GRIZZLY GAME DAY | GRIZZLY Q&A

BACKYARD FOOTBALL Grizzlies’ DT drew up in shadows of UM program AJ MAZZOLINI ajmazzolini@missoulian.com

Montana’s defensive line coach probably didn’t come there for him, the way Zach Peevey remembers it. Caleb Kidder, Helena Capital’s bruising defensive standout, was the main target. But why not chat two for one? Peevey’s Missoula Hellgate boys were playing Kidder’s Bruins that day in January 2011, but on the basketball court and not the football field. After a conversation with Kidder, the coach turned his attention to the Knights’ 6-foot-3, 220-pounder. It was after a game of hoops that the Griz first approached Peevey about a future at Washington-Grizzly Stadium, a place already like a second home for the Missoula high schooler. Since moving to Montana in the sixth grade, weekends in the fall were filled with football and Saturdays belonged to the Griz. Peevey, who soon packed on the pounds to become a tackle on the Grizzlies’ defensive line, accomplished something awfully rare in athletics. He turned an all-star prep career into a scholarship opportunity with his hometown university’s athletic program. “It was special,” Peevey recalled wistfully this week, more than five years after TOMMY MARTINO, Missoulian committing his college days to Montana Montana’s Zach Peevey (93) celebrates with Josh Sandry (13) after Sandry’s sack in the second half against Southern Utah. and the Griz. playing sparingly in 2015. for so many years. coaches, but his best attribute was his Some of those issues have followed “Scared, intimidated and learning excitement for the game. GRIZZLY GAME DAY / FROM PAGE A2

Peevey Continued

You can’t blame Peevey for being excited in the moment. His return to form has been a long time coming. He’s also just an excitable kind of guy. “Anybody who makes a play out here on defense — offense doesn’t matter — I’m so psyched up,” he added, again flashing his humor. “I just get so pumped to see these guys work so hard in the offseason and get to make these plays. It’s such a payoff.” Speaking of payoffs, Peevey is earning his because of more than skill and up-beat attitude, current Griz D-line coach Brian Hendricks said. He paired his passion with preparation. “The kid had an excellent offseason,” said Hendricks, last year’s defensive ends coach who took over when Suiaunoa left for Hawaii last winter. “He had so many gains, not only in the weight room but I think mentally understanding what his job is and understanding this defense. “He understood pre-snap thought process, what kind of plays he was going to get and it allowed him to make those plays (last week).” Where the Griz interior D-line struggled at times in Peevey’s absence a year ago, Montana’s depth has shined there this season. Redshirt freshman Jesse Sims, a Stevensville native and Corvallis High graduate, has filled in admirably starting at tackle with Peevey on the mend. Sims has 15 tackles and a sack while starting all four games. Having both available lifts the position group’s ceiling even further, head coach Bob Stitt said. “Jesse’s got to come off the field to get a few plays of rest and then you’ve got a senior going in there that we were counting on being the guy,” Stitt said. “All of a sudden Jesse got an opportunity and he takes advantage of it. That’s what we want our guys to do. You get on the field, take advantage of an opportunity and don’t give that job back. Now we’ve got two guys that we really trust and are

Montana’s Zach Peevey looks to make a play in the second half of last Saturday’s game. great players.” Both come with their own cheering sections on game days after growing up so close to the University of Montana. That built-in support is unique, especially for Missoula products, former Griz defensive end Zack Wagenmann said, and an experience not to be overlooked. “I think I was aware of it while I was there, but I’ve become more aware now that I’m done and looking back,” said the former Missoula Sentinel star and Montana’s all-time sacks (37.5) and tackles for loss (53) leader. “It’s very special.”

Height: 6-3 Weight: 274 Hometown: Missoula

“There could definitely be some added pressure, but it all is kinda how you look at it,” added Wagenmann, who lives in Phoenix since being signed and then waived by the NFL’s Arizona Cardinals in the last year and a half. “You’ve got so many friends and family there to

support you through your whole career. That’s a cool opportunity.” One Peevey isn’t taking for granted. His Griz career has only four regularseason home games left starting this weekend when Montana plays host to Mississippi Valley State.

GRIZZLY GAME DAY | STRENGTHS

THE EDGE Missoulian reporter AJ Mazzolini assesses the strengths of both teams

QUARTERBACK: Brady Gustafson has found his groove. His statistics over the past two games are remarkable: 74 completions in 109 attempts for 833 yards and six touchdowns. That’s by far the best two-game stretch of his Griz career. Let the good times roll! OFFENSIVE LINE: The Griz have thrown the ball 114 times in the past two games and yet only twice has the quarterback been sacked. That’s pretty remarkable and a medal of honor for the offensive line.

Technology to drive productivity

RUNNING BACK: Among all the bad stats on Mississippi Valley State’s season résumé, its rushing attack is by far the worst. The Delta Devils average a pitiful 14.6 yards per game. Yeah, you read that right, 14.6. Naturally, that’s last in the nation. UM WIDE RECEIVERS: Well hello, James Homan. The Blinn College transfer added his sword to Montana’s passing arsenel last week with a breakout performance. The Griz came awfully close to having three 100-yard receivers last week (Jerry LouieMcGee 118, Homan 103, Justin Calhoun 87), and it’s just a matter of time before it happens. DEFENSIVE LINE: The Devils’ best player is senior defensive end Khalil Young. He has 40 total tackles with 4.0 for loss and four forced fumbles in just five games. Sadly, he is just one man and the D-line is among the Grizzlies’ deepest positions. Well we should probably give the Delta Devils some love somewhere right? No? OK, you’re right. Griz it is. LINEBACKERS: Montana’s three starting LBs rank Nos. 2, 3 and 4 on the team in total tackles with 82 between them. Josh Buss has 5.0 stops for loss and should add to it at the frequency with which MVSU suffers negative plays. Boy, this is getting repetitive isn’t it? DEFENSIVE BACKS: The Griz will be without starting safety Justin Strong for the first half because of a targeting personal foul penalty last week against Southern Utah. By the time he’s eligible to return, there’s a good chance most of Montana’s starters will be out of the game anyway.

• Document Systems • Professional Displays • Aquos Boards • Cloud Portal Services

SPECIAL TEAMS: Montana’s rash of bad luck in the kicking game — two missed PATs and a blocked field goal last week — is nothing compared to what Mississippi Valley State has endured. The team is 1 for 5 on field goals, with none of those attempts from farther away than 41 yards. INTANGIBLES: It doesn’t take a mathematician to add this one up. The Griz are the heavy, heavy, heavy favorites here. Valley comes from the SWAC, a league of historically black colleges that doesn’t often travel this far. This is uncharted territory for the Devils, who will need extra checked-bag space to get their 0-5 record on the flight.
