Canadian Simmental Breeders are Hosting the World Simmental and Fleckvieh breeders from around the World are expected that youth from other breeds will also join us for the coming to Canada for the 2024 World Simmental Congress from event. July 29 – August 4, 2024! There is already strong interest from the USA, Mexico, Central and The World Simmental Fleckvieh Federation (WSFF) meets South America towards the Congress as well as the UK, Europe, biannually at Congresses which are held in a different country Africa and Australasia. We are confident that this will be an event each time, and in 2024 it will be Canada’s turn to shine as we to remember as well one of the largest ever held in Canada. We again host delegates from the WSFF’s 24 member countries. It are proud of our breed’s history in Canada, and this is our chance has been 18 years since Canada last hosted the WSFF Congress to display how Simmental has become an important part of the and for those who attended the events in 2006 it was a great Canadian beef industry. IMPROVEMENT
By Sean McGrath Breed Improvement Coordinator for the Canadian Simmental Association
What’s in the Toolbox I was recently asked to present at a meeting from the perspective of our own ranch, the why, and how we go about choosing and adopting technology in our operation. One of the key points to our technology selection is that it fits into and moves us toward the mission or long-term vision for our operation. That said we use a very different blend of technology than other ranches and even apply the same technologies in a different way than others. The seedstock production business as a whole follows this pattern and I bet if you examine your own operation, you do some things differently than everyone else. Collectively, I am reasonably certain that if I asked any breeder if they wanted to improve their cattle over the course of their involvement with the Simmental breed, the easy answer would be an emphatic “YES”. If also asked, do you want to develop loyal and happy customers for your seedstock and fulfill their goals, the answer would also be a resounding, “YES”.
and has a higher cash cost, the association has also offered various incentives to help those who want to incorporate objective carcass measures into their vision for their operation. The CSA enables members to collect and use high density DNA tests through Neogen. These tests can inform us about things such as parentage but can also serve to add significant information about the genetic characteristics that each potential animal may carry and pass on to their offspring. This increased information is there to help improve our ability to select animals that move us towards our mission for our operation.
If we pursue this conversation a little more in depth, it is possible that different breeders may actually have different specifics for their goals in terms of where they think emphasis is needed, or what their customers are asking for or require. Each operation does things differently. Operations that use Simmental genetics exist across a huge variety of environments and production systems. Thankfully the Simmental breed also has a tremendous amount of diversity that can meet these varied needs. For example, we have Simmental cattle being used in commercial milk production in Canada all the way through the spectrum of being beef mother cows and terminal sires in nearly every environment in the country, from damp to arid, cold to hot and everything in between.
One of the most important things that CSA does with the data submitted by members is to contribute to the IGS evaluation. IGS represents a cooperative effort to leverage data and research capabilities to provide the most advanced genetic evaluation possible. The result of this process are EPDs which describe various aspects of Simmental genetics and allow breeders to pick the animals that best move them towards their goal. Occasionally I will hear from a breeder comments along the lines of “EPDs don’t work” however upon examination the argument is actually closer to “my vision does not align with the vision of most other breeders” or “I am choosing to use the available tools in a different way”. The science surrounding EPDs is very robust and in fact they are the tool that most accurately describes the additive genetics (the part that can be passed on) of an animal. A specific vision on your farm or ranch may not currently have all of the things that are important to achieving it described as an EPD. Additionally, that vision likely does not require every EPD to be at the very top of the breed.
It is at this point where the Canadian Simmental Association and breed improvement programs fit into the picture. The CSA works hard to promote the attributes of the breed, but it is up to individual breeders to set the direction for their programs. The CSA also provides breed improvement opportunities for members to pursue these directions as they see fit. In essence, the CSA provides a breed improvement toolkit, but each breeder is responsible for their blueprints and how they apply the tools to build the breed.
The CSA does not create the vision for your farm or ranch or the breeding program that results. Through the direction of a member committee and the board of directors, it does endeavour to provide opportunities to assist members to work cooperatively to create tools that help objectively meet individual member goals. The breed is vibrant and diverse and using the tools available, breeders are able to select cattle that move them towards their individual goals and serve their customers needs.
Central to the concept that each breeder wants to breed the best cattle possible and continually and objectively improve, the CSA facilitates data collection through Total Herd Enrolment and performance reporting. This is further aided by performance calculations such as adjusted weights, and within herd ranks and indexes. These items provide an opportunity for breeders who want to collect information to objectively assess fertility, growth and other characteristics in order to improve their cattle. Additionally, for those who feel that carcass is an important part of their program or their customer’s needs the CSA also provides the opportunity to work with ultrasound data. Because this information is more onerous to collect 10 OCTNOV SC Insides 23.indd 10

August started off with me being in three different provinces in one week. Starting off my travels, I flew to Regina to attend the Pile of Bones rodeo. Once I landed in Regina, I headed to Lammle’s to pick out two outfits to help with a give-away during
the rodeo performances. In addition to the rodeo, I helped with an eating contest that was interesting to watch as the competitors had to eat as many mini donuts as possible. Once I was finished in Regina, I made my way back to the airport to catch my early flight back to Alberta just in time for the Strathmore Stampede. The Running of the Bulls was certainly the highlight, along with help celebrate Strathmore Stampede’s 20th anniversary. During my final day, the new Miss Strathmore Stampede queen, Ellen Van Noordenburg, and I did some promotional videos for the rodeo as well as spoke at the volunteer appreciation supper. From there, I headed north to Mackenzie County for the 19th annual La Crete Field of Dreams Rodeo. The name “Field of Dreams” was created because it was once just a crop of golden canola standing on the dirt you see now. A dream became a r e a l i t y , and the rodeo grounds took its place. There were so many kids in La Crete, and it was amazing to be welcomed into such a wonderful community for

Camilla-Nora wants to be Miss Rodeo Canada just like me, and I wanted to start her on her rodeo queen journey by gifting her one of my Montana Silversmiths pieces. She has incredible drive so be sure to watch for Camilla-Nora, Miss Rodeo Canada 2040! During the rodeo I assist with my usual tasks of carrying our nation’s flag alongside chasing out stock and helping with the calf scramble. On Sunday I headed to a pancake breakfast before making my way to Cowboy Church. Before making my way to Cranbrook I made a quick stop at Innisfail Chrysler to get an oil change and to make sure “Stickers” was all ready the weekend. to go for the rest of the month ahead. During my From La Crete, time in Cranbrook I met Hazel, an adorable little my Innisfail Chrysler girl with a dream. way back to southern Alberta for the Lethbridge Pro Rodeo and Whoop-Up Days. Starting off my time here I lead the charge alongside Corb Lund at the parade downtown. Later that afternoon I was honored to be a guest judge for the Miss Siksikaitsitapii Princess pageant. I also participated in the Pow Wow grand entry, and then watched the Pow Wow alongside Alayiah (Calgary Stampede First Nations Princess). I then participated in a guided tour of the beautiful new Agri-Food Hub & Trade Centre building, that just opened two weeks ago with the
Whoop-Up Days being its first major event held in the building. On Sunday I made my way to Okotoks for the final day of rodeo action at the Okotoks Pro Rodeo. Then headed back to British Columbia for the Armstrong IPE & Stampede along with the SMS Equipment Pro Tour Finals. I had so much fun in Armstrong! It was incredible to be a part of such an electric night rodeo. During my time there I helped with their 4-H judging and auction, zucchini races, mini chuckwagons, and other community games. As this month comes to a close, it is so incredible to reflect back on my year so far. With Gratitude,

Five daughters of Ms Moses that have sold at auction have averaged over $10,000. • Four other daughters are donors for major breeders, and their production has been nothing short of amazing! • Trevor Kuntz tells me that every year it seems like their top selling bull is out of a Ms Moses daughter. This year, a Ms Moses daughter produced a bull that sold for $32,500, while others have sold for $36,000 and $22,000. They are getting it done! And it’s only going to get better! • We had 14 calves born this year, so we now have 16 daughters and two sons in our herd. We also planted another seven embryos, on top of that Ms Moses gave us 15 female sexed embryos on her last flush done last month. Jewel, our first daughter of Ms Moses, gave 24 female sexed embryos in her first flush. • Production is strong in these genes. Ms Moses 03X is a breed building, money making machine!

Vets
ADVICE By Roy Lewis, DVM
Reducing Antimicrobial Usage (AMU) on Beef Operations Within their operations, whether purebred or commercial, everyone probably has areas where they are either using antibiotics unnecessarily, using the wrong ones for the problem at hand or, perhaps, there are situations where a lower class antibiotic would get the job done. I know I am changing in my advice as we finely tune where we use antibiotics. Ancillary treatments such as NSAIDs for pain or inflammation are being more commonly used and antimicrobials less. There are reductions that can be made throughout almost all cow-calf operations. I would suggest that any major changes be brought up with or be instituted by your veterinarian. There may be in many instances a savings in antibiotic costs with no negative changes in outcome. We can break most antibiotic usage in the cow calf/purebred sector into the several clinical entities they are used in. Pneumonia, diarrhea, lameness issues, navel infection and miscellaneous conditions round out antibiotic usage on our farms. With pneumonia rarely is it a problem in our cows. Conditions like degenerative lungs or emphysema, or lungworms may require other treatments. Rarely do mature cows get the bacterial pneumonia that we call shipping fever which requires antibiotics for treatment. Different treatments may involve dewormers if lungworms and this is usually a pasture condition. For degenerative lung conditions anti-histamines sometimes, steroid’s etc. may be used but generally these are going to be temporary measures and cattle may be better to be shipped if appropriate. Get the cattle over the crisis the withdrawals recognized, and salvage value realized. This is why cattle that recover from viral pneumonias such as BRSV often have irreversible damaged lungs and don’t do as well from a growth perspective. In an ideal world preventing pneumonic conditions with vaccines, two staged, fence line or as stress free as possible weaning helps prevent pneumonias. Any stresses we can reduce at calving such as crowding keeping calves warm and dry with creep areas helps. Many producers are vaccinating for the specific pneumonias they get on young calves and using respiratory vaccines at an earlier age and employing intranasal vaccines to avoid colostral interference. Always better to prevent disease than treat it. Get samples taken and cultures done to determine both the type of pneumonia and which antibiotics are best suited to treat it with. Using some science should be worth the investment to best get positive results on the next cases you treat . Again, take the temperature as active recent infections should have a fever. If no fever, the calf is either not infected or is very far gone and as I have said is going through a normal temperature on the way to comatose. I have seen very conscientious producers sometimes over treat. The temperature can be a good deciding factor or whether to treat or not. Normal temperature is considered 38.5-39.5C and 39.540.0C is the grey area. Generally, a producer’s intuition is good when treating based on clinical signs, demeanor, alertness etc. but let the temperature give you an objective measure to help your decision.
+
With scours cases your veterinarian will often tell you most are caused by viruses, so antibiotics of any sort — be it pills injectable or oral liquid — really don’t do anything. Scours at 1-3 days of life could very well be caused by e-coli, a bacteria which responds to antibiotics. Scour vaccines have really helped to prevent this cause as well as the viral causes of scours. A dietary, stress diarrhea or diarrhea caused by protozoa such as cryptosporidium require electrolytes first and foremost and in the case of cryptosporidium a specific treatment is necessary, not an antibiotic. Like with pneumonia, diarrhea is all about getting the proper cause and the treatments most commonly will not require antibiotics unless a septicemia or e-coli scours. It is more about prevention through scour vaccines and other management changes or treatment with electrolytes and way-less about antibiotics. Lameness issues have been mentioned in numerous articles. The one lameness that is very responsive to antibiotics is footrot (in cows’ calves and bulls) but only about 20% of lameness issues are footrots. Broken legs, tendon and ligament injuries, down to sprains and strains require pain killers and other products like surgery or casting in the case of a broken leg but seldom antibiotics. Again, a more accurate diagnosis needs to be made. This includes cows or bulls which more commonly may have a sole abscess or a bad crack needing foot trimming and proper foot care or a stifle injury which may be permanent. Either way proper individual care is the answer. True footrot should respond well to antibiotics so if it doesn’t, re-look or have the animal examined as it most likely is something else which may require other cures. A septic arthritis may require a claw amputation depending on severity. For navel infections one must weigh the acuteness of the case as to whether antibiotics will help or simple drainage be established like with an abscess. Many apparent navel infections were treated that are in fact umbilical hernias or the infection is long gone and just the scarred navel stump remains. Metaphylactic antibiotics for things like castration of older calves have or are being replaced by painkillers in the majority of cases. All the above suggestions should definitely be clarified with your herd veterinarian. They will help with the actual diagnosis and explain whether antimicrobials are necessary or not. By using good herd health recommendations such as vaccinations to help prevent or reduce the scours and pneumonia incidences, you should be able to cut down antimicrobial usage. Then selecting the right drug for the right bug so to speak so we are only using antimicrobials when they are necessary will also improve our success rate. Other treatments such as pain killers (NSAID’s) may be more appropriate in many cases. Lots of changes will happen but all these changes are for the good of the industry and the safety and quality of the beef produced. Embrace this change and don’t treat simply because it was the way it was done in the past. It is a rut we all get into.

remain competitive and capture value for breeders, producers and the entire beef production chain. It is for this reason that CBIN is such an important initiative for the Canadian beef industry.
ELEVATING THE IMPORTANCE OF GENETICS IN THE BEEF PRODUCTION Canadian Beef Breeds Council:
CHALLENGING COLLABORATION Historically, the seedstock sector has struggled with unified representation within the beef industry for many reasons, one of which is the considerable amount Sandy Russell Chief Executive Officer of diversity that exists within beef cattle genetics. I have often said that our diversity is our biggest challenge but is also our biggest opportunity. The absence of unified representation at times though has often resulted in the important role that cattle breeders or ‘genetic influencers’ play in beef production not being acknowledged by the entire production chain. It has also led to the seedstock sector not being engaged in some of the critical conversations and decision making that drives the industry forward. The Canadian Beef Breeds Council (CBBC) works hard to represent the interests of our collective membership and support constructive, collaborative conversations between the diverse interests of the seedstock sector to ensure that the collective voice is heard within the entire Canadian beef industry. Whether it is through representation at industry events, active engagement and participation with other national industry organizations or through the Canadian Beef Improvement Network (CBIN), our increased efforts to engage in collaborative efforts has clearly started to capture the attention of some within our industry as more and more organizations are reaching out to connect or engage in advancing the awareness of the value of genetics in beef cattle production and sustainability. Increasingly, CBBC is being invited to participate in critical conversations for our industry and that collective representation for the seedstock sector is absolutely essential as the beef industry faces some of our biggest challenges including declining cow herd numbers, skyrocketing costs and validating sustainable production methods. Whether it is the individual sectors (seedstock, cow/calf, feeder, packer, retailer) or individual breeds, tackling these issues independently is often not as effective and can even be detrimental to consistent communication and achieving solutions. We are more powerful when we work collaboratively. Advancing the utilization of genetic data and innovative technologies within the beef industry is no different. It is something that has been pursued for a very long time by many with minimal success. I believe the only way to accomplish this very difficult goal is collaboratively. That being said, collaboration is not easy. It has been known for some time that the beef industry has lagged other livestock sectors in adopting innovative genetic tools and capturing the full value potential of genetic selection. And while we don’t want to become pork or chicken we do want to fully utilize all the tools that we have to
While I know, and we work hard to promote, the fact that Canadian beef producers offer some of the highest quality beef cattle genetics in the world, other countries are investing and driving genetic improvements in beef cattle at an aggressive pace and are making considerable gains. If we are too busy competing amongst ourselves or become complacent in driving tangible investments in genetic improvement, we will be surpassed by others. Our competition should not be others within the Canadian beef industry… our competition is other countries and other protein options. While some collective efforts across our industry with various partners are underway, we know we have a long way to go. Collaboration is not easy and it does take compromise and cooperation but there is no doubt that we will go much farther as a seedstock sector if we can focus on healthy competition while also collectively driving the ultimate goal of providing top quality genetics to beef producers both domestically and internationally. One example of this important collaboration was this past July when CBBC hosted the Beef Improvement Federation’s Symposium in Calgary. Leading experts in beef cattle genetics and guests from around the world gathered in Calgary to discuss advancements in genetics while seeing the quality of Canada’s diverse beef industry. CBBC will continue to work hard to support collaborative opportunities like this for all our members. The idea of capturing value from data driven genetic selection decisions is no doubt advancing within the industry as many are trying to find the key to unlock this substantial opportunity. We can each choose to work independently and duplicate investments and resources in the ongoing pursuit of this goal or we can work collaboratively to leverage our collective investments and resources. I for one believe that collaboration is the key to cracking this incredibly difficult issue and that breeders and producers should be in the driver’s seat in order to fully reap the benefits. There is no doubt that beef production will continue to evolve and data is the currency that can truly inform decisions to increase value in our production chain. I have heard it said that determining how best to capture that value from genetics can be done by us, can be done with us or will be done for us. I believe it should be done by us collaboratively and CBBC will continue to work on behalf of its members to ensure that occurs. This is why it is so important to be a CBBC member actively engaging in those challenging conversations and working collaboratively to continue to ensure Canadian beef cattle genetics and Canadian beef continues to be sought after and maintains its rightful place as the highest quality, most sustainable product in the world. We invite all our members, cattle breeders and industry stakeholders to engage, be sure your voice is heard and participate in these challenging conversations at our Annual General Meeting in conjunction with Canadian Western Agribition in Regina on Monday, November 20, 2023. Respectfully submitted by,
Sandy Russell Sandy Russel, CEO

Nathan Phinney CCA President
The return of Parliament and fall run are now upon us. The summer months did not see our team at the Canadian Cattle Association (CCA) slow down on the advocacy front. We continued to push on key policy files and activities during Parliament’s summer recess to keep our asks top of mind going into the Fall session. Top of mind is the uncertainty due to adverse weather conditions that continues to plague farmers and ranchers across Canada. CCA is monitoring the situation along with our provincial member associations to better understand the impacts on cattle producers and support needed. Since Minister MacAulay’s return to the agriculture portfolio, we have communicated regularly with him on the on the need for impacted cattle producers to have timely access to the Livestock Tax Deferral (LTD) provision as well as support through AgriRecovery. As I type this, the Government of Saskatchewan has stepped up with their AgriRecovery announcement. I hope by the time this is being read that a finalized AgriRecovery response has rolled out from British Columbia (B.C.) to Manitoba. In late August, Minister MacAulay announced the initial regions eligible for the LTD provision. This announcement was welcome news to producers in B.C., Alberta, Saskatchewan, and Manitoba. We are aware from conversations around our board table and with provincial member associations that some impacted areas were not included in the preliminary list. If your region was not included in the preliminary list and has been impacted by extreme weather conditions, please contact your provincial cattle association to let them know. In turn, CCA will communicate this information to Minister MacAulay’s office to help ensure all impacted producers are eligible. The trade file has been a hot one for most of the summer with our team engaging Parliamentarians and their staff on key priorities. On Bill C-282: An Act to amend the Department of Foreign Affairs, Trade and Development Act (supply management), we continue to emphasize the ramifications this bill could have on our economy and cattle producers with Senators and will carry this message through the fall session. CCA has ramped up advocacy efforts on trade with the United Kingdom (UK), particularly with the announcement of the UK accession into the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP). In early September, CCA in partnership with the National Cattle Feeders’ Association (NCFA) and the Canadian Meat Council (CMC) launched a campaign called “Say No to a Bad Deal” so grassroots producers and industry partners could tell our federal government that Canada needs to delay the UK joining the CPTPP until our barriers into the UK market can be addressed. We are not saying no to trade. We are saying no to a bad deal that puts Canadian farmers and ranchers at an unfair disadvantage. Supporting the UK accession to the CPTPP weakens the agreement as the trade barriers to the UK for Canadian beef and pork have not been addressed. The UK continues to have unfettered access to the Canadian market for their meat products, while Canada is unable to get our high-quality meat products into their market. We are asking for reciprocal access for
Canadian meat into the UK’s market. We are proud of the progressive trading standards and science-based rules established through CPTPP which ensures fair market access for participating countries. We do not think those standards should be set aside for the UK accession. We urge you to stand up for a fair trade deal for Canada by sharing your concerns with your Member of Parliament. Please show your support by visiting SayNoToABadDeal.ca and sending in your letter. What drives much of our motivation to keep pushing on our key policy priorities as a board is the desire to leave a vibrant industry for our next generation of cattle producers. Despite the uncertainty facing cattle producers, I’m very optimistic when we see the caliber of our up-andcoming leaders. This was especially evident during the Canadian Beef Industry Conference (CBIC) in August, where activities throughout the week shone a spotlight on our young leaders who are poised to make a difference in our industry. We saw 24 hopefuls vying for a spot in the next class of the Canadian Cattle Young Leaders (CYL) program through insightful discussions on important industry topics during the Selections process. We also celebrated and congratulated this year’s CYL graduates at the opening reception of the conference. It was great to see so many mentors attend to recognize the dedication, hard work, and potential of their mentees. I’d like to personally thank this year’s mentors for the important role that they play in the success of our leadership program and in the development of our young leaders. The CYL graduation ceremony also saw the unveiling of the Reg Schellenberg Next Generation Legacy Award by the Canadian Cattle Foundation and the Schellenberg family. This award will be presented annually to recognize the exceptional qualities and contributions of a CYL graduate, who embodies the same dedication and leadership for the Canadian beef sector that Reg displayed. The award includes a belt buckle donated by the Schellenberg family ranch, Perrin Ranching 1990 LTD, and a travel bursary to attend the 2024 Saskatchewan Beef Industry Conference. Congratulations to Carling Matejka from Ponoka, Alberta for being named the first recipient of this award. We know that Reg would be so proud of this year’s graduating class. Lastly, it was great to participate in the Canadian Cattle Youth Council annual general meeting (AGM) at CBIC. We appreciate the ideas and perspectives that are brought forward by the Council to policy discussions at our various committee meetings and at the board table. I’d like to acknowledge the invaluable contributions made by Charlene Yungblut (Ontario) during her term as the Council’s President and welcome Scott Gerbrandt (Saskatchewan) who was elected President of the Council at the AGM. Congratulations to the both of you!

SEXED SEMEN: AN
OPPORTUNITY TO CAPTURE MORE
VALUE FOR CATTLE
SPRING VALLEY, Wis., USA [August 1, 2023] — Sexed semen breeding programs for the beef industry have primarily focused on developing genetically superior replacement heifers. Dr. Ken Odde served as Department Head for the Animal Sciences and Industry Department at Kansas State University from 2007 to 2018. Dr. Odde now works full-time on the family ranch in South Dakota and serves as a regional representative for the American Simmental Association.
“Male sexed semen is an opportunity to capture value. The opportunity’s greater when the price spread between steers and heifers is significant,” says Ken Odde, DVM and Ph.D., professor and department head emeritus of the Department of Animal
Breeding with sexed semen can help your bottom line by creating cattle the market demands.
Sciences and Industry at Kansas State University. Since retiring from academia, Odde has focused on creating more profitability for his family’s commercial cow-calf ranch in South Dakota, USA. “About six years ago, I was sitting at the sale barn in Mobridge, South Dakota, and the price spread between steers and heifers just struck me that day,” Odde says. From that “aha moment,” Odde started to pursue what a sexed semen breeding program could look like for his ranch. He shares strategies and protocols to consider for success, including fertility differences between cows and heifers, the use of splittime or fixed-time artificial insemination (AI) and the value of using breeding indicator patches to measure estrus intensity.
The breeding indicator’s surface ink is rubbed off by friction during mounting and reveals an indicator color. When enough color is exposed, the animal is considered ready to breed. 33 OCTNOV SC Insides 23.indd 33

VALUE OF BREEDING FOR MALES Before breeding with sexed semen, Odde looked back at industry trends to see the economic impact of breeding for more males. “We’ve got years of history when most sexed semen was targeted at producing females,” Odde says. “Breeding for males is a shift in thinking, and ultimately it’s driven by how high the price difference is between steers and heifers.”

Odde says the price difference between steers and heifers has been primarily driven by increasing carcass weights and the rising cost of gain.
Feedlot closeout performance data in Kansas (see Figure 2) from August 2017 showed the average cost of gain was $5.66 per cwt higher for heifers versus steers. That year corn was relatively cheap to feed at $3.91 per bushel. In August 2022, the average cost of gain was $12.77 per cwt higher for heifers than for steers when the corn price was $8.69 per bushel. “Steers can be fed to higher weights more efficiently,” Odde adds. “The trend of increasing carcass weights could be a driver of producing more male calves with sexed semen, particularly when feed prices are higher.”
ON-RANCH EXPERIENCE The first set of females to be bred with sexed semen on Odde’s ranch used maternal female sexed semen on heifers (see Table 1) and predominantly utilized terminal male sexed semen on cows (see Table 2). Following an estrus synchronization protocol, heifers were bred by visual heat detection using ESTROTECT Breeding Indicator patches to aid in estrus detection during five days of monitoring. The heifers’ AI pregnancy rate was 63.4%. 34 OCTNOV SC Insides 23.indd 34

In the first year, cows were bred using multiple protocols. With fixed-time AI, cow reproduction rates were 40.9%. Two cow groups were bred using split-time AI at 70 hours post prostaglandin injection for cows with activated ESTROTECT patches. If patches weren’t activated, insemination happened at 90 hours with an injection of GnRH. The split-time groups had pregnancy rates of 45% and 47%. Table 2: A.I. BREEDING PROTOCOL
“We think with split-time AI, we were able to pick up a few more cows running them through a second time,” Odde relates. “However, it is pretty labor intensive, so we’ve moved towards more fixed-time AI with the cows.” In the third year of research, male sexed semen was used across all the heifers and cows. “We have learned we get better fertility on our yearling heifers than on mature cows,” Odde says. “We can easily produce more bull calves from our heifers, so that’s something we want to evaluate further.”

WORDS OF ADVICE If you are considering breeding with sexed semen, Odde has a few tips. Odde suggests using a protocol that helps make chute-side breeding decisions based on estrus intensity via a breeding indicator patch. If half of the patch or more is rubbed off, females are good candidates to be bred with sexed semen. Should less than half of the patch surface ink be rubbed off, it’s best to use less expensive conventional semen to help manage costs of your genetics investment. Keeping an eye on market trends is another management practice to consider. “You need an understanding of the economic dynamics,” Odde says. For some herds, it may work better to develop more replacement heifers via sexed semen and marketing those replacements to terminal-focused operations, particularly when replacement females are in demand. “It could be that male sexed semen works well in some situations, and a few years later, it may not have the same incentive,” Odde adds. “When there is a good price difference between steers and heifers, it can really work well.” Odde presented his on-ranch research findings during the Beef Improvement Federation Annual Symposium in Calgary, Alberta, Canada, on July 3. For more information on breeding indicator patches, visit ESTROTECT.com. The ESTROTECT Breeding Indicator is the industry standard for optimizing cattle breeding efficiency and economics. With millions and millions of units sold around the world, ESTROTECT is the only breeding management tool tested in a multitude of university studies by researchers.
Some breeding indicators have easy-to-read bullseyes (black surface ink) on them. Once the bullseye, or the equivalent surface area, is rubbed off the animal – that animal is ready to breed and is up to three times more likely to result in a confirmed pregnancy.

Congratulationse!
ANNOUNCEMENTS On Saturday, June 24th, Kevin Wheale of Rimbey, AB and Courtney Wolfe of Valleyview, AB tied the knot. They fell in love after having their eyes on the same bull at a sale. Kevin’s family has been using predominantly Simmental bulls in their commercial herd for approximately 25 years and Courtney raises Fleckvieh with her dad. Courtney is the oldest daughter of Tony Wolfe (Wolfe Farms), and granddaughter of John and Sue Wolfe (Jack Pine Simmentals). Kevin and Courtney plan to start their own herd of registered Fleckvieh Simmental.
Tiffany Peters of Peters Simmentals and Kris Gordon of Percyview Farms were married on June 30, 2023 in Perdue, SK.

ANNOUNCEMENTS JOIN US IN WISHING THE BEST AS WE BID FAREWELL TO TWO OF OUR STAFF MEMBERS THIS MONTH Dallas Wise joined Canadian Simmental Association 14 years ago in conjunction with the Canadian Limousin Association, the past 3 ½ years have been solely with CSA. As a part of the registry/member service group she has been that voice on the end of the phone assisting many of our members. She will be missed for her cheery disposition and calming mannerism. Hopefully she will get to spend more time doing the things she loves, working with the cattle, riding her horses, spending time with family & friends. We wish her nothing but the best going forward, she will be missed.
Rae Erickson joined the Canadian Simmental Association in 2016, moving over from Alberta 4-H. Over the years Rae has been not only the administrator for the Foundation but has assisted with registry duties as well as assisting in the marketing department. She will be missed for her smile and sense of humor. We wish Rae all the best in the future as she spends time on her photography, farming, cattle, horses and most importantly her beautiful daughter Payson Jayd.
