First Ever Retail Sustainability Report Released The Retail Leaders Industry Association (RILA) has released the first ever industry-wide Retail Sustainability Report. The 2012 report highlights sustainability leadership in the retail industry and discusses retail's environmental, social, and community impacts - impacts within a company's four walls, in the products they sell, and in the broader communities they touch. The report notes that, "For some retailers sustainability was built into their core values from the beginning; for others it has been embraced only more recently. Regardless of its origin, sustainability is becoming a core consideration for the retail industry, affecting strategy, operations, workforce engagement, and connection to consumers and communities." The first of its kind report details how retailers are evaluating their direct store, distribution center, and supply chain operations to uncover cost-saving and workforce-enhancing opportunities. While sustainability programs are reducing energy, greenhouse gases, waste, and chemicals, employees throughout the organization are being empowered to find even more innovations. According to the report, "Retailers understand that sustainability provides a suite of benefits for their business, the communities they operate in, people they touch, and environment we all depend on." Utility companies are seeking innovative ways to implement new demand response programs as a way of reducing the need to build new power generation facilities while avoiding spiraling rate increases. Today, the retail sector seems to be a viable way of making demand response a component of the smart energy demand equation through demand-side management. Until recently though, engaging the retail sector in demand response alone seemed impractical from a very simple reason: retailers cannot cut back on power consumption on demand because shoppers need uninterrupted air conditioning and lighting. So what has changed? Read More

The 2012 award recognizes Lowe's longstanding leadership as a retailer of energy-efficient products. Lowe's received the EPA's most prestigious honor at a ceremony in Washington, D.C., on March 15, which marked the 20th anniversary of ENERGY STAR. Lowe's is the only company to win the Sustained Excellence Award in the retail category since the award's inception in 2004. The company was honored for outstanding achievements year after year in customer outreach, employee training and product selection. Lowe's has now won 10 consecutive ENERGY STAR awards (20032012) for product retailing, more than any other retailer. "To be awarded an ENERGY STAR honor every year for a decade reflects the tremendous dedication and effort of Lowe's employees to help customers save energy and money," said Tom Lamb, Lowe's senior vice president of marketing and advertising.
