From all of us at Mitchell Cattle we welcome you to our 18th Annual Best Bet Bull Sale!

From all of us at Mitchell Cattle we welcome you to our 18th Annual Best Bet Bull Sale!

It is hard to say that it hasn’t been another very good year in the cattle business. Looking back on my notes from last year I had thought the prices were near peaking, but we moved some big bulls to town today and 2400 lb bulls brought $2.60 per pound -$6300 each, I didn’t think I would ever see that day. It is good to see everyone getting paid well in return for their hard work.

With calving season winding down for us and gearing up for our bull sale it gives us a moment to reflect on the 50 plus years in the bull business and a moment to assess our direction and the sires that we are using. We source bulls from across the country searching for functional cattle from productive cow families. We have been “fine tuning” our cowherd to concentrate on soundness, productivity and carcass merit for our meat program. On the maternal side we find it very important to pay attention to udder quality, maternal calving ease and longevity. They are not here because of how highly promoted they are or for what we have paid for them. The bulls are raised in conditions that they will be expected to work in, they travel a very long circuit from May until October up to 50 km from home and 5500 feet in elevation. We will not see many of them for months at a time, the calves grow on forage and mothers’ milk, not creep feed. None of the animals here have had their feet trimmed.

We are very happy with our bull pen this year, we believe that this is the most consistent, sound pen of bulls that we have raised. There are many large sire groups if you are looking to put together an even set of bulls or to assess sire productivity and consistency. There are many calving ease oriented angus heifer bulls, the largest group of red Simmentals that we have raised and the black bulls are strong from end to end, The bulls are not “over finished” – we save that for the meat program – they are fit and ready to go to breed cows. The bulls are a month younger than most other sales and have been on feed from the end of October as opposed to the end of August, all the bulls are grown on a TMR ration to ensure their longevity and soundness. Everyone is involved here, Thompson and Anja have been doing night shifts for calving and Leanna processes calves through the barn, tagging and weighing. I am thankful Leanna has taken on most of the catalogue; she knows every cow and is without sentimental attachment when choosing which ones stay or go. She carries on our thoughts that every cow must take a calf to the range, every year, no exceptions, no free passes.

We are thankful and very much appreciate all our customers and believe that it is extremely important to stand behind our bulls, if there is a problem we appreciate being the first to know. 80% of our bulls sell to repeat customers.

As in the past, we will look after delivering bulls to you, either in your yard or at a convenient spot close to you.

Our thanks to BC Livestock; the crew always does a fantastic job preparing the yards and looking after all our needs in Williams Lake. If you cannot make it to the sale or would like a little more time and information, the bulls will all be available for viewing at home until April the 2nd, and all day on the 4th in Williams Lake; the coffee is always on. If you wish to have someone do the bidding for you, contact us or the sales staff at BC Livestock. They are familiar with the bulls and would be more than happy to assist you with your sight unseen purchase. Again, we will be having the bulls available for online bidding with DLMS, their system is user friendly, and they are always very professional.

It is our pleasure to extend our greetings and invitation to join us for our sale on April the 5th. See you all at the Lake, Ian and Anja, Leanna and Thompson @mitchellcattlecompany

If you can bet on anything, you can bet on Polka 46G, bringing in a tank of a bull calf each fall. 46G and her mother, the dam of Lot 19, come from one of our highest producing cow families tracing back to Boda 196X. 196X herself has had multiple sons sell through the sale and still has 3 direct daughters producing in the herd. Boda 196X daughters and granddaughters have had leadoff bulls in our catalog for years, raising lots 1 and 2 in 2024, lot 4 in 2023, lot 1 in 2022, lot 2 in 2021… they just don’t miss. 60M was the second-heaviest bull at weaning, lots of performance here.

What makes Lot 2 even more special, is that his dam is a “Horizon” sired by the Dillenger 116D bull. Top-of-the-line maternal calving ease on the bottom side of this pedigree, not to mention the Dillenger daughters’ production records, extremely sound feet and legs, and udder quality.

Moderate birthweights from the dam’s side of the pedigree, we absolutely love the mother of this bull. Her dam sent a very good ¾ brother to DK Land & Cattle of Lampman, SK. 211M is masculine, big hipped, full of meat and solid any which way you view him. There is no questioning the udder quality that will result from this bull. 211M’s maternal sister has calved first-cycle and she is a phenotypic copy of their beautiful dam, so much so that we’ve fondly nicknamed them “Copy & Paste”.

Both bulls are Homozyogous Polled by pedigree. Where do I start with lots 4 & 5… their dam is one I hold in extremely high ranking in our cowherd. She’s my ideal “Dillenger 116D” sired female who’s correct and sound on her feet and legs, big bodied, nice fronted and straight topped. Her dam is red pedigree royalty around here, sired by Power Play 102Y and mothered by the dam of Lot 36. Further back we have Reality 6P – the matriarch behind “Back to Reality 77J”’s pedigree, and many, many more – there was a time when I tallied all the females linked back to Reality 6P, the number is outstanding. These bulls are absolutely guaranteed to clean up and perfect udders – will not add milk. They are dark cherry red and have so much muscle and mass, clean herd bull heads, tons of hair. Stellar growth EPDs, 225M ranked #3 of 61 in his contemporary group at weaning and #2 of 28 for yearling weight. Both are above average in 10/13 EPD categories.

Lot 6 is just incredibly useful. He was born bright and thrifty, perfect shape, nice blaze face and dark red coat colour and really bloomed from there. His dam is very hard-working as most of the Eastwood 22E daughters are. He ranked #4 of 61 at weaning, a testament to his dam’s milking ability. He is “in the green” for 11/13 EPD categories. 261M’s granddam is a Dillenger 116D daughter with a stellar udder; I rank the Dillenger females as some of our very best, especially in terms of production and structural integrity.

One can’t go wrong with a cow of Crosby 137W lineage. Good calving ease here being in the top 15% for CE and MCE. 270M is above average in 10/13 EPD categories. He profiles well, having great length of body and a straight top. Very correct in his lines, 270M would sire an excellent pen of steers. Daughters would have very high udder quality, as we’ve appreciated for many generations back through his pedigree.

MAVV Galen 48G Purebred Simmental PG1290640 MJIS 48G 19/1/2019

This bull has been a fantastic breeder, covering groups of 40 plus cows each year we use him. This bull is dark red, full of meat and muscle, long as a freight train and with very correct feet. The only issue we have with him is that he is now too wide to make it down the long chute for semen testing! The ten sons we have catalogued are very much a tribute to Galen’s potency as a sire, just as the last set was, and the one before that. The females retained in the herd are good uddered, sound, easy fleshing and massive ribbed. I think we will see a big influx in bull calves mothered by those cherry red, young brood cows.

We used the full brother, RYM 180L, to this lot on some of our replacements last year and he bred extremely well, with 18 calves born first cycle. He has also calved like an absolute dream, with all calves born unassisted so far! Lot 8 is above average for both calving ease and growth traits, with very good carcass numbers as well. He is mothered by a sweet Horizon female, a Dillenger 116D daughter, and I have absolutely no complaints about these cows other than that I wished we had more of them. The udder quality and soundness across the board is very good, they calve extremely well regardless of what you breed them to and they far out-produce themselves – always bringing home solid calves in the fall. Lot 8 is sure to sire calves that come easy and grow up quick, as well as make for some nice replacement females. He is dark cherry red, has a herd bull skull shape, he’s full of muscle, heavy haired, long as a freight train, has a great top and big hip; nothing about this bull that I don’t like.

The thing about having a herd bull reach 8 years of age is you learn an awful lot about his progeny in that time. The fact that this 8-year-old bull still has excellent feet, and sires broody, balanced, hard-working daughters justifies us using him just one more time! Pretty fortunate with this herd bull is all we can say. Eastwood improves calving ease and maternal traits regardless of what he is bred to. He is moderate and complete, and to no surprise calved extremely well used on heifers with EPD’s in the 1st percentile for CE, BW and MCE. Springcreek Simmentals bought a semen package and used him on heifers and mature cows and the resulting progeny are fantastic. His sons in the Pursuit of Perfection 2021 sale brought as much as $20,000, $18,000 and $16,000. Daughters of Eastwood 22E sold for as much as $20,000 and $16,000 in Springcreek’s dispersal.

We retained her first bull to use on heifers, were very pleased with the results, and she brought a bull calf to town every other year except last – as we retained that one for our own use as well. He is above average for 11/13 EPD categories. Seeing as this bull’s sire and dam have made it to 8 and 10 years of age, both with excellent feet, I’d say the stay-ability EPD is accurate at top 1%.

Homozygous Polled, Non-Dilutor. 264M ranks very near the top on my short-list of pen favourites. The dam of Lot 19 is also the granddam of Lot 1. She crossed very well with Handprint 4H: doubling up on growth, moderating her frame a touch and adding even more softness and fleshing ability – this pedigree stacks a ton of maternal calving ease to boot. While his hybrid dam isn’t recordable, she’s got a great track record here, having multiple daughters retained and sending countless sons through the sale. 236M is one of those extra-rib kinds of long bodied, big middled and with ample muscle and herd bull character.

Homozygous Polled, Non-Dilutor.

Another hybrid bull who has some extra style to burn thanks to his Angus dam. This bull really took off once on feed averaging 4.3 pounds per day from weaning to yearling. He exhibits ample length, smooth muscle shape and lots of cherry red hair. If they’re anything like him, his calves will be born bright and thrifty, ready to put that cross bred vigour to your advantage.

Both females had calves sired by Marlboro Man this year, and I have to say that the genetic full sister to Lot 43 is pretty stellar. Their granddam goes back to Tobasco through our Warrior 33W herd sire, a bull that made his mark here by way of highly fertile, structurally fault free females that were the “herd bull maker” type. This bull is above average or “in the green” for every EPD trait. His yearling weight adjusts to 1500 pounds, ranking him 1st in his contemporary group. Both female and male calves off this bull will be of great value. Females will become some of the best in the cowherd, very typical of the “Zeola” cows that I speak so highly of in many other footnotes in this catalog. I’ve always had a liking for this bull. I took a picture of him the day he was born because he already had shape to his top, was pitch black, had tons of hair, and was bright as a button! The other reason being that he is out of an old favourite: Bling 36Z. There are six other bulls catalogued who trace back to Bling 36Z, one lot who’s out of a sister to her dam, one who’s directly out of a sister, and one out of the daughter of said ‘sister’. We really can’t give all the credit to Bling though – her dam was the one who started it all – Dream 40T. 40T was the result of a flush sired by none other than CNS Dream On. She had many sisters whose bull calves were the highlight of our black Simmental program for years. Bling nearly never gives us male calves, and while we don’t complain at her annual additions to the replacement heifer pen, this lot is a special offering. This isn’t his dams first bull through the sale either, for a little cow she’s produced very well for us.

There is only one black Angus female who resides here, a nice bodied cow who Leanna had the opportunity to win thanks to the Speller family who donates a female annually to the local show. 130D has produced well, she’s brought bull calves to the sale before, and this is one with exceptional performance. A true hybrid, the cross-bred advantage is strong here as 232M ranked near the top of his contemporary group at weaning, and currently still weighs up well amongst the rest of the pen.

When a yearling bull goes out on the range and manages to settle multiple cows it’s a testament to his sound structure, travelling ability, and breeding ability – to keep and DNA sire verify 2 bull calves from Bing 58K means he likely settled a fair number more than just those; we’re excited to use him on a larger selection of cows in a breeding pasture this year. Just to confuse things – we name our cowherd based off of their sire, and if you take a look at this pedigree you’ll see a second “Reality” cow – Reality 257R. You will find Reality 257R as the matriarch behind not only this bull but Lots 25, 53 and 60 as well. How’s that for lining up some cow power. For an end of march calf Lot 64 is performing near the top of the pen, ranking #2 of 60 at weaning and going on to gain nearly 4 pounds per day, putting him at an adjusted yearling weight of 1428. Keep in mind this bull will be barely 12 months old come sale day, there’s no doubt in my mind he would’ve highlighted the front-end black set of bulls had he been the same age.

On the flip side of that, the son we did keep left us some outstanding daughters, and I expect the same of this bull. 7D is an ‘elite’ status dam with 4 calves having an average performance ratio of 106. She has 7 progeny total, and comes from a highly long-lived line of females with her dam Make My Day 5N raising 12 calves, and her granddam having 14. The more you analyze Lot 69 the more you’ll like him, he boasts tremendous length throughout, good scrotal development, ideal hip shape, smooth muscle pattern and a real herd bull character.

VET’S MESSAGE

Mitchell Cattle Co. has invested in the health of their herd of cattle for many years through a comprehensive herd health strategy. Currently all breeding females and bulls receive an annual vaccination prior to the breeding season to protect against all the important reproductive viruses and bacteria including IBR, Type I and II BVD and Leptosprirosis. All calves are vaccinated at branding to provide protection against the important viruses and bacteria causing respiratory and clostridial diseases. Currently calves receive a modified live vaccine against IBR, Type I and II BVD, BRSV, and PI3, as well as a modified live bacterin against shipping fever and a killed bacterin against Histophilus somnus, Blackleg and other clostridial diseases. At weaning all bull and heifer calves receive a booster with the same vaccines and bacterins used at branding. In late fall, all cows, bulls, and weaned calves are treated with a topical endectocide to control internal and external parasites.

All bulls in the sale have passed a thorough breeding soundness exam to evaluate scrotal size and shape, semen motility and morphology, and structural soundness. Through my long-standing veterinary relationship with Mitchell Cattle Co., I also know that you can rest assured that each bull is out of a sound, solid, productive cow. Ian and Anja rigorously select their herd for fertility, sound udders, correct feet and legs, and temperament. These cows go to the mountain with their calf each year and come back in the fall for pregnancy testing. Open and late cows, or cows not meeting Mitchell Cattle Co strict criteria, are culled – no excuses, no exceptions.

As the consulting veterinarian I am very proud to work with Mitchell Cattle Co. If there are any questions regarding the health management program at Mitchell Cattle Co. please contact me.
