By: Chris Poley Welcome to the first annual member directory, we are confident that this is a valuable tool, not only for our breeders, but more importantly, for progressive commercial producers using and seeking the highest quality Angus sires the world has to offer. Spring of 2015 started off earlier than the past couple, with the excitement of a new calf crop worth more than ever and no devastating spring storms. On the heels of several above average rain fall years, the cattle industry had a buzz unlike anything seen before.As cool temperatures and frosty nights hung into June and no rain to kick start the grass, many producers began to worry and a few even started to panic. They began sourcing hay and the market quickly responded to early demand, human nature took over and greedy prices were quoted. Fortunately for most, things turned around during the second half of July with more wide spread rains, causing hay prices back to a more reasonable level. Pastures have rebounded and normal fall grazing is in the future for most operations in western Canada. Harvest has begun and feed grain markets continue to look flat, another positive for producers looking to supplement a below average hay crop.

NOT TAKEN FOR GRANTED Farm Boss
Shorty wasn’t much of a farmer and he was okay with that…..but, every once in a while he found himself on a tractor helping out with the farming end of the ranch. He mostly did it because he kinda liked the farm boss of the operation and he knew that if he ever needed anything, the farm boss would be there for him. So it was that Shorty pulled his tractor off to the side of the road this late afternoon to allow a silver coloured minivan to pass. The driver waved his appreciation as he passed and Shorty recognized him as the farm boss’ minister. Shorty had met the minister a month or so before late one afternoon in the barn. That afternoon, Shorty was doctoring one of the bulls in the squeeze. He was pretty much finished with the rather uncooperative patient and, as he reached over to release the bulls head, the bull brought his head up and caught Shorty’s elbow between his poll and the frame of the headgate. Shorty began to cuss, not just a short couple of F bombs, but a rather unholy description of the son of God. Then…. he noticed that he had company, a plump, soft looking guy with the biggest cross hanging around his neck that Shorty had ever seen. The man’s face was flushed and had a look of disgust. Shorty looked at the man, and quickly decided that the best defense was a good offense. “What the hell do you want?” “Ahh” The fat guy stammered, “I’m looking for Jon.” “Well he ain’t here!” The man just looked at Shorty, kind of like he had pretty much figured that out. “He’ll be at his house” Shorty waved his good arm in the general direction of the house and the man left. The next morning Jon, the farm boss, met Shorty in the barn. “I hear you met my minister” Jon began with a stupid little grin.
“Geez man, I am sorry.” “He’ll get over it..my wife maybe not.” Shorty wheeled the tractor into the hay yard and pulled up next to the farm boss. Jon was a big, lanky dude, well over six feet tall, mostly legs and arms, with a wild mess of blonde hair under one of those drug store cowboy hats. He was raised on a dairy farm, and really, really wanted to be a cowboy. He was way too mechanical to be a cowboy, but did a helluva job as the farm boss. He was a Dutchman, as was his wife, and as well as being a great family man, he was a good church going man. Shorty really liked him. “Hey Shorty, I need some help” “Name it” “Well,” Jon started. “ The in- laws are up at the house…. and …well, I was wondering if I could go with you tomorrow”. “Where?” “It doesn’t really matter, what are going to be doing?” “I gotta go up to Jackpine Lake and move some cows outa the flats”. Jon’s face lit up. “You will go to hell for that” Shorty warned. “Be at the barn at 6” Jon wasn’t late the next morning, in fact he was waiting when Shorty pulled up. They saddled up, Shorty on a little bay gelding that he called Ben and Jon on a big, old fat grey mare that was the only horse on the place that would fit the only saddle on the place that fit Jon. They loaded the horses and headed out. A couple of hours later found the two following a group of 25 or so pairs with a couple of bulls down a gravel road near Jackpine Lake. Jon had a grin from ear to ear and Shorty was shaking out a loop. Shorty was often bored on these deals, so to pass the time he would heal the calves at the back of the pack. He never jerked the slack, just set a trap and then let them step out. Ben was so used to his rider that he never even paid attention. Shorty picked a fat little

steer and set the loop where he wanted, but the surprised calf jumped ahead with a startled little bellow.
“Partner?”
The calf’s mother swung around to check things out, and Shorty smiled. 327. The cow, with a yellow tag in her ear that read 327, looked at Shorty with a look of disgust. She was an old Hereford cross, with a bad attitude and a short stubby horn that stuck out and up from the left side of her head. Shorty re-coiled his rope.
“We need her on the shore.”
Jon was watching all of this with a quizzical look on his face. “Can I try?” Shorty nodded. “Just don’t get in a wreck” Jon reached for the lariat hanging from the saddle at his right knee. He flipped the straps from the coil and knocked several years of dust off the rope. Hefumbled around for a moment or two, swung the rope over his head, and knocked the drug store cowboy hat off his head. Shorty looked at him as he jumped off old grey and retrieved the hat. Jon rode up to the cattle, swung the rope and threw it. He threw it at, well Shorty wasn’t sure what he was throwing it at, but the loop sailed out over the backs of the tail enders. As it began to settle, 327 jerked her head around to check on her chubby little offspring. Her stubby little horn hooked the loop and it dropped over her head as neat as can be. Suddenly everything went south. Cow number 327 bellowed the death bellow and plunged forward, jerking up the slack. Jon looked at the mess in front of him in horror and old grey was suddenly 5 years old again. “Dally up!” yelled Shorty as Jon, Grey and 327 plunged forward through the bunch. “Shit” thought Shorty as he set off after his helper. The dog was hot on 327’s heels encouraging her to run as fast as she could with old grey and Jon hot on her trail. She turned a hard left and made a bee line to the edge of the muddy lake. By the time Shorty got there, 327 was stopped chest deep in water looking at the grey horse and the grinning rider to which she was attached.
Jon looked over and the grin began to fade. Jon nodded and began to move old grey. It was at that moment that 327 noticed her calf walking towards her behind Shorty, and she did what she thought she needed to do….save her calf. She bolted for the shore, plunging ahead in large determined lunges. Jon moved old grey to the left to follow her out and just as old grey was half way through the turn, 327 hit the end of the rope. She hit the end with such force that it snapped the lariat, right at the hondo, sending the slack back at the solid end of the rope, the horn of grey’s saddle. Now….had old grey been upright, the rope could have done some damage. However, old grey was on her way down, the force of 327 pulling her directly sideways into the muddy water. Jon was still in the saddle, trying to will old grey upright and that is when the rope hit him…..right in the hat. Shorty watched in disbelief as the hat sailed across the water. It hit the water about the same time as Grey and Jon. Jon came up first, soaking wet and blowing the lake water out of his mouth, followed by old Grey, who plunged for shore leaving a very damp Dutchman standing nearly waist deep in the lake. Shorty could not believe the string of cussing that came out of Jon’s mouth, it made Shorty a little uncomfortable. Jon turned and waded towards shore, swearing at each muddy step. It was then that he noticed a familiar figure on shore, not Shorty, an older man loading kids into a silver minivan. The man turned once more to gather the remaining fishing gear, tossed it into the van and roared off without a word. “Reverend” nodded Shorty as the van raced past. Shorty never saw the minister again, but was pretty sure that someone in Jon’s church would be blaming him for the corruption of a good family man. Jon never said, Shorty never asked.
“Now what partner?” asked Jon.
Grant Rolston was born and raised in ranching country near Penticton, British Columbia. After graduating school, he worked on a purebred Hereford ranch, then assumed a position at Western Breeders Artificial Insemination Unit. In 1980, he left the livestock scene and joined the Edmonton Police Department, where he received his formal training in photography, working for the IDENT unit (crime scene investigation). After a decade, he returned to the industry, purchasing a herd of purebred Angus cattle but both Grant and his wife, Lauralee, worked off the ranch to make a living. He chose livestock photography and is now Canada’s premier livestock photographer of beef cattle. Biography: Dr. Colin Palmer is an Associate Professor of Theriogenology (Animal Reproduction) at the Western College of Veterinary Medicine. Originally from Nova Scotia, Dr. Palmer worked in mixed practices in Ontario and British Columbia and has owned/operated a practice in Saskatchewan. Dr. Palmer along with his wife Kim and children Lauren, Emily and Carter run a herd of purebred Red Angus cattle under the KC Cattle Co. name.
Pinkeye Just like every other cattle producer out there it seems that I have to deal with my own share of doctoring from time to time. This year my problem is pinkeye which I now have dubbed “Pinkeye the New Old Problem”. In nearly 20 years of raising cattle on the prairies I have not had one single case in my own herd. Sure it is something we regularly see in veterinary practice, but probably because of my apparent good fortune I began to believe it was a problem limited mainly to whited face cattle. I guess that is not entirely true since I have Angus cattle. Pinkeye, or infectious bovine keratoconjunctivitis (IBK) as it is named in the literature, is the most common eye disease of cattle. Medical terms are always descriptive and really don’t need to be scary. Infectious means what it says – a bacteria, virus, fungus, parasite is the cause, and “itis” tacked on to the end of a word always means inflammation. Keratitis refers to inflammation of the cornea or clear surface of the eyeball and conjunctivitis refers to inflammation of the pink (conjunctival) tissue around the eyeball. Inflammation of both tissues equals keratoconjunctivitis. The veterinary literature frequently states that pinkeye occurs most commonly in Hereford or Hereford-cross cattle, but all breeds can be affected. The most widely accepted cause is a bacteria called Moraxella bovis (M. bovis) which possesses the ability to attach to the surface of the eye after which it releases a toxin that damages corneal cells. Cell damage on the cornea ultimately gives way to, slow-healing, painful surface ulcers. Mycoplasma, chlamydia and infectious bovine rhinotracheitis (IBR) have also been implicated. Many times these other bugs serve to assist M. bovis by enabling its colonization and spread; however, they are also capable of producing ocular disease on their own. Another bacteria, Moraxella bovoculi, was recently discovered in bacterial cultures from the eyes of calves with pinkeye, but so far it appears that it may only be incidental or play a supportive role to M. bovis. Both M. bovis and M. bovoculi can be cultured from otherwise normal healthy eyes providing proof that our understanding of what tips the scales toward the development of full-blown disease is far from complete. A number of external factors have been implicated including ultraviolet radiation, dust, and sharp plant leaves/ plant awns. Moraxella bovis has adapted to living on and in flies. Flies irritating the eyes are without a doubt one of the most important causal factors with the ability to spread the disease rapidly throughout the herd. It is also very likely that certain strains of M. bovis are more likely to cause disease than others; therefore, mixing of animals from different sources may expose seemingly resistant cattle to an indefensible challenge. The immune system is capable of mounting a protective response to M. bovis and commercial vaccines have been available for some time. Maxi/Guard® and Pinkeye Shield® are examples both requiring an initial shot and a
booster. Other products, or these same products under different names may be available in other countries. Vaccination is not considered to be 100 percent effective, but may be very helpful in a herd situation to limit the number of new cases. One of my practitioner friends says that she has found vaccination to be very helpful in herds dealing with an outbreak as it will dramatically decrease the number of new cases. Your plan of attack should be to treat the clinical cases with antibiotic and then vaccinate the rest of the herd. Vaccination will do nothing for the animals with disease. Following an outbreak there should be some level of herd immunity, but the duration of protection is probably shortlived - less than a year. Mixing cattle, especially young ones, or a herd that has never experienced pinkeye with diseased cattle will most certainly result in problems. Classic cases of pinkeye include corneal edema expressed as the typical blue-gray opacity and ulceration. Excessive tearing, squinting and swelling of tissue may be all that is present with very early cases and are the first signs to disappear during recovery. Without treatment, opacity and ulceration develop in as little as 1 or 2 days and will require several weeks to months to completely heal. Severe cases of pinkeye should not be ignored as swelling in combination with a weakened corneal surface can lead to rupture of the eyeball and permanent blindness. Healing eyes continue to look nasty for several weeks, but you will know that it is getting better because of the absence of tearing and squinting. The red lines on the cornea represent the ingrowth of blood vessels as the cornea heals. Once the cornea clears the affected animal will regain limited vision in that eye. Nasty corneal scars are generally permanent. A number of treatment options are available. Topical penicillin or penicillin carefully injected into the side of the eyeball or swollen eyelid tissue can provide adequate levels of drug in the tear fluid. Injected drugs tend to maintain higher concentrations of drug for longer than topical applications. Oil based, topical penicillin treatments, for example mastitis preparations, persist longer than the aqueous product. If injecting penicillin or applying oil based penicillin preparations then treatment should be repeated every two days. Tilmicosin (Micotil®) subcutaneous or oxytetracycline intramuscularly, or preferably subcutaneously, have both been shown to shorten the clinical course of disease and decreased M.bovis spread to susceptible herd mates. When treating animals it is a good idea to employ some sort of fly control - Boss®or Cylence® pouron products are great for treating the individual animal with a duration of at least 2 weeks. Eye protecting patches can decrease fly infestation and protect the eye from irritating sun light, but leave the bottom open to allow the discharge to drain.

The Final Word
Scotland is famous for the origin of golf, Aberdeen Angus cattle and single malt scotch... although all three can mix, rarely do we see a good Angus cattle breeder as a good golfer but they usually can do a great job on the latter! Aberdeen Angus cattle have been recorded in Scotland since at least the 16th century; 156 years ago in 1859, the first recorded importation was made by Sir George Simpson, Governor of the Hudson’s Bay Company. In 1877 the first recorded Angus calf was born in North America at the Ontario Experimental Farm, Guelph, Ontario but it took nearly three decades before the Canadian Aberdeen Angus Breeder’s Association was incorporated in 1906; two years later the first herd book was published. In 1968 red animals became eligible for registration and in 1972 the Canadian Red Angus Promotional Society (CRAPS) was formed. No doubt the importation of four Angus bulls by George Grant to Victoria, Kansas in 1873, led to the change in the landscape south of the 49th parallel. These were unusual, as the normal North American cattle consisted of Shorthorns and Longhorns, but they were used only in crossbreeding. It only took one calf crop for breeders to see the value of the Angus breed and shortly afterwards many more bulls and females were imported. In 1883, the American Angus Association was founded and has grown to become the largest beef breed association in the world. In late 2005, this publication was founded with the first issue mailed in early February, 2006. After much brain storming, the title to be linked with Angus would be “Advantage.” The reasoning was simple... owning Angus cattle offered a decided advantage over their counterparts. Consider the advantage... - Motherhood - the Angus cow is “Queen of the Range.” Like the Scots, she is very thrifty and adapts to all types of terrain and climate. Great mothers with awesome, problem free udders that promise a fat calf, while maintaining fertility. - Genetic diversity - the Angus breed has the largest gene pool worldwide. Angus, (one of the oldest breeds in the world) are the most progressive and scientific of all their contemporaries. Producing quality Angus seed stock is relatively simple, using genetics that have proven predictability. - Industry demand - Angus breeding stock is the number one preferred breed worldwide! - Consumer acceptance - Angus is a “household name” in the family kitchen, restaurant trade and fast-food industry. Certified Angus Beef is served at most white table restaurants around the globe. - Carcass qualities - marbling ability, ideal carcass size, conversion and days on feed are ideal for the feedlot and packer. For those who have not taken the advantage of Angus cattle... it’s time to get started... for those who are using Angus...continue and reap the rewards... but most importantly enjoy being in a fun, profitable breed of cattle and be proud of providing “a true eating experience” for all!
