First things first - Celebrate! Announce your engagement in the Missoulian and online using the form on page 30. Having an engagement party? Set a date, choose a location, create a guest list, start a gift registry and mail invitations. Decide on a budget. See the handy worksheet on pages 54. Set the date. Narrow down your wedding date to a few weekends you feel most of your desired guests will be able to attend.

Start the guest list. A consultation with an event planner is a good way to get started. You may only need a few hours of their time to get you started, you may decide to hire one to handle everything from start to finish or just for the day of the event. Contact ceremony and reception venues. Some locations book up to a year in advance. Some may only be available for the ceremony and you will need a second location for the reception.

12 months & counting Shop for your gown. Choose a color scheme. Your friends and family will be clamoring to know who will be in your wedding party so let people know who you’ve chosen as soon as possible. Give your attendees ample time to arrange their schedules. Contact photographers, videographer and florists. Book a caterer. Most will do tastings and even create a cocktail just for you. Begin working on a menu. You may

want to consider special dietary needs if you have any guests with severe food allergies. Depending on budget and the number of guests with a non-traditional diet, you may need more than one choice for the main course. Decide on whether you want a DJ or live music at your reception. Record deposits and payments in your budget. Set a date for the Bachelor/Bachelorette parties. The Best Man/Maid of Honor have the honor of arranging this fun filled event.

8 months & counting Book a wedding officiant and musician/DJ. Discuss any special arrangements you want. Order your wedding invitations, announcements, place cards, menus and thank you cards. Order the bridesmaid and flower girl gowns. Purchase wedding gown. Custom gowns can take a while to make. If you are buying off the rack you want to give enough time to allow for alterations and a couple of fittings. Register. Sign up at several locations. Karli & Britnni

Y

our wedding day…it’s a day that every little girl dreams about. From an early age you start planning out the details, from selecting the perfect fairy tale gown to the number of bridesmaids and the type of cake you’ll serve your guests. But let’s face it. Planning a wedding isn’t child’s play. It’s tough. But have you ever thought of what it would be like to plan a wedding at the same time as your identical twin sister? Meet the Friia twins: Karli and Brittni. These Missoula twins have done many things together throughout their lives, including attending school family vacations and play dates. The list goes on and on. But even though they may be identical twins, the girls have always had very individual personalities, something they realized early on in their childhood.

“My sister and I have always had similar interest in hobbies, but very different personalities and tastes,” said Karli. Growing up, Karli and Brittni naturally developed their own characteristics and likes and soon, family and friends were able to tell them apart based on personalities instead of appearance. “It was no surprise that our weddings were completely different,” said Brittni. “Although we’re identical twins, our personalities are complete opposites. Our family jokingly suggested that we have a combined wedding, but we knew this was not a possibility because our tastes are far too different.” While it’s easy to tell there’s major love and affection between the sisters, their distinct styles and tastes were displayed in a lovely way: at their weddings.

Brittni—the elder twin by one minute— married the love of her life and husband Adam Hertz on August 20, 2011. Exchanging vows at St. Francis Xavier Church in Missoula, Brittni and Adam’s wedding is best described as traditional, with an Italian twist. “We wanted to look back on our wedding 20 years from now and not laugh,” said Brittni. “The colors and theme were kept simple for this very reason.” Coming from a strong Italian background, it was important for Brittni to incorporate as many authentic Italian traditions as possible into her big day. The three main Italian-style elements were confetti, having her ceremony at the Catholic parish she grew up attending and for an added helping of good luck, the Italian tradition of having something old, something new, something borrowed,

34 | Brides & Grooms | 2013

Karli & brian something blue and a gift. “The old was my nana’s veil, the new was my dress, the borrowed was the pearl clip in my hair, the blue was a rosary I carried with my bouquet and the gift was my wedding ring,” she said. Adding some additional sweetness to the ceremony was the confetti (candy almonds). These symbolize health, fertility, longevity, happiness and wealth and were shipped to Missoula from her aunt and uncle in Collefero, Italy and used as wedding favors for her guests. After exchanging vows in Missoula, the reception was held at a family friend’s ranch in Huson, where they were surrounded by 800 acres, a trout pond, mountains, a creek and horses. Vintage elements graced the wedding and reception venues with pearls, lace, peacock feathers and roses, while the groom and his

A

year after Brittni and Adam’s wedding, it was Karli’s turn to exchange vows with her husband Brian Hughes. For their big day—August 18, 2012— Karli and Brian headed to Montana’s Flathead Valley. “We really wanted to have our wedding on Flathead Lake,” said Karli. “It’s sentimental to us because we grew up spending every summer there and it remains our favorite getaway in the summertime.” For their rustic country chic wedding, Karli and Brian exchanged vows in Bigfork at Blessed John Paul II, followed by a reception at The Barn at Finley Point in Polson. “Brian and I wanted our wedding theme to be in accordance with our lifestyle, interests and venue surroundings,” said

www.bridesandgroomsmt.com | 35

Karli & bridesmaids

Karli. “We love the country and rustic décor, but didn’t want it to be overwhelming.” Playing up on the country style of her wedding, Karli added touches of wheat to her centerpieces, bouquets, boutonnières, pew ties and chair ties. For a personal touch, Karli and Brian had a logo of their initials made in the style of a branding iron—something that tied all of the various elements of the wedding together. Adding to the country chic theme, their wedding also had a s’mores buffet, BBQ dinner, burlap accents, a dance floor surrounded with linen-draped hay bales, hand-made whiskey barrels that served as bistro tables and country line and east coast swing dances performed by the wedding party. Plus, all the guests were dressed in cowboy boots and hats. And while it’s evident that the sisters have different styles, there is one thing they agree on when it comes to planning a wedding. “Remember, no matter how long and hard you plan there will always be at least one thing that doesn’t go as planned,” said Brittni. “A wedding shouldn’t be a competition or about impressing your guests. It’s to marry the love of your life and enjoy the celebration surrounded by the people who matter most.”

Echoing Brittni’s sentiment, Karli adds “Don’t expect everything to turn out perfectly. Something will inevitably happen that’s unforeseen. Just keep moving and have fun!” Brittni’s Vendors Photographer: Desiree Pollock Florist: Flower Bed - Missoula Caterer: All Events Catering - Missoula Rental: MT Party Rental - Missoula Video: Scenic Route Films - Missoula/Polson Cake: Black Cat Bakery - Missoula Hair: Boom Swagger - Missoula Make-up: Bella Sauvage - Missoula Karli’s Vendors Paper goods: Posh Paper Weddings - Missoula Photographer: Mountain Life Photography Whitefish Florist: Terrace Floral - Polson Caterer: Grills Gone Wild - Polson Rental: Northwest Rentals - Columbia Falls Video: Scenic Route Films - Missoula/Polson Cake: Miss Patti Cakes - Kalispell Hair: Her Alibi Salon - Bigfork Make-up: Dania Makeup - Missoula Jeweler: R.P. S

ince the time couples decided to sanctify marriage with a ceremony, fresh flowers have been an integral part of the proceedings. Weddings are a celebration of love and romance. What better way to show these sentiments than the fragile beauty and sweet fragrance of fresh flowers? The most important floral piece, of course, is the bridal bouquet. Many brides today prefer bouquets featuring only one color, though not the onetime favorite white. Though beautiful, an all white bouquet could easily clash with a white gown. White flowers may also blend into a white gown during the photo session, resulting in disappointing bridal

photos. However, if a white bouquet is to be used, consider off-white shades such as cream, ivory, or bridal white. In addition to considering color, it is important to coordinate the style of the bouquet with the bride’s figure and dress. Generally speaking, a simple formal dress requires a simple formal bouquet. It also helps to bring in a sample of the wedding gown and bridesmaids’ dress fabrics so that your florist is able to coordinate the colors of the flowers and ribbons in the bouquet. Personal flowers are another very important part of a complete wedding look. Bridesmaids’ bouquets, boutonnieres and corsages add greatly to the ceremony and provide you with gorgeous photographs

for years to come. Don’t be afraid to think creatively! For example, as an alternative to a rose corsage for mother, why not use a nosegay that can be placed in a silver plated tussie mussie holder that can also serve as her thank-you gift? Another popular idea is the use of matching boutonnieres; if you’re using gerbera daises in your attendants bouquet, why not use a single gerbera for the groomsmen boutonnieres? By all means don’t forget the cake! A wedding cake and table decorated with fresh flowers enhances the entire celebration. During the reception, the cake table is the focal point of the room, especially during the cake cutting. Your photographs will be fantastic with a fresh floral cake topper,

cascading blossoms and a garland of greens and flowers encircling the cake. This task can easily be coordinated with a little planning between your florist and cake maker. To complete the effect, try decorating the cake knife, server and champagne glasses with flowers. Everyone is cost conscious these days, so here is a little savings tip. Transform the wedding bouquets into reception centerpieces! By creating a “bridal mound” with basic greening and shaped floral foam, bouquets can be repositioned to create an arrangement with a whole new look for the reception. This not only saves money but also helps to blend the church and reception hall into one cohesive look.

No matter what type of wedding you are planning, be it a simple and relaxed outdoor wedding by the lake, or a formal church wedding and reception at the resort, the addition of flowers can be elegant, individualized and affordable.

re you wondering which wines to serve at your wedding? And, how much of each will you need? A bit of advice: keep it simple and stick to the basics! Here are a few tips to determine what you will need and how to get the most out of your wine budget. First you’ll want to have something for toasting. A sparkling wine is traditional. Champagne is the generally the first to come to mind, named for the Champagne region of France. Cava is from Spain, Asti comes from Italy and Sekt comes from Germany and Austria. Local vendors are always happy to discuss attributes of the wines they carry. If there is more than one in your budget that appeals to you, perhaps a small tasting party will help you decide. There are also a number of great domestic sparkling wines. Plan on about two glasses per guest. If the reception dinner will be very long, or you know that there will be many formal toasts, consider three glasses. When the toasts are complete, you’ll need something to serve with the meal. Don’t try to be too complex. Well-balanced wines should be the rule. As far as white wines

go, Chardonnay is very popular and works well with poultry, pork and many seafood dishes. Sauvignon Blanc also goes with a wide variety of seafood, as well as poultry, cheeses and pasta with a cream sauce. Pinot Grigio is refreshing when the weather is warm, complements most appetizers, grilled and sautéed, and holds up well with spicier entrees. For red wines, Cabernet Sauvignon and Zinfandel are bold, popular choices that complement a menu that includes beef, barbeque or pastas with red sauces. Once you have selected your wine, you will need to determine how much wine you need for the amount of people you’re having. Approximately 40-50% of your guests will drink white wine, 30-40% will drink red wine, and about 10 to 15% would prefer a non-wine option. Also, consider your crowd: more women usually means more white wine drinkers, more men might mean more red wine. At most weddings or big parties, the people of wine-drinking age will average at least two to three glasses. At about six small glasses to a bottle of wine, that means you would need 34 –50 bottles (3-4 cases) of wine for 100 guests. If you want to cover all of your bases, I would recommend having enough to serve each person two glasses of either white or red and expect to have some left over. Too much is better than too little. When choosing your wines, always remember, this is a party! Your guests are celebrating the union of two people special to them. Keep it simple, within your budget and enjoy!

do Relax. Remember, your guests are here to celebrate you. Don’t fret over each individual guest’s happiness; after all it’s your big day! Enjoy it, dance the night away and have fun because if you’re having a good time, your guests are guaranteed to have a good time. do Steal little moments. As brides before you can attest, your wedding day goes by quickly. Be sure to take a few moments where it’s just you and your groom where you pause and soak up the magical moments from the ceremony to the photos to the wedding celebration. do Be yourself. Don’t make any drastic changes to your appearance right before your wedding day. Be sure to schedule facials, spray tans, haircuts and highlights a few weeks in advance to help ensure you look and feel your best.

do Be mindful of budget. It’s likely that many of your guests are spending quite a bit of time and money to attend your wedding and most likely, they’re very happy to do it. Be sure you’re considerate of the time and money they’ve invested to be at your wedding. Don’t gripe to them about the cost of your wedding. Instead, express your gratitude of their attendance. do Pick the right music. A DJ or live band can make or break your wedding reception. Be sure you’re very clear with him or her regarding music preferences and the flow of the reception. do Eat. This may seem like a no brainer, but many brides and grooms are unable to eat on their wedding day. Have snacks on hand (or give this task to one of your lovely bridesmaids) and be sure to enjoy the cocktail hour and dinner. After all, you’ve invested a lot of time and money into making sure the menu is just right. Enjoy it!

do be gracious hosts. Thank everyone for coming and stay until the last guest leaves. If you must leave before the party is to end, announce to your guests the time of your departure so everyone gets a chance to wish you well. Make sure to appoint someone to act in your stead as host to care for guests until they leave. don’t be late. This applies to everyone. Don’t sweat the small stuff. The day has arrived. You have accomplished all you can. Now is the time to smile and enjoy yourself. No one will ever know or remember what was on the list of things not done. Don’t have a cash bar. Nothing sours a guest’s mood quicker than continuously having to dig into wallets for drinks. Here are a few acceptable ways around spending a lot on beverages. Consider renting a soda fountain, especially if there

are going to be a lot of children. Sweet tea is very attractive in a tall glass of ice with a lemon wedge and mint sprig.Today’s micro brews are very popular, have one or two on tap. Some suppliers will give you a price break for purchasing cases of wine. Sangria is a festive option for serving a large number of guests. Signature cocktails for the evening will help control the price of the alcohol purchased. don’t let guests drink and drive. Everyone knows the key ingredients to any party are guests, food and beverages. Make travel arrangements for guests that over indulge. Don’t be that wedding. You know the one where there wasn’t enough ... food, drink, toilet paper, etc. It is better to over estimate the supplies needed than to have the momentum end due to lack of planning.

the price

you pay By Rebecca Wagner

F

or many brides the most exciting part of wedding planning is shopping for their bridal gown. They often bring their friends and family to create an exciting and memorable experience. And it's true; gown shopping can be lots of fun! But it can also be very stressful, especially if you're on a budget. A wedding dress is probably the most expensive garment a woman will ever buy, which is why it's important to understand exactly what you are getting for your money. As you begin your search for the dress of your dreams you'll notice not only a variety of styles, but also a large range in prices from too good to be true Internet prices, to "That's more than my car cost!" Say Yes to the Dress prices. So what exactly makes one dress cost $200 and another $8,000? Aside from the name of the designer on the tag, there are several factors

www.bridesandgroomsmt.com | 59

hixson family photography

that determine not only the cost, but also the quality of the gown. The most obvious factor that determines the price of a gown is the fabric. This year lace is very popular and tends to be more expensive than other fabrics, but lace can also vary greatly from one type to another. French Alencon lace is often used on better quality bridal gowns. Alencon lace is made when a flat Chantilly lace is re-embroidered with a thin cord to give the pattern more texture and depth. It can easily run anywhere from $100 to $300 a yard, while beaded designs can go for even more. Compare this to the basic polyester lace you'd find at your local fabric store, which looks more like grandma's curtains than something you'd want a dress made of, and it soon becomes obvious why that lace gown is priced so high. It's not just lace; even a

simple satin can vary greatly in cost and quality. A good quality bridal satin will drape and flow exactly as the designer intended, while a knockoff purchased online is often made from cheap, pajama quality satin that hangs limply from the hanger. Probably the most overlooked aspect of a gown is the inner construction. The quality of the lining, the amount of built-in boning and the inner corset all contribute to a perfect fit. A well-made dress will stay up with no puckers or wrinkles even when worn strapless. If the salesperson is pushing you to buy an expensive strapless bra to make the dress fit right, take a closer look at the inside of the dress. Unless you are large busted or want a little extra padding, you shouldn't need a special bra to achieve a good fit. The same is true with a petticoat or crinoline slip. If you want a little extra fullness, add a crinoline, but if the dress doesn't look right without one, then it's likely

mdk photography

www.bridesandgroomsmt.com | 61

that the manufacturer cut corners. A poorly constructed gown may sport a cheaper price tag, but keep in mind, by the time you add a special bra, Spanx, and a crinoline, you could easily add $200 or more to the price. The amount and quality of ornamentation on the dress can also greatly affect its retail price. Swarovski crystals, freshwater pearls and rhinestones create the wow factor that many brides are looking for. A high-end designer will choose only the finest quality crystals and beads to be hand sewn onto the gown. A lower priced dress will have glass beads and plastic sequins instead of crystals. The cheapest dresses skip the beading altogether and actually have plastic sequins glued directly onto the fabric. Small Swarovski crystals are sold for about 25 cents each at craft stores. Keeping in mind that a wedding gown may have hundreds of these, all individually sewn by hand, you can see why the bigger the

The final factor in determining the price of your gown is the skill of the artisans involved in making it; from the designer who envisioned it and sketched it, the skilled seamstress who turned the sketch into a finished product, to the beader who painstakingly attached each and every crystal. This is why a true original designer gown will always cost more than an inferior knock off, or a mass produced dress sold in a chain store, and it will always fit and look better too. When shopping for your dream gown it’s easy to follow your heart instead of your head, but remember, you get what you pay for. That online bargain may look great in the picture, but if you think you’re getting a $1,200 dress for $200, you may be sorely disappointed when you receive a $200 Halloween costume.

bling, the higher the price.

You’re not walking around with a mirror, so have one bridesmaid responsible for bobby pins and hairspray and another bridesmaid responsible for make-up touch-ups. Your skin. Getting a facial at least 7-10 days before your wedding day will help your makeup look picture perfect. If you are having your makeup done by a professional the day of your wedding, it is a good idea to purchase the makeup being used. You will need to touch up throughout the day, especially after all the hugs and kisses. If you will be doing your own makeup, consider scheduling an appointment with a professional beforehand. This will give you the confidence you need to achieve the look you are going for plus the opportunity to inventory your makeup.

Tattoos. If you are looking to cover a tattoo, a professional can help show you the right products and how to apply them to achieve a natural look. Waterproof. This is not the day to have makeup run or smudge. Foundation to mascara - choose waterproof. Visine. Rarely have you had this many photos taken of you in one day. Keep your eyes bright and your outlook upbeat by keeping the red out. Waxing. If you are planning on having any body or facial waxing, be sure to schedule it at least 3 days prior, possibly 10 if you haven’t tried it before. Sensitivity, redness and swelling can occur and you want to give your body time to recover.

Tanning. A little bit of color can help you achieve an overall healthy look. As a bride, the white of your dress will make a little color seem a lot darker. Your smile. There are a lot of over the counter products available that can give good results but save them for another time. Your wedding is not the time to experiment, consult a professional. You want a clean fresh smile, not one that glows in the dark. Don’t forget the rest of your body. Scheduling a body scrub will ensure your shoulders, arms and back will be silky smooth. This is also a very good way to unwind before the big day. Plan to have your nails done the day before the festivities. If you have never had long nails, now is not the time to have a nail tech apply them.

Be yourself. You are beautiful.
