issoula and its surrounding areas offer a wide variety of outdoor sports guaranteed to deliver enthusiasts terrific experiences in all four seasons. Recreationalists will find there is easy access to disc golf, mountain biking, river tubing, rock climbing, cross country skiing, downhill skiing and more. Devon Downing of Lolo has been playing disc golf (or “folf”) since 1998. “I started playing Blue Mountain in 1998. The course is the same but they didn’t have baskets for targets. Instead, you had to hit a pole or a

tree. Their 18-hole course now is fully equipped with steel chain baskets,” Downing said. “There is no fee to play the Blue Mountain Course. You do have to buy the folf discs at any sporting equipment store,” Downing said. “This is a very easy sport to get involved into. It’s very relaxing and you’re outside being active. There is strategy, too. You have to consider the wind and the distances you must accurately throw the discs,” Downing said. Further south of Missoula in the Bitterroot Valley await miles of trails perfectly suited for mountain biking. Caleb Senn of Hamilton has been serious about mountain biking since 2004 and enjoys

“Tubing and rafting the Blackfoot is very relaxing, and the rapids make for an exciting time, too!” many of the trails that the Bitterroot and Sapphire Mountains offer. “One trail I really enjoy is Calf Creek. It is on the east side of the valley at the end of Hamilton Heights Road. It has a lot of single track that connects to Butterfly Road and Willow Creek towards Corvallis. These are really popular trails because they are close to town. For more of a challenge, you can ride Warm Springs, south of Hamilton and past Conner. It has a lot of climbing and many miles of trails. The views are fantastic; it’s beautiful country,” Senn said. “You can get an affordable bike at a local bike shop. Get a good helmet and get started,” Senn said. “In order to really get into mountain biking, you need to get used to climbing the trails. “ Senn continue. It is really fun to go downhill but you have to climb to the top first. This can turn people off to the sport if they are not ready for the challenge, but this is what gets the

juices flowing to the brain. The dopamine and endorphines are released and that gets you ready for the adrenaline of the downhill!” Senn said. “One of the benefits to your body is that mountain biking is a really fast way to get in shape. A lot of it is mental, but that’s how I burn off the troubles of the day. It’s like cleaning out the file cabinet of the brain,” Senn said. “Go talk to your local bike shop and inquire about the groups that are available. Another great resource is bitterrootbackcountrycyclists. org,” Senn said. When summer’s heat becomes unbearable, fight back with a river float. Just east of Missoula in Bonner lies the Blackfoot River, a fantastic tube floating destination. Gary Hand of Blackfoot River Rentals can equip people with all of the float gear they need to enjoy an afternoon on the river. “One of our most popular trips is a float from Whitaker Bridge back to Blackfoot River Rentals.

Our float tubes are affordable and include a free shuttle to the put-in. We provide a basic safety plan on the shuttle ride up the river and explain submerged rocks and other obstacles you might meet on the way down,” Hand said. “Tubing and rafting the Blackfoot is very relaxing, and the rapids make for an exciting time, too!” Hand said. Blackfoot River Rentals can be reached at 406244-5593 or blackfootriverrentals.com. Just south of Missoula stand rock walls and boulders that satisfy rock climbers of all abilities. Carson Wilde of Freestone Climbing in Missoula mentioned those nearby climbing locations. “Some of the closest climbs are Elk Meadows, towards Lolo Hot Springs, and Kootenai, in Stevensville,” Wilde said. Before embarking to the trailhead, climbers can stop in at Freestone Climbing and brush up on their skills or gain some new ones. “Like all outdoor sports, climbing does have risks, so coming inside to practice is recommended. Our indoor bouldering requires no partner and we have a fully padded floor in the event you do fall,” Wilde said. “In general, bouldering is easy to get into, you just need a pair of climbing shoes,” Wilde said. “You can rent any kind of climbing gear from us, and local sporting goods stores sell climbing gear,” Wilde said. “We offer classes and individual lessons, but if you want to come and try bouldering, our staff

KURT WILSON, Missoulian

are all climbers and can help you with pointers,” Wilde said. Even when western Montana lies beneath a blanket of snow, outdoor sports are still easy to access. There are several locations for cross country skiing near Missoula. Ryan Day of The Trail Head mentioned places to ski. “In Missoula you can ski at Pattee Canyon and up the Rattlesnake. You can go a little south of Missoula up to the Lolo Visitor Center, or further south past Hamilton is Chief Joseph,” Day said. “This is a pretty easy sport to get into. We have full rental packages that we encourage you to start with to see if cross country skiing is for you. Once you rent twice we can apply the rental fees to the purchase of your own ski package,” Day said.

“Beside it being a good cardio exercise, getting out in the woods away from the hustle and bustle will help clear your mind. Any time you are in the woods enjoying nature you can gain some peace of mind,” Day said. There is a cross country ski club in Missoula as well. Missoula Nordic Ski Club has a website that functions as a resource for people seeking information about cross country skiing. It is missoulanordic.org. The Trail Head is located at 221 E. Front Street in Missoula. They can be reached by phone at 406-543-6966. Their website is trailheadmontana.net. In addition to cross country skiing, the Missoula area also features great downhill skiing opportunities. Christina Ellingson of Lolo has been downhill skiing for 20 years. She enjoys Snowbowl just north of Missoula and Discovery Ski Area southeast of Missoula in Anaconda. Ellingson enjoys these areas with her husband and four children. “All of my family skis except my husband. He rides a snowboard, but all four of our kids aged three to ten ski,” Ellingson said. “Beginners should take a class or a group lesson. Both Snowbowl and Discovery have instructors,” Ellingson said. Discovery has amazing views that look over

Georgetown Lake. Our favorite runs at Snowbowl are Paradise and High Roller. Paradise is the long run from the top of the mountain down to the lodge. High Roller goes between the two chairlifts,” Ellingson said. “Skiing is a fantastic workout! The great views from the mountains are very inspirational. I feel like I am playing hookie from life when I go skiing. It’s my happy place,” Ellingson said. Discovery Ski Area’s website is skidiscovery. com and Snow Bowl’s is KURT WILSON, Missoulian montanasnowbowl.com. However you like to recreate in the outdoors, Missoula and the surrounding areas are sure to deliver. Get out and adventure!

Get To Know The UM Campus Recreation Outdoor Program

T

by Dominic Farrenkopf for The Missoulian

he University of Montana Campus Recreation Outdoor Program offers equipment rental, organized trips, skill classes, a bike and ski maintenance shop, a climbing wall and more. The equipment rental is available to both UM students and the public, said Elizabeth Fricke, senior assistant director of campus recreation and director of the Outdoor Program. “Anyone can rent from us. There is a little bit of a discount for those students who have paid their fitness and rec fee. They will get a break on

fees when they swipe their Griz card, Fricke said. Users can rent boating equipment, including rafts, paddle boards, kayaks, canoes and float tubes. Along with boating equipment, extra items are available such as life jackets, paddles, wetsuits, coolers, pumps, dry boxes and dry bags. Camping equipment includes: overnight backpacks, ground pads, sleeping bags, tents, rain shelters, roll-up tables and propane camp stoves. Winter enthusiasts can rent Nordic crosscountry ski packages, as well as backcountry cross-country ski packages. Snowshoes, ice axes, snow saws, snow shovels and gaiters are also available.

12 2016-17 bear necessities “We fully explain the gear and equipment to renters. We go over in detail the proper use of the equipment. We take special care if someone is using the item for the first time,” Fricke said. The center also offers outdoor classes that teach new skills or enhance those they already have. Classes include backpacking trips, rockclimbing, day hikes, cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, mountaineering, rafting, canoeing and kayaking. “We have student leaders that take people backpacking, climbing or rafting. We teach ‘leave no trace’ backpacking and we really emphasize that. Our instructors are trained in supervision and are medically qualified to treat injuries sustained in the field. We teach with the most up-to-date instructions and principles. We are current in the field and industry in all aspects of our classes. We also teach all of the accredited courses through the Department of Health and Human Performance,” Fricke said. The Outdoor Program also has a workshop

where people can tune their bikes or winter gear. Tools are provided, and shop attendants can help people sharpen edges, wax skis and boards, fix gears and flats, lube chains and inflate tires. The Outdoor Rec climbing wall and bouldering cave – where people can learn to belay and take fundamentals classes - are in the Fitness and Recreation Center. “It is great for people to know what a valuable resource we are for on-campus and off-campus services. Just come by and see us! If you can’t stop in, please call or visit our website,” Fricke said. The Outdoor Program is on the northeast corner of the Fitness and Recreation Center next to Washington-Grizzly Stadium.

University of Montana Women’s Softball Team Is Up and Coming

S

Dominic Farrenkopf for the Missoulian

ince its inaugural season in 2014-15, the University of Montana Grizzly Softball Team has made significant strides under the designs and care of Coach Jamie Pinkerton and his dedicated staff. Pinkerton is in his third year as the Head Coach of Women’s Softball. He has a coaching record of 45-61 in two years at Montana with a 22-20 record in Big Sky Conference play. Pinkerton was instrumental in getting the U of M women’s softball team up and running. “I was hired in August 2013 to start and build the softball program here at Montana. I built it from the ground up. It started with hiring a staff, ordering all things necessary for the team,

recruiting the team and assisting with the building of the softball complex,” Pinkerton said. The Griz Softball Complex is a major asset. The Griz softball team can play in all weather conditions because of the complex’s artificial turf playing surface. This field is unique as it is the only of its kind in the Big Sky Conference. Grizzly Softball Field also stands out because of its indoor batting cages. This singular aspect allows the Griz to practice batting year-round. Along with building a remarkable complex, Pinkerton wants to build a fabulous program. “The first year was very rewarding. We got the team on the field and played for a season of firsts. The team did better than most expected. This past year the team matured and had its first winning season in both overall record and conference play. We played for the conference

championship on the final day and made our first postseason appearance,” Pinkerton said. The team is comprised of 21 student athletes who hail from several states and Canada. “We recruit nationally. In two years, players have come from Arizona, California, Washington, Montana, Illinois, Oklahoma, Nevada and British Columbia, Canada. We recruit them from softball tournaments nationally and in tournaments held here in Montana. We have try outs in September for walk-on candidates,” said Pinkerton. Both practice and play are held at the Grizzly Softball Field on South Campus. The team travels by bus and plane to play on competitor campuses across the country.

Pinkerton describes the atmosphere and culture of the team as close-knit and with very good chemistry. “The culture that we are trying to cultivate is one of a championship team. Our goals are to personally, academically and athletically improve on the previous year. We strive to be committed to the community, academics and athletics. Our team goal, every year, is to make the postseason and win the Big Sky Conference Championship,” Pinkerton said. Home games are ticketed events requiring gate admission. The 2016-17 season schedule and ticketing information will be available online at gogriz.com.

All My Sons Montana Repertory Theatre Tour 2015-16

Montana Repertory Theatre Thrives On the UM Campus

T

by Dominic Farrenkopf for The Missoulian

he Montana Repertory Theatre at the University of Montana is rich in history and full of opportunity for today’s theater students and professionals alike. “All in all, we are a hard-working group. We are not afraid to get into the trenches and are dedicated to the proposition that live theatre is good for the soul,” said Greg Johnson, Montana Rep’s artistic director. Johnson is planning the Montana Rep’s 50th anniversary celebration, which will center on a Jan. 20 opening night gala for this year’s national tour of Neil Simon’s “‘Barefoot In The Park.” A 50th annivesary commemorative book is being considered, he said. The memories start with 1967, when Bo Brown founded Montana Rep, he said. From 1967 to 1977 the company functioned as a student touring theater. The Montana Rep became a

professional equity touring company in 1977. As the professional theater-in-residence at the University of Montana, early touring efforts focused on Montana only, he said. “In recent years, starting in 1996 with its production of ‘To Kill A Mockingbird,’ the company has expanded its reach throughout the entire nation, still with a continued focus on smalland medium-sized presenters,” Johnson said. The Drama/Dance Department at the University of Montana wanted to provide students with professional opportunities outside the classroom or studio, which prompted the Montana Rep’s creation. “The Montana Rep also exists as a wing of the training program of the Drama/Dance Department at The University of Montana. As such, it provides scholarships and invaluable professional training opportunities for upper level and graduate students in acting, directing and theatre technology,” Johnson said.

18 2016-17 bear necessities Although based at UM, the Rep functions mainly as a touring operation with students as an integral part. “U of M students receive opportunities to perform in all aspects of the Rep programming, giving them invaluable professional exposure. Our touring company travels the nation, bringing high-quality theater to medium and small communities. It employs students from the university Theater program working hand-in-hand with professional actors, directors, designers and stage managers from major cities. It also brings a curriculum-based outreach educational tour to over 50 Montana communities,” Johnson said. The Rep’s national tour is “our big engine,” he said. “Our focus on the great American Canon has paid tremendous dividends. From ‘Streetcar Named Desire’ to ‘Death of a Salesman,’ from ‘To Kill a Mockingbird’ to ‘Cat on a Hot Tin Roof,’ we are privileged to tell some of the greatest stories ever written,” Johnson said.

The Montana Rep has two more programs, the Missoula Colony and the Montana Rep Missoula. “These groups develop and produce new plays and reinterpret existing plays of social and political significance, as well as providing a space for the next generation of American playwrights,” Johnson said. At the Missoula Colony, now in its 18th year, local and nationally known writers gather for 10 days to explore writing for stage and screen, he said. “With The Montana Rep Missoula’s ‘Visions and Voices’ we bring the Rep’s passion to our own downtown, performing plays of social relevance with an edge. Whether they are brand-new or a reworking of a classic, we hope to open eyes, thrill the senses and make the audience laugh, cry and think,” Johnson said. For scheduling and programming information on the Montana Rep, please visit montanarep.org.

Many students come near and far to attend the University of Montana. When deciding whether to register to vote in Missoula County or your home state or county, there are a few things to keep in mind. If you register to vote locally, there are some scenarios where your residency status elsewhere can be impacted. For instance, if you are a resident of Alaska, registering to vote in Montana may impact your Alaska Permanent Fund payment. Keep in mind that some scholarships may be dependent upon your home state residency, too. If you have circumstances that may prevent you from registering to vote in Montana, visit USA. gov to locate your local elections office for voting guidance. You may be able to request a ballot to be mailed to your Missoula address.

How to Register to Vote Registering to vote is easy and there are many groups who assist students in registering to vote on campus. You may also visit MissoulaVotes.com to download a voter registration application for submission to our office. The voter registration form is fairly standard. It starts off by asking you to affirm that you are a U.S. citizen, of voting age, and a resident of the state for at least 30 days before the election. Next it asks for name, date of birth, address information and more. Montana requires “verifying information,” which is either a Montana driver’s license number or the last four digits of your Social Security number. There is a section dedicated to where you may have been registered previously. By completing that section, we can notify your home state that you are now registered in Montana. Next, the voter has the option to receive ballots in the mail 25 days before an election rather than appearing in-person at their polling place on Election Day. Finally, the last and most crucial step is signing the voter registration card. If a signature or any other key portions of the registration card (e.g. residence address or date of birth) is blank, our office cannot process the voter registration card as normal, which may impact your eligibility to vote in upcoming elections. Make sure your form is complete and returned to our office at least 30 days before an election.

Voting Methods: Absentee vs. Polling Place Since 1999, Montana law has allowed voters to request an absentee ballot for any reason, whether it is the convenience of voting at your kitchen table or because you’re out of town. An absentee ballot simply means you will be absent from your polling place on Election Day. Absentee ballots mail 25 days before Election Day, which provides time for the voter to research their choices and vote in the comfort of their home. If the voter does not select the absenteemailing option when registering to vote, then then you must appear in-person at your designated polling place on Election Day in order to vote your ballot.

Late & Same Day Registration

in-person at the Elections Office to register and receive a ballot. Late registration occurs at the Elections Center located at the Missoula County Fairgrounds (1101 South Avenue W). There is plenty of parking and staff to help you with all your voting needs. Visit our website MissoulaVotes.com to view extended business hours and more information. The same process occurs on Election Day and is known as “same day registration.” We encourage voters to not wait until Election Day, as there may be wait times or lines. Take advantage of our satellite office voting event on November 1 in the University Center. You don’t need to leave campus in order to register to vote and receive a ballot! Visit MissoulaVotes.com for more information.

Check Your Voter Status Online!

Montana is one of several states that allows for late registration, which is voter registration after the “close of registration.” All states have a deadline to register to vote before an election. This deadline is known as the close of registration. In Montana, if you miss that 30 day deadline, you may appear

Voters can visit the MyVoterPageMT.com to view if they are registered to vote, on the list to receive ballots in the mail, sample ballots, directions to their polling place, and more! CONVENTIONAL

Missoula’s Music Scene Record Stores

M

Michael Siebert for the Missoulian

issoula is home to a vibrant music scene. If you want to see a folk band, you’re in the right place. If metal is more your thing, there’s a whole bar for that. If three people banging on scrap metal in executioner-style attire while harsh noise plays in the background is your idea of a Friday night, don’t fret. Missoula has an unquenchable thirst for music and the arts. As we all know, music is not just experienced in a live setting. Half the fun of music is getting to listen to it whenever you want. A lot of folks are content to just listen to music on their phones, and there’s nothing wrong with that. But a lot of others like to have something a little more physical. If you’re one of those people, there are two stores within walking distance of each other that will keep you occupied for the entirety of your four years here. Ear Candy and Rockin’ Rudy’s Record Heaven are two very different locations that will satiate your thirst for physical music. Both specialize in vinyl records, but carry other formats as well. Each

store has its own particular selection, and both have something to offer any kind of music listener. “I think there’s just something about a population that needs to be interested in various genres to be able to support a record store,” said Scott Storer, manager at Rockin’ Rudy’s. Storer is one of two main employees at Rockin’ Rudy’s, which specializes in used records. While they carry some new releases, the store boasts a large collection of used material in all genres. ““One of the things that really appeals to people is the number of records that we have,” Storer said. They also run an eBay store, where they sell some of their more rare and obscure inventory. Conversely, Ear Candy emphasizes new vinyl records. Opened in 1998, the founders came from both electronic and indie backgrounds, which makes Ear Candy a haven for obscure and esoteric releases as well as more mainstream fare. The store also boasts an eclectic online selection of everything from DJ material to small label albums. “I think that gives us the flexibility to take gambles on titles that wouldn’t necessarily appeal to the general public,” said Adelaide Every, Ear Candy’s front of house manager.

The two stores are different enough that their existence isn’t a burden to the other. “Ear Candy and Record Heaven can co-exist because I don’t think we’re stepping on each other’s toes too much,” Storer said. “I think we’re able to coexist without ‘stealing’ anybody’s clientele.” Both stores go out of their way to support local artists; fliers for local shows cover the walls of both stores, while Ear Candy distributes records from two local labels, Minor Bird Records and Wantage Distribution. The clerks are always willing to dispense knowledge about their favorite releases, whether past or present. They also encourage anyone to pick up the hobby, and don’t value exclusivity or elitism, a concern many people have about record collectors. Music fans have the means to sink as much of their paychecks as possible into Missoula’s record community. Both stores have been open for years, through good times and bad. And with the way records have made a resurgence in recent years, they won’t be going away any time soon either.

VFW Post 209 Garage, folk, skurf, and punk rock are among the genres you could encounter on any given night. If it’s a local show, the covers usually range from donations to $5. A different band hosts a residency every month, which means they book every Thursday night for their month. Since it’s a VFW, veterans always get in free.

Free Cycles Although a community bike shop, it can double as an all ages DIY performance space. Keeping in the spirit of Free Cycles’ ideology, all shows are donation-based. You’ll commonly see a hors d’oeuvre table, as well as kegs, again, on a donation basis.

Top Hat This is where you go to see the smaller bands on the national circuit; like Tweedy (of Wilco), Femi Kuti and Ben Sollee. They also feature a “Raising the Dead” happy hour on Mondays, featuring Grateful Dead trivia. There’s a similar deal on Wednesdays, but with Phish, called “Sharin’ In The Groove.”

Wilma This theater was recently bought and renovated by the Top Hat. You’ll see bigger names here, like Method Man and Redman, Dweezil Zappa, and Emmylou Harris. There’s no re-entry, so make sure you accomplish what you need to do before handing them your ticket.

Badlander A healthy mix of underground rock and rolltype stuff, like Built To Spill, and electronic DJtype stuff, like the Dead Hipster Dance Party. They have a weekly Musician’s Showcase, which essentially is an open mic. Jazz Martini Night is every Sunday, with $5 martini specials.

The Palace In the same complex, right downstairs, resides this basement venue/pool hall. It hosts a lot of underground Missoula music as well as touring acts, from hip-hop to indie to experimental. There’s no windows and it’s pretty dungeon-like, but there’s a new sound system that cranks the jams accordingly.

Union Club During the school year, they tend to have bands every Friday and Saturday night for your dancing pleasure. It’s always free. Generally swing dancing music, country/blues/classic rock. They also have games, like pool, pingpong and cornhole, if you’re into that.

Caras Park It’s right by the river, so you can check the surf while you check the jams. The park generally has vendors when bands are playing. Usually coincides with some kind of festival, be it Brewfest or Celtic Festival or ZooFest, etc.

Break Espresso

Monks This is where you tend to get down and dirty and sweaty with their wide open dance floor. This fellow basement venue features mostly electronicbased acts, both local and national.

Live music every last Friday from 7-9 p.m. Free, with donations accepted by the performers. They generally have local performers, but on occasion some touring acts.

The 12th annual Symphony in the Park performance brought some 6,000 people out to Caras Park. KURT WILSON, Missoulian

Modest Mouse plays before a sold out crowd at Big Sky Brewing in 2014.

Adams Center Kind of like an arena, but smaller. While they have sports events, gun shows and craft fairs, they also host some concerts. Neil Young has played there, as has Death Cab for Cutie. Acoustics aren’t preferable, but hey, it’s a scaled-down arena.

Stage 112 at the Elk’s Lodge This venue has a slew of nightlife options, ranging from open mic comedy to metal. They get some pretty dope hip-hop shows, notably Prhyme (Royce Da 5’9 & DJ Premier of Gang Starr).

The Real Lounge Downstairs, there’s a newer addition to the Missoula scene, run by the folks at 112. In this basement venue, the performers are on the same level as the crowd, which adds a more equal vibe to the whole scenario.

ZACC (Zootown Arts Community Center) Their Northside location sets them apart

from most other venues, and they don’t hold shows too often. When they do, their basement shows have a curfew of 11 p.m., and no booze. They focus more on music and arts education for (mostly) kids, and provide art spaces and classes to the public.

Big Sky Brewing If a band doesn’t play the Wilma or Adams Center, they’ll probably play here. It’s an outdoor stage right by the brewery. Wide-open, kidfriendly, and a great view of the valley.

Draught Works Another early show spot, the brewery hosts free shows featuring mostly acoustic/background music for the taproom’s patrons. Always free. Music usually goes from about 5-8 p.m.

Imagine Nation Brewing This kid-friendly brewery host jams as well as shows. Acts range from traditional Irish music to straight-ahead jazz. They also have books if you’re not into the music.

LGBTQ Student Resources & Support

M

Michael Siebert for the Missoulian

any prospective students often wonder what additional resources a school will offer them beyond classes and housing. This is doubly true for LGBTQ students, who often seek specialized information and care beyond the basics. Luckily, the University of Montana is home to several advocacy groups, resource centers and medical care options specifically geared toward LGBTQ people. If you’re on that spectrum and looking at UM, you should certainly check out:

Lambda Alliance The Lambda Alliance is open to anyone, and has a sizable collection of reading material on a wide variety of LGBTQ subjects. They also host community events, including a recent vigil for the victims of the Pulse Nightclub shooting in Orlando. They also offer “de-stressing” sessions, and are always down to lend an ear. (If you’re

a grad student or a UM employee, you could also check out the Outfield Alliance, geared specifically toward those groups.)

Women’s Resource Center Though called the Women’s Resource Center, they are in no way exclusionary toward anyone on the queer spectrum. They often work in solidarity with the Lambda Alliance, (and in fact are located next to each other in the University Center.) The WRC hosts larger-scale events such as Slut Walks, and works to fight for sexual assault advocacy, transgender health resources, and various other issues that affect cisgender women and LGBTQ individuals alike.

SARC (Student Advocacy Resource Center) Issues such as sexual assault and partner/ domestic violence disproportionately affect LGBTQ people. The folks at Curry Health Center’s SARC are trained to help counsel you through

any sort of trauma you may experience, and won’t disregard your sexual orientation or gender identity in the process.

Curry Health Center Counseling and Psychological Services If you’re in need of immediate or shorterterm counseling, and are looking for a trained counselor who cares about your identity, the Curry Health Center’s mental health services are some of the best you’ll find in Missoula. Counselors are trained to support you and are sensitive of what you’re going through, whether it’s gender dysphoria or identity struggles. It’s all covered by student insurance, and they can refer you to counselors in town as well.

UM Allies

to help you through your struggles. That list and more can be found at umt.edu/umallies. While Montana may be more rural than a lot of other places in the country, that doesn’t mean there aren’t people who care. The resources you can find at the University of Montana will help you stay on your feet, whether you’re in crisis or just need help getting by.

University Professor Mehrdad Kia

M

Michael Siebert for the Missoulian

ost professors at the University of Montana live what they teach. The writing professors are published, the biologists conduct research, and the philosophers drink bad coffee and think about Sartre. One of UM’s best professors is an expert in his field in no small part because he lived there. Dr. Mehrdad Kia is a much-published author and historian who teaches in the university’s Central and Southwest Asian studies program. A native of Iran, he, along with his brother Ardi, directs the program, and built it from the ground up along with several other faculty members. They are dedicated to making students aware not just of the conflicts in that region, but of the cultural and environmental vibrancy as well.

“I think that the level of misunderstanding, and at times the general ignorance about the region, is very deep,” Kia said. “What makes it, first and foremost … a wonderful challenge is the ability to bring the real Middle East, the real North Africa, the real Central Asia out.” On top of directing the program, Kia also teaches a variety of classes, including the two-part Islamic Civilization sequence. He is known for his lectures, in which his flair for the dramatic tends to shine. His engaging classes usually fill up, even the difficult-to-sell three-hour seminars that he sometimes teaches. Kia has spent a great deal of time in the region. Born in Tehran, he was schooled in the Iranian Catholic school system until he began studies at the Tehran International School. He came to the United States shortly after, and

He has conducted research in places like Turkey and, since the collapse of the Soviet Union, countries including Georgia, Azerbaijan and Armenia. “I want to share some of that experience, and some of my own understanding of this incredible region with students here, and encourage them to study it beyond my classes,” Kia said. Kia has spent the entire summer working on three separate book projects. Two of them are set to be published by Greenwood, and discuss

the cultural and political histories of both the Ottoman Empire and the Islamic world. The third is a two-volume encyclopedia on pre-Islamic Iran, and is not yet complete. Kia was voted one of UM’s best professors in the Missoulian’s Missoula’s Choice Awards, and for good reason. His dedication to his students, and his desire to see them learn and succeed, makes his classes and seminars among the most interesting and useful one could take at the university. It would be a mistake not to take at least one class from Kia.

First Friday Preview

F

Rachel Crisp Philips

or over two decades, Missoula’s monthly First Friday event has earned a reputation as one of the top picks for a night out on the town. From 5-8 p.m. on the first Friday of every month, rain or shine, the event attracts large crowds year-round. With local artists and musicians on-site and set to enthrall, combined with a regular appearance of wine and other treats, First Friday was initially started by a small group of owners of local galleries that include the Monte Dolack Gallery, the Dana Gallery and the Missoula Art Museum. Born from an eagerness to give the public a chance to connect to local artists, the regular gathering now averages at least thirty venues per date, a sharp increase from the initial half-dozen participants. Those participants can vary from monthto-month, and range from the more obvious

downtown galleries and museums to secluded coffee shops and other storefronts, such as the atypical offices of Prudential Montana Real Estate. With so much art in the air, street performers and vendors are frequently present as well, and the increased foot traffic is a boon to local restaurants who claim this night is their busiest night of the month. With so much to see in such a short evening, an organizational need was met when Montana’s first local arts agency, The Missoula Cultural Council, got involved five years ago with a desire to help connect the local community to local artists, a sentiment that is at the cornerstone of their mission statement. “A lot of people from word of mouth know about First Friday and head downtown. but there really wasn’t a central place to see what’s happening. So it seemed like a logical thing for us to be the organization to make sure there was

50 2016-17 bear necessities a center for information,” notes Matt Anglen, Program Director for the MCC, “It seemed like it really fit in with our purpose, we do a lot to try and promote the arts and keep them healthy here in Missoula.” With both printed and online guides to the First Friday showings made available, as well as an expanded gallery guide to ongoing art events in the community, the MCC excels in its stewardship of the affair. However, maintaining a localized source for information does not imply leadership, as the council serves as host for the information, rather than organizer. “We don’t actually plan anything, it’s an organic event. Basically, it kind of just happens on its own. Every venue organizes their own event, nobody is actually in charge of it, “ states Anglen, “You basically just have about thirty distinct events all happening independently of one another, they just happen simultaneously in the same area.” As such, the agenda for any given First Friday is often a work in progress up until right

before the event takes place each month. Local businesses are encouraged to let the MCC know about their showings so they can be added to the calendar, but a large part of the First Friday fun can be found in exploring the evening, uncovering the unexpected. While the event is typically centered downtown, there has been an increase in participation from the North and West sides of Missoula. Some locations, such as the Zootown Arts Community Center in the Northside, have even expanded to hosting a Second Friday in order to give patrons more time to see all there is to see across Missoula’s art world. Missoula is fortunate to have this regular event to give voice to the artistic community in town, and citizens and businesses alike prosper from that inspiration. With such symbiosis, First Friday has stood the test of time and will continue to offer opportunities for growth and education. “It’s good for business as well as good for the community,” concludes Anglen.
