In 1988, Harry G. Howle and his wife, Claire, moved to Vero Beach after finding the place’s allure irresistible. The hope was that Howle could open an architectural firm and, through his work, become a part of the fabric of this community they’d come to adore. Harry Gandy Howle & Associates was born, and it would indeed help guide the design and sustainability of such coveted areas as John’s
Tucked away within the serene splendor of John’s Island, Gem Island is truly adored by those who live there and those who don’t. It is a picturesque example of the lifestyle for which so many move to Vero Beach and a showcase of architectural mastery. And Harry Howle made it so. “I was extensively involved in developing the architectural standards for the Gem Island Architectural Review Committee,” he shares. “Many of the homes there have large porches and verandas that keep within the prescribed styles of French, Georgian and Plantation, but also allow for unobstructed views of water, wildlife and terrain. This was all by design. We ensured that every estate considered the vistas, breezes and sun’s path.”
Island and Orchid Island. The key to success, for Howle and his team, has always been understanding locality and nuance. Whether for a new build or, more often, a careful renovation, they interpret the homeowner’s desires in a way that suits the surroundings, both natural landscape and built neighborhood. Throughout it all, Howle is also focused on the client’s experience. “Anyone who has ever worked with us loves how we value our relationships with them just as much as creating the home of their dreams.”
INFLUENCE IN THE AIR • Weather wise: As in most of Florida, Vero Beach possesses the possibility of hurricanes. Howle’s team creatively finds solutions that meet high-impact and flood-resistant requirements without jeopardizing design. For example, one older home was originally built at 26 feet above sea level. The team excavated 12 feet of sand and created a new, perfectly proportioned lower-level living area. • Exterior outlook: “Outdoor living spaces are vital in Vero, and homes built 30 or 40 years ago didn’t feature them much,” Howle says. “We have become experts at incorporating these additions.”
