Statement The forming of the urban context is based on the existing territory, something that changes slowly, and human activities, which are changing all the time. Due to the non-stop pace of human activities, the urban context remains in a cycle of perpetual negotiation. Like organic tissue, the city is always in a state of growth, decay, and rebirth.

In the initial forming of a city, people gather according to their habitual behaviors, which are collective ideas. The multiple and collective ideas often made singular. However, in the development of urbanism, master plans are always rigid and lack tolerance and changeability, like a machine. However, when a mechanical system is broken, it forms another context, in which the city can release and breath. Therefore, I would argue that an ideal urban design should be like a coordinating machine that retains flexibility for its users to adapt the city for themselves. In the past, cities like Rome and Paris were driven by politics and symbolic development. Nowadays cities like New York and Los Angeles are driven by economics, like fields of shopping. I think the presentation of the practical urban layout can be derived from fields of shopping. A well function shopping field must contains coordination and flexibility at once, which is the exact ideal, a city should have. Moreover, a shopping field directly represents local habitual behaviors. In order to attend this goal, I will use aggregation as a driving technique to form buildings. In this technique, each social space is seen as a unit for aggregating the city. This technique will be combined with transformation to accommodate and articulate difference.

In summary, I'm going to develop a new urban fabric like an organic tissue by proposing certain rules but still keeping tolerance and changeability. An urban context that keeps growing is a field in which any particular locate can be modified to fit the new activities.

-Urban Fabric: The project site is located in Kaohsiung Taiwan. The site context is in the connecting area of two grid systems of different dimensions. The investigation of shopping fields will be developed as the initial layout to deal with the negotiation of these two grids and come up with a new urban situation. -Building Unit Changing: In terms of the form of buildings, I’m trying to combine technique of aggregation with technique of transformation. Aggregation contains urban rules but lacks articulation in terms of architecture. On the other hand, transformation has fluent space and articulation but is not developed according to an urban rule. So the task I have set for my thesis is to use technique of aggregation to produce overall urban field rules and to use technique of transformation to produce urban variety.

-Urban Fabric: The urban fabric of this project should be evaluated according to the representing of two features. One is the integration of the original grid system and the new field system. The urban fabric should contains the benefit of these two systems, negotiable and coordinated. Secondly, the design should be derived from shopping fields. This derivation should be applied to the project to adapt different program and context. - Building Unit Changing: The figure of architecture should represent aggregation and transformation as one technique. The technique should demonstrate how it forms a new relationship between infrastructure and buildings in terms of urbanism.
Chunk of Block Prototype Each cub represents one room, a minimum undivided space unit. By aggregating rooms, urban and architecture design could be considered at once. As the existing using type, the block prototype is designed as a complex chunk. Among lower floor are retail stores with public traffic system, like metro and light rail. In the middle level are restaurants, big scale stores, and office. In the higher lever are residential units. While it get denser, the arcade is being aggregated among the units. In the middle and higher level, the arcade become semi-public or private open space.
Plan
When it comes into the Field area, the circulation become curve for through public transportation stations, in which the most people gathering, and pass around plazas. It connects individual important nodes and leads people passing by the plaza to enhance the interaction and commercial activities. The intersections in the field area get fewer and the block get larger. Thus, the traffic system becomes simpler and there are more and larger urban open spaces for various activities.
