Being an inspiration to her son

Shifting gears several years into your career can be difficult. But after ten years in the IT Department at Boeing, that’s exactly what Lesli Barnes wanted to do. To make the move, she needed something that would give her an advantage over the younger competition. Embry-Riddle Worldwide’s Master of Science in Technical Management fit the bill. The degree would distinguish her for both her business acumen and technical expertise. But in order to finish, she had to balance school, a full-time job, and taking care of her family. Sometimes, that meant including them in the process. “When my son was doing his homework, I would do my homework at the same time. I wanted him to see that you don’t have to be a genius; you just have to keep doing your work and keep moving.” And other times, it meant putting off school so she could put them first. When Lesli’s husband started having health problems, she stopped going to school for six months to take care of him. With the support of the Embry-Riddle organization, she was able to hit the ground running when she returned. And she’s been moving with confidence ever since.

Tim Hesbeens  26

“ Never give up. There were so many times I wanted to quit but once my coursework was complete, it was definitely worth it.” No matter what life throws your way, you have to keep moving forward if you want to succeed. No one knows this better than Timothy Hesbeens. Growing up in the shadow of the majestic NASA space shuttles at Cape Canaveral, Tim dreamed about flying – and attending Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University – from a very young age. And he wasted no time chasing his dream.

Pilot, Southern Air Systems

Straight out of high school, he accepted a scholarship offer from the University of Oklahoma. Two years later, a summer job offer and a scholarship from a local home builder brought him back to Florida and Embry-Riddle. The dream was within his reach, but he wasn’t there yet.

Master of Aeronautical Science

“I finished the Bachelor of Science in Professional Aeronautics. Between my degree and flight experience, I felt well-prepared to find a job in aviation, but with the industry still feeling the repercussions of September 11th, it didn’t go as smoothly as I planned.” One airline hired him, then laid him off three months later. Another hired him for a position in Sanford, Florida, then transferred him to Puerto Rico halfway through his training. Yet another company offered him a position back in Florida, only to withdraw it before he could even start – but after he had quit his last job.

Tim finally caught a break when Southern Air Systems, an airplane management company based in Florida, called looking for a pilot. Tim accepted the position and has been flying ever since – stopping only to marry his girlfriend (who waited seven months for him to return from Puerto Rico, and to take some online classes for his Master of Aeronautical Science degree). He completed his graduate degree in 2009. And he’s been living his dream every day since.

The perfect wave Inspiring his daughter’s ambition

Erik Ordoñez joined the Air Force when he was pretty much out of options. He didn’t want to go to college, and his mother finally laid down the law, insisting that he had to do something. That something turned out bigger than he had ever imagined: coordinating engine movements to and from critical operations. This opportunity to make a real impact convinced Erik to remain in the aviation field. A few years later, an entirely different position convinced him to go even further. “I became a husband, and then a father. With a wife and little girl counting on me, I wanted to make sure I had options and the potential for advancing into management.” Erik enrolled in the Bachelor of Science in Professional Aeronautics program, becoming one of only two soldiers in his squadron pursuing a degree. And the pursuit would present many challenges. On top of balancing fourteen-hour workdays with classes, studying, and a newborn baby, Erik was on active duty. Twice he was forced to drop classes when his orders sent him out of the country with no indication of when he would return. But return he did. And thanks to teachers and advisors who understood how to accommodate soldiers in his situation, Erik completed his degree after four years of hard work. And in 2009, he signed up for even more. Today, two classes into the Master of Aeronautical Science degree program at Embry-Riddle Worldwide, Erik is enjoying the learning process so much that he can envision becoming an Embry-Riddle instructor himself one day. For now, he has his hands full teaching the most important person of all: his daughter, now seven years old. She loves to surf, just like her father. Perhaps one day, Erik will ignite her sense of ambition, as his mother did for him.

Shannon Johnson 30

“ When I first joined the Navy, getting a degree was mandatory for advancement. I found out that Embry-Riddle would award credits for my military experience, so that seemed like the best route to my bachelor’s degree.” From her small hometown of Blakely, Georgia, Shannon Johnson could never have dreamed she would wind up manning a control tower in Kaneohe Bay, Hawaii. In fact, this farm girl had always imagined a future filled with animals, not airplanes. But when she graduated high school with no money for veterinary college – or the desire to work in the local paper mill or power plant – she decided to join the Navy instead. They assigned her to Air Traffic Control School – a post she was lucky enough to love. Shannon’s military career brought her all over the world, from Virginia to Guantanamo Bay, from Jacksonville to San Diego, and finally to her current station in Hawaii. The military also brought something else within her reach: a college education. “I found out that Embry-Riddle would award credits for my military experience, so that seemed like the best route to my bachelor’s degree. I enrolled in the Bachelor of Science in Professional Aeronautics degree program. Once I started, I really loved the program.” With classes taught by retired Lieutenant Colonels, retired Marines and instructors with strong industrial backgrounds, Shannon learned more than she ever could on the job. She even developed a new passion for safety and accident investigation, eventually declaring the subject as her minor. She completed the degree in 2010, and is already getting a jump on her master’s degree. If she retires from the Navy in 2011, she knows an education will help smooth the transition to civilian life. Whether she remains in the military or not, Shannon plans to stay in air traffic control. Aviation may not have been a childhood passion, but it has become her adult destiny.

“Once the military lifted the degree requirement, a lot of people stopped going to college. I think my degree will give me an advantage over everyone else.”

Even with 20 years of work experience under her belt, Melissa Beach was always bothered by the fact that she didn’t have a college degree. As the economy grew shaky, having a degree felt even more critical. But as a working mom, Melissa wondered how she’d squeeze school into her busy schedule. After taking a close look at her schedule, she realized that if she gave up some of her personal time, she wouldn’t have to sacrifice family time. And having two Embry-Riddle campuses close by – one at the headquarters of her employer, Delta TechOps, and another in nearby Marietta, Georgia – also helped. Melissa enrolled in the Bachelor of Science in Technical Management degree program. But with just two classes to go, she hit a snag. Not all of the classes she needed were offered when she needed them – at least not at the two campuses within driving distance. But there was a third option: EagleVision Home. In this innovative new learning mode, students and the instructor “attend” regularly scheduled classes in a virtual classroom accessible from any Internet connection, anywhere in the world. During class, students may interact with one another and the instructor in real-time. Initially, Melissa was nervous about the new technology; she’d taken an online class once before and had fallen so far behind she had to quit. But she discovered how different EagleVision Home was. “You actually have the instructor there so you can ask questions, you have the interaction with other students, and you have the flexibility of signing in from wherever you are.” Going back for her college degree has turned out to be educational for her seven-year-old son as well. Thanks to the virtual classroom, Melissa was able to help him with his homework during her own class breaks. And by watching her in action, he learned that your education is worth taking seriously at any age. “With EagleVision Home, you have, I think, the best of both worlds. It’s all designed to make your life easier.”

“ My sons were playing college football while I was finishing my degree. Since I wasn’t obligated to be in the classroom or logged on at a specific time of day, I could still make it out to their games to watch them play. I would just go back to the hotel room and finish my assignments that night.” Frederick Ravadge is the kind of guy who always has a lot going on in his mind and in his life. As a kid, he wanted to be an orthodontist. Then a high school computer programming class ignited a new passion. After completing a bachelor’s degree in computer science, he went to work for Northrop Grumman. But his education was far from over. First, he earned a master’s degree in software engineering from National University, then when he wanted to develop specialized skills that would serve him in his industry, his search led him to Embry-Riddle Worldwide. The online Master of Aeronautical Science (MAS) turned out to be perfect for Frederick, who, in addition to being a busy professional, is a sports nut and the father of two boys. With the online MAS, he earned a great education and he was able to attend his sons’ college football games – as long as he was diligent enough to do his assignments back in the hotel room that night. Diligent he was. Today, with two master’s degrees under his belt and his boys all grown up, Frederick is finally taking advantage of some well-deserved down time, as well as the many benefits – some unexpected – that the degree has brought into his life.

Breaking into commercial aviation Becoming an airline executive

Some people dream of a career in aviation all their lives. Julius Banks was not one of them. As an architecture student at the Phoenix Institute of Technology, he dreamed of becoming the next Frank Lloyd Wright. Then two things happened. First, the Arizona housing industry froze up. Then, a Marine recruiter came calling for his brother. He wound up recruiting Julius instead. The plan was to stay in the military long enough to earn money to complete his architecture degree. Instead, he found his second calling. As a flight engineer with the Marines, Julius traveled the world, including Hawaii, Japan, the Philippines, Hong Kong, and Australia. On a trip home, he met the woman of his dreams and married her in 2001. In 2002, Julius retired from the Marines – fourteen years after he enlisted. While his aviation and military experience earned him a solid starting position at Boeing, a degree could take him to the next step. And Julius needed a university that would be there for him no matter what. “I had been to so many different bases, and everywhere I went, Embry-Riddle was there. When I started, we had just moved to California. But I knew that I could relocate from California to Albuquerque if I needed to.” Today, with the Bachelor of Science in Professional Aeronautics degree under his belt, Julius has some free time to enjoy family vacations and playing sports with his sons. But, he’s still learning. He is now studying project management in preparation for his next career move: breaking into commercial aviation. Somehow, the boy who wanted to follow in the footsteps of Frank Lloyd Wright now has the Wright Brothers to thank for his bright future. “Embry-Riddle was great working with my schedule. There’s no way I could have done this at a traditional school.”

“ My strategic management classes gave me tools that I was able to apply to a real world situation: the development of Lake Nona and the hospitals being built near the airport.” It’s no surprise that Jenny Iglesias-Hamann wound up working in the aviation field. Some of her earliest and best memories are of airplanes soaring overhead.

She may not have realized it at the time, but she was witnessing her future. A passion for aviation had taken root. After moving to Florida, she started college, enrolled in the Army Reserves and wound up working at the Sanford International Airport. She was on her way to realizing her lifelong dream: a career in aviation. But life had more twists and turns in store. In 2005, she was deployed to Iraq, where she served for two years.

“When I came back from overseas, they had an education fair at the airport and there it was: Embry-Riddle! It almost seemed like a sign. But don’t expect it to last for long. She is already considering returning to Embry-Riddle for her Ph.D., so she can teach aviation to the next generation one of these days. “My strategic management classes gave me tools that I was able to apply to a real world situation: the development of Lake Nona and the hospitals being built near the airport. Becoming a professor Being a mentor to the next generation of logistics professionals

Joe Bushnell was just a young soldier when his Navy supervisor, noticing his methodical nature and aptitude for planning, recruited him for his first job in logistics. He was a natural. But even a natural reaches his limits. After seven years on the job, Joe enrolled in Embry-Riddle’s Master of Science in Management degree program with integrated logistics as his focus. Then the university launched a new degree: the Master of Science in Logistics and Supply Chain Management. The program was right up Joe’s alley. With the encouragement of his professor and mentor, Joe transferred to the new program and began developing his knowledge of logistics at a much deeper level. “The professor inspired me to start my own research on total cost of ownership in project management and economic order quantity. Now, we’re working on that research together and are actually going to have it published.” Joe quickly learned to apply his new knowledge on the job, implementing a number of new purchasing tactics that reduced his department’s costs significantly. Soon enough, friends and colleagues at major aviation companies were calling him for advice. Now that he is retired from the Navy, Joe is focusing on the next step in his logistics career: a doctorate degree. He hopes to become a professor one day, so he can serve as a leader and mentor to other rising stars in the field. Because, as he knows from his own experience, the right guidance makes all the difference. “With the right guidance, I was able to do things I never thought I could, including linear programs, ANOVA regression and statistical process control analysis.”

“ The good thing was, everywhere I went, Embry-Riddle had a satellite campus, which was wonderful.” Major Jennifer Newsome was just thirteen years old the day that a family friend took her for a ride in his Cessna 182. Even at such a young age, she knew that she had found her calling. Whatever it took, she was going to fly.

She joined the Army right after high school – a move she thought would be a temporary step along the way to a career in commercial aviation. But as it turned out, Jennifer loved being a soldier. She has been wearing the uniform and rising through the ranks ever since. She attributes part of her success to her education.

Soldier

“A lot of people don’t understand this, but the Army is the biggest corporation in the United States. They want you to continue your education. They’re not going to let you stagnate. If you want to stay in, you have to keep bettering yourself.” Jennifer had never enjoyed school before. But when she signed up for the Master of Aeronautical Science degree program at Embry-Riddle, she found an exciting learning environment that couldn’t have been more dynamic – or more inspiring. But as much as she enjoyed her classes, her military career came first.
