ith all of the digital options at our fingertips today, wedding stationery has remained a time honored tradition. In addition to communicating important information with guests, wedding stationery communicates the character of your wedding and lets guests know what to expect. Working with a good stationer is key – from budgeting, to printing technique, to etiquette an experienced stationer will help guide you through the process from beginning to end. Here are some things you will want to consider before your wedding stationery consultation. Define your wedding spirit Much in the same way that branding communicates the vision of a business, wedding stationery communicates the spirit of the occasion and sets the tone for the event. Whether your wedding style will be elegant and traditional, fun and casual, modern and bright, modern and minimalistic, rustic or refined, your wedding invitation suite should be as unique as you. Knowing your colors, your venue, and communicating your personal style with your stationer will help ensure your theme is carried through all of your wedding paper from save the date cards and invitations through your day-of materials like programs, menus, escort cards, welcome packets and itineraries to the thank you cards you send after the event to
14
commemorate the special memories made with loved ones. Know your budget Wedding stationery should account for 3%-8% of your total wedding budget. Depending on your vision for your wedding suite, number of guests, and printing style, invitations can run from $3-$100 a set! This is a huge range, so understanding your budget will help your stationer recommend options that will be affordable while capturing the unique spirit of your special day. One key tip to remember is that your total number of invitations does not equal your total number of guests, since you are mailing to households, not individuals. Show your style The sky is the limit when it comes to paper types and printing options. Ask your stationer about embellishments that match your unique vision whether this be die cuts, pocket folds, leather ties, creative use of color and pattern, or the timeless elegance of a classic invitation with black text on a cream double-thick cotton stock. It's important ask to see and feel samples of different types of paper and printing processes during your consultation. Whether using a classic method like raised-ink thermography, showing formality with a process like engraving, or setting yourself apart with a foil or letterpress
piece, your stationer will be well equipped to walk you through all of the different combinations of papers, formats, and embellishments that will reflect the distinctive essence of your wedding. Plan ahead In a world in which people seem to become busier by the minute, save the date cards are becoming a necessity. Sending a save the date card can be useful for guests coming in from out of town. It is also recommended to send a save the date if your wedding will be during a busy time of year like summer or a holiday season. Save the date cards are typically informal, do not require a reply, and are sent 6-8 months in advance. Generally brides will order their invitations 4-5
months ahead of their event and mail them approximately 6-10 weeks before the big day. You can consult with your stationer about your save the date cards, invitation suite, thank you notes, and day-of materials all at the same time. It is recommended that all of your wedding stationery be done through the same stationer to ensure your suite is cohesive and consistent across all pieces. –Supplied by Noteworthy

edding planning isn’t complete without a pampering plan for the beautiful bride. What kinds of beauty routines do you want done before the big day? Hair trimmed, or maybe a whole new ‘do? Is full-face makeup your thing, or just a light lip gloss? Plan to be tan, or a natural glow? Thinking of — and scheduling out — these design details months in advance of the big day will result in a relaxed, beaming and beautiful bride walking down the aisle. 5-6 MONTHS BEFORE While there are numerous tips and tricks for last-minute freshening-up for the big day, there is no substitute for a solid foundation of healthy living. With most engagements lasting a year, this is an opportune time to examine your lifestyle and take steps with long-term benefits. Five to six months before your wedding, heighten the focus on yourself and your health. Stress shows, so first and foremost keep bad vibes at bay by introducing a stress-relief regimen. Reserve at least one night a week to relax and do what you need to do for you, as long as it’s not wedding related. Not only will this ease your mind, but it can help alleviate physical problems as well. Wedding planning can be a monumental task, and it’s important to not lose sight of your personal needs.

One of the biggest beauty benefits you can secure during the hectic weddingplanning phase is to allow yourself time for plenty of quality sleep. Treat yourself to a new pillow, cushy sleeping mask, or a sound machine — whatever it takes to get some good z’s. Reduce your caffeine intake as well in order to get better rest and the added bonus of brighter skin and teeth. Sleeping with a humidifier can also help improve dry skin and hair over time. This is also the prime time to consider big-picture changes such as growing out your hair, focusing on skin care, or losing weight. Many brides wish to drop a few pounds before the wedding, but last-minute crash diets are dangerously ineffective and result in a sickly appearance. Instead, take small, manageable steps now in order to receive long-lasting results. Even something as simple as cutting out soda or beer for a few months can go a long way with weight loss and overall health. Drinking plenty of water will help benefit your body and mind, as well as eating a balanced and nutritious diet. If you have weight-loss goals, consult with your doctor to develop a healthy nutrition and fitness plan. Regular, lowimpact, exercises such as walking and yoga help maintain mental acuity and muscle tone. Whatever your goal is, be wary of weight fluctuations after being fitted for your dress.

Keeping your body healthy on the inside will cause noticeable improvements to the outside, but a good skincare regimen will boost your bridal glow to its extreme. If you don’t already have one, start a good cleansing and moisturizing program. Use gentle cleansers, avoiding sulfates, and be diligent about applying lotion and sunscreen. Also consider meeting with a dermatologist for any larger skin issues, 28
or setting appointments for monthly facials. Hair needs love too, and establishing a regular conditioning routine now will reap luscious locks later. For extremely damaged hair, schedule a series of deep conditioning or keratin treatments at a salon. For home-brewed solutions, try adding a few drops of vitamin E oil into your regular conditioner, or home hair mask.
When it comes to hair that you don’t want to cultivate, such as legs and under arms, it’s worth weighing the option for laser hair removal early on in your beauty planning. This permanent process requires multiple treatments spaced over several months, so it’s a decision to be made well in advance under the guidance of an experienced dermatologist. Whatever you decide for your beauty plan, there are no wrong answers as long as you do what’s right for you. Do as much, or as little, as you are comfortable with. Real beauty comes from being yourself, so don’t let others dictate any changes. Remember that your soon-tobe-spouse decided to marry you as you are, and you are who they love. 3-4 MONTHS BEFORE At least three to four months in advance, be sure to schedule your
initial hair and makeup consultations. Arrange for the appointments on the same day so that you can see how everything looks altogether. Gather plenty of pictures of styles that you like, and remember to bring along your veil or any other headpieces that you’d like to incorporate into your look. It also helps to wear clothing in the same shade as your dress so that the trial run is consistent with the wedding day. If you desire to do any drastic changes to your hair, make plans sooner than later in order to have plenty of cushion for corrections if things go awry. For colored hair, schedule touchups every eight weeks to keep it looking fresh. Even if you don’t plan for any big hair changes, arrange to trim an inch or two in order to remove split ends. If you plan to hire a makeup artist for the day of the wedding, book them early and be sure to have a consultation with

them beforehand to eliminate any lastminute questions or conflicts. For both hair and makeup trials, don’t forget to take plenty of pictures from multiple angles so that you can review what you want and discuss all the details afterwards. Wear the look for six hours to make sure it all holds, or to note potential problems. If you’ve decided to skip hiring someone, get a makeover at a local
beauty counter and purchase the products you plan to use in advance. Practice at home, particularly if using new products or processes you’re unfamiliar with. If you are hiring a professional, take note of the lipstick and concealer they use so that you can buy your own stash for touch-ups. Hands and feet benefit greatly from regular pampering, so arrange for regular manicure and pedicure sessions

as early as you are able. Starting a few months from the wedding date, plan for a mani-pedi every 15 days to keep fingers and toes at their best. Eyebrows can also take some time to whip into shape, but it all starts with a good bushy base. It’s time to put down the tweezers and grow a good foundation for grooming. Over-plucking causes a loss of natural arch shape, which can alter your facial expression. Get an initial brow appointment six months from the date in order to formulate a plan, then schedule regular sessions leading up to a final shaping a few days before the event. Although the time leading up to a wedding is cause for celebration, keep your alcohol consumption to a minimum if you want to maximize your looks. Not only is alcohol a major dehydrator, it also breaks capillaries in
the skin and causes a sullen appearance. There will be plenty of time to party later, after the picture-perfect bridal photos have been taken. 1-2 MONTHS BEFORE If tanning is on the table, you’ll want to consider the neckline of your gown and if you have any tan lines to cover. Book an appointment now to make sure you like the shade, and shoot for a date close to your dress fitting so you can see how the colors look together. If you like what you see, book a final session for two days before the wedding. If you plan to wax, schedule your last waxing a couple days before the final tan. When it comes to waxing hair away, if you’ve never had it done before plan for a session one month ahead of time and another a couple days before the wedding. If you are already a regular waxer, two to three days before the

ceremony is ideal for a final wax. Be sure to grow your hair out in preparation, at least a ¼ inch is ideal, and exfoliate at least two days before the wax treatment. During the day leading up to your waxing, moisturize as much as possible. For your skin, hydration is the constant key. Drink plenty of water, and go crazy with lotion. A facial is a good option to reveal radiant skin, and can be done once a month for several months leading up to the event. If you’ve never had one before, schedule a final prewedding facial a couple months ahead of the wedding to avoid any risk of bad reactions showing up in photographs. If you already have a regular facial routine, then three to five days before the ceremony is good timing for a final appointment. Three weeks from the wedding is about the last time you’ll want
to do anything to your hair before the ceremony, outside of regular maintenance. Schedule a final hair trim now, and also a touch-up if you have chemically curled or straightened hair. This is also the time to touch-up color treated hair so that it has time to settle, or get tweaked, before the event. 1-2 WEEKS BEFORE Nothing brings out a bridezilla like stress, so amp up the self-care with as many massages as you can mange in the weeks leading up to the big day. Remember to keep sleeping well, eating healthy and drinking plenty of water. Don’t give in to stress eating; get diligent about removing salt, dairy, sugar, bread, alcohol and caffeine from your diet. All these indulgences will cause excess bloating and puffiness. Lots of fruits, vegetables and fiber are your best friends now. Weddings Anniversaries Special Events Custom Catering Guest Lodging

Cutting out coffee, tea and red wine benefits and lightens the teeth as well. For further lightening, consider a bleaching treatment at your dentist or an at-home kit. Either way, schedule a tooth cleaning for two weeks before the big day. If you must drink coffee, tea, or red wine after this point, use a straw in order to minimize staining. Get a deep conditioning hair treatment one week before the wedding, and focus on moisturizing your skin as well. Wear sunscreen religiously when going outside. Exfoliate regularly, but gently, with body scrubs and body polishes. These last couple weeks are the last chance to get your skin into prime condition. At this point, you’ll also want to limit your exposure to any new products or procedures. Go with the tried and tested things you know to work for you,
not that brand-new body butter you received at the bridal shower. There’s no worse time to chance a rash or allergic reaction than right before your wedding. 2-3 DAYS BEFORE A few days before the wedding is when all the beauty preparations reach their apex. If waxing, you’ll want to schedule that for a couple days before tanning. And if you’re spray tanning, that should be scheduled before the final manicure and pedicure. Use the trusted professionals you sourced out months ago; this is no time to try out new technicians. If you choose to do a tanning, cease the body scrubs and minimize soaking during your mani-pedi so that you retain an even coloration. These final few days are also time to get a final eyebrow shaping done.

Pack a beauty kit for the wedding with makeup for touch-ups, blotting papers, Q-tips, breath mints, toothpicks, tissues, pain reliever, antacid, deodorant, eye drops, baby powder, bobby pins, safety pins, mini hair spray, cough drops, band aids, mini liquor bottles, etc. — whatever you could possibly need at the last minute, and won’t have time to search for. THE DAY BEFORE Getting giddy yet? It’s the final day of unmarried life, so take a long, luxurious shower or bath for the last time before the event. Exfoliate, unless you’ve tanned, then moisturize from head-totoe and inside-out by drinking water consistently. Depending on the hairstyle you have planned, you may need to go light or heavy on conditioner, so be sure to
“We’ll make your celebration even sweeter!”
confirm that detail with your stylist ahead of time. Some styles and hair types do better with day-old hair. Nap often, sleep well, and maybe squeeze in a final massage. Rest now, relax as much as possible, and focus on you. This time tomorrow you’ll be beautifully buried in the hubbub of celebration, so take this time to just breathe. THE DAY OF The big day arrives! Get off to a great start with a healthy highprotein breakfast and plan for a light lunch. Don’t count on a solid dinner, you’ll likely be too wrapped up in celebrations, so ask a bridesmaid to stash a granola bar or other quick snack for later. No bride wants to turn as pale as her dress from lack of sustenance. Plan for at least three to four hours of bridal preparation before the ceremony.
Fresh Montana air and stunning scenery will create the perfect wedding atmosphere.

Be sure to wear a robe or button-down shirt before getting your hair and makeup done so that your style survives getting dressed afterwards. Two hours before showtime, your hair and makeup should be complete and ready to roll. With one hour left on the clock, attach your headpiece and put
on your jewelry and accessories. Right before making your grand entrance to walk down the aisle, reserve fifteen minutes to touch up your makeup, high-five your bridesmaids, get a pep talk or two and pop in a breath mint. Ready? Set? Married! 35

nother year, another exciting new bridal season! The looks from the 2019 bridal fashion scene run the gamut from natural to bold. With such variety, it’s easy to find a trend that enhances your personal style. For brides and bridal party alike, beauty inspiration can be found in these top wedding trends for the year: STATEMENT HEADPIECES The most noticeable trend among this year’s collections is the use of big, bold, statement headpieces and other large hair accessories. Gone are tiny details on delicate up-dos, instead we see large flowers blooming from ornate wreaths and crowns resting on effortless hair. As for crowns, it’s no surprise that 2018’s royal nuptials have made their mark on this year’s bridal trends. Tiaras, diadems and circlets rule the runways and wedding aisles along with sparkling hair pins and other jeweled hair decorations. Bandeaus and headbands channel the regal atmosphere of a tiara or crown, but with a much more down-to-earth or sporty vibe. Sleek, unembellished headbands, some in a metallic sheen, were also seen atop many a model’s mane. Bows too were on the scene, with several feet of white velvet ribbon creating a luxurious accompaniment
to a relaxed ponytail, another hot trend this year. A smaller, simple ribbon can be an adorable addition to any other pulled-back style as well, such as the popular chignon or bun. Flowers are still the most classic of adornments for the hair, but bigger is better for blooms in 2019. Ostentatious crowns comprised of the biggest and brightest blossoms from every color of the rainbow are impossible to miss. Another option for a floral fix is to have large flowers glued along the length of long, wavy, naturally styled hair. EFFORTLESS HAIR With so much going on up above with those magnificent hair accessories, the look for hair steers to the tame side with easy, simple styles setting a solid foundation for further adornment. Elaborate ‘dos are out, in favor of elaborate headpieces. Overall, wispy waves and natural texture take top billing; think saltwaterspritzed mermaid hair. Long and loose tresses with a few key strands pinned away from the face, or tucked behind the ears, accentuate cheekbones to reveal that bridal glow. Center parts are popular, and parting your hair in a different spot can be a no-risk way to try out a new look. Again, the royal influence marks its presence with an abundance of
41
chignons and low, loose, buns with wispy tendrils framing the face. This look sets a timeless and elegant stage upon which to place any statement headpiece. Adding volume to the crown balances a low bun and complements higher necklines, or update the classic look by focusing on texture and a livedin feel. Another easy look that's trending is the sleek, low ponytail. Paired with a big bow or silky ribbon, this option creates a vision that is both contained and carefree. Not only does this style suit most wedding dresses, but it is ideal for outdoor or destination weddings since it eliminates the worry of weather ruining the hairstyle. For brides with short hair, the bridal 42
bob is a popular trend that gives a modern edge to even the most classical of gowns. And edgy is indeed in, with hair teased into bridal faux-hawks paired with traditional veils, and punky smudged shadows with metallic touches. SIMPLE MAKEUP Whether bold or subdued, this year's makeup trends toward uncomplicated simplicity. It’s no surprise to see that an easy, natural look still goes with anything and looks good on anyone. Well-shaped eyebrows form a frame for effortless eyes that don’t look overdone, while eyeshadow in bronze shades from matte to metallic create a simplified smoky
eye effect. Rosy hues enhance natural radiance in the form of pink and berry lips, with pink tones giving a dewy finish to luminous complexions. Keeping it simple, but striking, the classic red lip isn't going anywhere. With a natural, glowing face for a canvas, the bold strokes of a deep burgundy or Hollywood red lip give glamour to any style. Winged eyeliner and sweeps of charcoal shadow top
things off for a more dramatic, comehither look. When it comes to makeup, basic doesn’t need to mean boring. Bold, statement looks such as metallic accents don’t require much more effort than a natural look but portray a significant difference in style. Strokes of silver across the lids, metallic lip colors and golden nails create a mixed-metal look that's fun and fresh.

Choosing
The dress
Y
ou’ve said yes to your partner, but now it’s time for the second most important ‘yes’ for your wedding. That’s right, the white dress you will wear to walk down the aisle is probably front of mind as you’re getting ready to plan your wedding. This is a dress you will remember for the rest of your life, so there are a few things to consider to make the right choice. Call ahead to the store you want to visit and make an appointment. You’ll want the time set aside so that you and your bridal consultant, and whoever you bring along, will be able to focus on getting you the gown of your dreams. Expectations Watching reality TV shows, browsing Instagram and scrolling through Pinterest gives many brides an idea of the dress they want, but Rebecca Wagner, co-owner of Rococo Bridal and Formal Wear in Missoula cautions against getting your heart set on a specific style. Keep an open mind to what your consultant suggests. “You might end up with something that you really, really love,” Wagner says. Bethany Owens, at Mimi’s Bridal

in Kalispell, notes that when brides come into her shop, they pick out a few dresses and the consultants select a few for the brides to try on as well. Even if the bride isn’t enthused with the style, she has them try the dress on and they are often pleasantly surprised by a style they didn’t think they would like. “Don’t come in with too many pre-conceived notions,” Lisa Seher of Cloud Nine Bridal in Coeur d’Alene recommends. Trends Lace, low backs, bling and colored fabrics are all strong trends continuing into next year. Overlays with sequins are very popular, Owens notes. Higher necklines and lace detailing are also making a comeback, she says. Sheer illusions can give the designers more leeway with structural and low back styles. “It just allows the designers to be more creative,” Wagner says. Sleeves are a strong trend both Seher and Owens have noted. After working in alterations for over 30 years, Seher says she can add sleeves to almost any gown. Working in alterations for so long has allowed her to help guide brides better in her own shop, she points out.

Timing Check with the shop you’re interested in buying from, but our experts recommend starting as much as a year out from your date. “They need to understand that most of the time the dress is made to order,” Wagner says. Unless you’re buying off the rack, it will take time to construct the dress. And even if you buy off the rack, you’ll have to keep alterations in mind as well. “I like to have two months for alterations,” Seher notes.
Online cautions It can be tempting to order your gown online, whether it’s for the screaming deal or for the convenience, but that can lead to its own host of problems. “You can buy a lot of things online, but your wedding gown is not one of them,” Owens cautions. Having the full in-store experience means you have a fuller understanding of what the gown will look like, what alterations are possible and still stay within your price range, she notes. When you buy in a store, you know

what you’re getting, Wagner says. There’s a lot of info you get for free when you go to a full service bridal salon. “You’re not just stuck with a wrinkled dress in a box on your porch,” she notes. Keep in mind “We want people to love how they look in our dress,” Owens says. “You want to be beautiful, but you want to be comfortable too,” Seher urges. She asks her brides to keep in mind what they’ll be doing that day. “Can you hug everyone? Can you eat the cake you so carefully picked out?” she asks. But at the end of the day, as important as the dress of your dreams is, don’t let it stress you out. Seher notes there’s enough anxiety in planning a wedding. She remembers one bride in particular that was so completely stressed. Her future husband took her into his arms and said, “Honey, it’s about our life.” Focus on the life you’re building together and take time to relax and enjoy the whole process, Seher says. Flowers
W
hen it comes to selecting your flowers for your wedding, keeping seasonality in mind is important to keeping your costs under control, but considering the venue and the type of flowers you want is also important, Janet Gardner from St. Char Ro in St. Ignatius notes. Hydrangeas are a popular choice among brides who want to DIY their wedding flowers, but they’re given that name for a reason. “They take up water like a fire hydrant,” Janet says. This means they will need to

be watered two or three times a day, possibly more if your wedding is held in the heat of summer. If you’ve done your centerpieces hours ahead of time and then have them sitting on the tables in the heat of the day, by the time the reception rolls around or the photographer comes through, the flowers can look wilted and parched. Florists are trained in how to properly condition flowers to harden them and keep them looking nice through the day, Janet notes. The flowers must be cut and watered again and again, placed back into a cooler and many

other things. Centerpieces, for example, should never go out on the tables more than two hours early, she notes. Arches for the ceremony shouldn’t be done more than 30 minutes beforehand, she commented. For florists who are in the know, fresh flowers can be mixed with silks in an arch to bring the whole thing to life, while allowing the budget, time and location constraints to be kept in mind. If you’re trying to save money, Janet recommends carnations, which will last and hold up in all weather, along with mums. “Spider mums are just gorgeous in all arrangements,” she says. Cymbium orchids hold up well and are available all year, Janet points
out. They can even be as cheap as roses, which she urged brides to not underestimate. Roses go down in price in the summer, and can make stunning additions to bouquets or centerpieces of their own. Peonies are another great option for spring and summer brides. Sunflowers, white daisies and blue delphinium all work well in the summer also. As summer turns into fall, golds and tans become more prominent and seasonal flowers remain a great option. “And if you see snow on the mountains, put a touch of white in,” Janet notes. Many brides are moving away from a stark white towards wildflowers, succulents and ivory and beige tones. Prices and availability can vary

“This is Western Montana,” Janet notes, so the weather can be variable. “Don’t count on a 70 degree day,” she cautions. After 45 years in the business, she still see brides scheduling summer ceremonies in the hottest part of the day, with guests sweltering in the sun on itchy hay bales or wanting a sparkler send off in the middle of fire season when darkness doesn’t come until 10 p.m. Your guests want to be comfortable and celebrate your love, so consider them too when choosing your location and timing.

on a small Budget
A
s you know, weddings can be expensive. Perhaps your guest list keeps growing or a beautiful dress has caught your eye that is way out of your price range. Setting and keeping a budget for your wedding can be difficult, but if you prioritize what you want to spend on, you can look at other creative ways to save. After looking at our budget percentage guide on page 18, you may find yourself wanting to spend more on certain categories. It’s your day, spend where you want! If you always dreamed about the dress you would wear to walk down the aisle, or fantasized about the stunning location you’d like to take your vows, direct your money towards those high priorities items and look at other ways to cut down on where your money is going. You’ve no doubt heard the old standbys of advice: pick and off-season date, skip the Saturday wedding, cut down your guest list, but here are some other suggestions to save on different aspects of your wedding so you can put the rest of the money where you want it most! The venue Does your cousin have a beautiful ranch? Grandma have a stunning view of the mountains? Family cabin lakeside? Utilize your network to find some unique venue opportunities, that won’t come with required vendor lists or the high price tag, hopefully. Renting a house is also a great option if you don’t have family or friends with the scenery
you had in mind. An open public space or a private connection can provide lower cost options, but beware, this likely means you’ll be responsible for setting up everything, taking it down, or finding someone to do that. If you are using a more traditional wedding venue, ask what’s included in your rental fee. Some venues include tables, chairs or linens, or have discounts with preferred vendors. Don’t be afraid to ask, and avoid the unexpected costs that can come along with corkage fees, power hookups and more. The dress If new isn’t your requirement for a beautiful dress, consider bridal consignment stores, department stores or shop sample sales. Many brides sell their gowns after their nuptials, and with the right tailor, they can still be adjusted to fit your body perfectly for your big day. Even if you buy the new, gorgeous wedding dress of your dreams, consider borrowing the accessories. Veils, jewelry, shoes from your fashionsavvy friend and more can cover your “something old, something borrowed” and trim a bit from your budget. Flowers and decor You know what our first suggestion is going to be: stick to the season! Check out our chart on page 64 to see when your favorite blooms are in season, looking their freshest, while also costing you less. 71
Sunflowers for your summer wedding will add a seasonal touch and bright color while dahlias at your winter wedding could bust your floral budget. Repurpose your ceremony flowers for the reception, adding bridesmaid’s bouquets to centerpieces or flowers from your ceremony arch to amor your sweetheart table. You can also ask your florist about excess inventory they may be willing to lend or part with for a reduced rate. If you’ve got the skills, or know someone who does, take a stab at DIY decorations. This isn’t an option for everyone, and it can quickly bust your budget if you’re not careful, but if you can cull vintage or crafts stores to make your own decorations, or can whip up custom table cloths on your own, you can spend that money you’ve saved somewhere else! Many newlyweds sell their wedding decor on Craigslist or Facebook as well, so check for local groups, and consider putting your goods up there after you’ve said “I do.” Cake The bigger the cake, the bigger the price tag. Consider having a smaller cake for you and your partner to cut and serve sheet cake to the guests. If you know someone that is up to the challenge, consider asking a friend or family member to bake the cake or spruce up a store-bought one in place of a wedding gift to you. Another option that has gained steam in recent years is non-traditional desserts. If you and your fiancé could take or leave cake, but love cookies or pies, serve those instead! An ice cream truck or other to-go dessert option can 72
also be a fun change for your guests, and a welcome relief for your wallet. Catering Talk with your caterer about the different options. Seated, plated dinners tend to be the most expensive, so if that’s not a make-it-or-break-it deal for you, consider buffets, family-style stations or for d’oeuvres galore. Simplifying your drink options can also save you some bills. Sticking to beer and wine can save some money. If you really want whiskey or tequila at your reception, consider a signature drink for each of you. It will give your guests more options without breaking the bank. Music You may be inclined to just hook up an iPod to some speakers and call it good, but there are a multitude of ways that can go wrong. Even if your venue has a professional sound system ready to roll, consider hiring an MC to keep the night rolling smoothly. If a live band for either the ceremony, reception or both is what makes your heart sing, consider asking local college students or teachers at local music schools. They may have other connections that can net you a smaller price tag, and they’re often available on the weekends! Don’t be afraid to say yes when your friends or family offer to help! They can be a great resource, so utilize them. And remember, it’s your day, so send your money where you want to. Your guests will just want a fun time to celebrate your love!

Hiring a Photographer
T
he photographs from your special day are priceless. You only get one shot at getting it right so it’s critical to find the perfect photographer to work with you on capturing your big day. Here are some questions from wedding site The Knot that can help you find the perfect photographer. • Will the photos be retouched? • Will I see proofs before or after this is done? • How many weddings have you shot? • What’s your favorite part of the wedding? • What exactly is included in your packages? • Do you shoot film and digital? If you shoot film, are they black and white? • What is your charge for overtime? • Will you be my photographer or will it be one of your associates? • Do you have backup if you’re sick or have an emergency? • Do you use assistants and will there
be an additional fee? • How long after the wedding will we get to see the photos? • Have you ever shot at my venue before? • Do you use a shot list or do you prefer to shoot as you see fit? • What type of paper will you use for the pictures and the album? • Can I share the pictures online? • Do you bring your own lighting? • What will you wear? Making the Deal As with any of your wedding vendors, make sure that you read and understand the contract. Also make sure that the photographer can work in your venue with the lighting and other equipment they’ll need. Some venues restrict the type of lighting that can be used during the ceremony. If you’re minding a budget, make sure you also understand any extra fees that can arise.

Honeymoon
Bucket list Get away
T
ime to Get Away Once you’ve got the big details of the ceremony down, it’s time to tackle the honeymoon. Just like in planning a destination wedding, traveling to a warm-weather destination in the off season may save you some money. Or maybe you’ve got visions of a snow-covered getaway. Either way, you can still plan the perfect honeymoon for a winter wedding. Consider Hiring a Pro With online booking sites galore, travel agents seem like a thing of the past. But they’re still around and can help you out tremendously, especially if you’re up to your eyebrows in wedding details. A travel agent can vet vendors, destinations and lay out the perfect, custom itinerary for you. They can also help you sort out travel rules and regulations so you don’t miss any important deadlines. Check with family and friends and the Better Business Bureau for
recommendations on finding the perfect travel agent for you. Your bridal shop or wedding planner may also be connected to pros that do great work for honeymoons. Decide What You Want Work together to make this the perfect trip for both of you. It’s a special, so consider getting outside your travel box. If you usually go to the beach, hit the mountains. Or if you’re a city traveler, kick one off your bucket list. And while you’re working together, try to work in some surprises, romantic or other-wise. Don’t Pile On You just planned and executed one of the biggest events of your life. You are going to be zapped. So don’t plan to spend seven consecutive days traipsing around New York on foot or hiking in the mountains. Leave lots of time for relaxation and work in things like massages or spa days to get some of your energy back.

Marriage
An Intimate Affair
A
small, intimate wedding has loads of romance to it — as well as many other advantages. While the large wedding has become a staple of contemporary American culture, the small wedding is making a comeback, and for good reason. Before you set your final budget and guest list, consider the following motivations for staying small. Get Married Where You Want Think of all the gorgeous venues you could either price yourself out of, or not be able to fit into due to the size of your party. Keeping your guest list small gives you more options. It also opens up venues that don’t traditionally host weddings — or charge “wedding prices.” Think of places such as an art museum, a zoo or a greenhouse. Spend More Quality Time With Guests An intimate wedding typically has less than 75 guests, which means you will have a lot more time to spend with each person. Walk around to each table and personally thank people for coming.
Depending on the size of your party, consider seating everyone at one long table — creating an intimate dinner party atmosphere. Do More With Your Money Small weddings can cost less, saving you thousands. Alternatively, you could spend the same amount as you would have set aside for a larger affair and splurge on the luxurious extras you want most. A smaller wedding can be a way for you to ensure your guests have a night they will always remember, and that you have the wedding you always dreamed about. Put Your Money Toward Your Future Your wedding day is a magical day and will most likely always hold a distinct place in your heart. But remember, it is just one day. Hosting a smaller wedding means you are free to put additional money toward future goals, such as putting a down payment on a house or saving to start a family. Remember, your lives together are just beginning.

Hiring a Planner
I
f all of these details are starting to make your head spin, it might be time to consider hiring a wedding planner. These professionals plan and organize weddings and are probably familiar with a lot of the venues and challenges in your area. Here are some tips for choosing a wedding planner. Do Your Homework Ask friends, family and, if your wedding is at a church, church officials for recommendations. Churches, especially, may have a limited group they work with. Also look for awards and memberships in professional organizations like the American Association of Certified Wedding Planners and the Association of Bridal Consultants. What to Bring With You In short, everything. Bring pictures of ceremonies, dresses, accessories, flowers and anything else you can think of to your first meeting with your planner. Scour bridal magazines, but also look on
social media, Pinterest and other sites for ideas. Your planner can help you suss out what would work for you in your area and what won’t. She can also help you stick to your budget, so have your financial plans worked out before then as well. After the meeting, if you liked what you heard from the planner, make sure to check references. Ask those brides to send photos of their weddings and ask plenty of questions like how the planner was to work with and how closely she stuck to the budget. Signed and Sealed When you sign a contract with the planner (and you should), make sure it go over it thoroughly. Make sure it clearly outlines your expectations of her and, also very important, her expectations of you. If you have any questions at all, ask. Clear communication is going to be key to this relationship and to a beautiful wedding. Might as well start now.

All about the hair
Y
our hair is a central component of the overall bridal look. What you choose to do with it — and adorn it with — can dramatically change your finished appearance. How you look will be an obvious focus of wedding planning since everyone else’s eyes will be on you. But don’t fret just yet. Follow these tips and tricks, and you are sure to be happy with the results. Updo — or Down? Before you choose a hairstyle, you must take into consideration the style of your gown, as well as the overall tone you are hoping to set for your wedding. Your hairstyle should complement these aspects — not compete with them. Your face shape also will play a role in your overall decision. Just remember, the goal is to look like the best version of yourself — not someone completely different. So consider styles that don’t stray far from your everyday look. If you regularly wear your naturally wavy hair loose, a simple side-swept bun with a long veil will look more appropriate than tight ringlets and a tiara.
Veils: The Long and Short of It The veil has become a classic wedding accoutrement and is available in many lengths, styles and fabrics. Consider the style of your dress when choosing a veil; ideally, these items will be purchased at the same time. Will you want to show off the back of the dress? Stick with a veil of sheer silk netting. Is your dress an ankle-length, vintage chic stunner? A birdcage veil is the likely choice. When choosing a hairstyle, be sure it allows for the veil of your choice to be easily secured. Headpieces and Hair Jewelry Another option is to forgo the veil altogether. Baubles designed specifically with your locks in mind are getting more and more popular. Think golden floral combs, delicate headbands and whimsical bun wreaths. You can leave behind jewels and metals of all kind, and go floral; a wreath of delicate rosebuds or one elegant magnolia bloom can add a breath-taking touch of romance..

Thank You Etiquette
R
eceiving wedding gifts is an added joy of getting married. Writing thank-you notes for each of these gifts, however, can be a challenge. This is especially true if you receive a large number of gifts. Not to worry, with this simple guide, your thank-yous will be thoughtfully written and in the mail in no time. Who to Thank Everyone who has given you a gift should receive your thanks. Be sure to add anyone who helped in planning, organizing, and decorating or ran errands on your behalf. Your wedding would not have been what it was without
help. Start by making a list. This will ensure you don’t forget anyone and makes it easy to cross off each name as cards are written. When to Send For every gift you receive before your big day, you have a couple of weeks to post a thank you note. For every gift received at or after your wedding, you generally have a few months. This is not to say you should wait until the end of this etiquette deadline. Try to send your thank-you notes out as quickly as possible — ideally within the first few weeks after you return from your honey-moon.
89
What to Say As a culture, we have always struggled with the best way to say, “thank you. The best way to pen a mass quantity of thank-you notes is to stick with a simple formula, with a touch of personalization. Start with a simple greeting: Dear __________________________, Then express your gratitude: Thank you so much for __________________________. Next, mention the gift by name and add a personal detail. This could be how you plan on using or dis-playing the gift. If the person has given money, describe how you plan to spend it. Follow up this sentence by stating when you hope to see the person again, what the person means to you, or just that you’re thinking of her. Finally, end with your regards.
Making it Fun You can relieve much of your anxiety about the task by making the experience an enjoyable one. Start off by stocking up on some beautiful stationery. Thank-you cards are items you will need again and again, so you can take advantage of bulk deals without worrying about waste. Make it an “event. Put on some fun music, pour a glass of wine and pick up your favorite pen. Don’t forget to split the task with your beloved. Your Wedding, Honeymoon, & Anniversary Venue!
