NOTE FROM THE EDITOR Hey there T-O Key!

My name is Vivian Thai and I am so excited to serve you all as the 2019-2020 District Editor. Many of you don't know me so allow me to briefly introduce myself. I'm a rising junior and my home club is in Division 2C. In my free time, I like to play the piano and shop for cute stationery. I love to bullet journal as well! Alright, back to business.

đ&#x;˜Š I have been grading all

your submissions and I commend you guys on a job well done! However, newsletter participation this past month was ONLY 9.7%. We can do better than that! The goal for May is 15% and since many clubs are becoming more settled in, I am looking forward to meeting this goal.

Some updates that I have in the works right now include the Jolly Book of Insight (an all encompassing editor guide) and YouTube videos (how-to Canva)! I will have both of these resources completed by the end of July so please be on the lookout. Additionally, I am revising the points system as well as the rubric. If you submitted any assignment this past month, you should have received a rubric for that assignment. I sent out an email on May 21Â with information regarding the new points system to all LTGs, so if you have not seen this update, please reach out to your LTG. Always feel free to send me an email at editor@tokeyclub.com if you want any rubrics or have any questions. Once the system is finalized, you will be able to access it under Editor Resources on tokeyclub.com.

As I am typing this, I am still in school! For everyone in the same situation who has not started their summer, hold on tight. The school year is coming to a close while this Key Club chapter is just beginning. I hope you guys find this Tex-O-Key informative and interesting! Now, let's do "whatever it takes" to keep serving our home, school, and community. Have a lovely (and service filled) summer, Key-uties!

Yours in Service,

LETTER TO THE EDITOR Sembree Yeary from Mansfield Legacy D39S: How do you feel the editor can

Vivian Thai

have the most impact on their club, their members, and their community?

RIDDLE OF I believe editors are crucial to a club's success because their newsletters are a vessel for communication between the club and the district board. The TexO-Key is a great way to update clubs in an organized way and the newsletters that club editors publish are a great way to update members! In regards to the community, editors can feature issues that arise within the community surrounding their club and raise awareness to problems that can

MESSAGE FROM OUR INTERNATIONAL TRUSTEE Hello Texas-Oklahoma!

It's about that time of year! No, I'm not talking about AP exams, graduation, or even the beginning of summer. I'm talking about the Key Club International Convention! It may still be about one month away, but that time will soon come! At convention, which will be in Baltimore, Maryland this year, we will be attending workshops, passing amendments, trading pins, meeting Key Clubbers from around the world, touring Baltimore, and electing our 2019-2020 International Board! I hope that you have the chance to be there and I can't wait to meet all who decide to come! Speaking of the International Board, recently we have been working hard to prepare for International Convention, or ICON. In preparation, we have kickstarted our candidates mentorship program, given out cryptic hints for a theme release (it's reality TV themed!), made promo videos, and are working on preparations for various workshops. Along with this, we have each been working in our designated committees, my committees happen to be the committees on Leadership and Membership Experience. For the Leadership Committee, we have made videos going through Distinguished District Officer Awards and are working on making a composite resource about each of our 33 districts! For the Membership Experience Committee, we have just finished up presentions for the Governors and Administrators Training Conference and have been working on a few details about ICON. On top of this, in the past few months, I had the privilege of attending the Missouri-Arkansas, Bahamas, and of course, Texas-Oklahoma District Conventions!Â

If you have any further questions, concerns, wanna talk, or snarky comments, please free to reach out to me at leslietruong.kci@gmail.com, or (910)750-9038!

With an Undying Passion, Leslie Truong

CONCESSIONS UNDER THE RAIN BY YAZMIN MENJIVAR UPLIFT SUMMIT INTERNATIONAL PREPARATORY D39S

During the early morning of April USIP

13th, at Six Flags Hurricane Harbor the annual Cardboard Boat Regatta was happening. Despite the pouring rain of that morning members still showed up, two members participated in the concession stands. The members got an amazing experience seeing all the happy faces from receiving their fresh hot chocolate. The experience was also enhanced by the new experience of volunteering at a waterpark. The different atmosphere made it an

There were three volunteers positioned in each post, the two members who showed up got to interact with the other volunteers and learn communication skills. Each volunteer had their own job which was organized and fun.

During the time of intermission, the three concession stands were filled with hungry customers. Coupons began flying everywhere while others were trying to make the nachos and hotdogs. The lines were getting longer and longer due to hunger. The weather was also perfect for a nice cup of coffee or hot chocolate, due to this the hot chocolate was running low and that became a problem with the

USIP

customers. Due to the flooding of USIP

people it was difficult to restock on items.

The event didn’t end up lasting very long due to the inconvenience of the storm. Shifts lasted slightly longer though even if the concessions were low on material. Once it was 11 am people began closing their section of the concessions and were getting to go home. Once they finished they went outside and viewed the event for themselves, seeing all the different structures of the boats and colors selected by the teams. Eventually everyone was drenched in rain, but even then they kept smiles on their faces. Even though the rain caught up with the Key Club members it didn’t change the enjoyment of the event.

MY DCON E

BY SALMA JENKS HIGH S

HOW IT STARTED

I found out that I was going to DCON a full a day before I went to DCON. This was because another member had to back out at the last minute, so there was an open spot for another member. On a whim, I decided that I would be the one to fill that spot, and it turned out to be well worth it! Once we got there, it was a bit awkward for me and, being my first time at DCON, I was lost when it came to how the convention worked, and what exactly we did there. That changed quickly.

WHAT I GAINED

Jenks

By Sunday, I felt much closer to my key club officers and gained a much more thorough idea of how Key Club operated within our District. I bonded with my Key Club as well as Key Clubs from other schools. Not only did I make new friends, but I also got to participate in interesting and engaging workshops where we learned how to

Jenks

improve our clubs at home. In addition to this, we voted for a new District Board that would oversee all the school clubs within Texas and Oklahoma. This is a very important job in Key Club, meaning that the schools had to make a very important decision. The practice of voting for board members was very interesting as we got to see all the ideas candidates had for the upcoming year of service, ideas that we could use to improve Jenks.

THE MEETINGS

A final thing I really enjoyed at DCON were the meeting themselves, which were held in a very large, amazingly decorated hall. Here, we listened to speaker Keith Hawkins who not only entertained us, but taught us about being thankful. It was… better than good! They also gave schools awards, in which Jenks was got fourth best school out of 349, earned a diamond level distinction, earned the title of Distinguished Website, and had two scholarship recipients). There was also many competitions, including Quiz Bowl between Texas and Oklahoma, where two Jenks students were in finals, contributing to Oklahoma’s overall win. In addition to this, there was a talent show, oratory competition, and even a Super Smash Bro’s tournament! This fostered friendly competition between clubs and created a sense of community for the district.

IN THE CITY

While at the convention, we decided to explore the city of Dallas. Walking around the Arts District was incredible, especially the giant sculpture of the eyeball, moving spoon sculpture, and more! We visited Campisi’s, one of the best Italian restaurants I’ve ever been to. We even visited Dealey Plaza, the site where former president John F. Kennedy was assassinated. Seeing all this beautiful art, eating lots of tasty food, and visiting historic sites was a very enjoyable part of our trip.

CONCLUSION

Overall, DCON was very fun and interesting, and I learned a lot. I made friends, heard about other people’s ideas, found out ways to improve my club, discovered more about how Key Club worked on the District level, got to explore Dallas, and I had a blast!

KEY CLUB BY DEFINITION BY MIA SILAS CYPRESS FALLS HIGH SCHOOL D3N

It’s the end of April and the school year is ending soon, but of course, that doesn’t mean the volunteering stops. This school year has flown by fast and we’ve reached the last article of the year. Overall, this year has made the greatest impact on me, whether it was school related or in my personal life. In regard to Key Club, I feel like I’ve been more involved this year than in previous years since I’ve become a Historian. This year I’ve been able to express my feelings, thoughts and make comments

VOLUNTEERING BY MADELINH VO CINCO RANCH HIGH SCHOOL D3W

Volunteering is an entity that offers assistance to those in need, environmental problems, and the community. Giving assistance to these tasks, whether directly or indirectly, can make a huge difference in the lives of many beings that reside on this Earth. As a result, volunteers gain many benefits as a reward for their hard work ethic, such as, creating deep bonds with other people, gaining advances on future occupations, and bringing fulfillment in life.
