GRIZZLY GAME DAY / YAMEN SANDERS

HIRED HELP

Transfer brings veteran presence to Griz secondary

AJ MAZZOLINI ajmazzolini@missoulian.com

The first thing that Montana’s recruiters noticed when digging through Yamen Sanders’ game film is the same thing you’d see standing innocuously behind the senior Griz safety at the grocery store. At 6 feet, 4 inches tall and a lean 220 pounds, Sanders cuts an imposing figure. “When other teams get a look at him, he definitely brings an intimidation factor,” Griz teammate Josh Sandry confirmed. “He’s just so big.” Sanders passes the eye-test, but there’s plenty more than biceps and big hits for this bilingual bruiser. It’s why Montana’s defensive coaches brought him to Missoula as a transfer from FBS Arizona in the summer of 2015. Tucked inside his helmet is a mind adept at critical thinking — in regards to football and otherwise. Yamen Sanders Jr. was born in Inglewood, California, a community just southwest of downtown Los Angeles, but he didn’t spend much of his early childhood there. The son of a former USC basketball star, the titular Yamen Sanders Sr., the youngster spent many years on foreign soil during the elder Sanders’ international pro hoops career. Sanders Sr. played for 10 years across Europe with a stop in Japan as well. The junior Yamen was born about two years into that stretch. He remembers bits and pieces of their time in places like Germany and Turkey with less foggy memories from a stay in Italy when he was a bit older. Sanders was fluent in English and Italian by the time he was 7. He fell in love with basketball just like his father. It’s funny, Sanders said at a Griz football practice this week, the things that he remembers most from those years. Like Italian basketball fans’ propensity to celebrate with toilet paper. After games they’d hurl full rolls from the stands, the streams unraveling in the air like a monochrome indoor fireworks show. “The floor would just be covered in

Sanders had six tackles in the game against the Eagles. toilet paper,” he recalled. “Whole stadium, toilet paper flying through air.” As the years passed, his grasp on Italiano softened — as did his desire to play basketball. By high school back in the States at Culver City High, coaches wanted to use his size inside as a post player. Sanders likened himself to a swing guard, slashing to the hoop. Football started to take over his life. He signed with Arizona as a two-star recruit in 2012. After three years, one redshirt

season and two playing sparingly on special teams, Sanders started searching for new scenery. Never afraid of traveling to the unknown, he found a “diamond in the rough” in far-flung Montana. Before Jason Semore was coaching the Griz D’ as defensive coordinator this season, he followed head coach Bob Stitt from Colorado School of Mines to serve as Stitt’s defensive secondary coach.

Soon after the hire, Semore and former DC Ty Gregorak identified safety as a position of need. They had senior Justin Whitted, sure, but the oft-injured veteran was coming off a shoulder surgery. Behind him and fellow senior Eric Johnson was a void of underclassmen. The coaches needed to find a seasoned safety on the transfer market for 2015 and beyond. See SANDERS, Page A6

GRIZZLY GAME DAY | Q&A

2016 a roller coaster for Curran, Griz ISAIAH DUNK for the Missoulian

If you asked Keenan Curran about himself, he’d say he’s just a hardworking student-athlete at the University of Montana. Griz fans already know that part. The sophomore wide receiver has had an upand- down season, but he has at least one touchdown in each of Montana’s last four games. Last Saturday at Eastern Washington, Curran hauled in five receptions for 89 yards, and his 47-yard touchdown was his second-longest of the season. But there’s a side of Keenan Curran that Griz fans don’t know about. He also says he’s kindhearted, a hopeless romantic, and a heartthrob who doesn’t like scary movies. He’ll watch romance films though. The Missoulian chatted with Curran at a recent Griz football practice, the conversation straying from his performance this season and last week’s game at Eastern Washington to his favorite plays on the football field and finally his movie selection. Q. How has your role changed from the beginning of the year to now? A. It’s been kind of a roller coaster. At the beginning of the year, it started off as a leadership role. I was going to play a big role in the team’s success, but then I made some mistakes and had to support my team as we went through some success. Now I’m not so much a huge part of the success, but my job is vital to our success. Just a role player I guess I would say.

Q. Yeah, you’ve been seeing a lot of looks lately. What does that say about the way you’re playing? A. It’s good because it shows the coaches have confidence in me, but at the same time, with that confidence I have to make the plays. Last week I didn’t have too good of a game. So this game I’ve definitely got to rebound, come back, and play a lot harder. Q. What makes you and the rest of the receiving corps so dangerous? A. We have a little bit of everything. Justin Calhoun is super fast and runs really good routes. Jerry (Louie-McGee) is super electric and very quick. Colin Bingham is super strong. I could go on and on about the guys. We have a mixture of a lot of different things that make us a complete receiving corps, not just a couple good guys. Q. Do you prefer the deep route or the catch and run? A. For me, it’s probably the deep route. I’m not super fast, that’s more of Jerry’s thing or Justin’s thing. I didn’t show it last game, but I can make some of the tougher catches on the deep routes. Q. Speaking of last game, the (Montana) offense gained more yards than Eastern, but it didn’t translate into points. What went on there? A. You know, I couldn’t say it was one thing. For myself and some of the other receivers, the issue was catching the ball when we needed to catch it and being opportunistic when we had big plays to be made. But I think they (EWU) made the plays they needed to make and

We just didn’t make the tough plays. Q. You guys have Idaho State this week. What do you think about the matchup? A. They’ve got some good defensive backs. I mean, anyone that’s playing Division I football is good, so we’ll see. They’ve been playing a lot of Cover 1 recently. That’s definitely a one-on-one matchup, me against another guy, who’sgoing-to-win type of thing. I guess we’ll just have to see on Saturday. I’m going to put in the work it takes to be successful on my end, but you never know what’s happening on that end. Q. How does it feel playing with Brady (Gustafson) out there? A. He makes my job really easy. He’s one of the best passers in the FCS, so all I’ve got to do is catch the ball and get in the end zone. It makes my job extremely easy. Q. What’s your personal favorite play this season, if you could describe it? A. Goal line back

shoulder throws or goal line jump balls. I think it’s something that I’m good at. At the Cal Poly game, I was unsuccessful on one. But after that I think I’ve

been 100 percent getting that play called and throwing my way. Q. You described yourself as a hopeless romantic. Do you watch chick flicks? A. (Laughs) A little bit with my girlfriend. I’ll watch a few. But yeah, I’m just a super hopeless romantic. Q. Well, what kind of movies do you watch? A. I hate scary movies. They’re just not my thing.

I can’t believe I’m about to admit this but … “Legally Blonde” and “Legally Blonde 2.” (To offensive lineman David Reese) You got some good romantic movies? “The Notebook?” Reese: What’s that one with Ashton Kutcher? The Vegas one. “What Happens in Vegas?” Curran: Yeah, “What Happens in Vegas.” You know, all the romantic movies.

GRIZZLY GAME DAY / FROM PAGE A2

Sanders Continued

Sanders checked all the right boxes. “The thing what kind of separates Yamen is how mature he is,” Semore said. “He’s a grown adult, the way he handles himself and prepares. He knows what he wants out of life and that really impressed me the first couple conversations we had. “That’s kinda what we were looking for when we were recruiting him. He has physical tools obviously — he wouldn’t have been at Arizona if he didn’t — but we were looking for some older guys and leadership after guys like J-Whit graduated.” Sanders claimed one of Montana’s two starting spots at safety by the second game of last season alongside Whitted. He made 64 tackles while starting the remainder of the year and readied himself for 2016 as the team’s second-leading returning tackler. There were high expectations for Sanders, a rare senior on Montana’s defense who was named to the all-Big Sky Conference preseason honors team. The results have been mixed, though. A high ankle sprain suffered in fall camp lingered into the regular season. Sanders missed the first two games before entering the starting lineup for the first time at Cal Poly on Sept. 24. The safety was a step slower than Griz fans were used to seeing and played more snaps than Semore and Stitt had planned because of injuries at the position. He’s certainly got the look of a next-level player, an impressive physical specimen hoping for a shot in a league that has recently put more emphasis on taller defensive backs. GRIZZLY GAME DAY | STRENGTHS

THE EDGE Missoulian reporter AJ Mazzolini assesses the strengths of both teams

QUARTERBACK: He’s made a few too many mistakes the past two weeks, but Brady Gustafson is climbing the FCS ranks as a passer. The big senior is up to fourth in the nation in passing yards (2,593) and fifth in passing touchdowns (24). OFFENSIVE LINE: The Bengals have allowed the most sacks per game of any team in the Big Sky, 25 in just eight outings (3.15 spg). Saturday will be a fun day for the Griz defensive front against ISU’s sixth combination of linemen this year.

Technology to drive productivity

RUNNING BACK: Only one Big Sky team has attempted fewer rushes than the Grizzlies’ 253 on the year and that’s the Bengals (220). Only one team has fewer than the Bengals’ 10 rushing TDs. Idaho State is proving it’s no threat on the ground so the Griz get the edge here almost by default, even though they’ll likely be without leading rusher Jeremy Calhoun. WIDE RECEIVERS: KW Williams is a handful to guard on the outside for Idaho State with 553 yards and eight TDs. But hey, there’s only one of him unlike last week when EWU’s allstar three-some chewed up the Griz defense. On the other side Montana has had a bad case of the drops so we’ll give ISU the point here. DEFENSIVE LINE: Idaho State ranks near the bottom of the league in rushing defense at 226.9 ypg, but some of that comes from its issues at Portland State last month. The Bengals opened the door to PSU’s backs for 531 rush yards. That alone will lose them this category. LINEBACKERS: Mario Jenkins leads the Big Sky in tackles with 10.2 per game. Teams have neutralized Montana’s fearsome backers in the past two games, which is either a sign that opponents are figuring ways around them or it’s just a temporary downturn. We’ll see how they fare this week before making a judgment. DEFENSIVE BACKS: The Griz DBs have struggled with the big play the past two weeks but have done a decent job limiting pass-heavy opponents Northern Arizona and Eastern Washington in yards overall. Against a much less dangerous passing team, they should shine once again.

• Document Systems • Professional Displays • Aquos Boards • Cloud Portal Services

SPECIAL TEAMS: Idaho State hasn’t made a field goal since the first week of the season and has only attempted two all year. That’s bizarre. Meanwhile the Griz are missing PATs left and right — and left again — with eight in the past five weeks. Can nobody take this category? INTANGIBLES: Advantage Griz. Idaho State hasn’t won a game in Missoula since before Washington-Grizzly Stadium opened. ISU’s last triumph at Montana was waaaay back in 1983. The Griz own a 28-2 edge in games since 1985 with those two losses coming by a combined eight points.

HOW WE SEE THE BIG SKY They are what we thought they were. Remember those famous words from 10 years ago? The entertaining tirade by the late Dennis Green, ex-coach of the Minnesota Vikings and Phoenix Cardinals? Look it up on Youtube. It’s worth your time. Those seven words sum up how I feel about the 19th-ranked Montana football team. Back in July, I was surprised when all those tradition-blind Big Sky Conference pollsters predicted the Grizzlies to finish second in the league. Right now they’re in eighth. That’s lower than expected but they’ll likely win their last three and finish around fourth with a playoff berth in hand. If you’re surprised by Montana’s 5-3 record, you’re not seeing clearly. What’s that you say? What about those impressive home wins over Southern Utah, Mississippi Valley State and Sacramento State last month? I say big hairy deal. Those teams are a combined 5-20. GRIZZLY GAME DAY / COLLEGE FOOTBALL

LSU, Alabama among FBS highlights RALPH D. RUSSO AP College Football Writer

Auburn and LSU played the last weekend of September and both coaches were under pressure. The ugly game had a bizarre ending. The next day LSU fired coach Les Miles, while Auburn and Gus Malzahn were feeling fortunate to be 2-2. Now it’s November and both SEC West Tigers are in the race not only for a conference championship, but perhaps a spot in the College Football Playoff. No. 15 LSU hosts No. 1 Alabama on Saturday for what amounts to an elimination game for the Tigers. Even with a victory, the Tigers would need help to win the West, an amazing prospect given the first month of the season. Snapping a five-game losing streak to the Crimson Tide would do wonders for interim coach Ed Orgeron as he tries to convince LSU to make him coach-forgood. No. 11 Auburn faces a much easier task Saturday with Vanderbilt at home. The Tigers have won five straight and if they get to the Iron Bowl without another loss, beating Alabama could earn them a trip to the SEC title game. How things have changed. The picks:
