Fall is here! ( finally!)

seven acres of inspiration

FALL GARDENING

SUPERTUNIASTM are a sure sign that fall is in the air. This year, we’ve grown two new colors: Blue Skies and Vista Paradise. Rock City has 16 gorgeous colors from which to choose. Perfect for landscapes, container gardens and hanging baskets, Supertunias love the sun and will bring long-lasting color to your home and gardens this winter. And no deadheading required! LIGHT: Full Sun MAINTENANCE: Do not overwater

October marks the start of Florida's dry season. The big storms become fewer and the rains begin to lessen. Fall is finally here and the cooler, dryer weather is just weeks away. The first weeks of the month tend to be as wet as September, but by the end of the month and the start of November we can expect our six-month dry season to begin. And it cannot come fast enough for we Floridians! To welcome the season, here are a few tips for your fall gardening. As the dry season sets in, don’t forget to check your plants for water a few times each week. Now is also the perfect time of year to start a fresh herb garden or replenish your existing one with new varieties. Supplies vary from week to week at Rock City Gardens, but visit often for our wide assortment of fresh, healthy and flavorful herbs like Basil, Onion and Garlic Chives, Coriander, Fennel, Lavender, Marjoram, Mints, Parsley, Rosemary, Sage, and Sweet Marjoram. Plant them in your containers or gardens to use right away and for months to come. No green thumb required!

ALOCASIA varieties, with their foliage color ranging from bright green to dark maroon, provide tropical drama in both containers and the landscape. Some varieties can grow to over 6’ tall. One that we have ready now is “Low Rider” that only grows to about 2’ tall and has beautiful ruffled leaves. LIGHT: Partial Shade MAINTENANCE: Easy!

It’s the perfect time of year to start a fresh herb garden or replenish your existing one with new varieties.

For those of you that had problems with your Bougainvillea blooming during the summer, you don’t have long to wait. Their natural, proliferous blooming time is from November to May. If you feel that you must give them a shot of fertilizer before season, wait until the end of the month and give them one that is high in potash and low in nitrogen. As you likely know, our garden associates were busy growing and nurturing thousands of homegrown plants and flowers this past summer. What might surprise you is that more than 170,000 plants and flowers have been cultivated and grown for your enjoyment. That’s a lot of tender-loving care! From colorful geraniums and crotons to splendid salvia and sunpatiens, these homegrown beauties naturally thrive in our coastal environment and help keep your landscape thriving and stunning.

Refresh your container gardens Refresh and re-energize your container gardens! Your summer flowers and plants are probably spent, so take stock of all your potted gardens in preparation for your trip to Rock City Gardens. Our fresh fall flowers and plants are at their peak of perfection and ready to make a show. Consider grouping your container gardens together in vignettes for a beautiful display – just ensure that the light requirements of the plants match.

NEW GUINEA IMPATIENS grow in 12” to 14” mounds of brilliant color — 13 colors to be exact. Pointed oblong leaves — glossy, dark green, burgundy or variegated — stay attractive throughout the season. The colorful flowers are larger than those of common impatiens. They produce large, showy blooms and few pests, offering low maintenance and high performance. LIGHT: Partial Shade MAINTENANCE: Keep consistently watered

SUNPATIENSTM as their name implies, thrive in the sun and will bloom their heads off throughout the season. They grow fast and in mounds of colorful displays enhanced by deep green leaves, making them a perfect plant for your garden beds or as a stunning poolside container garden. Choose from 12 rich shades. LIGHT: Full Sun to Partial Shade MAINTENANCE: Keep consistently watered

Mental Respite An ever-growing desire to find simple solutions to staying healthy and happy are attracting people of all ages to the benefits of gardening. Your garden can provide a respite from life’s complications while providing great benefits to you and to your family.

We fancy this stunning project as much for its functionality as its beauty. Our Rock City hardscape team met with the homeowners who had recently relocated to Vero Beach from California. The

couple loved their new home but wanted to enhance the landscape and pool area so they could seamlessly enjoy the beautiful coastal weather from the comfort of their home. We re-designed their landscape and planted lush green plants and trees, installed handsome driveway pavers, added new landscape lighting, planted a patio garden within steps of their dining room, and re-designed and installed a beautiful pool area and outdoor dining room.

Whether dining al fresco or enjoying a little pool time with the grandchildren, the outdoor living area draws them into a lush canvas of textures, colors and flowers. The homeowners are not shy about crediting Rock City Gardens for the transformation and admit the new outdoor living area is where they now spend most of their time. Rock City is quickly gaining a reputation for designing and installing beautiful outdoor hardscape areas. For a design consultation, call 772.589.5835.

ASK

What are the benefits of ginger and turmeric, and how can I use them?

A: Cultivated for their versatility, ginger and turmeric are perfect herbs for your Florida garden. Ginger is a tasty addition to Asian dishes, makes a delicious hot tea, and instantly offers a spicy yet sweet aroma. It’s also a natural remedy to soothe an upset stomach! Grow ginger in moist soil with dappled sunlight, and it will stay happy and healthy. Known for its powerful antioxidants, turmeric is a natural anti-inflammatory. Add it to your veggie smoothies, fish dishes, or grate it into rice and soups for an earthy and delicious flavor. It also complements other herbs, so don’t be CLICK TO WATCH
