBVs) which are required in order to generate gEPDs. This is great news for the Limousin breed and members and we look forward to making an official announcement when this discounted rate is available again later in the spring. 2017 CJLA Impact Show and CLA AGM Mark your calendars for the 2017 CJLA Impact Show and CLA Annual General Meeting to be held July 27-30, 2017 in Portage la Prairie, Manitoba! We hope to see you there! Best wishes for successful calving and bull sales! Kindest regards, Tessa Verbeek CLA General Manager
NOUVELLES DU BUREAU DE L’ACL la réponse.
N

CLA PRESIDENT’S REPORT by By Terry Hepper CLA President Another positive for bull sellers were buyers returning to purchase Limousin bulls that hasn’t used a Limousin for a few years and “need to put some muscle into their calves”. As breeders we all need to continue raising cattle with muscle and keep buyers returning to our breed.
T
ime really does fly by. It seems like only a short time ago I was writing last year’s column! A year has flown by and our breed has continued to shine. Last year the bull sales were exceeding lots of people’s expectations and many new breeders were purchasing bulls.
The New Year brings a new set of calves being born and lots of enjoyment watching the new champions develop. The CLA Annual General Meeting and CJLA Impact Show will be held in Portage la Prairie, Manitoba this summer. Keep this in mind when
planning summer vacation time and try to include a stop in Portage la Prairie. At the AGM, members can show support for the breed and its direction moving forward, ask questions of the CLA Board of Directors and staff, and have a chance to be more involved with the breed at a National level. I encourage breeders to get on the board and see what a rewarding experience it can be to be involved at this level. I wish everyone a very successful calving season and another strong year with bull sales.

cjla News We have so much to look forward to in 2017! This year the National Junior Impact Show will be hosted by the Manitoba Junior Limousin Association in Portage la Prairie, Manitoba. The show will be held at the Portage Industrial Exhibition Association from July 27-30. Attending the national show is a highlight for many juniors during their showing years. It’s a great place to meet new friends and become more involved in the Limousin breed. All juniors 21 and under are invited to attend the show as long as they are showing a Limousin, Lim-Flex or Limousin Percentage animal. This year marks the 15th annual National Junior Limousin Conference. The first show was held in 2003 in London, Ontario. The show was organized and run by a group of dedicated parents. At this show the CJLA Board of Directors was elected and held their first meeting. The original board consisted of a representative of each province, excluding Quebec. We are now accepting applications for 1 and 2 year terms on the CJLA board. Elections will take place at the annual general meeting this July at the Impact Show. Interested applicants must answer the following question: How can you help the junior Limousin association be successful? Applications can be submitted to: cjla@limousin.com by July 15, 2017. The CJLA would like to send out a big congratulations to J. Yorga Farms on winning this year’s clothing raffle. Their logo will be featured on the show shirts and wind pants as well as signage for this year’s Impact Show. Thank you to everyone who supported the raffle, took part in organizing ticket sales and to the Manitoba Junior Limousin Association for holding the draw. We look forward to coming together as an association this July in Manitoba. Registrations will open April 1. Please watch the Canadian Limousin website and the Canadian Junior Limousin Association Facebook page for more information. Mark your calendars and plan to attend!

Congratulations to this year’s winning ticket holder J. Yorga Farms. They will be the official sponsor of our show clothing this year.
We are proud to be selected in the 2017 junior clothing draw. Our involvement in the Limousin breed began over 40 years ago, and the future has never been brighter. JYF focuses on docility, fertility and cattle with natural muscle expression (that Limo look!). Commercial producers understand the value that a good Limo bull provides and are making the switch back to cross breeding after years of British breed influence. We plan to continue to grow our bull sale numbers to accommodate this demand and look forward to you joining us the last Monday of Feb (27th this year). We would like to thank the junior board and their advisers for the hard work and dedication to making the events across the country a great success. Join us this summer in Manitoba as the Limousin breed takes another step forward. JYF

canfax market summary
By Brian Perillat Manager / Senior Analyst CanFax
I
n each of the years, 2014, 2015, and 2016, the swing in the value of a fed steer from the annual low price to the annual high was over $700 per head. For calf prices, the swings were not quite as dramatic, but the changes within each year’s high to low still swung calf values $465 (2015) and $680/head (2014). There have been many large and rapid market changes in the past 3 years, and this has left many cattle producers on edge. At the current time, it is somewhat unfortunate that the extreme volatility has overshadowed the positive market situation. The start of 2017 saw calf prices back over $200/cwt, and in some cases feedlots in western Canada are making almost $300/head. Traditionally, this would be considered very strong market conditions, but uncertainty, and the extremely high prices in 2014 and 2015 makes keeping the market in perspective difficult. To start the year, Alberta 550 lb steer prices were over $200/cwt, and while they were about $60/cwt below last year at the time, they are over $30 higher than 2014 and almost $50 higher than 2013. It is a similar story for fed cattle prices, as current prices are still at the third highest level for this time of year. While these price levels do remain historically strong, it is important to remember that from the feedlots’ perspective, they have just been through one of the biggest equity drains they have ever seen, and after about 16 straight months of losses, it will take more than one profitable month to build confidence.
Decreasing calf prices helped lower feedlot break-evens, but feedlot profitability is also very much related to the strong rebound in prices to end 2016. From the early fall lows, fed cattle prices rebounded 23%, and similarly, calf prices increased 17%. These are significant rallies in a short period, no matter what the market conditions. There are several positive factors at play. The stronger US market combined with a weaker Canadian dollar, an abundance of feed grain and forages, as well as record strong basis levels have all added to improved market prices and/or reduced costs. It should also be noted that while western Canadian basis levels have been historically strong, Ontario basis levels had been disappointing at the end of 2016. That said, Ontario basis levels have improved somewhat but remain weaker than the west. Alberta fed cash to cash basis levels have hit record strong levels this winter, with prices premium to the US at times. At the start of January, the basis was +4.15 and the last time the fed basis was positive in January was in 2002. The Canadian dollar can often be the main driver for Canadian prices, and while the Canadian dollar is higher than a year ago, it still remains below the long term average of 80 cents which is considered supportive. Western Canadian barley prices are almost $50/tonne lower than a year ago, and an abundance of feed wheat has also been brought into feeding rations this winter which further improved feedlot margins and the calf market. The market is a long way from the highs seen in 2015, but prices are still relatively strong and creating profit opportunities for cattle producers. On the other hand, broader market trends of increasing meat supplies and uncertain global demand could likely push the market lower through the next couple of years of this cycle. This recent rally is likely not a full trend change in prices, but does point to some stability in the market place. Cost management and risk management will continue to be critical for producers to build and protect profit margins. Future of the Breed Celtic Ridge Farms, Rob & Maryjo Tait by Tessa Verbeek
R
ob and Maryjo Tait grew up with a passion for agriculture, living only miles from each other in southwestern Ontario. The Tait farm was a mixed operation of cattle, cash crop, sheep and pigs however the main focus was on the cow-calf operation and backgrounding cattle. Although they had a variety of different breeds, there was a predominant Limousin influence.
“My Dad always loved the Limousin breed for their performance, their appearance and their docility, this love of the breed was passed on to me,” Rob says, “I wanted to farm, but having an older farm and outdated equipment I realized the need to get an education and secure a good job. Wanting to honour my parents, I decided to become a teacher and farmer.” Rob received Bachelor of Arts Honours from the University of Guelph in History and Geography in 2003 and a Bachelor of Education from Queen’s University in 2004. He then travelled, taught and worked on farms for a year in Australia and New Zealand, before returning home to find a job and take over the farm. “My Dad was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s so the transition to full time

farming was expedited with a steep learning curve, but I was fortunate enough to get a full-time teaching job at my former high school West Elgin Secondary School.” Rob is he Head of History, Social Sciences and Humanities. Outside of work and farming, he is a director with the Elgin Beef Farmers, as well as coaching high school hockey and running a local men’s hockey league at the local arena. Maryjo grew up on a mixed cash crop, turkey and beef farm. Her parents raised purebred Limousin cattle for many years as Armac Livestock Ltd. Her dad grew up showing cattle and passed this onto Maryjo and her siblings. Maryjo showed cattle in 4-H, junior Limousin shows and at the Royal. She was also heavily involved in music with her family through the McWilliam Family Band. After high school, Maryjo also knew that she needed a strong off-farm job. Maryjo attended the University of Guelph and earned a degree in Geography and English. This is where she met Rob and the pair were married in 2009. They have a son, Alexander, 3, and daughter Emily, 6 months. Maryjo is currently on maternity leave from her off-farm job as an Aggregates Inspector with the Ontario Ministry
Raising a young family on the farm, Maryjo says safety is top priority, “It gives us such peace to have quiet cattle, and we believe that comes from handling, and the Limousin breed itself. Our main herd bull is such a well-mannered bull; the proof continues in the replacement heifers and calves.” Maryjo also believes that having peace of mind when working with the cattle is crucial, “We hope our children can grow up with livestock smarts and also appreciate the importance of selecting traits that you know are high-quality to pass on, as we have seen in our Limousin cattle.” The Tait’s started out with a commercial herd that was a mix of Limousin, Charolais, and Angus. As they have grown their venture, they have decided to invest in purebred Limousin bulls and begin to turn their herd over to stronger Limousin traits. Bulls purchased from Bee Zee Acres have fit the

why Limousin - a junior’s point of view
RCN Livestock by Laura Ecklund
Tell us about your operation RCN Livestock is a purebred Limousin operation that started in 2012 and is run by three siblings out of Paradise Hill, Saskatchewan. Ryley, Curtis and Nicole Bielecki were all born and raised in the cattle industry and together have grown a love and passion for farming and cattle. Ryley is currently working as a chiropractic assistant in Saskatoon, Curtis is taking his 3rd Class Power Engineer in Lloydminster and Nicole is in Vermilion taking Animal Health Technology. They have about 40 purebred Limos, alongside their parents’ commercial herd. RCN Livestock strives to raise elite production females that will produce bulls for commercial or purebred use. They strive for consist progeny with desirable beef production
What is it like to be in business with your siblings? Being in business with your siblings is very rewarding. In our younger years, we got along most of the time, but not all the time. But being in business together has brought us a lot closer. – Curtis It has its ups and downs, but when it comes down to the cattle and our decision making, we can all agree upon something and work together. Being in business with my siblings has allowed me to see other perspectives other than just my own and that makes our business stronger as a whole. – Nicole Most people would think that being in business with your siblings would be a constant fight, but it is the one

Masterfeeds beef newsletter FETAL PROGRAMMING by Jason Hurst Beef Technical Sales Masterfeeds
T
he last couple articles have danced around the topic of mineral supplementation saying producers should do it, but what are producers exactly able to achieve by doing this. This article will look into topics around mineral supplementation and run through the effects of certain minerals in a cow herd. First off selenium is always talked about as being an important driver to fertility. For the most part across Canada, selenium is necessary in supplementation programs for improved immunity and fertility. Selenium is well documented to help improve fertility and work as an antioxidant. Certainly low levels of selenium in the cattle and their feeds can reduce the fertility rate in both cows and bulls. In bulls, sperm production and quality is influenced by selenium levels. In cows, the most evident examples of selenium deficiency is the occurrence of retained placentas. It is important to note when it comes to selenium some is good and more isn’t necessarily better. Toxicity of selenium can be an issue, so hitting an optimal level is best. Delivery of 3 mg of selenium per head per day is typically the max that is fed to cattle. Source is getting to become increasing important. Typically producers will use a form of selenium salt, but with producers pushing for better results, a selenium yeast can help to deliver the increased conception rates and health benefits they are looking for. The use of selenium yeast has been well researched and is continually proven in on farm programs. Zinc also gets looked at fairly hard when supplementing trace minerals, and rightfully so. Zinc is important in many different functions in the animal. Skin integrity and hair growth can be influenced by zinc, as well as hoof health and bone growth. Zinc deficiencies typically show up as poor feet and legs on cattle. Supplemental zinc is especially important in our range cattle. If cattle can’t walk they typically don’t last long. This results in cattle not being able to breed back on time or have poor growth and muscle development. Fertility can also be influenced by zinc levels. Deficiencies in zinc levels can lead to a reduction of any one of these functions and as a result leave you with open cows. As a result looking for better ways to deliver zinc into the animal is important. Zinc along with other trace minerals such as copper manganese and cobalt are available in different forms. Oxides, sulfates, and carbonates are typically used as they can be a low cost way of supplying the animal, but at challenging times may not supply the animal with a readily available source of the nutrient. This is where research has pushed into using new, more bioavailable sources of these nutrients. Chelates
40
have been around for a while but recently there has been a greater push on them as producers strive to continually reach for higher reproductive and growth goals. This combined with more challenging environmental factors have pushed this research to be done. Chelation happens when amino acids or short chain peptides are bound to a trace mineral ion. When taken in by the animal the animal’s body essentially views it as a protein source and can more readily break down in the blood of the animal. This is compared to the ‘rock form’ that is typically fed to the animal that tends to have a lower bioavailability. When the trace mineral is chelated it significantly increases its bioavailability. Commercially, this is available to supply; zinc, copper, manganese, cobalt, and iron. Copper is important for many aspects of nutrition as well. Copper plays an important role in the immune system and helps to keep cattle healthy. Skin and hoof health can be affected by status of copper, low levels in the blood of the animal can set up lameness. Also, reproductive cycles and fetal development are influenced by copper levels. Without proper copper levels in the animal reproduction can be impaired and lead to open cows or poor doing animals. Manganese plays a more subtle role in the body compared to the other minerals. However, this does not mean that manganese is not important. Fetal development and growth of calves can be influenced manganese status. Further, if an animal is deficient in manganese reproduction may not occur properly and lead to open cows. Manganese also plays a key role in bone and ligament growth and development. Cobalt often gets overlooked as deficiencies are rarely seen in cattle. That said cobalt is a key component in energy metabolism.
Cobalt is a necessary for the bacteria for the rumen to produce vitamin B12. Low levels in the animal can lead to decreased performance due to how B12 acts in energy metabolism. Supplemental cobalt is a key factor to any mineral program. Those are just some snapshots of what these minerals do; many of them have other functions in the body as well. Delivering trace minerals to cattle will help to improve your bottom line. Balance is important when looking at a mineral supplementation. Above is a mineral wheel to show the interactions. Trace mineral nutrition is very complex; pushing higher rates of one element without considering the impact on the uptake of other trace minerals can lead to deficiencies even with both being supplied. Taking a balanced approach to supplementing is the best option. To get the right balance for your cattle contact your local Masterfeeds representative.
Report Them All to Maximize Value By Joe Epperly, NALF Assistant Executive Director Reprinted with permission from Limousin Today
In order to make informed decisions in a breeding program, a reliable set of data is required. Incomplete reporting of performance information leads to bias in the evaluation and affects the results. The value and integrity of the national cattle evaluation is dependent on the information that is included in it. Total herd reporting program like Limousin Information Management System (LIMS) The LIMS program shows that we are concerned about completeness of data and also that identifying the low end is as important as improving the top end of our product. For example, if we only report the top ½ of our calves, the group that is from the 50 to 75% range in our herd actually appears to be the bottom end. This can be referred to as data bias, or a bias shift. Let’s look at an algebraic analogy: A+B = C If A = 1 and B = 2 we can figure out that the total production of C = 3 1+2=3 If we don’t report A, because it is too small and in the bottom half of the herd. A + B = C is now: ?+2=C If we try to determine the average production in this herd we know that (1+2) / 2 = 1.5 Without reporting A, we can only guess and it is very difficult to accurately determine the genetic merit of either A or B. This is very similar to the concept of total herd reporting.
order to demonstrate the concept of data bias let’s look at a weaning group of calves. In Table 1, the top 4 and bottom 4 calves in a group of 65 head are represented. If a producer reports all 65 of the calves’ weights the average 205 Day weight of the group is 622.3 pounds. By cutting the bottom half calves out of the group and not reporting them the producer has reduced the relative performance of his better calves (shown in the New Index column). For example, calf A drops 7 percent on his ratio. This doesn’t seem like much but it also
drops his interim WW EPD from 84 to 79 and his percentile ranking from top 2% to top 10%. In this example, there are several sires represented. In table 2, we can see the top 8 sires and their respective progeny. If the bottom half of the calves that were removed, we have inadvertently changed the entire rankings of the sires. In the first total CG, Sire E’s progeny have an average index of 107.5 and average progeny EPD is 73.8 and Sire A’s progeny have an average index of 99 and an average progeny EPD of 71.5. By failing to report the bottom calves in the group the average EPDs are now 64.7 (Sire E) and 67.1 (Sire A). We have effectively reversed the appearance of these two sires by failure to report all the data. This concept applies to all aspects of data collection, including calving records. Relative birth weights can also be influenced by incomplete reporting in the same way.
This has negative marketing and selection implications, as indexes are reduced on calves that should appear better. In beef production, fertility is essential to profitability. Without the collection of complete breeding and production and fertility information it is impossible for us to identify those animals that carry optimal genetics. Even a trait as simple as pounds weaned per cow exposed requires knowledge of breeding and production data across the entire herd. For example, if the cow that is 5 years old and has only had 1 calf reported to the dataset. While the odds are good that her other calves may not have been of a quality to register, by failing to report them, we do not know if the dam was open for the first 3 years of her productive life, or simply failed to produce quality calves. As well, collection of disposal information on females and calves may provide the potential to identify genetics for disease resistance, longevity, and other traits of growing importance to profit. If we believe that beef production is a combination of genetic factors interacting with the environment, then it is vital that we collect as much information from all environments as possible. Successful breed improvement programs revolve around the concept of measuring traits that are important, comparing those traits between animals and then selecting the superior animal. Total herd reporting allows us to do this objectively.
Complete reporting does not make your poor cows look bad, but rather incomplete reporting on all calves, discounts your superior females. In 41

a key role in his company’s success. We are looking forward to continuing the event in conjunction with the 2017 CJLA Impact Show and CLA Annual Meeting in Portage la Prairie, Manitoba. While it is common for Limousin sired cattle to top the auction barn sales, the news of these successes does not always get told as well as it could be. With over 3,220 followers on Facebook and 735 followers on Twitter our Association has the daily ability to make these successful sales the talk of our industry. Please forward these exceptional results to the office and we can promote the exceptional value the industry places on Limousin genetics. Tim Andrew CLA Commercial Committee, Chair

Januar y 201
For decades those of us in the commercial cattle industry have taken our feeder cattle to auction markets. When those top end calves are purchased at exceptional prices, we have been told that they are head “East”. The CLA is coordinating a tour to explore the feeding and processing industry in the highest value market in the nation.
Proposed Itinerary Tuesday, January 9 - Fly to Toronto Wednesday, January 10 - Tour St. Helens Packers, one of the largest privately owned beef processing plants in Canada. Specializing in Halal and known for high yield and Certified Angus Beef Production. Thursday, January 11 - Tour OLEX Kitchener/Waterloo, weekly live fat cattle auction where butchers to large processors procure a portion of their needs. Tour Amish/Mennonite farm where the people’s religious beliefs preclude motorized assistance. These operations value the high conversions and returns that Limousin cattle provide. Evening in London. Friday, January 12 - Ontario Cattle Feeders Annual Convention, Best Western Lamplighter Inn, London: Ontario premier cattle feeders have joined together and developed a protocol and market a distinct brand of Ontario Corn Fed Beef that is consistent. The alliance supplies not only a significant portion of the Ontario marketplace but is also exporting to the middle and far East. This is their 20th annual convention where the group hosts speakers who focus on production, human relations, and economics. The evening is highlighted by the “Taste of Ontario” banquet with its exceptional “family” style prime rib banquet and charity auction. Saturday, January 13 - Morning: Wind up breakfast Ontario Cattle Industry Convention. Noon: travel to Mitchell. Tour Chaffe Beef Farms, family owned cattle feeding operation specializing in feeding high end Limousin and Charolais heifers. Tour Legge Beef, Chesley, 5th generation cattle feeding operation specializing in steers sourced primarily from eastern Alberta. Tour Smart Limousin, Meaford, purebred Limousin cow-calf producer featuring both 1850 still in use barn along with modern housing facilities. Sunday, January 14 - Tour Schaus Land and Cattle: touring two state of the art cattle feeding operations owned by Ken and Wally Schause of Elmwood. Touring the Elmwood Buying Station and Alliston lot giving a comprehensive oversight of the Ontario cattle procurement, feeding and feed processing industry. Supper at Charcoal Steak House, Kitchener, one of Ontario’s most celebrated white table cloth restaurants, featuring Norpac product. Monday, January 15 - Morning: Tour Norwich Packers/Norpac, Norwich, family owned cattle processing facility specializing in Limousin harvest. Tour revolutionary induction barn, harvest facility, HACCIP protocol, dry age room, specialized carcass evaluation process as well as animal by product marketing. Tour Norwich finishing barns. Afternoon: Tour Shaw’s Ice Cream, St. Thomas, family owned, CFIA approved, ice cream processing plant specializing in production of high quality ice cream. Return to London, supper on your own. Tuesday, January 16 - Fly home Since the area is so well served by three airports, Toronto, London and Kitchener, there is the option to take in portion of the tour as one would like.

CcA PRESIDENT’S REPORT Secretaries, Undersecretaries and so on in the U.S. Department of Agriculture and other U.S. Federal Departments will be forthcoming. It is this group of political appointees that we are likely to work with most often as the era of the Trump Administration progresses.
Dan Darling Canadian Cattlemen’s Association President
T
he Canadian Cattlemen’s Association (CCA) has been active on a variety of fronts since welcoming in the new year. Producer meeting season in Ontario commenced in January. CCA representatives were happy to attend and present an activity report at several Beef Farmers of Ontario county meetings and the Ontario Cattle Feeders Association meeting. A variety of annual meetings of provincial members and industry stakeholders in the coming months will provide CCA with additional welcome opportunities to touch base with producers. Donald J. Trump was sworn in as the 45th President of the United States (U.S.) on January 20, 2017 with former Georgia governor Sonny Perdue nominated to serve as his Secretary of Agriculture. Details of what the Trump Administration plans to accomplish in its first 100 days remain to be seen, but President Trump will need to address his campaign promises to renegotiate and improve existing trade agreements. The CCA will continue to work closely with Canadian government officials and the Embassy in Washington to ensure the interests of Canadian beef producers are well represented as the Trump Administration and Secretary Perdue move forward. Further appointments for the Deputy
44
The CCA believes that the economic benefits of Canada-U.S. agriculture trade are clear. Canada is the largest export customer for almost all large U.S. agricultural producing states, purchasing around $714 USD per capita of U.S. agricultural products while the U.S. purchases around $69 USD per capita of Canadian agricultural products. Canada is the U.S.’s top customer - purchasing more from the U.S. than China, Japan and the United Kingdom combined - and their closest ally. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has indicated that Canada welcomes a negotiation to update and improve the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA). While the mechanism to do this has yet to be decided, if it should occur, the CCA is prepared for that discussion and seeks to improve the bilateral cattle and beef trade through greater regulatory cooperation. Other trade vehicles mentioned by President Trump during the campaign include the World Trade Organization and the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP). With the U.S. indicating it is withdrawing from the TPP, the CCA has encouraged the Government of Canada to pursue alternate plans, including completion of a Canada-Japan bilateral agreement to ensure Canadian beef producers get the trade access they need. January also saw Prime Minister Trudeau shuffle his cabinet, signaling that he is preparing for the incoming Trump Administration. Most significantly, Chrystia Freeland was appointed Canada’s new Minister of Foreign Affairs. The former Minister of International Trade is retaining a focus on Canada/U.S. Trade policy in her new role with Foreign Affairs, most notably
the responsibility for NAFTA trade policy. The CCA has enjoyed excellent rapport with Minister Freeland and we look forward to continuing to working closely with her in her new role. François-Philippe Champagne was named the new Minister of International Trade. Prior to this appointment, he served as the Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Finance, and has a professional background as a lawyer and international trade specialist. The CCA will work to maintain existing relationships and establish strong working relationships with new Ministers of importance to the beef industry as the Spring session approaches. The CCA places a high priority on relationship building with governments, and industry stakeholders and counterparts domestically and internationally. In January, CCA was part of the Canadian delegation attending the State Agriculture and Rural Leaders (SARL) conference in Baton Rouge, LA. The SARL conference is one of several vehicles CCA has utilized over the years for U.S. agriculture policy discussion and debate. The trip was among a handful of Canada-U.S. relationship - building events CCA attended last month, with meetings at the American Farm Bureau in Phoenix, AZ, a Canada/U.S. Roundtable in Denver, CO, and the National Cattlemen’s Beef Association convention in Nashville, TN. Finally, the CCA’s annual general meeting will be in Ottawa from March 8-10, 2017. The CCA AGM is typically well attended and includes representation from our U.S. industry counterparts and allies. One of the hallmark events of the AGM is the CCA VIP reception, scheduled for the evening of March 8. The CCA reception is always well-received and the guest list includes Senators, Members of Parliament and their staff and other key influencers in Ottawa. I look forward to updating you in my next column.

livestock gentec Bull sale season: What do my customers want? by Dawn Trautman; Director of Knowledge Translation, Livestock Gentec, University of Alberta
I
t’s that time of year again – bull sale season. Producers are out and looking for the next line to add to their bull battery. A successful breeding season doesn’t just happen, but is a result of finding the right fit for the herd. Limousin has much to offer the commercial producer as both a purebred Limousin or as a Lim-Flex® in terms of managing and optimizing crossbreeding in order to capitalize on the benefits of hybrid vigour. For some commercial cattle producers, it seems that crossbreeding has somewhat fallen out of favour, perhaps due to a desire to simplify breeding programs, due to an industry use of coat colour as a proxy of market quality, or the belief that the trade-off of crossbreeding is a lack of consistency. When it comes down to it, crossbreeding, conservatively, has a 25% advantage in terms of lifetime productivity. For commercial producers, where goals include optimizing profits and productivity, not including crossbreeding into their program is like leaving money on the table. Optimizing cross-breeding The greatest benefit of crossbreeding for the commercial producer is to optimize heterosis (aka hybrid vigour), which is the performance advantage of crossbreds over purebred or straightbred parents. It is the difference in value of a trait compared to the average value of the trait in the parents. Heterosis is not necessarily consistent from one breed to the next, as it depends on genetic distance; in other words, it is also possible to optimize heterosis within a single breed, using animals that are genetically distant from one another. One breed cannot excel in all traits. A commercial producer can take advantage of breed complementarity by selecting breeds that complement each other for their crossbreeding program. Continental breeds, including Limousin are highly productive in terms of lean meat, particularly when incorporated into a commercial crossbred program and fed to an endpoint (i.e., a slaughter endpoint). For the Limousin bull buyer this might mean a low to moderate birth weight calf with good feed conversion, good growth rate, excellent lean muscle
yield, and high dressing percentage. An additional option for incorporating breed complementarity for commercial producers is including hybrid bulls such as the Lim-Flex®, which allows producers to optimize heterosis without the additional management worry of including multiple pastures for crossbreeding. On being consistent Crossbreeding can actually add consistency to a breeding program. Commercial producers can design their cow herd so that it fits to their production environment while introducing a terminal sire that fits the market conditions, and then apply this strategy such that it’s manageable over many generations. Considerations for producers to take in adopting this strategy include the number of different breeding groups that can be maintained on the ranch; whether replacement heifers are sourced from the existing herd or purchased externally; the current market standards (for instance, coat colour); and consideration of a trait index (for instance, high weaning weight with high lean meat yield). Don’t forget good genetics! All that being said, heterosis is not the be-all-end-all fix to any breeding program; simply mating cattle that are genetically distant from one another does not guarantee a large bump in average breed effect. The parents will still need to be of quality genetics to benefit from heterosis. The use of EPDs and genomically enhanced EPDs (gEPDs) within a breed (and even across breeds in the near future) should not be abandoned – low quality cattle cannot be improved using heterosis alone. Further, with the availability of gEPDs and genomic profile tools commercial producers can more confidently predict the outcome of their crosses with the additional benefit of increased fertility and heterosis. But is it worth it? Crossbreeding significantly improves lowly heritable traits that are critical to profitability, including milk production, reproductive fitness, and cow lifetime productivity (this is in contrast to some traits that respond better to direct selection, such as certain carcass traits). In the age of the genome and highly sophisticated testing using DNA it can seem trendy to forget the basics. Heterosis is a simple concept to bump
up production and increase profits for the producer; and it is extremely costeffective. The main ‘cost’ to consider largely falls on the side of management, which, to be frank, can have its challenges. A collaborative project with Alberta Agriculture, Livestock Gentec at the University of Alberta, Teagasc (Ireland), and the Canadian Beef Breeds Council, titled ‘Development and deployment of MBVs/gEPDs for feed efficiency and carcass traits that perform in commercial beef cattle’ aims to reduce these challenges. While it is a four-year project, now after one year, the project has successfully predicted breed composition of crossbred cattle using genomics, and subsequently quantified the value of retained heterozygosity (aka the estimate of a hybrid vigour or heterosis score) of commercial crossbred cattle. The idea behind these initial results is that as retained heterozygosity increases the economic value of the animal increases. That is, for increases in retained heterozygosity, a replacement heifer becomes more valuable over her breeding lifetime on the ranch in terms of improved feed efficiency and improved longevity of health traits and in producing a calf each year; an extra value of more than $1,000 per six calvings, at a cost of less than $50/heifer. Stay tuned for future updates on this project. Bringing back the basics to commercial producers A single breed of cattle cannot excel in all areas of production – every breed has strengths and weaknesses relative to an operation’s production goals and environment. An approach of honest accountability of these constraints coupled with an appropriate breeding plan and a well-defined marketing goal will contribute to a sustainable and profitable breeding system at the commercial level. Crossbreeding is an important component in the strength of the Canadian beef industry as we have variable environments and markets. Therefore, these types of plans should be set in motion with specific goals in mind and with a long term commitment. With continued high feed costs, understanding the benefits of a consistent and wellplanned crossbreeding program offers increased sustainability and profitability for the commercial producer, while providing the market with high quality beef. 47

manitoba news Greetings from the Manitoba Limousin Association! Now that Blue Monday is behind us we realize that winter is half-over. Every day now gets us closer to spring. For those who have started to calve, let’s hope this favorable weather continues. December and early January sure were miserable! The Manitoba Limousin Association held their annual meeting on January 3, 2017 in Brandon, MB. I am sure the weather had something to do with the lack of attendance but the board still managed to have a very productive meeting. The board and executive are the same as they were in 2016 with the exception of Darby Cochrane. He has decided to step down due to family obligations. On behalf of the board I would like to thank Darby for all of his support and dedication while serving his many years on the MLA Board.
I would once again like to say Thank You to the sponsors for their support and to the Limousin community for their work to make the National Limousin Show & Sale a success. The big event for the MLA in 2017 is hosting the Canadian Limousin Association Annual Meeting and Canadian Junior Limousin Association Summer Show in Portage La Prairie July 27, 28 and 29, 2017. Your ideas, new concepts and participation would be greatly appreciated as this is a national event. Good luck with calving and bull sales. Bill Campbell President, Manitoba Limousin Association

Ontario news Winter in Ontario has had some extreme temperature fluctuations and variable snow fall. We started out in December with some cold weather and most of Ontario had some significant snowfall. I live in South Western Ontario and between Christmas and New Years we lost the foot of snow we had. After a brief mild spell, cold weather returned once again putting some deep frost into the ground and made for nice winter weather. Warmer weather, I guess the January thaw, came and we had 20 days in the middle of January where we had spring like weather and lots of mud. It is bad enough having it in the spring, so I’m not looking forward to going through two mud seasons this year. Hopefully we will get some colder weather for February to help keep the yards cleaner and the cattle healthier. With the milder weather the feed supply has been stretching out a bit as the cattle are not eating as much as normal. With many parts of Ontario so dry last summer and a limited amount of feed stored, this should help out the feed supply. I would say the feeder cattle have had a tougher time putting on weight with the temperature fluctuations. Cattle prices this winter have continued the strengthening we saw in December, which is good news for our feedlot sector. The feedlot industry needs a few good turns of cattle to be profitable as 2016 was a tough year for them.
Ontario Limousin Breeders are gearing up for bull and heifer open houses and Private Treaty Sales. The OLA will continue to promote the Limousin breed here in Ontario through the Ontario Beef Magazine, Beef Farmers of Ontario Annual Meeting and also our website. Ontario breeders are doing a great job promoting the breed. Limousin sired calves will work great crossing with any and all commercial herds and help give commercial breeders an advantage and good prices when they sell their calves. We seem to have a good market in Ontario and demand for Limousin finished cattle. The OLA will be having our annual meeting at the Nottawasaga Inn in Alliston on Saturday, February 25th. Please come out and be part of the Limousin industry in Ontario. I would like to take this time and thank the OLA board for their dedication and hard work this past year. We have had many successes and will continue to work for the Ontario Limousin enthusiasts. Murray A. Shaw President, Ontario Limousin Association
