GRIZZLY GAME DAY
HOW WE SEE THE BIG SKY BILL SPELTZ 406mtsports.com
So the visiting team has won the last two meetings between the Montana and Montana State football teams. That trend should continue Saturday, with the Grizzlies winning at Bozeman. Or at least that’s how it shapes up on paper. As a Griz fan, it’s easy to like what UM coach Bob Stitt has been saying this week. He’s not beating around the bush. His comments are much more compelling than they were leading up to last year’s Brawl of the Wild. “... (F)or our fans and everybody involved, you gotta win the ball game,” he said during his press conference earlier this week. “It is very, very important in our state. We’ve prepared for a long time mentally for this thing and physically, but more mentally. I think our guys are really gonna be ready to go and play great football.” The Grizzlies have been playing some mighty fine football with wins in five of their last six games. But there are still major questions to be answered. Let me play the devil’s advocate for a moment: Who have the Grizzlies beaten that’s worth a darn? The first team that comes to mind is No. 24 Northern REBEKAH WELCH, Missoulian Arizona. But the Jacks were without their Montana defensive end Chris Favoroso tackles UNC running back Brandon Cartangena during a play. GRIZZLY GAME DAY | MICK DELANEY
ALL IN THE FAMILY Mick Delaney’s roots with the Griz run deep AMIE JUST 406mtsports.com
Mick Delaney came to play against Eastern Washington. Through just one quarter of play, the senior racked up two special teams tackles — tying his career game-high. “It was a weird, weird day, a weird game,” Delaney said of a Sept. 23 contest in Missoula. “Honestly, the best game of my life. ... Through one quarter, I was excited. We were playing really, really well and we were beating Eastern. Obviously, I’m excited.” After Brandon Purdy drilled a 24-yard field goal to put the Grizzlies up 17-3 on the Eagles, Delaney and the special teams unit trotted back onto the field and huddled up. In the huddle, Delaney gave the same speech he routinely gives. “I always tell those guys in the huddle before kickoff, ‘Get excited,’” Delaney said. “The game’s too hard not to get excited so, I was telling them that, whoever gets the next tackle, go celebrate.” Eric Williams booted the kickoff 54 yards to the 11-yard line. The Eastern Washington return man brought it back 16 yards to the Eastern Washington 27-yard line where Dante Olson and Jed Nagler took him down. Delaney ran over to where Olson stood to celebrate. Jumping in the air together in celebratory fashion, their legs tangled together. “I came down and it buckled underneath me,” Delaney said of his leg. “I think I blacked out, honestly, but I will never forget the sound — the sound and the feeling it made. It was a snap, grind, snap. I’ll never, ever forget that.” The team’s athletic trainers came over to Delaney where he lay on the field. Trying to figure out the extent of his potential injury, they asked him what was wrong. TOMMY MARTINO, Missoulian “’Everything’s gone in my knee,’” Montana’s Mick Delaney runs with his teammates during the team’s introduction Delaney replied. “Didn’t need an MRI to before playing Savannah State University in September. know that.”
Several stories up, his grandfather — former Montana football coach Mick Delaney — stood alone on top of the press box watching his grandson’s college career come to an abrupt end. The elder Delaney usually works the games for TV, but not this one. “It was heart-wrenching,” he said of his grandson’s injury. “I saw it happen and immediately I thought, ‘Gosh darn it, it’s a knee.’” He hoped his eyes deceived him. He hoped the injury was something less severe. But as he watched the trainers attend to his grandson, tears began to well in his eyes and he made his way to the field. “I knew he’d need help getting into the training room at halftime,” the elder Delaney said. “It was gut-wrenching. It brought tears to my eyes to think that his fifth year would end like that.” The verdict came in a few days later. He snapped his ACL and MCL in half and his meniscus was nowhere to be found. “That was the end of my career,” he said. “I came to terms with it pretty quickly. I gave myself 10 minutes to feel bad on the table on the sideline and after that 10 minutes, just kinda, there was nothing I could do about it. Just had to move forward, keep moving forward. “That’s pretty much what’s gotten me through it to this point. I can rest my head at night knowing I’ve done everything I’ve wanted to in my football career. I’ve come way further than even I thought I would.” The young Delaney has been on football fields his entire life. His father, Mike, played for the Griz in college and his grandfather coached football in varying capacities from the 1960s to 2014 after suiting up at Montana Western. “Being that close to football as a kid, it obviously changes and molds who you are growing up,” he said. “... It’s shaped who I am and more aspects of my life that I can’t even imagine. It’s something that’s been ingrained in me since I was a young kid and multiple, multiple positives impacted my life in that direction.” His grandpa coached the running backs

GRIZZLY GAME DAY | MICK DELANEY at Colorado State under Sonny Lubick from 1993-2007. During that span, Delaney went to most of those games, including all nine bowl appearances. “Looking back, it’s unbelievable,” Delaney said of going to those games as a kid. “As a kid, I didn’t appreciate it as I should have. I was on the sideline for all these huge games, all these crazy cool experiences that, as an 8- or 9-year-old kid, you can’t register how cool they are. “I’ll always remember his last game at CSU. We were on the field forever after the game. I think it was my mom that said, ‘Look around. Take it in because you might never get to experience something like this again.’ I was lucky enough I got to experience it for the next decade of my life, but that always stands out in my mind, just how cool football is and how big of an impact it’s had on my life.” Even though Delaney grew up surrounded by all things football and played the sport since he was a kid, he considered himself a hockey player first and foremost until his sophomore year of high school. He played hockey for 14 to 15 years, suiting up on travel teams and up in Canada for a time. Everything changed when he broke his arm.
“I don’t know what it was, but a switch flipped,” Delaney said. “I kinda dropped hockey cold turkey, honestly. I decided I wanted to be a football player from there on out.” Delaney played wide receiver at Bozeman High, as well as contributing to special teams for the Hawks. Yes, Bozeman. Yes, Delaney grew up in enemy territory. The future Griz drove past Bobcat Stadium every day on his route to school. “Every day. Every single day,” Delaney said of his daily drive. “We’ve moved since I’ve been in high school, so I don’t do it as much when I go back to Bozeman, but I always snicker to myself as I drive by it.” Delaney wasn’t the only Montana fan at his school, but he was a maroon dot in the vast sea of blue. He had the reputation of “being known as a Griz fan.” The notoriety elevated even more his senior year. In March of his junior year, Delaney was at track practice with Ben Weyer — a future Griz — when he found out his grandpa was given the interim head coach position at Montana. “We didn’t know if it was gonna happen because he just retired,” Delaney said. “Then we found out. The first person I told was Ben Weyer, because he was going
here, so he got excited. I’ll always remember that.” Delaney wanted to be a Griz before his grandpa was hired as Montana’s 36th head coach in 2012. His hiring just made the passion burn hotter. “I was already a huge fan before that ever happened,” Delaney said. “Being able to have the possibility to come play here and then having him coach here, just was the stars aligning almost. It was a cool experience.” Delaney said he made it clear he wanted to play for Montana, whatever it took. “It was kind of set in stone,” he said. “I made that decision early if I had the possibility to play here, it was absolutely 100 percent where I was coming.” Even though the elder Delaney knew how impassioned his grandson was about playing for Montana, he fused the roles of grandfather and coach during the recruiting process. “In these situations, there’s quite a few instances where a coach gets to coach his son, but where he gets to recruit his grandson, it is weird, if that’s the word,” Coach Delaney said. “It was real different. “I’ve always been very, very honest with my own children and my grandchildren. I
encouraged him at that time as a senior to take a real close look at Western, Tech and Carroll because he could go there and be a star. I knew he was gonna have to work and work and struggle to play for the Griz because that’s the type of athlete he was. “He would have nothing to do with it. His dream and goal was always to play for the University of Montana. He would rather come here as basically a walk-on rather than go to one of the other schools on scholarship.” The young Delaney added: “It was something I’ll always remember and cherish because it was nothing near traditional recruiting.” Delaney’s Bozeman squad — seeded No. 5 in the 2012 Class AA playoffs — upset top-seeded Kalispell Glacier at Legends Stadium 34-21 to advance to the state championship. In an already emotional moment, grandpa temporarily switched into coach mode. “He asked me after my semifinal game,” Delaney said. “Some would call it an official offer. It took me about half a second to say yes. From there on, it was smooth sailing. I became a Griz officially.” One goal of Delaney’s was achieved. PLEASE SEE DELANEY, Page E18

GRIZZLY GAME DAY | STRENGTHS
THE EDGE Missoulian reporter KYLE HOUGHTALING assesses the strengths of both teams
QUARTERBACK: Montana State’s Chris Murray is a true double threat, rushing for 1,083 yards and throwing for 1,499 more. That gives him more total yards than Montana’s Gresch Jensen (168 run, 2,205 pass). Jensen, however, has put up his totals in fewer games, and a QB’s grade should weigh on the ability of his arm, where Jensen has the edge. OFFENSIVE LINE: Montana State has allowed the least amount of sacks in the conference, but part of that is due to the Bobcats’ rushing attack. Where MSU’s buffet bruisers have shown their strength is in fourth-down short-yardage situations. Bozeman has converted on a Big Sky-best 76 percent (16 of 21) of its fourth downs. RUNNING BACK: Montana’s running backs actually stack up well against the Bobcats’ true rushers, as Jeremy Calhoun and Alijah Lee have more yards on the ground than their counterparts. But remember Murray? The Cats’ QB is basically a third running back and with him leading the way, the league’s No. 1 rushing offense has the Griz beat on the ground. Side note: Troy Andersen — a true freshman out of Dillon — has 451 yards rushing. The dude’s a beast. WIDE RECEIVERS/TE: Seriously, Griz fans are spoiled with this receiving corps, and it’s only going to get better. Think about this: Jerry Louie-McGee and Justin Calhoun are both sophomores, Keenan Curran is a junior and Samori Toure is a freshman. Those are your top four receivers, accounting for 2,258 yards receiving so far this season.

Parrish said 11 law enforcement agencies, fire departments and ambulance services will be working together during the game, and he noted that local law enforcement agencies will be conducting extra patrols across the Gallatin Valley before, during and after the game to catch impaired drivers. The MSU athletic department encourages all fans attending the game to review its fan guide at bit. ly/2017FanGuide to familiarize themselves with all policies — including prohibited items — in order to ensure quick and easy entry into Bobcat Stadium.
DEFENSIVE LINE: The Grizzlies might have the best front seven in the country. Montana is No. 1 in the FCS in total tackles for loss at 9.2 per game. That helps make up for UM’s 111th ranking in passing yards allowed (which has improved in the last three weeks). LINEBACKERS: MSU middle linebacker and Drummond grad Mac Bignell is downright mean, and he’s 12th in the Big Sky in total tackles and seventh in tackles for loss. The Griz, however, have all three backers in the top six for total takedowns. CB/SAFETY: We mentioned the Griz are 111th out of 123 teams in passing yards allowed, right? Good thing Montana State’s passing offense is ranked 107th. SPECIAL TEAMS: Montana State’s punter Jered Padmos has the conference’s No. 1 punt average in the Big Sky, but the Cats are next to last in field-goal percentage which has hurt in a couple of close games this year. Meanwhile, Montana’s Brandon Purdy has become a reliable option booting the ball. Scoring > field position. INTANGIBLES: It’s the Brawl of the Wild, people, throw out the records (and the Grizzlies’ 72-38-5 advantage in the series). Do the Griz want to erase last year’s loss to the Cats from their memory and lock up a playoff spot? Sure. Do the Cats want to end the trend of losing to the Griz in Bozeman, while ruining their rival’s party? Absolutely. These two teams have plenty to play for.

that experience is, I don’t think I’m the most worthy person to do it, but I’m not gonna say no, if I’m asked. It was an unbelievably cool experience. I’ll never forget it.” Even though Delaney won’t be in full pads on Saturday in his hometown against the Bobcats, the game itself still means the world. Delaney is the only player on the Griz roster from Bozeman, and he has several high school teammates who wear blue. As he affirmed with six no’s, talking to them is “not something you do” this week. But it goes deeper than that. Like most Montana products, this week and this game means more than Delaney could put into words. “I don’t want to undersell how important it is,” Delaney said. He’s played one Brawl in Bobcat Stadium and he considers the 54-35 win among his best sports memories. “That was the top five coolest games I’ve ever been a part of,” Delaney said. “Just winning in Bozeman, playing on that field, I wish I could give you some explanation of how amazing it is, but speechless is one of the best ways to put it.” On the flip side, the loss
in Washington-Grizzly Stadium last year elicited the most gut-wrenching feeling for Delaney. Seeing Montana State hoist the Great Divide Trophy on Montana’s home turf broke Delaney’s heart. “I lost the state championship on a last second field goal against our rivals in high school and I was more gutted after last year’s loss of Griz-Cat than I was after that game,” Delaney said. “One thing I’m thankful for, even though I’m not playing anymore, is seeing those seniors, knowing how heartbroken they were and there was nothing they could do about it. “They didn’t get another game. They didn’t get another opportunity. I hurt for them, but I was so, so thankful that I got another shot. Granted, my shot’s not the same thing I thought it was gonna be at the time, but I’m glad to be a part of this team that has another shot at those guys. “I’ll never forget that feeling after last year. Everybody that was associated with that game last year will never forget that feeling. I hope the complacency that we had never comes back. I’ll forever have lost to the Cats in Wa-Griz my last time playing there, but I have the opportunity to have never lost to the Cats in Bozeman.”
