On behalf of Craig Angus welcome to the 31st edition of the Top Cut Bull Sale.
I read last year’s welcome and realized not much has changed but there is no point in complaining about drought and lack of feed. It is what it is and look forward to what this spring brings. For me nothing brings more optimism than the first-born calf and first blades of green grass.
Ours bulls are not pushed. They are fed a high forage ration the first winter aiming for a gain of 2 pounds per day then turned out on grass from late April to October.
They have been vaccinated for foot rot and will require their annual booster. Creekside Veterinary Clinic will complete semen tests.
You are welcome to come and have a look at the bulls anytime. The bulls look better in person. Dad and I took the pictures and as many of you probably have guessed we are not blessed with an abundance of patience!

Welcome to the 31st annual Top Cut Bull Sale catalogue. We are pleased to offer you a variety of bulls from 3 different sires. Some of these bulls will add bulk to your calves, some will produce fancy replacement heifers, and some will help your heifers calve with ease. These are the best bulls of our 2021 calf crop from cows that have survived multiple culling points over the years and from bulls that have been carefully selected for the traits they add to our herd and yours. As always, our focus is on cattle with sound structure that produce top-quality calves with minimal inputs.
We strive to produce better cattle each year. With that in mind, we participated in the 2022 Saskatchewan Angus Tour that travelled through the southwest last August. Participating in the tour allowed us to show our cattle to a larger audience and to view our cattle with the critical eyes of fellow producers which is always insightful. One of our tour highlights was the confirmation of the docility of our cattle. Judging the quietness of a group of cattle is difficult when the same few people always handle them. Inviting a couple hundred people to view a handful of cattle displayed in small pens is a good test of the animals’ docility. When the tour arrived at the ranch on August 11, we had all of the sale bulls, about half of our purebred replacement heifers, one of our upcoming herd sires, and six cow-calf pairs on display. For cattle with zero experience with large crowds they did very well.
We are improving the quality of not only the bulls we sell, but also the way we present them. For example, if you are too busy to view the bulls in person, we post videos of sale bulls online in early March, so you can evaluate them from a variety of angles and in motion. Each video also includes pictures of a bull’s feet, so you can judge this important detail for yourself. When relying on pictures or videos to evaluate one of our bulls, we want you to know that our pictures and videos are accurate representations. We do clip heads and tailheads so you can see the structure hidden under a thick January hair coat. We also remove most of the dirt and manure from them prior to photographing and videoing, so it isn’t a distraction. Digitally, we follow the same principles. Any editing is done to help showcase what is already present whether by lightening a photo so you can see the contours of a bull or removing things that distract from the bull’s appearance. Photos are NEVER manipulated to make a bull appear longer, thicker, deeper, etc. We know each producer is looking for specific characteristics to complement and improve his or her herd. We do our best to critically evaluate each bull and then highlight his finest features, so you may choose the bull that meets your needs whether you see him in person or not.

I was looking for increased growth performance when I purchased Hi Def 119F, and he does deliver. He has plenty of frame and mass to add pounds. We had an exciting summer at Bear Creek Angus, we actually had some moisture in June and some crop to put up for silage and greenfeed. We also hosted the Saskatchewan Angus Tour which was a great experience and we were so thankful to have such a great turn out.
With where we live efficiency remains at the utmost importance. In a world of efficiency, we focus on cattle that will walk soundly the duration of their lives, milk, breed, and maintain their condition without any maintenance. This leads to fewer cull cows, requiring fewer heifer calves retained, maximizing calf production. When you’re shopping Bear Creek Angus two year old bulls, we’ve done our utmost to ensure all of these things in their breeding and we strive for every bull to go out and improve the genetics at your operation.
When the structure, udder quality, and fertility is taken care of: at Bear Creek we breed for length of body, eye appealing angus character, including an angus head which promotes calving ease, and lots of natural muscle. When selecting a sire, we try to use a bull with the fewest flaws.
Our environment changes what type of cattle work where and on what inputs. Our cattle are raised on ranch conditions and are developed slowly to ensure longevity. Conditions can be harsh in our drought-prone area, cattle need to travel for grass and water, and thus we’ve become extremely harsh on foot quality and fleshing ability as we mentioned above. We solely make our living raising cattle, commercial and purebred, and our cattle work for us because we need them to. And we believe they can work for you too.

Windy is an impressive herd bull. He moves like a cat, is long, full of meat, and has successfully bred our heifers for years, but with too many daughters in the replacement pen, bumped him to cows for his last year. Windy did very well for us, always covering his field and remaining sound. There’s a lot of good from his sons and daughters. Two years ago, we retained a windy son to continue his excellent genetic profile within our own herd and thus offer this last son from him.

We used 119J on a group of young cows, because without doubt he offers a ton of genetic potential. He’s incredibly long and easy fleshing with a low birthweight that should calve heifers. If we showed cattle, his mother would certainly be one we would hang a halter on. She’s a picture of an angus cow and certainly proved it by swinging for the fence on her first calf, producing a calf that weighed 692lbs adjusted weight. There’s a lot of our program in his pedigree, the maternal grandsire I raised, and was a great bull, stout and easy fleshing with rock solid feet under him but we lost him to an injury. He comes from Stoney and 26T dam, which were instrumental in our program for years. His grandmother is a Jackson daughter, who was a tank, but sold because she came up open, but his great grandmother is 100B who has another top bull in the pen and is a consistent top producing cow. There’s phenotype and pedigree to back up this bull, he definitely needs to be considered for your next herdsire.

Jackson is impressive. Starting with large, good feet, legs with a little extra bone to them and natural thickness with a masculine angus head. His bulls are sure to please, they check all the boxes, but even more so do his heifers; they are incredibly consistent with a stamp to them. We’ve calved a couple crops of heifers and they’re becoming some our strongest cows. Aside from that, he’s an outcross pedigree that does not sacrifice quality in any shape or form. Jackson is gone now from an injury, but we are using a son and will his impact on our herd for many years to come.

I’ve always really liked this bull, as a calf he stood right alongside the older calves. He’s probably the thickest bull in the offering, while maintaining length and attractiveness. While he’s not related to our old Stoney Creek bull he reminds me of him with his shape of rib and extra muscle popping out. We retained this heifer bull because of his quality. He is long and growthy and should calve heifers with ease. TERMS OF SALE: The terms of the sale are cash or cheque, made payable in Canadian funds immediately after the sale. The right of ownership shall not pass from seller to buyer until settlement is made. As soon as the animal is sold it becomes the responsibility of the purchaser.
BREEDING GUARANTEE: All cattle are sound and sell with a responsible breeder guarantee of satisfaction. In the event any bull 14 months of age or over fails to prove a breeder after being used on cows known to be breeders, within six months of the sale date, may be returned to the seller at the buyers expense. The seller reserves the privilege of trying to prove that animal a breeder. Full settlement and satisfaction of all claims is the option of the seller (whether return of the purchase price or replacement of the animal with one of equal value.) Any animal returned must be free of disease and in good health.
CATTLE INSPECTION: All carry permanent identity tags corresponding to the sale lot numbers. All shall be available for inspection prior to the sale.
ANNOUNCEMENTS: All announcements from the auction block will take precedence over the printed matter in the catalogue. Buyers are therefore cautioned to pay close attention to any announcements.
DISPUTES: In the case of disputes bidding will be reopened between the parties involved. If no further bid is made, the buyer will be the person from whom the auctioneer accepted the last bid. The Auctioneer’s decision in such matters is final.
LIABILITIES: All people who attend the sale do so at their own risk. The owners, Management and Sale Staff assume no liability, legal or otherwise, for property loss or any accidents that may occur on or about the premises.
CERTIFICATE OF REGISTRY: A certificate of registry duly transferred will be Furnished to the buyer by the breeder for each registered animal after settlement has been made.
