keep the fly population under control from summer to fall. We recommend using the 30/30 formula that will prevent flies from multiplying, therefore successfully breaking their life cycle. How does this formula work? 30 days before emergence: Feed minerals with the IGR fly control 30 days before the last spring frost. This 30 day window at the beginning of spring is critical because temperatures can fluctuate to levels that cause flies to emerge. Horn flies emerge in the spring when the average daily temperatures reach 18°C. 30 days after the first frost: Continue to supplement cattle with minerals containing IGR throughout the summer and 30 days after the autumn frost. Exposing horn fly larvae to IGR can reduce the number of overwintering pupae. You can have an aggressive fly control strategy in spring and summer, but you will also need that strength in the fall. Horn flies spend the winter at the pupa stage, which can get off to a good start as an adult population in the spring. Using the mineral control with IGR in the fall reduces the opportunity for flies to winter in the soil and reduces the large fly population the following spring.

Canadian Angus Association Honours Doug Haughton of Haughton Bros., Jim Round of KBJ Round Farms and Gary Slezina for 50 Years of Membership June 9, 2018: for immediate release Comox, BC - During the Canadian Angus Association Annual National Convention banquet, three members were honoured for 50 consecutive years of membership in the Association: Doug Haughton of Haughton Ranch in Knutsford, British Columbia; Clyde, Alberta’s Jim Round of KBJ Round Farms and Gary Slezina of Lethbridge, Alberta. Doug Haughton is a third-generation 4-H member and the owner of Haughton Ranch, located on the hills of Knutsford, British Columbia close to his hometown of Kamloops. Haughton was involved with 4-H as a boy and continues to donate his time to the cattle breeding, showing and judging community. He is known for experimenting with different strategies to market his cattle, including spaying, not implanting some animals, expanding into the bred heifer market, and finishing his cattle on wine. Aside from cattle, Haughton has also pursued the farm machinery business. After graduating from college, he took a job in Kamloops at the local John Deere dealership selling farm equipment. “John Deere Doug” has been reputable and acclaimed by customers for over 30 years. The Round family officially entered the Angus scene when they purchased their first Angus heifer in 1964, joining the Canadian Angus Association a few years later. Jim has served the Angus community as a member of the Board of Directors for the Northern Angus Alberta Club, as president of the Alberta Angus Association in 1987, and as CAA president from 1995 to 1996. Jim and his partners Ken and Barry have sold cattle worldwide to Japan, Mexico, the United Kingdom, and Australia; recently, they had one of their Red females win Reserve Champion at Chihuahua, Mexico. Gary Slezina joined CAA as a Junior member in an Angus family. In 1959, seven purebred Angus heifers were born near Coaldale, Alberta. Frank Slezina, who had recently immigrated from Czechoslovakia, bought these seven heifers and created what would become an essential pillar beneath the foundation of Canadian Angus genetics. Most notably, in 1971 six females from the Southolm herd were purchased at the Toronto Royal by Scottish breeder John Graham, who then imported them to Scotland. These females became the first of the Canadian Angus breed to be imported back to their country of origin. The Canadian Angus Association offers sincere congratulations to Doug Haughton of Haughton Ranch, Jim Round of KBJ Round Farms and Gary Slezina. It is because of the dedication of individuals and families like theirs that the agriculture industry continues to be an important sector in our nation today. The Canadian Angus Association instituted a long-term recognition award program in 1998, to honour individuals and families that have demonstrated a long-term commitment to the Angus breed in Canada by maintaining a continuous membership in the Association for at least 50 years. In 2011, the award program expanded to recognize families with 75 and 100 continuous years of membership. The Canadian Angus Association is Canada’s largest purebred beef breed organization. The Association represents more than 2,000 members across Canada for the purposes of registering and recording the pedigrees of purebred Angus cattle in the closed Herdbook and promoting the breed across Canada. The member-approved mandate is to maintain breed registry, breed purity and provide services that enhance the growth and position of the Angus breed. Canadian Angus Foundation Presents Junior Angus Stockman Award to Wade Olynyk July 26, 2018: for immediate release Rocky View County, AB - When he was only a few months old, Wade Olynyk began riding on the quad with his gido (grandfather) or his father while they fed cattle. He has continued to be involved with cattle, and now he has been presented with the Canadian Angus Foundation’s Junior Stockman Award. Whenever he wasn’t in school, Olynyk spent time helping on his family’s purebred Angus operation, Crescent Creek Angus near Goodeve, Saskatchewan. Olynyk would help harvest, wean cattle and prepare for winter. In high school, he used his spare class periods to leave school early and oversee cattle feeding and help with bedding and calving. While other friends found summer jobs that offered them off-farm experience, Olynyk remained on the farm saying, “I don’t want to spend my time on anything else”. In 2015, an accident left Olynyk’s father, Wes, unable to walk for three months. The accident happened weeks before the annual bull sale, thrusting Olynyk into the role of head herdsman and marketer. Olynyk stepped into his father’s role, showing the cattle to producers, speaking with them about genetics and helping to set up the penning system. Olynyk currently maintains his own herd of 20 purebred Angus cattle. He hopes to build it through artificial insemination and embryo transplant. He has recently purchased his own land for grain and pasture use. In addition to his cattle, Olynyk is a director on the Canadian Junior Angus and Saskatchewan Junior Angus Association boards. He has just completed his animal science diploma at Lakeland College and intends to become a 4-H leader with the Goodeve 4-H Club. The Junior Angus Stockman of the Year Award is an initiative of the Canadian Angus Foundation. This award was introduced in 2014 to recognize those outstanding young cattlemen who are constantly growing their stockmanship capability by actively working with their Angus cattle. Olynyk received the award at the Canadian Junior Angus Showdown. Showdown is an annual summer cattle show organized by Canadian Junior Angus. It began on the whim of a teenager, fifty years ago.

The shift paid off for everyone.

Dyce Bolduc, determined to carve his own path in the beef business, purchased three Angus females at a local auction. It seemed like the type of move a naive cattleman would make, buying a breed that was unpopular and likely not profitable at the time.

“By continuing to focus on this and changing the makeup of their own cow herd, they created one of the most economically sustainable and industry-leading carcass herds in Canada,” says Rob Smith, Canadian Angus Association CEO.

But Dyce and David Bolduc saw what few others could - potential.

Their vision and determination to produce genetics that perform both for their commercial customers and on consumer’s plates earned them CAB’s 2018 Canadian Commitment to Excellence Award. The inaugural honor was presented at the Canadian Angus Convention, June 9, in Comox, Vancouver Island, British Columbia.

The brothers, who together operate under the name Cudlobe Angus, run a cow herd of 500 outside of Staveley, Alberta. From the beginning, they’ve done things differently but their instincts have been spot on. After successful show careers that brought home banners from majors across the U.S. and Canada, the brothers took a different approach to evaluating their livestock. They noticed a divide between what won for the judge and what worked on the ranch; and turned to data to reveal winners and losers.

When the Canadian Beef Grading System adjusted to account for quality grade in the early 1990s, the Bolduc brothers embraced the change, determined to search out carcass genetics and prioritize them in their herd. Their focus narrowed even further, as they adjusted to create Angus cattle that could capture carcass premiums by targeting the Certified Angus Beef® brand (CAB®). “We’ve been fortunate enough to have a set of cattle that have met all the demands that we’ve asked from them,” Dyce says. “That goal has changed over fifty years, and so each time we’ve demanded that of these cattle, they’ve hit the mark as we’ve varied the target.”

our industry, for every segment and generates demand at that final consumer level,” David says. The siblings use strict selection criteria and as technology evolves, they lean in to the change. They select for high marbling bulls, use ultrasound data, DNA evaluate all bulls with the Zoetis i50K test and collect carcass data on their own and customers’ fed cattle. The tools are their strategy, the data their map forward. Tracking customer cattle performance is key. They encourage commercial partners to collect the data and

take the time to explain the cutout sheets. A 2018 group of 180 Cudlobe-sired feeder cattle graded 99% AAA or better, with 73% qualifying for CAB including 26% Prime. It’s proof their system is working and the foresight they had so many years ago was right, but the knowledge alone isn’t what the brothers hang their hats on. They want to see each customer also capture the added value. In addition to their annual bull sale, they also host a Cudlobe feeder calf sale. Customers can market Cudlobe-sired calves through the video auction, where they have consistently brought $50 to $90 above market price. “David and Dyce have played a significant role in uniting and creating an environment of cooperation and collaboration within our industry,” says Canadian Angus leader Smith. “They have proven that they have an ability to capture a premium on their genetics through application of advanced technologies and dedication to their commercial customers, who benefit from their management and share in the rewards of their work.” Paying it forward isn’t just a part of their business model. New Canadian Angus Association Board Members and Executive Announced at Annual General Meeting June 9, 2018: for immediate release Comox, BC - The Canadian Angus Association is pleased to announce the new 2018-2019 board executive selected during the Canadian Angus National Convention in Comox, BC. Trevor Welch of Glassville, NB was elevated from the position of President Elect to President. Brett Wildman of Sangudo, AB moved into the Past President position and Bob Hahn was chosen as President Elect. Welch is the fourth generation of his family to farm on their land. Garvie Mountain Angus is located in western New Brunswick in the small community of Glassville. He, his father Fred Welch and son Taylor Welch currently run around 30 mother cows, made up of purebred Black Angus and Black Baldie commercial cows. With a growing land base, they plan to increase their herd to 50 cows within the next two years. Welch is a professional engineer and a licensed New Brunswick Land Surveyor by profession and is the owner of Welch Surveys Ltd. Wildman, elected in 2014, is the third member of his family to serve on the Canadian Angus Association Board of Directors executive. Brett’s father David was President in 1990 and his brother Kirk was President in 2010. Brett Wildman owns and operates Wildman Livestock with his wife Traci and their daughter Paige in Sangudo, AB. He was raised in a purebred Angus operation and has worked as a herdsman and semen collector. Bob Hahn was elected to the Canadian Angus Association Board of Directors in 2013 and was elected to a second term in 2016. He has operated HR Hahn Cattle Co. in Sherwood Park, AB since 2000. Prior to joining the Canadian Angus Association board, Hahn served on the Alberta Angus Association Board of Directors from 2008 through 2012. Hahn is also a chartered accountant with his own practice, Hahn & Houle Chartered Accountants. In addition to the new executive, Tom deWaal was elected in the province of British Columbia to replace retiring director Lorraine Sanford; Brian Geis was elected in the province of Alberta to replace retiring director and Past President David Sibbald; Mike Howe and Sheldon Kyle were elected in the province of Saskatchewan to replace retiring directors David Johnson and Tracey Willms. Tom deWaal of Prince George, BC was raised on a dairy farm. He attended the Reich World Wide College of Auctioneering in Mason City, Iowa and started his auctioneering career selling livestock. In 2003, he purchased his first registered Angus cattle which have grown into today’s Harvest Angus herd consisting of 120 mother cows. Tom and his wife Carolyn also run Central Interior Auctions Ltd. and Tom is serving as president of the BC Angus Association. Sanford and her husband Alan operate Nine Mile Ranch near Quesnel, BC. They purchased the ranch in 1986 from Alan’s parents and have replaced the dairy and Hereford herd with Angus and Simmental cattle. In 2001, Lorraine and Alan purchased a set of Red Angus females from Leachman Cattle Co. out of Montana. Those females became the foundation of their 80-head purebred Angus herd. Geis was raised on a dairy farm in Barrhead, AB. His father artificially inseminated the dairy heifers to Angus bulls which comprised the commercial herd. He got into the purebred cattle business by purchasing purebred Angus cattle for 4-H. After growing the herd to more than 400 cows, Brian and his wife Kim dispersed their herd in 2012 but their son Robert is growing the herd once again. Sibbald, his wife Mary Beth and sons Dylan and Adam operate SSS Red Angus which was established in 1972. Sibbald is a fifth-generation rancher and is also the President and Chairman of the Board of the Calgary Stampede and a Director on the board of the Canadian Beef Breeds Council. Sibbald was elected to the Board in 2013. Howe, his wife Lisa and their twin sons Mason and Grady run a mixed family farming operation with his father and brother south of Moose Jaw. They currently run 320 Red Angus, Charolais and a few commercial cows. Howe has served on the Agribition Prospect Steer and Heifer show committee, as well as the Canadian Red Angus Promotional Society and Saskatchewan Angus Association boards of directors. Kyle operates Kenray Ranch near Redvers, SK with his family. They breed 250 head of Red Angus and Red Angus influenced females annually. Kyle also owns and operates an on-farm business, Kyle Farm & Ranch Supply that was founded in the spring of 2015. In addition, he has served on the local Co-op board of directors for two terms, sat on the Canadian Western Agribition Stock Exchange Committee and was a director on the Saskatchewan Angus Association where he has recently been elected president. Johnson, his wife Anne and their oldest son Andrew and his wife Laurie farm just north of Peebles, SK with Andrew and Laurie’s four children. Johnson Livestock has been a family-owned cattle farm since 1905. Johnson has also served as a director on the Saskatchewan Angus Association board and has served on the local Co-op board. Willms and her husband Bryan own and operate Wilbar Cattle Co. near Dundurn, SK. Wilbar has been raising registered Angus seedstock since 1963, making their children the fourth generation. Cats and Dogs Shorty was trailering his horse to a distant part of the range early one morning, when he noticed a shiny, white pick up in the rear-view mirror. It struck him as a little odd, given that it was early and that the truck was towing a shiny stock trailer. Shorty figured that maybe one of the neighbors had splurged and bought a new ride for both he and his stock. Shorty pulled off the highway onto the road leading to his destination and was a little surprised that the truck followed him to the locked gate. Shorty got out, opened the gate and turned back towards his truck. He looked up in time to see a lanky young man walking towards him. “Hey Shorty.” The young man stopped and extended his right arm. Shorty recognized the man as Dave Allison, the head of the local RCMP Livestock Investigation Branch, in fact he was the head and only member of that section. That explained the shiny new equipment. “Hey Dave,” Shorty shook Dave’s hand. “What the hell are you doing out here this early in the morning?” “In-laws are in town,” Dave’s reply was straight faced and Shorty was unsure if Dave was kidding or dead serious. “You ridin’ today?” “I am,” Shorty replied. “Need help? Really, my in-laws are in town, all day!” “Sure, it will take all day though…” Dave was already on his way back to his truck. The two men pulled their respective rigs inside the pasture. Shorty opened the rear door of his trailer on

his way back to lock the gate and when he returned his horse had stepped out and was eating grass. Dave was still dragging his horse out of his trailer. Shorty took the reins from his saddle horn, tightened his cinch and opened the passenger door of his pick up. He reached into the cab, removed his 30-30 and slipped into the scabbard on the right side of his saddle. “That loaded?” Dave was looking at the rifle. “Not much good to me if it ain’t.” Shorty swung into the saddle to wait for Dave. Dave had removed the jacket he was wearing in favor of a more tattered one and in doing so he revealed his sidearm in a shoulder holster. “That loaded?” Shorty said with a smirk. “Ain’t much good to me either way,” Dave replied and the two men and Shorty’s dog left the trucks for the task ahead. Shorty wasn’t sure quite what to expect with his volunteer government help, but it turned out he was pretty good. The two men had the sixty or so pairs gathered up and headed in the right direction within a couple of hours. As they rode along an old logging road, the two men chatted about cows and cowboys, about police work and about family, not so much about in-laws. They had climbed a fair bit over the past couple of hours and Shorty was busy watching his dog, Mike. Mike was doing his job, but he was intent on something behind him. “I’ll be right back Dave,” Shorty said over his shoulder

as he rode off into the bush on the left side of the road. “C’mon Mike.” Dave nodded at Shorty and carried on after the cows. He wasn’t too worried about why he was suddenly alone, Shorty would be back…wouldn’t he? It was just then that it happened. Now Dave was an experienced member of the Queen’s Horseman, he grew up on a ranch in northern BC and he knew what a rifle shot sounded like, he just didn’t expect one now, or here for that matter. His first instinct was to reach for his sidearm, his second to get the hell off the horse before the horse accomplished that for him. As his mount spun around Dave caught a glimpse of a yellowish-brown animal disappear into the bush behind where he had been. Dave hit the ground and sought cover. That was when the second shot rang out. Dave jerked his head to his right and caught sight of Shorty on a ridge above and behind where he was last seen. Shorty was putting the 30-30 back into the scabbard. “Jesus Shorty…what the hell was that all about?” Shorty emerged from the brush and rode towards Dave, who was trying to put his weapon away. “Cat” said Shorty. “You mean a cougar?” “Nope a barn cat Dave. Of course, a cougar.” “How in hell did you know he was there?” “Mike told me.” Dave looked over at Mike. He was sitting in the middle of the road, licking his nuts. He hadn’t heard Mike say a word. “Honestly Shorty? Look at him, he’s not that smart.” “Easy there Dave, if it weren’t for him your butt might

be being processed into cougar poop about now.” “Fair enough. Sorry Mike.” “Mike hates cats,” Shorty began. “He was watching behind us for the last couple miles and had his hackles up. He never gets that worked up about bears or coyotes, I have only seen that once when we came across a cougar a couple of years ago, so I figured we might have one following us.” “Well thanks for letting me know Shorty. We could have been killed…or worse.” “Yeah or worse yet I would have had to watch you blast away with your sidearm.” “Oh…I don’t want to do that. Do you know how much paper I would have to fill out? You would have to provide written statements…” “I didn’t see nothing,” Shorty replied, “I was eating a peanut butter sandwich at the time.” Dave grinned, he liked this guy. The two cowboys and Mike gathered the scattered herd back up and headed back up the road. “So, Shorty, did you hit him?” “Nope,” Shorty replied. “But I did hit exactly what I was aiming at.” “What was that?” “The road between him and you. The second shot was just to keep him running.” “You should have hit him.” “Do you know how much paper we would have to fill out if we got him? Jesus we would be writing for a week.” “We?” Dave looked over at his partner. “I didn’t see nothing, I was eatin’ a peanut butter sandwich at the time.”

Grant Rolston was born and raised in ranching country near Penticton, British Columbia. After graduating school, he worked on a purebred Hereford ranch, then assumed a position at Western Breeders Artificial Insemination Unit. In 1980, he left the livestock scene and joined the Edmonton Police Department, where he received his formal training in photography, working for the IDENT unit (crime scene investigation). After a decade, he returned to the industry, purchasing a herd of purebred Angus cattle but both Grant and his wife, Lauralee, worked off the ranch to make a living. He chose livestock photography and is now Canada’s premier livestock photographer of beef cattle. Grant and Lauralee travel throughout nine provinces in Canada for on farm photography, in addition to all major livestock shows, including the Royal Winter Fair in Toronto, the Canadian Western Agribition, and all major National Junior shows in the summer months. Grant and Lauralee Rolston reside in Vulcan, Alberta. With four decades of experience, Grant shares things that are “Not Taken for Granted.”

We’ve dubbed it the “the smiling house.” On my family’s regular route through the Sandhills, there’s a lonely old place; rain and time have left the wood devoid of color. Yet, with its classic, square farmhouse design and a little imagination its two upstairs windows make eyes. It sags so much that the porch looks like it’s turned up in a smile. Every time we pass the “smiling house,” I do the opposite, however. There are no signs that anybody has cared about the place in quite some time, but I can’t help thinking about a time when someone did. “That was somebody’s dream, somebody’s hope,” as the old Tracy Byrd song goes. “They had big plans, they had no doubts.” We always wonder when we’ll drive past and find it’s disappeared into the sea of grass, either due to Mother Nature or management. Of course, it could be they have a bigger, nicer place more suitable for ranch headquarters or dozens of other explanations, but my mind often settles on the depressing thought that perhaps that operation didn’t survive a ’50s drought or the ’80s farm crisis. A little way down the sparse highway, I see a ranch that probably dates back to the same period, but it’s a starkly different picture. The well-kept house could look much like it did new, perhaps 100 years ago. There’s a bustle of activity around the place, with evidence that the people living there grow everything from tomatoes and cucumbers to kids and cattle. As I travel past slices of the country with a past I know only in general, I often wonder about their specific history. What could we learn from the places that failed and the ones that flourish? Sometimes I’m lucky enough to learn those stories. Last month, I sat down with two different cattle feeders. One male, one female. One 96, one close to

80. One in Nebraska, one in Colorado. One large scale, one small. There were many differences in their journey, but also many similarities of how one ends up looking back on a career in agriculture with collectively more wins than losses. Here are a few pearls of wisdom: • Work hard, spend wisely. “First, you’re so busy trying to make a living, you haven’t got time to wonder what’s going to happen in the years to come,” one said. They both talked about the physical labor and mental energy it took building their businesses. They still practice frugality. “Keep enough reserves that you know you’re going to weather a storm,” said the other. • Challenges aren’t something to fear, but rather something to learn from. “Some of those are good because it will humble you. You get to going along pretty good and you get to feeling pretty good about yourself and you get in one of those and you’ll get a little humility back,” said the cattleman. • Embrace technology. An adding machine and typewriter have given way to the computer, “but that’s progress; and we’re always for progress, really. Not progress for itself. Not progress because the neighbors have it,” she said. “Progress, that it will fit your business and be profitable in your business.” • Remember your buyer. “If you give them what they want, you can rest assured you’re going to have a profit.” Both feeders have watched quality grades increase and consumer demand follow suit. “You’ll be rewarded for your work. It’s easier to go downhill than it is to push something uphill.” I’ll be smiling at the gems I picked up from these seasoned producers long after that landmark house falls into a final frown. “Nicole, I think you have cancer,” the doctor told me. That stopped me in my tracks, as it would anyone. Unbelievable. I’m young, a picture of health — there’s no way this was happening to me. But there I was, 25 years old, sitting in a doctor’s office, hearing the data points that suggested otherwise. We would have to dig deeper, run more tests. There’s nothing like a crisis to shift perspective. Suddenly, everything that’s actually important snaps into vivid focus. Changes that didn’t seem necessary become crystal clear, urgent. In agriculture it’s often the same. It takes a calving season wreck to realize a selection mistake, a “drought of the century” to remember how vital are your abundant water sources, a market crash to shed light on the type of cattle that pay the bills in both good times and bad. It takes a disaster to reprioritize the things we always knew were significant, but thought could wait until tomorrow. Live and learn, right? Unless you don’t survive the lesson, not to be morbid. In life and business, we can get caught up in the day-to-day whirlwind and miss time for analysis and planning for dramatically better outcomes with less risk. We always intend to, but there just never seems to be enough time. These decisions are often hard, requiring time for research, investment in knowing and sometimes adjusting the status quo. Change isn’t easy until it’s necessary. But it’s a whole

lot better to evaluate and make some hard adjustments now, before adversity is staring you in the face. The trick is knowing what you’re up against. You’ve got to run the tests, analyze the results, then make the changes. The process might uncover a disaster waiting to happen. It could also reveal an opportunity for improved profits, for a better life. Recently I sat across a rancher’s dinner table looking through carcass data. As we flipped through the pages we talked about what certain things meant, whether this number or that was good or bad. It was good; really good: 37% Prime good. There are few things that give us honest feedback like data from well-proven science. It doesn’t think, doesn’t lie, only tells what is, what could be and what isn’t. It can expose weakness and point us in the right direction, if only we take time to test, reflect and then do the hard part—act. Like the rancher, I got lucky and my final tests came back cancer-free. Tests that I originally thought were a total waste of time and money. Instead, I gained a different perspective, priorities and course of action going forward. Is there a part of your business that’s overdue for a checkup? Maybe it’s time to put it to the test. Canadian Angus Foundation Announces Junior Ambassador, Dick Turner, Scholarship Recipient & Outstanding Young Angus Breeder June 9, 2018: for immediate release Comox, BC - The Canadian Angus Foundation is pleased to announce that the 2018 Robert C. McHaffie Junior Ambassador is Matthew McGillivray of Kamloops, BC; Macy Liebreich of Radville, SK received the Dick Turner Memorial Award; Karl and Kristine Sauter of Wawota, SK were selected as the Outstanding Young Angus Breeder. Awards were presented at the Canadian Angus Convention banquet this evening. Robert C. McHaffie Junior Ambassador Matthew McGillivray from Kamloops, BC is attending the University of Alberta and plans to obtain a Bachelor of Science in Agriculture with a major in Animal Science. Upon completion, he will pursue a Doctorate in Veterinary Studies at the Western College of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Saskatchewan, leading to a career as a large animal veterinarian specializing in food animal production. McGillivray’s family operation is McGillivray Land & Livestock in Kamloops, BC where he has established a personal purebred Angus herd with Canadian genetics. The Robert C. McHaffie Junior Ambassador program selects one Canadian Junior Angus (CJA) member to be an ambassador for the Canadian Angus Association at events across Canada and one international experience. Four other CJA members competed for the award. Tyra Fox of Lloydminster, SK; Robert Geis from Barrhead, AB; Jarrett Hargrave of Proton Station, ON and Jennifer Jermey of Ashern, MB all deserve recognition for their impressive efforts in the competition. Tyra Fox of Lloydminster, SK has just completed her first year of pre-veterinary studies at the University of Regina. In addition to working on her family Angus operation, Justamere Farms, she was a member of the Alberta Bandits 4-H club for 12 years serving as treasurer, secretary and president. Fox is the Saskatchewan Junior Angus Association President and a director with Canadian Junior Angus. Robert Geis from Barrhead, AB is a director on both the Alberta Junior Angus Association and Canadian Junior Angus boards. His family operation is Geis Angus Farm where they operate a purebred Black Angus herd of 50 head. Geis has been actively involved in 4-H and also plays for the Barrhead Stealers Tier 1 AA ice hockey team, winning a gold medal and two silver medals in provincial competitions. Jarrett Hargrave of Proton Station, ON is studying Animal Science Technology at Lakeland College in Vermilion, AB. His family Angus operation is Harprey Farms at Proton Station, ON. Hargrave is also a 10-year 4-H member whose hobbies include judging shows, showing cattle across Canada, and playing baseball in the spring. Jennifer Jermey of Ashern is the junior representative on the Manitoba Angus Association board of directors. She was involved with 4-H from 2004 through 2016. Jermey currently attends Brandon University where she is studying education. She is involved with her family operation, Spruce Ridge Black Angus. Dick Turner Memorial Award Macy Liebreich completed her term as the Robert C. McHaffie Junior Ambassador and is a third-year commerce student at the University of British Columbia Sauder School of Business. She hopes to pursue a degree in law after completing her Bachelor of Commerce degree in order to pursue a career in beef and agriculture advocacy. Her family operation is Merit Cattle Co. In addition to 4-H involvement, she played hockey for the Weyburn AAA Goldwings, a high-level performance female hockey team and was also involved in the Junior Achievement program before starting university. Liebreich is also an Ice Team Member with Canucks Sports & Entertainment, assisting with fan promotions at Vancouver Canucks games and events. The Dick Turner Memorial Award was established after the passing of legendary Angus icon Dick Turner in July of 2010. During his lifetime, Dick committed 55 years of his career to livestock publishing and successfully promoted and advertised the Angus breed specifically through the Canadian Aberdeen Angus News magazine. It was Dick’s ability to foster relationships and boundless enthusiasm that led to his successful tenure. He believed that “information is power” and was best shared with all stakeholders. Dick was a hard worker and recognized the quality of life and relationships as the most rewarding part of his job. Today’s Angus Advantage 60

Outstanding Young Angus Breeder Karl and Kristine Sauter both grew up on mixed farming operations with commercial cow/calf operations. Karl created his purebred Angus herd in 2007 with the purchase of some bred females. Kristine created a small herd of purebred Red Angus females through her 4-H participation. They met through 4-H at a young age and married in 2011. Currently, Bridgeway Livestock has over 160 Red Angus and Red Simmental breeding females. The Sauters are strong supporters of the Canadian Angus Tag Program and 4-H which both remain very active with. Kristine is also a director with the Saskatchewan Angus Association and Karl is involved with Canadian Western Agribition. The Outstanding Young Angus Breeder Award recognizes an Angus breeder between the ages of 22 and 30 who has demonstrated a desire to stay involved in the Angus business for years to come, based on their involvement within the breed up to this point in his or her career. The award comes with a $3,500 cash prize. History Project Contest Winner Announced CAF Chair Cecilie Fleming also announced the winner of the contest to name the Foundation’s new history book which will launch at Convention 2019 in Alberta. Meggan Laidler of Frenchman Butte, SK won the $750 cash prize for her title submission, The Breed, the Legends, the History: Canadian Angus History Book, 2019 Edition. A genetic improvement program is an excellent idea for all purebred breeders. Keeping accurate dam produce records, actual adjusted weights and any other information that will aid in the continual improvement of his/her cattle for the commercial beef industry is an essential duty of the purebred breeder. A herd or a breed can only be genetically improved through line breeding in order to set desirable genetic traits. Continuous out crossing does exactly the opposite. I call it caesar salad genetics. The only valid reason for producing and improving purebred cattle is to improve the quality and economic eﬃciency of the commercial cattle, moving the industry forward. Line breeding uniformity is something we as humans despise for ourselves; most of us cherish our individuality and non-conformity. One human offspring is the result of a possible two billion genetic offspring combinations of his or her parents. Individual traits are dominant or recessive, that’s why some siblings look alike and others do not.

uniform calves that make uniform carcasses that grow fast with lots of muscle. Random matings without consideration of pedigree, essentially result in many purebred herds that use unrelated bulls and base their selection of sires in show rings; Toronto Royal, Agribition or Denver or what magazine reps predict will be hot next. Line breeding or inbreeding concentrates on particular family lines within a cattle group; it is probably the most misunderstood and ignored practice in the cattle business. It takes time and patience; people aren’t entering the purebred business to make their life’s work. After nominating the champion female, Dr. Long said to me, “She is superb in structure; what a great female. Tell me what is the pedigree.” When I told him, “She is the result of a sire-daughter mating,” Dr. Long said, “You must be rich?” “No, smart!”



Cattle matings are controlled by the breeders; the cattle breeders need to breed for uniformity, the commercial cattlemen and the packing plants are whom we need to please, and uniformity is the name of the game. They want Today’s Angus Advantage 61

Generous Buyers Raise $169,750 in Seventh Annual Building the Legacy Fundraiser Auction June 10, 2018: for immediate release Comox, BC - Generous donors bid heartily to raise $169,750 during the seventh annual Canadian Angus Foundation (CAF) Building the Legacy fundraiser auction during the Canadian Angus National Convention in Comox, BC. It was the third-highest amount raised in the history of the fundraiser which was initiated in 2012 to support the CAF in preserving and expanding the Angus breed for future generations through education, youth development, scientific and market research and historical preservation. A new record was set when Jim Round partnered with Robert Geis to purchase their pick of the Crescent Creek Angus 2018-born heifer calves for $17,000. Jim Round of KBJ Round Farms was honoured earlier in the evening for 50 consecutive years of Canadian Angus Association membership and Robert Geis was a finalist in the Robert C. McHaffie Junior Ambassador Competition. The 2018 Robert C. McHaffie Junior Ambassador, announced just before the fundraiser auction began, Matthew McGillivray of Kamloops, BC purchased a pick of Sealin Creek’s 2018-born heifer calves selected in consultation with donor Dan Speller for $5,250. The high selling embryo/experience donation was from Blairs.Ag of Lanigan, SK. One package of three Red Angus embryos with a bonus of dinner at the Diplomat in Regina and tickets to the Saskatchewan Roughriders sold for $4,500 to Crisis Cattle Co. of Parson, BC. The high selling embryo donation was from Miller Wilson, Lee and Dawn Wilson, from DMM Blackbird 105A for $2,500 each to Merit Cattle Co., the Liebreich family, who donated a pick of their heifer calves last year to top the 2017 fundraiser auction. The high selling semen donation was a tie between Bar S Range Boss 4002, donated by Merit Cattle Co. and Grady C. Dickerson to Miller Wilson and HA Cowboy Up 5405, donated by Hamilton Farms, the Hamilton family. The lots sold for $550 per package of straws to J&S Cattle Co. Other sale highlights include a custom-made quilt donated by Gail Wildman of Towaw Cattle Co. Ltd. of Sangudo, AB that sold to Six Mile Ranch of Fir Mountain, SK for $2,250; two Hycroft collectible plates donated by CAF Executive Director Belinda Wagner from the personal collection of late Angus personality Rob Holowaychuk that sold for $3,000 to Jim and Rita Round and Geis Angus; a framed Red Angus print, “The Red Angus” by Scottish artist Angela Davidson, donated by the Canadian Angus Association and purchased by Benchmark Angus for $3,000; and three ceramic pieces, a Beswick Aberdeen Angus bull donated by Donna Donaldson and a Border Fine Arts cow and bull donated by James Arnott of Coul Angus in Scotland, all of which were purchased by the Chappell family of Heart of the Valley Farms in Courtenay, BC. The 2018 sale featured buyers from across Canada and online through DLMS. Generous donors contributed more than 60 lots of Angus semen and embryos; five live herd choices; and numerous artwork and experience packages including tickets to the Toronto Blue Jays; Toronto Maple Leafs tickets; Canadian Beef Industry Conference registrations and accommodation package; a South African hunting safari for two; collectible pottery pieces; and a variety of services for seedstock producers.
