But it really goes deeper than that, long before his professional career began. Harry is native to South Carolina’s Low Country where extant today are a number of the most splendid examples of Southern Classical domestic architecture. “I must have been an architect in a past life,” he jokingly says in reference to the length of time he has been practicing but alluding to his childhood fascination with nearby antebellum mansions. It was his early exposure to the grand style and reasoned order of these distinguished plantation homes that imbued Harry with an intuitive classical approach to architectural design. “It’s truly second nature,” he modestly says.

Nevertheless, his innate design skills were deftly honed during his professional education at Clemson University and The University of Georgia. He has been further influenced by the architectural philosophies of Vitruvius, a Roman architect during the time of Julius Caesar, whose treatises on architecture have influenced architects from the early Renaissance onward, and of Andrea Palladio, arguably the most influential and one of the greatest Italian Renaissance architects who sought to recapture the splendor of classical antiquity.

It is this point of view and close adherence to the
lessons of classicism that bring to his firm a scope of work that is not only beautifully designed and vernacularly correct, but also the essence of the client’s dreams and wishes. Harry Gandy Howle, Architect & Associates, PA is fully committed to producing its clients’ visions.
“Our business is very detail
oriented, and we pride ourselves on the level of attention given to each job, the documentation we are able to provide, and the hands-on guidance we ensure,” the principal conveys. Perhaps Harry’s highest compliments come in the form of clients coming back for second and third projects.
His firm takes a
sincere interest in its clients and realizes that time spent with them is an invaluable investment that gives surety to the success of each project.

What separates you from your competition? Our multidiscipline approach to design bonds the architecture to the landscape by properly siting a residence and creating a seemingly transparent transition from the indoor spaces to outdoor spaces beyond.
WHEN HE IS NOT WORKING, HOW DOES HARRY SPEND HIS FREE TIME? He and his wife, Claire, enjoy home improvement projects to further enhance their already delightful residences. HOW IS IT OBVIOUS THAT HARRY GANDY HOWLE IS FLORIDA-BASED? Harry decided a long time ago that since clients visited his firm in tennis and golf outfits, they would not mind if Harry and his team dressed in the same fashion. Although the atmosphere is relaxed, the process is anything but lax. WHAT DREW HARRY TO THE FIELD OF ARCHITECTURE? He grew up surrounded by Southern Classical architecture and developed a keen interest at an early age. Harry Gandy Howle, Architect & Associates, PA
