The Allure of Hardscapes Bridging the gap between indoors and outdoors It’s no secret that outdoor living spaces are popular in coastal communities like Vero Beach. It’s also more than a passing trend. Homeowners realize these open-air spaces add value to their residences and enhance their lifestyle. While outdoor rooms have long been part of our coastal landscape, the difference today is the impressive advancements in paver options and the creative use of hardscape materials.

This creativity, coupled with professional installation techniques, is precisely why Rock City Gardens successfully diversified their scope of services more than four years ago to include hardscape design and installation. Among the most popular additions are kitchens, fireplaces, garden pathways, and pool decks. Open-air spaces literally and seamlessly blur the lines between indoors and the great outdoors.

“It’s a natural fit,” Wade Baxley, General Manager said. “The spaces we design offer our clients comfortable and unlimited use of their outdoor areas. They’re an extension of the home and a reflection of our clients’ personalities.” Manufacturers are also experimenting with different ingredients to continually update their paver collections. A Belgard manufacturer, Steve Hain with Oldcastle said they experiment with unique ingredients such as glass, shell, marble, and quartz. “Black Beauty,” for example, incorporates quartz, which gives pavers the appearance of black pepper sprinkled throughout.

“Rock City Gardens is unique in how they use our hardscape products,” Steve said. “The different textures and colors of pavers that their team incorporates into each project really sets their work apart from others. It’s a work of art that few installers know how to achieve.” In addition to Belgard’s limited lifetime warranty backed by the Good Housekeeping Seal, Rock City also provides a two-year warranty on all hardscape installations. A few design trends we’re seeing: • Homeowners are opting for more contemporary pavers, including larger units up to 24" x 24" • Natural stone pavers used throughout all applications of outdoor “rooms” • Variegated colors that show less dirt • Segues like pathways and decks that bridge the gap between gardens, outdoor rooms, and the home’s interiors
