NOTE FROM THE EDITOR What's up, Texas Oklahoma?

It's your girl, Vivian, back at it again with another Tex-O-Key. It has been an amazing 3 months since the term has started and I am impressed with all the great content I have received.

The newsletter participation

rate for May was 16.1%! In the last Tex-O-Key, our goal for May was 15% and I am ecstatic that you guys broke that goal. The newsletter participation rate for June was 15.2%. Unfortunately, we dropped by around 1% from May but that's completely okay. I am pushing you all to reach 20% for the July submission due August 5th, and I expect every month after July to stay above 20%. If you guys recall my caucusing speech, I stated that my goal was 90% for the year. Imagine how cool it would be if we actually got there.Â

If you follow my remind (text @toedit to 81010) or received my update from your LTG, you would know that I have released two YouTube videos on making newsletters! If you have any video requests, please email me and I would be happy to make them. The links to these videos are listed below:

HOW TO GET A 21/21 ON MONTHLY NEWSLETTERS!! (CANVA) HOW TO MAKE YOUR NEWSLETTER LOOK SUPER CUTE ;) Also, I wanted to try something new. Since I have been grading your newsletters, I wanted to reverse it and have you grade mine! I sent out a Google forms a couple of days ago through the Remind app asking for suggestions on the June Tex-O-Key. I incorporated your advice into this edition, and I am now releasing a Google forms for your feedback on this one! I will continue to do so every month now, so that I can get your honest feedback and improve these newsletters. Click the link below to grade!

TEX-O-KEY AUGUST FEEDBACK Since I want to keep it real with you guys, here are the most common suggestions that I received for the June Tex-O-Key! Hopefully you all agree and like this edition more. There is too much information crammed on one page, especially on the officer pages. The emails of the officers should be included where their pictures are. There is WAY too much green.

I'm also working on the Jolly Book of Insight, an all encompassing guide for editors. I'm going to try my best to release this before the end of August. Furthermore, I am having an Editor Training through Zoom (see next page for additional details). Please keep checking my remind messages and asking your LTGs to send updates from the staff so that you will be in the loop when the Editor Training date/time is announced. Yours in Service,

Vivian Thai

LETTER TO THE EDITOR Cypress Woods Key Club D3N: Based on your experiences, what do you believe is the best way to delegate your time and resources to create the ideal newsletter?

RIDDLE OF In my opinion, the best way to delegate your time and resources into creating the ideal newsletter is to plan. Before I create a newsletter, I create an outline on what I am planning to do. In regards to resources, I like to incorporate elements from other

INTERNATIONAL TRUSTEE UPDATE Hello Texas-Oklahoma District,

My name is Alexis Henry and it is my pleasure to be your new International Trustee. I was elected at this year’s Key Club International Convention in Baltimore, Maryland along with the rest of the 2019-2020 Key Club International Board. For those of you that I had the pleasure of meeting at ICON, I just want to say the support you showed me was inspiring and an example of why I love this organization so much. Since then, I attended LEADcon, which is a conference with all 33 District Governors, 11 International Trustees, and the International President and Vice President. There, we were paired into sister districts, received training on international duties, proposed policy changes, and got to know one another on both a personal and professional level. LEADcon was a great start to the year and showed me just how much work we still have to do.

This year’s goals focus on involvement, growth, an impact. First, I would like to increase the involvement of each district in the international stage of the organzanization. Key Club is going through a lot of changes and I am here to voice the opinions of my districts to the Key Club and Kiwanis International Boards so we can be truly “student led”. This would also include participation with our Preferred Charities and Partners that can be found on the website. I am also here to help each district grow. Not just in membership, but in service hours, DCON and ICON attendance, and so much more. Within the next two months, I will be releasing a Membership Growth and Retention Plan to help clubs in these areas. I hope to be an ally in any way possible to help with DCON and ICON as well as other areas needed. Lastly, we are going to strengthen our impact as an organization. Key Clubbers are responsible for MILLIONS of service hours completed each year and that number is only increasing. I’m not just focused on increasing the hour count, but having more meaningful service. It’s important that we take time to serve the communities we live in, which can mean anything from buying a meal for a homeless citizen, to raising enough money to build a well for those in another country. Whatever the size of the project, I want to make sure we maximize the impact to help as many as possible.

This year as your Trustee, I want to be a resource, ally, leader, and friend. So if you think of anything you would want to talk to me about don’t be shy! My information is down below Yours in Service and Friendship, Alexis Henry 2019-2020 Key Club International Trustee Ohio, Kansas, and Texas-Oklahoma Districts Public Relations Committee Chair

HE DISTRICT STAFF What is up TO?

ASHNA PATEL

It’s your District Governor, Ashna Patel. I hope summer is treating y’all

governor

well. To start off this letter, I want to congratulate you all for making my three months as a District Governor better than good. We as a district increased our monthly report submissions as well as newsletter submissions and I hope that we continue to do so throughout the year. As I ran for District Governor, I explained my Governor’s Project, Culture4Caring. My sophomore year, I attended a social where we wrote letters for communities going through hard times, and at that time, I thought to myself how we as Key Clubbers can make a bigger impact in our communities. In my hopes of serving our home, school and communities, I wanted to ensure that our schools included a caring environment. The vision set by students was, “together as students, we will create a culture for caring so that every student feels part of a

caring community. This past year, Culture4Caring made an impact in

District Governor

Klein ISD, and this year, I want it to impact all the schools within Texas and Oklahoma.

TOgether in service, Ashna Patel

Hey T-O Key Clubbers! I hope you are enjoying your last few weeks of summer before we start school! I have seen tremendous leaps of improvement in these past few months in monthly reports and club activity. Currently, I am working on the latest edition of the Jolly Book of Wisdom (guide book for club secretaries). This will include step by step information on submitting a monthly report, taking minutes, resources available for secretaries, and more! I should have this edition published on the website by the end of August, so club secretaries, please be on the lookout! I have also made a new reporting tutorial, so please refer to that if you have any questions. There are many resources that have been uploaded to the district website under secretary resources for your use. I have published the finalized points system which is also found under the resources tab. Recently there was an online training held for secretaries, and I had 48 club secretaries attend who got trained over all their duties! As school starts back, continue

Kareena Patel

to submit your monthly reports to me, and if you have any questions or

concerns, please feel free to contact me! I look forward to continuing to serve with you this year, and let’s make this a better than good year!

DISTRICT PROJECT: KEY READERS COURTESY OF LTG KASANDRA SCHROEDER DIVISION 8

The Texas-Oklahoma Key Club District Project KEY Readers. We strive to increase students' love for reading as well as support programs that combat illiteracy.

HOW YOU CAN SUPPORT THE DISTRICT PROJECT Shelve books at your local library. Join the library's teen advisory board where teens help plan or volunteer at events. Host a book drive and suggest students bring a used or new book. Stock books at your Kiwanis's Little Library if they have one. If not, suggest building one! Talk to local elementary or middle schools about reading to their students. You can even plan a weekly or biweekly time so that your club can regularly visit the schools. Have a pen-pal relationship with elementary or middle school students where you talk about books! Start a book club. Compile a list of books to read and students can vote on a book to read each week. Encourage students to participate in reading challenges, such as the summer reading challenges at your local library!

Saving JASMINE

Hi, my name is Jasmine Nguyen and I am a proud member of Cypress Ridge Key Club. Even though Key Club is one of the best and most organized clubs in Cypress Ridge, I feel like some changes could be made. Now, you might not love what I’m about to say, but I think it will really up the club’s reputation and will benefit the community even more. After all, Key Club is about helping the community. Taking notes from Interact, Key Club should worry about the environment more, and should organize more events that involve cleaning up the Earth, or just keeping our home clean.

Over the past few decades, we have developed a lot, and although our developments have been extremely helpful and have made our lives easier, they are also slowly —well not that slowly—killing the planet. The amount of pollution in our planet has increased by so much that it is almost unbelievable. As more factories are being built, and as countries are developing, air pollution has risen, therefore, leading to global warming. In addition to air pollution. As humans, we have become more wasteful, we use something and once we’re finished with it, we throw it

RIDGE

HIGH

SCHOOL

away. This has led to Earth becoming a toxic planet and dangerous for the animals inhabiting it.Â

As a club, we can help fix this problem. Even though Cypress Ridge Key Club is just one small group, every bit of help counts. For example, Key Club can participate in Crayola’s marker program and help recycle them. We can do so by collecting old markers at our school and the schools around us, then sending them to Crayola for them to recycle or fix and reuse. As a community, we can really make a change and help make Earth a better home. Key Club could also help out by picking up trash and cleaning up our planet. If other Key Clubs participate, too, we could help make the future a safer environment for our kids, grandkids, and the animals.

In conclusion, I feel that Key Club should become more involved in the environment and help clean it. This way, the people in our community will be able to live and a clean, pollution free environment. I believe that by helping the environment, we can really give a new meaning to Key Club. Not only will we be about community, but we will also represent a safe environment.

LAUREN ROSS IP LTG D40W " This was my second year attending international convention and I have to say it was one of the best experiences I have had on a trip! Convention is filled to the brim with some of the most genuine and amazing people you will ever meet, and I still talk with my friends I made last year even though they are all over the country right now.

9102 NOCI

Pin trading is an intense but rewarding experience (ask how many ICON goers traded for a coveted coke bottle or Carolina Key). I think overall, competitors elections, pin trading, and getting to travel somewhere new aside - what makes convention so wonderful is getting to stay with a group of people who not only value key club, but are the best examples of who our future leaders are today right now. They are people leading each other in service to their homes schools and communities and that much brain power in one place can help create some life changing ideas. "

ADDI DUERKSEN IP DISTRICT GOVERNOR " ICON 2019 was the perfect ending to my membership in this organization. All of my favorite parts of this organization took place during our few short days in Baltimore: passionate debates during House of Delegates, celebrating a fantastic year of service, countless memes, forums, and of course, fellowshipping with friends from across the globe. I was so humbled to receive the honor of Distinguished District Governor, and I was so incredibly proud of the past Outstanding Lieutenant Governors that were recognized. Though I’m sad to say that I am officially no longer a Key Clubber, I’m so thankful that I got to spend my last few days in this organization surrounded by my best friends! I won’t forget this convention for a very long time!"

40

LTG D12/22

"ICON was a phenomenal experience! I learned so much at the convention how to conduct service projects around March of Dimes, how to become a better lieutenant governor, and more importantly the art of pin trading. Pin trading is an iconic part of ICON (pun intended hehehe). Our groovy T-O vans were loved this year. People couldn’t keep their hands off of them! Pins just like money have different value depending on the type of pin they are. Some of the best pins I brought home this year are an anchor from the Florida District, an Aruba owl, and a coke bottle from the Georgia District. However, some pins are only high in value because of their hype, not because they are actually an aesthetically pleasing pin. An example of a hyped up pin is the Carolinas’ Key. Aside from pin trading my favorite part of ICON was meeting a plethora of people from all across the country, RaeLyn from Kansas, Maren from Utah, Ryan from Idaho, and the list goes on!

Although ICON was good, the district tour was better than good. The trip to Washington DC blessed me with cultural enlightenment and brought me closer to America as a whole. I walked along the National Mall and thought about how my feet have never before tread upton a place with such historic value. The memorials were breathtakingly massive all I could do was bask in their presence. The World War Two memorial was my favorite, it was an all encompassing curve with a pillar that represented every state. I, of course, got my picture next to the one with “Texas” etched in. In D.C. we had to walk to get everywhere and had many run-ins with the locals. The people we met were neither good, nor bad. They were simply fascinating. We walked along the street with a tycoon and were screamed at by a vagabond. And although I can relay my experience I cannot truly convey how this experience has affected me, nor how my newly acquired

knowledge will impact the future of my life. Frankly, it was a life changing trip. "

41

LORENA FONSECA LTG D1 " I can't even begin to express the feelings I have held since I went to ICON. The reason I was able to go was because of the placement of my club's scrapbook at DCON. I felt going there was a privilege I was granted thanks to my fellow members, as well as our late member who worked very hard on the scrapbook. Going was a way of honoring him and his hard work, and it was very emotional for my

9102 NOCI

members and I. Throughout the trip, I made friends with key clubbers from all over the United States as well as some from Jamaica. They were all amazing in their own ways and I feel we'll stay connected through our love of service(as well as Snapchat). Being able to travel outside of Texas for the first time to not only one, but two places was incredible! It was great to get a change of scenery and have my life set at a different pace. There were many more "firsts" for me after that. Through activities, my bond with my club members who got to go as well as with some of my fellow district staff members grew stronger. This trip will forever stay close to my heart and I will never stop being grateful to the ones who made this possible!"

ASHNA PATEL DISTRICT GOVERNOR "Wow! ICON was ICONic. From pin trading with the most passionate pin-traders to meeting so many servant leaders to caucusing some very dedicated Key Clubbers to changing our Key Club pledge for the first time in Key Club history. Not only that but Culture 4 Caring got recognized as 1st place Platinum Division Single Service Project. All these memories and so much more make me realize who I am and why I do what I do. Throughout the weekend, I got to see the Interantional point of view on so many issues. My experience at ICON was tiring yet memorable. Tiring because of attending International Council meetings before opening sessions to attending I-council breakfasts at 6:00 in the morning all the way to presenting forums everyday. And memorable because I got to do all that with the amazing immediate past Texas Oklahoma *Distinguished* District Governor, Addi Duerksen, and Convention Liaison Dillion Grisham. ICON was ICONic, but Texas Oklahoma DCON is something else."

42

CONVENTION LIAISON "To say ICON was amazing would be an understatement, it was amazing! When kids say ICON is a one and a lifetime experience, it really is. You meet people from all around and get to hear what they do as a District. We stayed on the harbor in Baltimore so we got to see everything. During ICON we got to trade pins, go to informational forums, and collaborate with others like I said before. After ICON, T-O went to DC to tour and that was breathtaking and very emotional. We got to see the Ford's theatre, White House, Lincoln Memorial and many more. Overall ICON was amazing and something that will stick with me for a lifetime. "

SARAH SPIVEY IP LTG D8 " This early July, a group of Texas-Oklahoma Key Club members and various mentors traveled cross country to represent. When our district cries, whatever it takes, we mean business. Nothing short of this strong motto arrived in Baltimore, Maryland where the International Convention commenced shortly before our nation’s annual celebration of independence. What is Key Club International Convention? An adventure. An experience. An opportunity.Â

While at International Convention, fellow members, mentors, and I traveled around the city in style; we literally traveled nonstop on Lime-type scooters. While my collection of souvenirs from this trip did include several ankle bruises as a result, these scooters unlocked a whole world of adventure. We sped and pedaled through these charming streets full of history, discovering the grave of Edgar Allen Poe and glancing at the world-renowned

Constellation which is docked in the Baltimore Harbor waiting to welcome its visitors. During this travel, my heart pounded while I was simultaneously thrilled at the creative culture around me and

43

SARAH SPIVEY IP LTG D8 (cont.) the impending threat of curbs everywhere. Key Club ICON unlocked a world where I could step past my comfort boundary and truly be adventurous.

After Baltimore, the group hopped on a train to the glorious Washington, D.C., a world full of wonder, especially as I dream to

9102 NOCI

work here soon. This trip allowed me to experience our nation’s wonders, full of museums, monuments, and memorials representing the nation’s achievements which have brought us to this point. From the old gem of the National Museum of Natural History to the new, shiny Spy Museum to the heartwrenching Holocaust Museum, these experiences and more taught us of the wonders of the past to inspire innovation today. I truly appreciate all the places our group enjoyed and cannot wait to return to continue learning. These experiences were even more impactful because I was surrounded with people who shared my passion for service, for our conversations largely revolved around ideas to contribute growth to the people around us as inspired by what we were learning in the moment. Memories with Key Club like these last a lifetime.

Back at ICON, T-O met new, interesting people from around the world, many from Bahamas and Jamaica. They were such incredible individuals; we share so much more in common than our cultural or geographical differences may suggest, most significantly our passions for service and community. International Convention opened the opportunity to learn more about others, an important concept when creating a culture of inclusiveness in our communities.

I am grateful for each adventure, experience, and opportunity that this trip, our district, and Key Club International enables for my peers and me during this lifechanging week. ICON allows members from all backgrounds to do new things, see new places, and meet new people. Consider this amazing event that will broaden your perspective, take you to new places, and deepen your passion for service. "
