GRIZZLY GAME DAY | Q&A
Semenza relishes opportunity Griz kicker works back into special teams rotation as kickoff specialist AMIE JUST 406mtsports.com
A different, but familiar name for Montana trotted onto the field at Holt Arena to take on kickoff duties for the Griz on Saturday against Idaho State. Tim Semenza, a sophomore from San Diego, was back on the field for the first time since last year’s loss at Northern Colorado. Making the most of his first opportunity in a while, Semenza booted four of his seven kickoffs into the end zone for touchbacks. Because of his efforts, he was Montana’s nominee for Big Sky Special Teams Player of the Week. 406mtsports.com caught up with Semenza this week and checked in with how he’s adjusted to being Montana’s new kickoff specialist. Q: You got back onto the field on Saturday for kickoffs. What were those conversations like with the coaching staff this week ahead of the Idaho State game? A: It was kind of, all week long, working on where we wanted the ball to be placed. Obviously I hadn’t done it yet, so just working on practicing it and letting me know what they wanted, really verbalizing that to me. Then, just working on it with them. I didn’t know until Thursday that we were going to go. It felt really good. Q: How do you feel? Several touchbacks and some that were really, really close to getting in there. A: It’s always great playing indoors. You get that weather control, so that was good. I definitely had a lot of excitement and a lot of adrenaline going into that game. It had been a while, so I was really, really excited to get back on the field. Q: Your season last year didn’t go exactly as planned. How did you bounce back from some of those setbacks? A: Just hard work and the support of my teammates. That’s something different about this team that I think people don’t realize is we’re much, much closer than

Having their support, Eric (Williams) and (Brandon) Purdy, and (Matthew O’Donaghue) and Caleb (Mitchell). They’re all great guys and they all picked me up really, really well. Just pushed me to get better and pushed me to work hard. Q: Did you do anything extra to get your mind right and get in a more positive attitude? A: I have my music that I listen to like I think everybody else does but other than that, not really. Just trying to stay positive, keep a smile on my face and enjoy it. You don’t get to do this for very long. Try to enjoy it while you get to. Q: What music is your go-to? A: Before games I try to calm down, just ease my mind. I listen to reggae or old classic rock or something like that. The Eagles are one of my favorites and the Dewey Brothers are good, too. It just keeps me calm and gets me ready to go. Q: So being from San Diego, how did you adjust to the Montana weather? A: It was definitely tough my first year. It was cold. I remember being out here on a practice and I was not ready for it the first season. You get used to it. I have family back in New York, so when I’d go visit them when I was younger, I kinda had an idea of what it was but nothing’s

huge and being able to be flexible is really, really big. Coming out and doing that is really important to my prep for practice. Q: Do you have any pregame superstitions or anything like that? A: I don’t think so. I just have the same routine every game. I guess that’s kind of a superstition but not really. Q: What’s your favorite thing about being a Griz? A: I’d have to say my teammates and the fan base that we have here. All these guys are here, they’re gonna work out cold like Montana cold. I’d never experi- with you and they’re all gonna give you 110 percent every single day. They expect enced that before. Just always bundling the same from you and that’s awesome. up, stay prepared, because Montana I think it’s great that we have these guys weather can change in the span of one hour, so you gotta be ready. Now that I’ve here. Awesome teammates. And the fan base is just incredible. The amount of gone through two winters, I think I got fans that we get out here every single the hang of it. It’s not too bad anymore. Q: You’re the first on the field every game, supporting us, no matter what it’s win or lose, it’s great. Awesome people, day at practice. What makes you some of the nicest people I’ve ever met in want to be the first one out here? Missoula. I really, really enjoy it. A: I kinda have my own routine as far as stretching and warming up goes. GetAmie Just covers Griz football for the ting out here and being able to do that helps me get my mind where I need to be Missoulian, among other things. Follow her on Twitter @Amie_Just or email her at and my body where it needs to be to go into practice. Warming up my muscles is Amie.Just@406mtsports.com.

GRIZZLY GAME DAY | JAMES BANKS
Banks Continued
Southern Miss. But a meeting regarding going to a bowl game never came. Instead, players and coaches found out their program had been disbanded via internet blogs. The university president didn’t even dignify the team with a meeting about the decision until days later. At the drop of a hat, scores of players were without a home. One of those players was James Banks, now Montana’s starting will linebacker. “We heard rumors midway through the season,” Banks said. “We were like, ‘No, this isn’t happening. It hasn’t happened in 20 years or whatever.’ And then we beat Southern Miss to become bowl eligible for the first time in (10) years. We were waiting on a team meeting and we hear, ‘All right it’s done.’ “I (found out) on our school blog or whatever with teammates. I think a lot of our coaches found out that way too. When we all found out, we were all calling and texting each other, ‘What’s going on?’ We finally got word from our head coach and we had the meeting with our president who finally told us to our face.” And with that, Banks had to find a third school in as many years. Banks’ passion for football began at an early age when he started playing youth tackle football when he was six or seven. He took that passion and ran with it, playing football at some level every year. He was a letterman all four years in high school at Sheldon High School in Eugene, Ore. GRIZZLY GAME DAY | STRENGTHS
THE EDGE Missoulian reporter KYLE HOUGHTALING assesses the strengths of both teams
QUARTERBACK: If quarterbacks were traded on the stock market, you’d want to buy University of Montana QB Gresch Jensen right now. The redshirt freshman is trending upward after a 23-for-35, 360-yard passing performance against Idaho State last Saturday. Sell now on North Dakota’s senior signal caller Keaton Studsrud. He has four picks to just two touchdowns in his last two starts.
Technology to drive productivity
OFFENSIVE LINE: Why has Jensen looked so comfortable in the pocket as a redshirt freshman? Maybe it’s because he has senior left tackle David Reese, and his 41 consecutive starts, protecting his blind side. The Fighting Hawks put their faith in three freshman up front, though UND’s O-Line did clear the way for 314 rushing yards last week against Northern Colorado. RUNNING BACK: The ground game has been one of the few bright spots for North Dakota (2-4, 1-2 BSC) this season. The Fighting Hawks have both preseason All-American John Santiago and preseason All-Big Sky RB Brady Oliveira in the backfield. Both are averaging over 6 yards per carry. WIDE RECEIVERS/TE: Against Idaho State, nine different Grizzlies caught at least one pass, and all four of Jensen’s touchdowns went to a different wide out. North Dakota has just six receiving touchdowns all year. DEFENSIVE LINE: With Montana’s Jesse Sims, who had 2.5 sacks last week against Idaho State, emerging as another pass-rushing threat along with Big Sky’s sack leader Tucker Schye, it’s hard to pick against the Griz. LINEBACKERS: North Dakota, which predominately runs a 3-4 defense, has been decimated by injury at linebacker. Freshman Cam Hunt had an interception in his UND debut last week, but the Fighting Hawks are just trying to put the pieces together. Montana’s starting trio in the middle pieced together 38 total tackles last week. CB/SAFETY: Not only are the Griz dead last in the Big Sky in pass defense, they rank 120th out of the 123 in the FCS. Even without reigning Big Sky Defensive Player of the Year Cole Reyes (out against Montana), UND has still been better.
• Multi-function copiers • Aquos interactive boards • Sharp lcd display boards • 5 Local/factory trained technicians on hand
SPECIAL TEAMS: Kicker Tim Semenza, stepping on the field for the first time all season against Idaho State, solved Montana’s kickoff woes. He doubled UM’s touchback total on the year with four kicks not coming out of the end zone last week. UND’s Santiago is second in the conference in average kick return yardage and now Montana can keep the ball out of his hands. INTANGIBLES: It’s a homecoming unlike any Griz fan has seen since 2015. Montana is coming off its first back-to-back road winning streak in two seasons and it earned the Griz a bump to No. 24 in the Stats FCS Top 25 poll. A win against a beleaguered UND squad — 11 Fighting Hawks are listed on the injury report — puts the Grizzlies in striking distance for a playoff berth.

GRIZZLY GAME DAY
HOW WE SEE THE BIG SKY Just in time for their game with the Montana Grizzlies, the North Dakota Fighting Hawks have found their footing. A three-game skid came to an end with an offensive explosion against visiting Northern Colorado last Saturday. Injury-riddled UND piled up 562 yards in a 48-38 homecoming win over the fading Bears. North Dakota’s dominance up front and time of possession were eyeopening. The Hawks piled up 314 rushing yards while limiting Northern Colorado to 18 on 22 carries. And UND possessed the ball for more than 37 minutes. In other words, the Grizzlies are going to have their hands full today. North Dakota is their toughest foe since Eastern Washington and we all know what happened in that heartbreaker. It’s worth noting that UND is 0-3 on the road this season. It hasn’t even really been close. Stumbling at Utah on opening day was understandable. Losing at South Dakota and UC Davis by a combined score of 93-31 was not understandable. Bottom line: Montana should win its third game in a row this weekend. That would give the Griz plenty to feel good about as they take next Saturday off and prepare for a showdown at Weber State in two weeks.
