The little circus is born out of playing with detail

FOTO: WWW.OISIVERAIE.COM

Circus game that touches the senses and grasps the mind The inner sound waves of the audience will today vibrate to the improvisational sound and object installation Little Circus by Laurent Bigot´ from France, l’Oisiveraie company. LIISA OJAKÕIV

Little Circus has been called a magical stage show, in which no animal is harmed. It is a strange, wonderfully thought-out little technical wonder which speaks to children and adults alike with its playfulness and genius. What makes this performance unique is the use of live sounds created on the spot and objects made of different materials (wood, plastic, strings, springs). The resulting installation has been also called a circus of sounds and theatre of objects. In the performance, a pulsating circus appa-

ratus made of economical materials is built, which then introduces clever technological solutions. In other words: a strange circus world can be observed moving on the stage, close to the audience, which is directed and lead skillfully with timely interventions by Laurent Bigot, the author of the performance. A captivating mini-circus Although the author will be visible to the audience for the duration of the show, everything that’s happening on the circus arena allows us to forget his presence. In the arena, known and unknown objects will meet, which, thanks to the author’s hand, will relate to each other and tell the audience a story. Stereotypical circus pieces are set in a minimalist form and the spectator will then begin to chase them with their organs of hearing, sight,

and thinking. What is important is that no text is used on the stage and the whole story is relayed without words, through a unique language of theatre, in which meanings will form through an ensemble of light-, sound- and object play. Sounds have a special meaning in the performance: the objects and toys of the installation are moved in a minimalist circus arena, resulting in frictions and vibrations, which will be amplified to the audience through microphones. Inspired by music and amateur activities The author of the play, Laurent Bigot, is a musician and a composer with diverse interests, who has cooperated with musicians, dancers, film directors, writers, actors and visual artists in his works. What inspired him to create Little Circus performed at Treff was

interest in simple everyday objects, but also in the possibilities to create unusual sounds. He had already been interested in the mechanics of objects, and not considering himself a visual artist, has created whole new constructions for the show from simple objects. In his performance Little Circus, he also creatively shows one way of recycling and expresses the joy of DIY (DIY – do-it-yourself), which takes the viewer back to their childhood. Little Circus offers a captivating and thought-provoking theatre experience for both the young and the old, speaking to the viewer with each body cell. The performance has already reached several European stages, and has also been performed in Canada, USA, Brazil and Argentina. The performance can be seen today at 14:00 and 17:00 and tomorrow at 12:00 and 16:00 at Köismäe tower.

The dragon: My role in Shrek the Musical was only a debut On a beautiful day during the festival, the reporter of Treff Daily ran into an enormous dragon on the street. The reporter pushed the microphone under the dragon’s nose and asked a few questions. ANNIKA ANDRESEN Wow! With whom do I have the pleasure to meet? My name is Mimmu. I have been guarding the castle of a very tetchy princess for many years and let’s be honest, I haven’t got enough attention, and now I can enjoy the fresh air and be free. And what are you doing here? I’m enjoying the festival, watching theatre performances, communicating with people, taking part in street events. Basically, I participate in theatrical performances as well as watch them. Tell me a little bit more about yourself. My physique is larger than the average, I’m beautiful, my lips are painted... I know that there are rumours going around about me that it’s dangerous to look me in the eye – I may swallow people up

Which on is escaping - the dragon on Mr Treff? or they may fall in love with me. And if they do fall in love with me, then it’s not my fault that I’m such a romantic who likes to flirt. From what I can recall that others have said is that The dragon is cool! Do come to converse with me! What language does the dragon speak? To tell the truth, I may become very shy when I’m around people and words don’t come out of my mouth. I’ve heard that you are running away from someone. Who is it that you’re running away from? I’m running away from boredom. I’ve been stationed to this tower and told to stand there

and guard. I yearn to get out now, I want a life, I want to achieve something, I want do great things. Was your part in Shrek merely a role you had to play? Wasn’t it Mimmu we saw on stage? It was my debut. I guess that everyone puts a part of themselves into their characters, but it’s still mostly acting. Aren’t you afraid that your will be stuck with your on-screen character once you have acted in a film? I hope not. I hope that it was only the first step towards popularity, a debut. Everything is still ahead and will definitely outdo my role in Shrek.

FOTO: URMAS MAND

Many actors dream of playing in a play written by Shakespeare. Do you have such a dream role? I don’t have a dream role. I’d rather like to stage something one day, organise something. I have a lot of life experience actually, I know this and that and I will soon be ready to speak about it. But what’s the main thing that you wish to say to the public on the streets who visit Treff? I want to say that life may be much easier than we think. Beauty lies in simplicity. It’s in my nature, I simply walk a bit and do nothing special, I’m not going to do magic tricks. That’s exactly what’s captivating.

Morrison’s dreams teach children how to find friends Morrison and the Four Seasons a puppet show put together collaboratively by Estonians and Slovenians, which tells children a story about finding friends and about the constantly changing nature of life, is being performed today at 11.30 and at 14.00 in the Oval Hall of the Estonian State Puppet Theatre. ANNIKA ANDRESEN Morrison is a little boy who has heard stories of different seasons and one day he starts seeing them in his dreams, but in an especially extraordinary form. Thanks to the mysterious key that allows puppeteers to open the doors to dreams, the audience is also able

Morrisoni and Summer to see what exactly is going to happen in the dream. Children are shown how Spring, Summer, Fall and Winter, having taken human form, become friends with Morrison and how Morrison adapts to new situations. „Morrisoni ja neli aastaaega“ [Morrison and the Four Seasons]

is the first children’s production of Estonian author and director Mirko Rajas. According to him, the style of the performance was a new challenge for him. “Puppets that are usually controlled by three people had to be modified for one person,” Rajas explained, adding that during the initial stages of the

rehearsal period, they tried to find techniques and develop a new play style. Despite the fact that the performance at Tallinn TREFF Festival is in Slovenian, according to Rajas, the role of text is not too important. “The puppet theatre is universal and, ideally, everyone should be able to get something out of puppet shows even without the text,” he said. The collective that created the performance was put together last year on the proposal of Mini teater, with the help of the Puppet Nomad Academy III project. The performance stars actors Maruša Majer and Joseph Nzonbandora, as well as Estonian director Mirko Rajas, artist Kalju-Karl Kivi and composer Ekke Västrik.

Brice Coupey - from an apprentice to master

FOTO: CARLO GIESA

French actor Brice Coupey: puppetry is a whole Brice Coupey is the artist and the director of Companie Alinéa. It is a French company from Montraille and it has already excisted for 10 years now. He is the pupeteer of the company, also the person who decides projects for the company and directs some of them. He is a specialist in glove puppets. Most of his shows are based on this type of theatre, but he also works with other companies who use more text or other techniques. TRIINU SIKK How did you find your way to puppet theatre? Before I was just an actor in French theatre. Then I met Alain Recoing, an old puppeteer. He was my master for 3 years. He is the reason why I am a puppeteer today.

Do you feel that the materials or the texts you are working with tell you which techniques to use? There are different possibilities. If it was a text before, then the text says me what technique to use. The other possibility is that I want to show something on my own. At the moment I use mainly one technique – glove puppets. With it I can express wihtout words what I want to say.

When I am alone, I play with different parts of my body, it is the conversation with me and myself. It is almost the same when I am with the musician, because we are two parts of the same body. When I work with other people I wait for the reaction from the other performer. It is the same thing between me and myself or me and another.

From where do you get your inspiration? I work with two materials. Firstly, texts in general, mainly contemporary authors. And secondly with the communication between the puppet and between live music, then the improvisation is born.

What is the main idea you want to express with your performances? When I begin with my performance, I don’t know the reason, the idea I want to express. But at the end I understand it, the philosophy of my performance. Generally it is freedom. I like speaking about freedom, but with different angers and visions.

You are mainly alone on stage. Is it easier or more difficult?

Are your performances mainly for children or for everyone?

My shows are all for everybody. I think that there is a different stage of understanding. For children there are some things to laugh at, definite emotsions. The adults get another meanings from the performances. The comprehension is always related to the age of the audience. Do you believe that adults need puppet theatre as well? Yes, because puppetry is a technique, like theatre, music or cinema. It is a way of art. It is important that the possibilities are very different from theatre or music. You must choose which technique to use for explaining your thoughts. Puppetry it is a whole imaginary universe. What is the current situation of puppet theatre in Europe at the moment? Do you feel that some changes are happening?

In France it is developing very much. There are big organisations and all of the theatres want to have puppet theatre performances. In France the change is sure. In Europe I don’t know really, but I think that the puppetry is up today. I know there are a lot of puppetry schools, very big and good schools. Today the puppetry for adults is growing a lot. What are your expectations for this festival? We haven’t seen much yet. Today I saw Duda Paiva’s performance,

but I already knew his other performances before. I like his works and his universe. We are looking forward to all of the performances, everything new we can find. We know a little bit of the puppetry in Russia and Poland for example, but we are very interested in seeing the works from Estonia and Finland and all of the other countries as well. I like the festival because it is very friendly. It is interesting to feel that the audience is growing with the festival. We are happy to be a part of it.

Rousing street performances from the wind Treff has never tried to only be a private party for theatregoers or to hide from the city folk by hiding indoors. Instead, the goal is to offer theatre to everyone that happens to be in the right place at the right time. The first day of the festival offered plenty of interesting sights. LIISA POOL You can come in to contact with theatre at the festival even if it isn’t actually on the schedule. Boys and girls in red and purple costumes can be seen in the vicinity of the puppet theatre completely unrelated to any performances. Bringing smiles to the faces of city dwellers with pantomime, the characters vanish from sight as unexpectedly as they appeared. The troupe from the Yaroslavl State Theatre Institute performed many different pieces under the title Came with the Wind, demonstrating both their dancing skills and their talents at handling marionettes and puppets of woven string. The otherwise mostly fragmented performance was made more whole during the final bows, for which all the performers used a picture frame that had earlier been used as a prop. Street Performance by the Royal Giraffe Theatre charmed specta-

One can fly over the streets during Treff tors with the graceful and otherworldly nature of the performers, given additional support by the summer-green slope of Toompea, bathed in sunlight, which the performers skilfully used to their advantage in their movement. The visual effect was amplified by impactful make-up, eye-catching costumes, the use of flags and

walking on stilts. At times the performance, drawing inspiration from medieval theatre, was actually aesthetically reminiscent of Japanese anime. The acts Rapūta[shake] and Kerūta [twirl] by male performers of NUKU were all similar in structure. The only thing that was different was the central activity of

these performances, as suggested by the titles. Rapūta, with the shaking of wood logs, created an illusion of whipping oneself with birch branches on the sauna bench – an illusion reinforced by the use of smoke machines and watering the actors with a watering can. Kerūta, on the other hand, challenged the actors’ balancing skills.

to another, and finally reaches a town. His companions and the life there teaches him a lot, but over time he distances himself from his values and mental sources more and more, and soon he finds himself in the middle of a dissolute and spiritually dull life. In the dance, this part is illustrated with faster, more chaotic coreography, and the jewelry clanking around the necks of the dancers portrays the reverence of material values. The place where Siddharta reaches final perfection again, is back in the nature. On a bank of a river, in whose unceasing flow and depths he finds wisdom, and on it he lives as a boat man for the rest of his life. The recognizing of the unity, selflessness and perfection

is hidden in the unceasing flow of water, constant running. In the last act of the dance, Siddharta sits still, blissful and aloof in the lotus position, around him spin the bodies of five dancers as hands of a clock, to the eternity.

The river’s secret Herman Hesse’s Siddharta is a story of a quest for peace and perfection. How to translate an introspective text that is without a strong dramaturgical source to the stage and into a genre that lacks verbal expression? This has been accomplished by Goltsman Ballett. MERETE VÄIN On the stage opens a slightly frozen spacetime, which is filled with air and color. Six dancers’ body movements are hypnotizing, dream-like, feeling like a collective meditation. Moves that slowly push into this room are vermicular and take their sweet time. Namely, the passing of

time seems to be the central theme of the ballet: it is stressed clearest by the music, whose constant, repetitive sounds (the ringing of church bells among others) bring into imagination the ticking of a clock. Repetition also illustrates the choreography, which can be interpreted as physical chanting of a mantra, and the dancers are clad in blue and yellow robes reminiscent of those worn by monks. Still, what can be seen on the stage is not limited to abstract gliding and showing off. The dance has carried these few but important milestones from the novel to the stage. The Brahman’s son Siddharta, who lives an ascetic life and travels, seeking the meaning of life and true teachings, from one sage

Divine entertainment from the Greek gods – Bestiaires DudaPaiva Company’s Bestiaires is certainly one of the highlights of this year’s Treff Festival. Paiva – known for its quality. KRISTI RUUSNA Bestiaires is a symbiosis of puppetry and contemporary dance theatre. Paiva’s bestiary is divided into études, or rather into chapters, which attempt to unfold the untold stories of the Greek gods. The deities are petrified, yet still in motion. A paradox, like puppetry itself – a doll as an object that is lifeless may spring to life in the same way a living being can. Moving, breathing, feeling. The performance offers stories which spread into the hall in an entertaining, yet utterly professional manner. Humour, which is difficult to act out both in theatre and in puppetry, has realy hit the spot. For example, could Zeus have spoken with an Indian accent and been dumb as a rock? Or could Medusa have been a man instead, wearing a loincloth made of snakes? Moreover, was the oh-so-popular Cupid a hipster at the forefront of his time? Or could Persephone, Hades’ prisoner, suffer from the Stockholm syndrome? The question remains: was it all back then, or is it like this at present? Paiva’s foam rubber Since silence is golden when it comes to history, the latter holds true. DudaPaiva Company is the here and now, sipping thirstily from the goblet of sarcasm, and then blowing life-giving fire into the eyes of the audience. It is done under the guidance of the honourable modern Cupid (Mart Müürisepp). The performance of the suddenly resurrected dolls, occupying one side of the stage, brings a sparkle in the eye. Paiva has once again used foam rubber for creating the dolls and set design, thus employing flexible possibilities. The images on the bas-relief break themselves free from their imprisonment in rock; Athena’s hand turns into a hooting and flying owl, and the male-Me-

The Greece gods brought with them a novel joy dusa transforms into a horrific monster with snakes in place of hair. One could go on and on about the magnificent scenes from the show. It is indisputably a construction of masterful puppet-making and ingenious set design. Beautiful movement, prominent gestures Another significant spark makes the eyes shine through contemporary dance, which contrasts with the rocky heroes in its lovely airiness. The outstanding dancers (as well as puppeteers in this case), Ester Natzijl and Ilija

Surla, or rather the spring girl Persephone and male-Medusa, offer a spectacular pulchritude, which obviously requires excessive physical effort, in the form of dance. The graceful movement and elegant gestures channel the beauty of ancient Greece, but at the same time allude to the cruelty and coldness of the gods. It is as if the fundamental truth about divinity emerges out of the interaction of dance and puppets – divinity is born on the borderline where the unbearable beauty meets the appalling grotesque. You watch it, you become enchanted.

The cliches of gods Bestiaires offers the audience a playful insight into the bickering of the gods, the wish to get your way no matter what, but certainly into falling in love as well. By integrating dance and puppetry, the cliché stories of the gods are presented to the audience as tales similar to feuilleton. A line from the play got stuck in my mind: If it is possible to love you, there is nothing that you have been deprived of. In other words, the world is your oyster, and you have everything if you have ever loved. And Treff ’s audience loves DudaPaiva Company.

Vabandus!

ÄRA KÕRBE ÄRA - ilmateade soosib trefikülastajat kohe eriti palavalt, me soovitame end päikese eest kaitsta! Treff 2013 on keskkonnateemaline. TOO VÄIKSED SUGULASED JA ÕED-VENNAD NUKUETENDUSI VAATAMA Pikale tänavale, Laiale tänavale ja tutvu etendustega kodulehel http://www.nuku.ee/festival/ajakava/

Ilm

“Iga-aastane kokkulepe püsib: ilm tuleb ikka ilus ja läheb aina paremaks.”
