his month we’ve been celebrating the summer and enjoying the incredible response we had to our launch issue! We also had an absolute ball at me&i’s AW17 launch and completely fell in love with their new range. We delved deep into the horrifying world of the use of chemicals in lipsticks and reassured ourselves by discovering some of the top natural

alternatives. We also indulged in some beautiful conditioners to give you the low-down on the best chemical-free options on the market and were captivated by Amy Brown’s book. We got experimental in the kitchen and knocked up some seriously tasty savoury scones and explored the latest releases in the world of natural beauty, ethical fashion and parenting. Our feature on greener motoring really got me thinking. Claire Robilliard’s expert skincare

LIP SERVICE

On average, a woman will apply 9lbs of lipstick during her lifetime a shocking 30 per cent of which will be ingested. With the majority of lipsticks being packed full of toxic metals and carcinogens, we need to consider more than colour...

I

t’s not just the chemicals that are off-putting. Sperm whale excrement, ground fish scales and snail slime are included amongst the blend of pesticides, heavy metals and synthetics. So why do we apply chemical-laced products to our mouths? Where did our beauty ideal of coloured lips stem from? Which ingredients do we need to steer clear of and what are the alternatives? The first records of adding colour to lips dates back 5,000 years when ancient Sumerian people would use crushed

12

September 2017 NMM

gemstones to adorn their faces (predominantly on the lips and around the eye area). In ancient Egypt, lipstick did not signify gender, but was linked to social status. Cleopatra was known to redden her lips using crushed bugs. The dye they used (formed from fucus-algin, iodine and bromine mannite) caused severe illness. An iridescent quality was added by the use of fish scales. Solid lipsticks only came into play during the Islamic Golden Age, invented by the cosmetologist Abu al-Qasim al-Zahrawi. These

perfumed sticks were described in his notable work, Al-Tasrif. In 16th century England, the application of makeup was restricted to male actors and upper class ladies. Powdered white faces provided the perfect contrast to the scarlet lips that were so fashionable at the time. The Elizabethan lipstick was reassuringly natural, formed from red plant extract and beeswax. By the 19th century, in England, makeup was branded uncouth due to associations with actors and prostitutes. In 1850, the dangers of

NMM September 2017

13

applying lead and vermillion to the skin were recognised. Lipstick had been something that had always been made at home, but by the end of the 19th century Guerlain were manufacturing silk paper wrapped commercial lipsticks using beeswax, castor oil and deer tallow. By 1921, the use of lipstick in portrait photography led to it becoming an acceptable and fashionable beauty product in everyday life. Elizabeth Arden and Estée Lauder started selling lipsticks in their salons. During this time, dark red shades were the most popular and came to represent the independence of the flappers of the era. It was Elizabeth Arden who revolutionised the use of different lip colours in the 1930s. Lipstick was seen as a symbol of adult sexuality, and teenagers used it as a sign of rebellion. By

14

September 2017 NMM

the 1940s the general consensus was that men preferred a more natural look. Lipstick was once again associated with prostitution and magazine articles at the time suggested that lipstick could have a detrimental effect on a woman’s career and reputation. Actresses such as Marilyn Monroe and Elizabeth Taylor reclaimed the glamorous red lipstick look. Manufacturers pushed things further and started to produce more wearable everyday lipsticks in shades of peach, pink, lavender and white. These colours revolutionised the world of lipstick, making it more accessible for teenagers. By the 1960s lipstick was so acceptable that women who didn’t wear it were assumed to be gay or mentally ill! The 1970s opened up the colour palette even more with experimental shades of violet, navy blue and lime greens

taking centre stage. Black lipstick also saw its way onto the street (previously only seen on actresses in 1950’s horror films) and stayed until well into the 90s. The 1980s saw colour-changing mood lipsticks, and the 90s were more conservative with a fashion for muted neutrals and browns. In recent years pearlescent finishes, longlasting formulas, a whole spectrum of shades (from vibrant to nudes) and a range of applications have opened up the world of lipsticks. Fortunately, there is a wide array of lipsticks and cosmetics that avoid the use of synthetic ingredients and cut out chemicals. Using natural products not only lowers the risk of a variety of health issues, but they also offer some wonderful results. The natural alternatives are gentler on your skin, kinder to your body and much better for the environment.

WHAT’S IN A LIPSTICK?

Products we love...

So how do cosmetic companies get away with packing their lip products with such harmful chemicals? The FDA (Food and Drug Administration) are only legally required to approve colour additives and not the whole cosmetic product. The basic ingredients in a lipstick tend to be the same; wax, oil, preservatives, antioxidants, colour and fragrance. When purchasing a lip colour, you’ll want to avoid: Methylparaben – a common preservative. Restricted in the EU but popular in the US. Linked to cancer, disrupted endocrine function and toxicity. Labelled as “high hazard” by the Cosmetics Database.

Origins KissZing Peonies In A Pod

Propylparaben – another preservative. Commonly used in cosmetics. Can lead to skin irritation and allergic reactions. Research also indicates a link to cancer and endocrine disruption. Labelled as a “moderate hazard” by the Cosmetics Database. Retinyl Palmitate – a synthetic form of vitamin A that is associated with cancer, toxicity in pregnant women and a number of health complaints associated with the reproductive organs. Colourants (eg. D&C Red 36 and D&C Red 22 Aluminium Lake) – typically tested on animals. Studies show a correlation between exposure to these colourants and damage to the nervous system, as well as other health complaints.

Obsessive Compulslve Lip Tar in Vintage

Tocopheryl Acetate/vitamin E acetate – A common ingredient in lipsticks, foundation and skin creams. Can cause burning, itching, hives and blisters, and is toxic in some cases. Propylene/Butylene Glycol (PG) – PG is used in cosmetics as it works as a humectant (slows moisture loss). It keeps skin supple and reduces flaking. It is also found as an ingredient in fertiliser and in automotive coolants and antifreeze. Linked to infertility and irritation to the eyes and skin. Lead – Despite the historical evidence highlighting the dangers of the use of lead in cosmetics, it is still used as a colourant. Red lipsticks contain the most harmful amounts of lead, which is especially harmful to pregnant women and infants. Lead ingestion can cause behaviour abnormalities and brain damage. Its side effects tend to be irreversible. Mineral Oil – Helps to prevent moisture loss. Can also lead to blocked pores and disruptions in skin cell development and function. Can also contain PAHs (Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons) which are carcinogenic. Coal Tar – Used as a colourant and to treat skin conditions, it is also considered “high hazard” by the EWG (Environmental Working Group). This carcinogen has associations with infertility and skin irritation.

Top Tips

for Better Skin

1

from Claire Robilliard of The Better Wellbeing System www.bewellsys.co.uk

Thorough cleansing in the morning will reduce breakouts radically by removing excess sebum and sweat. Always cleanse at night. If you do happen to fall asleep in your makeup then double cleanse in the morning.

2

Remove hard water residue to see improvements in eczema, acne & dehydrated skin. You’ve seen what the limescale does to your kettle and pots! Spritz an essential oil water over the skin after cleansing.

3

Skip the exfoliator! Buff the skin instead with a soft cloth (bamboo ideally) or konjac sponge for smooth yet resilient skin.

4

Pat serums and moisturisers onto your face and neck to use less product and to improve skin tone by increasing the production of elastin.

5

Gently tap eye products around the eye contour to aid circulation without blocking your tear duct. Use your ring finger when applying products to the delicate eye area, as our weakest finger it causes less damage.

6

To ease eye puffiness and dryness place chilled potato slices on your eyes, they won’t go limp like cucumber and are loaded with the powerful antioxidant enzyme superoxide dismutase.

7

Ease a stressed skin with chamomile tea that’s been chilled in the fridge - soak a muslin and apply as a compress.

8

Include aromatherapy oils in your skincare routine for a beautifully aromatic ritual that takes care of your skin while providing relaxation benefits.

9

Swap coconut oil (a highly saturated fat) for melted shea butter or safflower oil on your body. Shea butter is great on cracked heels too.

10

Wear an SPF30 on your skin all year round, anything higher can cause prickly heat. Reapply every 90 minutes to stay safe in the summer sun.

Savoury Afternoon Tea Goat’s Cheese and Rosemary Scones with Homemade Chorizo and Chilli Jam

I

am a big fan of a quintessentially English high tea, in no small part for the aesthetic of it. If you love the look of crumbly scones piled high with cream and rich red jam then this recipe embraces that effect but with a savoury slant. The surprising combination of rosemary and salty goat’s cheese is perfect and the homemade chorizo jam offers just the right amount of spicy kick. For vegetarians, replace the chorizo with yellow courgette and a dash of smoked paprika for flavour.

Pile your scones high with savoury jam and cream cheese then serve with salad for a hearty lunch dish or alternatively, enjoy alone for a quick snack at any time of day. These scones also taste divine eaten fresh from the oven, generously spread with butter. However you choose to eat them, be sure to have a large pot of tea to hand and break out your prettiest crockery. (Vegetarians might prefer to replace the chorizo with yellow courgette and a dash of smoked paprika for flavour) NMM September 2017

Season with a few good twists of freshly ground pepper and your rock salt. Use a butter knife to gradually work in all of the milk.

Loosely knead the mixture, taking care to not overwork it. Tear the goat’s cheese into chunks and add to the mixing bowl.

Rip the rosemary leaves from the stem and snip into fragments using kitchen scissors. Use a wooden spoon to loosely work the cheese and rosemary into the scone mixture.

Flour your surface and roll out the dough until it is approximately 2cm deep. Cut out 12 scones (lift the cutter straight up without twisting for the best rise).

11

Lay your scones out onto a baking sheet lined with parchment paper, allowing each scone a little space to spread.

13 14

Brush with milk and bake for 15-18 minutes until the scones and beautifully golden.

In the meantime, you can get on with creating your savoury jam. Heat your olive oil in a saucepan.

A GREENE

MOTORIN According to the experts, the future of motoring is electric. But with millions of cars on the roads, each one representing a huge investment from both a material and environmental point of view, is this the only way forward?

T

he age of the internal combustion engine is over, and zero emission vehicles are the only way forward. But what of the vehicles that are already on the roads, giving sound service? Continuing to use the cars and vans that are already here in a considered way has to be part of the solution. It may not be the ultimate green answer, but in a society where so much is readily disposable and wasted, it does feel more responsible. Simply writing off existing vehicles just doesn’t make sense. The evidence that we have become a throwaway society is nowhere more apparent than in the world of motoring. Those who grew up in the 60s and 70s will remember the family car being a highly prized possession to be cherished and nurtured, with Sunday morning rituals of wash and polish, and kids helping with

26

September 2017 NMM

routine maintenance on the drive. Cars became members of the family with characters of their own. How many have fond memories of the first car they were a passenger in - the sounds, the smells, the noise? And how many of us got our first taste of ‘fixing’ things while passing the tools to an oil stained parent or relative? It was great way to learn the value of a useful machine, to treat it with respect and to understand that a little bit of work would be rewarded with (mostly) reliable service. As a nation, we’ve become addicted to buying new cars, and as they pass along the ownership chain - from new, to used, to banger - cars lose value quicker than they ever have before. Completely serviceable ten year old cars have so little value these days, they’re practically given away or scrapped when they

NG

NMM September 2017

could continue to give years more reliable service. The simple fact is that we are being led to believe by the government and other agencies that all old cars are all gross polluters and should be eradicated from our roads. We are constantly being pushed towards more complex and technologically advanced vehicles as the solution to becoming green in our transport needs. Ultra efficient but much smaller conventional engines, hybrids and ultimately, full electric vehicles. Not everyone can afford or even justify the expense of a brand new car. And just because an electric vehicle isn’t producing CO2 and other harmful emissions from an exhaust pipe, it doesn’t mean it’s not contributing to pollution. Most of the UK’s electricity is still produced by burning fossil fuels, mainly natural gas (30 per cent

in 2015) and coal (22 per cent). A further 21 per cent comes from nuclear power stations. Only 25 per cent currently comes from renewable sources, although the government has set targets to produce 30 per cent by 2020 - if you want a fascinating insight into how your power is being delivered at any given moment, www. gridwatch.co.uk is worth a visit. An older car is a great solution to staying mobile but as with anything, be thoughtful and realistic about your needs and use. Many assume that a small car will be the most efficient vehicle to run, but if your use is mostly longer, motorway trips the smaller engine will work hard, not deliver good MPG and will suffer accelerated wear and tear. Therefore running costs will be higher than if you were to run a car more suited to that environment. A bigger turbo diesel will give

excellent MPG and relaxed cruising on high speed roads, but they’re not kind to either people or the environment in urban situations. And be truthful with yourself. Do you really need to run a car? If it is going to spend most of the time parked up on your drive, and you have access to good public transport, don’t bother. Nothing kills a car quicker than lack of use. Do yourself a favour - catch the bus, walk or cycle. An older car doesn’t necessary mean using a ‘classic’ for everyday use. To those in the know, the cars built around the turn of the millennium were among the best ever produced. Quality in both manufacture and componentry were at all time high, meaning relatively powerful and efficient engines, and many of the mod cons such as power steering and air conditioning that we now take for granted had become

pretty standard fare across the model ranges. They also relied on a limited amount of complex electrics, unlike the current generation of vehicles which have separate ECUs (electronic control units) for pretty much every aspect of the vehicle. It’s these which are prone to failure, and will no doubt in the coming years make the current generation of cars uneconomical to repair and consign an otherwise perfectly serviceable vehicle to the scrap yard. The key is to keep the car in peak condition. Servicing should always be followed to the absolute last detail of the manufacturers guidelines. Things like missed oil changes will accelerate wear in the engine drastically, making them polluting and inefficient, and will ultimately fail. If you enjoy working with your hands, taking care of routine maintenance repairs can be great fun and very rewarding. Buy a Haynes manual, use the internet as a diagnostic tool and find out where your local motor factors is. Not only is it kind to your wallet, it can be great way to teach your children how to appreciate something of value and great use. Working with your hands can be very therapeutic too. For generations the car has given both individuals and families independence and the freedom to travel wherever and whenever they want. We may now well be about to wave goodbye to those freedoms, taken from us in the name of the environment and spiralling costs of ever more complex vehicles. Driving a banger might just be the solution to keep our freedom on the roads.

Don’t be tempted by the quirky or obscure - you‘re looking for reliable transport, not a fashion statement and a million Ford Focus owners can’t be wrong. When you’re searching for a car there will be plenty to choose from, parts availability will be good and the prices will be keen.

Do Your Research

This has never been so easy - type the make and model you’re thinking of into Google and you’ll no doubt find yourself on a forum populated by owners of that exact vehicle. Look for common problems that get discussed, and issues that they’re having to deal with. Then put them on the list of things to look out for and avoid.

History

Look out for a car with history. It needs to have been looked after, so you want a fully stamped up service book or a ream of receipts and invoices for parts and work done. This can have been done at a franchised dealer, an independent garage or even by a handy owner. But ask to see proof, and if it’s gone ‘missing’, walk away.

Make Friends With Your Local Independent Garage

You may be handy with the spanners yourself, but if not, a good local independent garage will be your closest ally when it comes to keeping you on the road at reasonable cost. They may even be happy, for a fee, to come out and check prospective purchases for you.

Love The Imperfections

It may not have a showroom shine, the seats may have started to sag a little and the CD player may have played its last, but always remember, as long as it gets you from A to B safely, you’re cutting costs with every mile - enjoy the fact that you’re saving yourself a pile of cash while doing your bit to save the planet. NATURAL MUMMA’S BOOKSHELF Why Starting Solids Matters by Amy Brown

T

he conflicting commentary surrounding baby weaning can cause a lot of worry for parents. When should babies start solids? How should you approach it? What should they eat? The guidelines can feel like they are constantly changing and we are frequently left overwhelmed by options. This is why the new book from Dr Amy Brown is such a powerful resource. Brown is an associate professor at Swansea University, specialising in breastfeeding and infant nutrition. She provides no nonsense, thoroughly researched advice that uses science to break down the worry surrounding weaning. Amy’s writing style is warm and gentle. As a mother of

three her own experiences come through and you feel supported and encouraged rather than lectured. The scientific background is reassuring, and the depth of knowledge and lack of judgement is refreshing. As well as demystifying the journey through solids, Amy also highlights the importance of encouraging balanced eating habits from an early age in order to foster a lifelong healthy relationship with food. This brilliant book doesn’t only support you through the often confusing first year, but it brings the diet of the whole family into consideration. One of the most refreshing things about Amy’s approach is her interest in the media and

society’s preconceptions of what makes “a good mother” and how this ultmately affects infant feeding habits. As well as this fascinating book, she has also written 40 papers

“Research suggests that spoon-fed babies are more likely to be overweight in later years.”

that delve into the best practicesto support new mothers, especially in regard to infant nutrition. One of the most fascinating insight you can glean from the book is the wellresearched notion that baby-led weaning results in infants who are a healthier weight, more adventurous eaters and healthier overall. In fact, the research suggests that spoon-fed babies are more likely to be overweight or obese in later years.

This is a slim volume, but packed with concise information that cuts through the froth and offers pracical advice on infant nutrition. Amy’s personal stories make the book easy to relate to, engaging and mean that we are drawn in to the author’s voice from the introductory paragraphs. Despite the gentle guidance on nutrition and strategy (that is so beautifully steeped in science) the core theme of this book is how we should follow the baby’ response and let them be lead by intuition. This is a book that will give you the confidence and knowledge you need to wean your child without any drama or worry.
