Santa Socks bring the spirit of Christmas to needy veterans By Dominic Farrenkopf The holiday season can be a lonely time for shut-in veterans, but a Missoula-based organization is working diligently to relieve some of that loneliness. The United Veterans Council of Missoula and Ravalli Counties deploys their “troops” to combat veterans’ loneliness with a vast array of artillery in the form of outreach programs. In November the “Thanksgiving Turkey Express” delivers food boxes to needy veterans and their families. In February United Veterans Council delivers Valentine’s Day cards to shut-in veterans as “Cupid’s Army.” Around Easter and Independence Day their “Bunny Rabbit Hop” and “Firecracker Brigade” visit veterans. However, during the month of December, the United Veterans Council carries out one of their most popular programs called “Santa Socks.” “Santa Socks is a program that started in 2008. United Veterans Council volunteers in Missoula and Ravalli counties saw the need to help sick and lonely veterans in our area with a simple act of kindness,” said Susan Renea, an organizer. “Eric Wells is a Navy veteran from Stevensville. He felt our area needed a program like this, and I named it Santa Socks. I am chief magical elf and organizer of the Missoula branch of Santa Socks. My name is Santa Baby and I contact nursing homes, assisted living and independent living complexes

The entire “gang” of magical elves making their merry rounds with Santa Claus himself. Here they are leaving Grizzly Peak on their way to Hunter’s Glen in 2014. Photo provide by Susan Reneau around Missoula and then schedule our visits.” The Santa Socks are filled to the brim with hand-knitted caps, packaged candies, small Army men and toys, candy canes, toiletries and a pencil. Santa and his magical elves also distribute lap quilts based on availability and need.

WAVES Navy veteran, Frances Andersen, lives in Missoula at Grizzly Peak and receives a Santa Sock each year. Andersen also received a lap quilt. “One year I got a lap quilt, which was very nice. It is red and white and I still have it,” Andersen said. “The socks are made more for a man, so I give the socks to

my son, who is also a veteran.” Andersen was stationed in Miami, Florida during WWII. She worked in the receiving station in clothing stores and small retail outlets. Andersen, who will be 98 in January, looks forward to receiving a Santa Sock each year and loves the thought behind the program. “It’s nice that people remember

2015 us,” she said. Making the Santa Socks mission possible requires a great deal of volunteer labor. “We have plenty of volunteers to fill the socks, but we do need volunteers for deliveries,” Reneau said. “The delivery process takes a long time and is very laborintensive. Both veterans and non-veterans are welcome to contribute their time. It does require people who are physically active and willing to talk to elderly and sick veterans. Children of all ages are welcome, but parents must be with them at all times. Some of our best magical elves in the past have been children.” Linda Johnson has been a Santa Socks volunteer for the last seven years. Johnson served in the Army Reserves for 23 years. She was stationed in Helena at a medical unit, the 396th Station Hospital.

Now, as an active member of the United Veterans Council and American Legion Post 27 in Missoula, Johnson assembles Santa Socks and enjoys delivering them. “I really like to take the Santa Socks out to the veterans who are in the nursing homes and retirement homes and to the Poverello Center and Valor House. It is such a wonderful, special feeling to be able to present the veterans there with the Santa Socks and see the smiles on their faces. Many of them have no visitors and they like to talk about their time in service. I talk to them, thank them for serving our country and give them a Christmas hug,” Johnson said. Reneau relies on recommendations from VFW and American Legion posts in the area for veterans’ names. Veterans from the Missoula and Bitterroot Valleys

Holiday

can receive a Santa Sock. People who hear of this program also submit names to Reneau. “Nursing homes, assisted livings and law enforcement offices also provide names.” Reneau said. “We also have magical elf intelligence.” Funding for this program is made possible through donations from individuals and local businesses. Costco, Walmart on Mullan Road, Target, Double Tree Hotel, Super 8, Garden Hilton, Motel 6, Majestic Madness Beauty Parlor and Staybridge Motel have contributed so far. “It is still early in the season and more donations are likely to come in as the weeks go by,” Reneau said. For Reneau, the Santa Socks program is deeply personal. “Over and over again, the tears of thanks veterans give to the magical elves are priceless. The veterans receive a simple pair of

7

filled, warm socks, a hug and a ‘thank you’ for their service to our nation and it just means so much to them.” Reneau smiled and continued, “With each delivery, we spend time speaking with the veteran and we sing at least one Christmas or holiday song. The directors of area nursing homes start looking for us in early December now. Santa Socks makes my Christmas, as it does for all of my band of magical elves.” Santa Socks will be delivered by Santa and his magical elves Dec. 15-25. To receive a Santa Sock, donate to the program or volunteer, contact Susan Reneau by email at bluemountain@montana. com. She can also be reached by calling 719-661-4037. Taxdeductible donations should be made to United Veterans Council, PO Box 5201, Missoula, MT 598065201.

You know the type. They are very particular about their libations, often choosing from the top shelf, and utterly devoted to the art of a good drink. For their discerning tastes, we’d suggest Four Roses Small Batch bourbon, Remy Martin 1738 cognac, or Snow Queen Vodka. Any of these should satisfy their sophisticated tastes. Just don’t tell them there’s no difference between neat and on the rocks- unless you’re looking for a stern lecture, that is.

Why shouldn’t your drink be as sugary sweet as the candies, cookies, and pies that fill both tables and tummies during the holidays? For your sweet-loving friends, try filling their stockings with a Bailey’s gift sets, or a bottle of Crown Royal Apple. Just be prepared, because the syrupy sweet response may be like eating a whole plate of cookies by yourself- thoroughly satisfying and liable to induce nausea.

Through all their mixing triumphs (the Ultimate Mojito!) and failures (Jager and Clamato!), the mixer is always game to try something new. While it’s hard to guess where their mixology instincts will take them next, one thing’s for sure- they’ll always need a good, hearty liquor to build on. How about a bottle of Grey Goose vodka? Or a tried and true classic like Beefeater gin? Or Jose Cuervo tequila? They’ll thank you from the bottom of their little mad scientist hearts.

Everyone has that friend who staunchly supports local distilleries and breweries. Who can blame them? Montana is an amazing state, so why look elsewhere for good alcohol? If you’re looking for beer, there’s Bayern, Kettlehouse, and Big Sky. If you’re looking for something stiffer, there’s spirits from Flathead Vodka and Montgomery Distillery. No matter the inclinations, there’s a drink that will satisfy both their tastes and their fierce loyalty to local ties.

Does it not taste like rubbing alcohol? Is it in a glass? Is the glass in my hand? Then it’s a good drink. No need to fuss over distilling processes, grain quality, or what wood the casks are made of- just keep it simple, stupid. A bottle of Absolut, Tanqueray, or Jameson will do fine for your no-nonsense acquaintances. Just slap a bow on it and call it good. Christmas complete.

Anything less than the absolute best will never do for the astute tastes of these friends and family. Hennesy, Glenfiddich, Dom Pérignon, Courvoisierthese are not only some of the most respected names in liquor, but are to some the only names in liquor. These aren’t just top shelf- they’re the liquors you keep stashed under lock and key, meant to be savored, not sipped, and definitely not swigged. Whatever their preference, these suggestions won’t offend their impeccable taste.
