Wilbar Tools of the Trade 2023 Bull & Female Sale

Well, that was a fast year. Suddenly we find ourselves preparing for our 28th Annual Tools of the Trade Bull & Female. It’s truly an honour to have such incredible customers and supporters that have helped us stand the test of time. Thank you for once again considering our program.

As you know, we lost Tracey’s dad shortly before the sale last year. The outpouring of generosity we received to support the Alzheimer Society Canada and Summer Synergy was nothing short of incredible. Thank you so very much.

We are extremely proud of the bulls on offer this year. It’s an impressive pen of black bulls featuring the best sons to date of South Point, a powerful group of Custom Made sons and the first offering sired by Rainman. There are also sons by Crawford Guarantee and SAV America plus the only offering there will ever be sired by Wilbar Greenlight 839H. You’ll notice the first five lots are all backed by Wilbar Mayflower 507B & Wilbar Mayflower 409E. While we always endeavour to bring you new and exciting genetics through the sire side, our focus is always the strength of our cow herd. They don’t come much better than the Mayflowers – their maternal strength, structural soundness, udder quality and productivity are virtually unmatched.

The red pen is deep in quality and lead off by some exciting new sires including the exclusive first offering of the $50,000 Red PIE Quarterback 0814 and Red Wilbar Highlight 624H (part of our $28,000 choice lot in 2021). These sires, along with Red Wilbar Motivation 686H ($22,000 to BCR Ventures in Texas) & Red Twin Heritage Motivate 57E represent our continued commitment to high quality outcross genetics for the Red breed. This group of red bulls has you covered from calving ease to higher performance, all backed by maternally strong, sound, highly productive cows.

As in previous years, the bulls have been developed on a forage based diet with longevity in mind. The ration contains cereal silage, brown oats, tub ground hay and the Bullseye protein/mineral supplement to ensure proper growth & development. This ration promotes overall health, hair growth, foot quality, fertility and libido.

The bulls are sire verified, fertility tested, carcass evaluated and performance tested. Our goal is to provide you with the information you want to make the best selection for your needs.

Welcome to the “Tools of the Trade” Angus Bull and Female Sale, March 15, 2023 at the ranch, Dundurn, Saskatchewan. Established in 1963 and now celebrating their 28th Annual Bull sale, Wilbar, has been pioneers and breed leaders for an amazing seven decades. The name Wilbar is synonymous in producing and marketing top Red and Black Angus seedstock.

The 2023 lineup for Tools of the Trade is an exciting and dynamic offering with endless opportunities for purebred and commercial producers to enhance their breeding programs. These bulls will add pounds of pay weight to their calves with little to no fuss and add value to breeding programs through predictable replacement daughters as breeding females have become a valuable asset.

No doubt, everyone will find the future leaders, “Hennessey” and “Torrent”… although they lead as features, they do not overshadow this great lineup of rugged high performance prospects… the depth of the offering is amazing and uniform. The mix of power bulls and calving ease sons with plenty of testicle, lots of hair and overall dimension, make this offering suitable for all programs and all types of budgets. Hennessy is arguably one of the most complete Red Angus bulls we have raised in recent times. His combination of muscle expression, base width, high-quality foot and leg structure, and herd bull presence instantly pulls your attention his way. He is a balanced trait bull indexing 110 WW & 119 YW. Hennessy was successfully campaigned this fall when he was named Red Angus Champion in the Legends of the Fall at Farm Fair International as well as winning the Red Angus Division in the President’s Classic at Canadian Western Agribition. His sire Red Wilbar Highlight 624H is one of the best-footed Red Angus bulls to walk our pastures and has certainly passed this trait on to his progeny. The dam, Red Wilbar Lana 4F is a big ribbed brood cow with ideal udder quality. She knows how to produce the good ones indexing 108 WW on 3 calves. Highlight progeny are super soft made, with a big expansive rib cage and depth of body. The daughters are no different, definitely the right kind. 62K is no exception, following the mould of his consistent-producing sire. He indexed 109 WW and 115 YW ranking him near the top of the red bull pen. His dam comes from our friends at Redrich Farms. She is wedge-shaped and beautifully uddered. Here’s a bull that will have a lot of friends on sale day. You can’t help but be drawn to his body type and easy fleshing look. He is an extremely powerful bull with a very manageable birth weight allowing you to utilize him in a variety of roles. 114 WW and 105 YW index. Motivator 79K is a stud in the Red bull pen. He has power, he has presence. Dark red and loads of hair. He has a 104 WW and 119 YW index. His dam, granddam and great granddam are all donor cows. The Scaara cows are massive ribbed with loads of capacity and look. Did I mention the feet on these Motivation sons? We sure like them! You’ll notice the birthweight on this guy is a little bigger. He is the result of an IVF embryo that is known to sometimes come heavier at birth. Apparently a random result of the whole IVF process. Definitely one of the sale features for the heifer pen. This bull offers outcross genetics to the Canadian herd book through his sire. Quarterback has caused quite a stir in the US topping sales around the country. These are the first Quarterback genetics to sell in Canada. They offer solid and predictable calving ease combined with top-of-thebreed carcass genetics. We love the look of Playmaker 21K. Deep-bodied with lots of muscle expression without sacrificing light birth and moderate frame that will allow him to be used on heifers for multiple years. Upland is the only son of the $130,000 Township bull we have in the sale. We really like this bull for his stoutness and style. As he matures he’s going to develop into a very impressive herd bull. Adding to the equation is an outstanding donor dam. 53F was the 2020 Breeders.net World Champion Red Angus Cow. She is a gorgeous uddered cow that cranks out a good one every year. These Glenfiddich bulls really grab your attention when you tour through the pen. Deluge 239K is an ultra attractive bull that has the body, the mass and the style to be a great bull. Phenotypically he is very fault free showing off a balanced look. We sold a half interest in his dam a few years ago at Red Round Up where she was the high seller of the day at a $29,000 valuation to Ter-Ron Farms. 211E would be considered one of the top cows walking the pastures at Wilbar. A daughter brought $16,000 at the Opportunity Knocks 2.0 sale to Hillcrest Farming, SK., 2 sons have sold to Matt Olson, SK. and another son Wilbar Inspiration 510G serves as a herd sire at Wilbar. This bull is really cool patterned. We love how proud he looks, how deep bodied he is and how big hipped he is. The proof is in the pudding as to what Crackerjack daughters can do. If you are needing to soften up some cows and add some style, 92K is your bull. I don’t know how many times I’ve said to Tracey “this guy would have made a cool show bull”. This is the youngest bull in the red division of the sale but he sure doesn’t show it. Big time performance bull in a calving-ease package. He’s long and smooth but when you get in behind him there is base width and muscle. He has a 110 WW and 118 YW index. His dam is our favorite daughter of the 2014 Farm Fair Reserve Champion bull Wilbar Over the Top 825Z. Heifer bull option.

It is a pleasure to be working with the reputable Wilbar Cattle Co program and the entire Willms family. The Wilbar program is admired by purebred and commercial cattlemen as they continue to present a very strong and consistent set of yearlings and two year old Angus bulls every year.

When developing the yearling and two-year-old bulls it is important that rumen health stays a priority throughout every stage of the bull’s development. The bulls are slowly developed on a high protein, forage-based diet balanced to maximize the bull’s genetic potential and promote lean muscle growth. The bulls diet utilizes an organic mineral package to enhance the bull’s immunity and complement the bull’s overall growth and performance. The Wilbar cowherd also utilizes an organic mineral package throughout the winter which is essential to the health and longevity of the sale bulls on offer, as well as the reproduction of the cow herd. The nutrition and development of the bulls along with the entire cow herd is continually being monitored to meet environmental and season conditions to compliment the animal’s overall health.

This is our 4th year using South Point and every year we match him up a little better with our cows. The cross with Executive Decision might have been one of our best matings yet. Wilbar Chronical 103K has been a standout and one of the pen favorites leading up to the sale. He boasts power and muscle but still offers a light birth weight and calving ease. 113 WW and 117 YW indexes. His 2 yr old dam is a flush mate to the $20,000 Wilbar Executive Order 835H at Everblack, AB. and to featured lot 36 in this sale. Wilbar Torrent 138K is a phenotypic and performance standout. He has a distinctive herd bull look to advance most any herd. Muscle mass, base width, ideal foot and leg structure and a very quiet demeanor. 131 WW and 116 YW indexes. Performance aside, what gravitates us to this bull is the cow power in both the top and bottom of his pedigree. The paternal dam Tibbie 124F is arguably one of our favorite cows at Remitall Farms. She is the definition of a perfect brood cow, from body mass to udder quality, she has a lot going in her favor. On the bottom side of Torrent’s pedigree you’ll find 3 generations of current donor cows. You could say he’s got a stacked lineup! We had fun exhibiting him last fall where he grabbed the attention of many astute cattlemen. He was Bull Calf Champion at Olds Fall Classic, Lloydminister Stockade, and Farm Fair International. Radius 134K is a flush mate to Wilbar Juncture 45J, the 2022 Canadian Show Bull of the Year. All sale cattle will be penned immediately north of the sale barn and will be available for viewing prior to the sale.

Terms

Payment due at the time of purchase. The right of property shall not pass until settlement has been made. All cattle sell under the standard terms and conditions of the Canadian Angus Association. All information in this catalogue is the most current available at press time. Any announcements made sale day supersede catalogue information.

Each animal becomes the risk of the purchaser at the point of sale.

Wilbar Cattle Co. reserves the right to collect semen on any bull for in-herd use only, at the seller’s expense and buyer’s convenience.

Scrotal circumference, ultrasound data and current weights will be available sale day.

All bulls will be semen tested and fully guaranteed. Bulls may remain at Wilbar Cattle Co. until May 1, 2023.

Bulls will be delivered to your yard or central points in Western Canada.

Wilbar Cattle will also provide assistance with trucking to Eastern Canada and the U.S.

All heifers will be palpated for breeding soundness. Please make arrangements to pick up heifers before April 1, 2023.

Commercial Heifers

Due to the extremely dry conditions over the past few summers we decided to disperse our commercial herd and instead we have focused on our ET program but, as we all know, not 100% of embryos stick. As a result, some of the commercial heifers on offer are a bit older than past years (they are the natural calves of recipients and can not be registered) but they are of the same quality and all straight Angus or Red Angus. The oldest heifers in this group are born in late January with the bulk of the heifers born February 20 to March 15. Buy with confidence.
