Western Montana grads address past, future

“Reconstruct” by Ativa McBurney, Glacier High School, Kalispell

‌ eely Ehmann K Co-valedictorian Darby Senior year is unlike any other. It didn’t hit me when I woke up for my last first day of high school. It didn’t hit me when we cheered at our last homecoming pep rally and attended our last football game. It didn’t even hit me when I cried my eyes out at senior night. It also didn’t hit me as we filled out countless scholarship applications and went to our last prom. I’m beginning to feel it now as I look around and realize that I will never see half of these people again.      Sean Lindley Riley McVey Co-presidents Big Sky Some of us are so eager to finish the ceremony that we didn’t want to waste time putting clothes on under our robes, while some of us are wondering why we didn’t skip our government assignments in order to take advantage of a great fifth year of high school. Whichever you may be, I encourage you to sit in silence and savor this moment for 10 more minutes.      Alec Managhan Valedictorian Alberton It is quite obvious that we have had an incredible amount of support behind us. I know that this love has taught me something that I hold to be very important. I believe that my most powerful attribute has nothing to do with me. It has everything to do with you. No one can do anything great on their own, and I thank you for making sure I have never been alone. Mikayla Schneider Co-salutatorian Loyola Sacred Heart As I have grown up, I have realized

the opportunities to thank others come far less often than their actions that deserve our gratitude. I have also noticed the same is true with learning. The opportunity to receive knowledge arises far more frequently than times to reflect on the lesson learned.      Kendra Hergett Valedictorian Florence-Carlton We as students cannot control how a teacher grades our assignment, but we can control how much work we put into it. As athletes, we cannot control what team we make in our sport, but we can control how hard we work to get there. As musicians, we cannot control the fact that we get nervous, but we can control our breathing. What we can control is just as long of a list as what we can’t. There is always something in our control.      Abraham Hidey Co-valedictorian Thompson Falls Thompson Falls may be a small school in what’s considered to be a poor county, far from the beaten track. But we make the most of it. As Henry Ford said, “Don’t find fault, find a remedy.” Lacking the funding for some of the things larger schools have, we more than make up for it with dedicated people who exemplify this “find a remedy” spirit. Our community invests so much in their schools and kids – teachers, counselors, coaches, business people, neighbors and family all give so much to help us make the most of our lives.      Megan Bridwell Co-valedictorian Glacier Some of you aspire to hold a scalpel, saving and improving the lives of those in physical pain. Others of you want to light up the stage like a night sky

‌ his special Missoulian section contains graduation information T from 38 western Montana schools. School officials were invited to send us the names of their graduating seniors, lists of scholarships and awards, profiles of top seniors and copies of student commencement speeches. Some schools sent all the information while others were able to partially fill requests. The information is not complete. Many students received scholarships after the newspaper’s deadline had passed. Students who earn scholarships from several schools only receive money from the institution that they choose to attend unless awards are personal and can be applied to any school. full of stars with your rich alto voice. Some others of you have set a course to defend our nation by wearing our country’s uniform with pride. Some are dreaming of continuing to design the skyline of New York City. Others of you are eager to impart wisdom to the youth of this world as an educator. And then some of you are like ships on the sea, setting out on a journey of unknown purpose and discovery.      Jodie-Lee Hostetler Co-valedictorian Hellgate Don’t let fear cripple you to mediocrity. Rather, follow your passions, spend time with friends and family, and, most of all, stop worrying about the small mishaps in life. Worrying only hinders our ability to overcome our fears, our failures, and our challenges. Instead of crying over spilled milk, laugh—because you can’t change the past, but you can certainly change the present and future.      Ian Descamps Valedictorian Loyola Sacred Heart We’ve learned about taking ownership of our actions, about acting morally even when other people fail to, about treating others the way we want to be treated; we’ve had the opportunity to learn how to be decent in a changing world. Graduates, use those lessons. Everyone in this room, use those lessons, learn from these graduates.      Noah Bronner Co-valedictorian Thompson Falls Throughout their lives, the Class of 2015 has stood on-top of mountains. They have scaled some of the most confusing years of life – teenage years, of course – they have smiled in the face of failure, found refuge in friends

and family, and have supplied the dedication needed to rise up on this hill which we all now sit, gazing upon their accomplishments and successes.      Linnea Hill Co-valedictorian Valley Christian (Inspired by Doctor Seuss) My message for you is loud and clear, When we take this next step, have no fear. Give thanks to your parents, for while you were sprouting, They heroically dealt with all of your pouting. When you came to them, eyes full of tears, They taught you always to persevere.      Athanasius Hasselbrook Co-salutatorian Loyola Sacred Heart Before I end this discourse, I would like to tell you guys that I do care about you, and will remember every single one of you in the years to come. My advice to us all is to trust God and always try to be honest and genuine. I would also like to tell you all to just be yourselves. Don’t live up to someone else’s expectations. Be yourself and give it your best in your endeavors.      Emily McCloy Co-valedictorian Valley Christian Seniors, as we move into the next chapter of our lives, it is up to each of us to decide which course we will take. Will we go for the quick fix, pursuing obvious goals with a can of Sherwin Williams paint, or will we surrender to the Master Architect for a remodel that holds up under pressure? Each time a gust of wind or small storm cloud threatens, will you – will I – wait on God’s timing and let Him build us in preparation for the earthquakes? I sure hope we will.
