s l u o S r u O Feeding During our 47 years of service, 2020 was undeniably the most unique Senior Resource Association (SRA) experienced. COVID-19 disrupted what was guaranteed in our lives and in the lives of seniors and compounded our clients’ existing crises while jeopardizing our mission to reach isolated and food-insecure seniors. Within the first month, we added 100 new seniors to our Meals on Wheels program. By September, we were delivering more than 13,000 meals each month to 450 homebound seniors every day. Yet with careful execution of our crisis communication plan and help from heroic volunteers, donors and staff, we overcame obstacles and found new opportunities to serve and engage with those in need.
Last year opened doors for new services like our Grocery Shopping Assistance Program for all seniors and a Restaurant Meal Program for Meals on Wheels clients. 2020 drove a new level of creative engagement by our Board of Directors and staff, aligning with strategic goals to enhance client-centered care and inspire our community. Through neighborhood drives organized by Board members, we collected and delivered essential supplies to seniors throughout Indian River County. Coupled with donations from local businesses, the drives also enabled SRA to open a Food and Essential Supply Pantry for anyone in need. What a testament to the resiliency and generosity of our community! Despite stay-at-home practices, we found creative ways to reach donors and participants. When the 2020 Pro-Am Charity Golf Tournament was cancelled, sponsors graciously left their dollars in place. Unable to resume in 2021, we organized a unique “Raise Your Paddle to Help Feed Seniors in Need” campaign with results helping fill the gap left by both cancelled tournaments. With support from many, we transformed our 16th Annual Bingo Luncheon into a Virtual Musical Bingo Event with 167 participants joining us by Zoom for a fun afternoon raising funds for our major programs. And under the direction of Dr. Jacob Craig, our Silver Tones volunteer choristers performed three virtual concerts, all airing on YouTube, our website, and Facebook. Amidst constant changes and uncertainties, the response from our community and supporters was nothing short of miraculous. We could not have done it without every one of them. I remain humbled and grateful to be leading an extraordinary organization in a beautifully philanthropic community. Karen B. Rose Deigl PRESID ENT/CEO
I’m thankful for Senior Resource Association and their meal program. Without them, I would not have hot meals and daily visits. Even when I was sick with COVID-19, they delivered food to my door and made sure I was OK. —P HYLLIS KE ATING, ME ALS ON WHEELS CLIENT
delivering hope When looking for a silver lining in the darkness and uncertainty of 2020, our Meals on Wheels team found a much-needed spark in Laura and Jim Fitzpatrick. The couple, whose families lived in close proximity along North Carolina’s Outer Banks, met more than 20 years ago after both were widowed. As Laura tells it, “God sent me an angel when he sent Jim my way.” Their joy at being together and their dedication to helping others led the Fitzpatricks to deliver Meals on Wheels in North Carolina. Upon moving to Vero Beach,
Laura and Jim wanted to continue their volunteerism and make a meaningful contribution to the wellbeing of their new community. In spite of health challenges and the ongoing pandemic, the Fitzpatricks faithfully deliver meals every week to homebound seniors who rely on our volunteers for hot daily meals and a brief friendly visit. Like their fellow volunteers, Laura and Jim applauded when SRA received a special grant from Meals on Wheels America to add a new Restaurant Meal Program during

the pandemic. Borne of a desire to offer meal diversity to clients while bolstering our hard-hit local restaurant community, we purchased 450 meals from local restaurants each week for four months for delivery to homebound seniors. Needless to say, our clients loved the extra weekly meal — and so did the Fitzpatricks. So much so that, after the grant concluded in December, Laura and Jim graciously offered to sponsor the extra meal program for 2021.

supplies at businesses during the shutdown, so I suggested we keep it contained within neighborhoods.” The idea took off and SRA put the new “Supplies for Seniors” campaign in motion. Community Coach drivers collected the supplies and delivered them to seniors throughout the county. What started with Dawn in Riomar Country Club quickly spread to other neighborhoods. More than 50 communities and businesses ultimately joined the effort, which also provided enough non-perishable food and supplies to open

OUR COMMUNITY IMPACT 45 years ago, Senior Resource Association had a vision for programs and services that would provide independence for older adults, allowing them to remain in their own homes for as long as safely possible. Today, our mission is fulfilling that vision: Promote independence and dignity in our community by providing services for older adults and transportation for all. The SRA commitment to work hand-in-hand with our community is stronger than ever.
