The city was a grid context and cut by the 101 highway highway. Our policy of this project is to fill the grid system back and turn the empty space of 101 into another urban connection. Besides, we embed vertical farm on this site and use it as the interweaving element. L.A. is a city where a lot people live in a desert climate, sunshine almost all the year and have very limited rain. So, it will be very meaningful to make L.A. a huge city lab of sustainable experiments experiments. We want to give L.A. a sustainable lead to the whole world. We embed a vertical farm in the site in order to reduce food mileage and provide low price organic food to people. There are solar panels and gray water reuse system on the farm tower, it can not only support the farm but also feed feedback to the neighborhood. neighborhood How we do it is that we cover the ground level to make it flat, and we lower the highway level twice deep to reduce the interference to the city. Between the highway and the ground level is infrastruction level and parking space. We rearrange the program on the ground level to link the commercial belt and form a plaza in the middle of the entire area. We set a platform on 30' high above the ground level. The platform extends many tentacles to attend and connect the open spaces scattered on this area. After that, we put several vertical farm towers. It provides not only food and energy but also a spirit and living style of Los Angeles.

The Spirit of Sci-Arc is to learn by walking through the school, which reflects it’s exsisting building type-a linear massing. We want to follow and enhance this behavior. Therefore, we use some linear massing to form the spece and enclose the open space.

In the residential part, we want to make more light getting into the space. So, we splite the massing to make atrium to make the light get deeper. Moreover, we shift the floors gradually to form the atrium as a V shape. In this way, the lower space can get more direct sun light.

This exercise examines two gridded North American urban patterns: Savannah and Lafayette Park by Ludwig Hilberseimer and Mies van der Rohe, and two examples of more organic city formations: Cairo and Lagos, Nigeria. Savannah is based on colonial grid system but has regular open spaces that form small parks, each of them serving a specific neighborhood. These open spaces also serve urban markers. Lafayette Park doesn’t function very well. Because its base unit of design and is the car, it seems poorly equipped to deal with the scale of the body. Cairo and Lagos are both based on centripetal models that were reformed during their respective colonial periods, with new thoroughfares and boulevards connecting or cutting through the pre-colonial fabrics. In the first study Savannah is blended with Lagos, Nigeria. These two cities are very different. Savannah is a typical grid system, in which the intersections are very rigid follow an orthogonal logic. The intersections in Lagos are more field-like, it doesn’t have particular or obvious rule. The Savannah-Lafayette hybrid embeds a central park system within Lafayette to produce urban variety that can still be perceived as a grid system. IDEAL-REAL
