giving by rachel crisp philips
T
he holiday season is all about giving thanks and giving gifts. But it is just as important, perhaps even more so, to give back to the local community in other small ways. Simple gestures, multiplied by folks with good intentions, cause ripples that enrich the entire region. Here are several ways to help others survive this winter: Volunteer When you’re short of funds, but big of heart, volunteering can make the most impactful difference in someone else’s life. Many local charities have a need for volunteer staff year-round, and there’s a lot of experience to be gained from working solely to help others. But with over 600 charitable organizations in Missoula, it can be difficult to find a place to start. To help helpers find opportunities, the website volunteermissoula.org provides resources to connect volunteers with community involvement. Be sure to check with your employer as well, as sometimes companies will be flexible with schedules or even offer paid time off for employees to complete volunteer work. Charitable Donations If money is no object, or if you just happen to have a little extra to spare, financial donations to local charities inject funding right where it’s most needed. There may even be loved ones on your gift list who would appreciate a donation made in their name to a charity they personally support already. Charitable contributions are also tax deductible, so may help out your bottom line long after the money has helped those in need. Missoula Food Bank Donating items to the local food bank is often one of the easiest ways to make a direct impact on the urgent needs of folks who need help. Non-perishable foods are always needed to help the food bank provide nutritional security to those who need it the most. Pay it Forward To simply give without expectation of reward, or even the opportunity of thanks, is often the most satisfying way to be charitable. Next time generosity strikes, consider paying for the coffee or groceries of the person behind you in line, or leaving an abnormally large tip when settling a restaurant bill.
Other ideas include anonymously paying off someone else’s layaway purchase or contributing a portion of your energy bill to the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program. Community Coats The Community Coats program helps keep local families warm by providing donated winter gear to those in need. Drop off coats and gloves at the box in front of Eddie Bauer by December 24, where they will be cleaned and mended by Missoula Textiles before being distributed by the Salvation Army. When You’re Smiling Sometimes something as straightforward as a change in your own attitude can be enough to spread waves of joy throughout your interactions. While it can sometimes be hard to keep smiling in the depths of winter, practicing gratitude daily has been shown to increase mood and overall happiness. Start simple by keeping a gratitude journal and aim to note at least one thing per day to be thankful for. Over time, patterns of gratitude will emerge and a thankful outlook will become contagious as positivity attracts more positivity.
Holiday Wish Tree To help bring Christmas to life for youth and seniors in need, participate in the Holiday Wish Tree by picking a tag off the tree in front of Eddie Bauer between 11am - 6pm before December 17. This program is a collaborative effort between Southgate Mall, the Department of Family Services, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Missoula and Home Instead Senior Care. Animals Need Help Too Don’t forget Fido when finding ways to give to others. The local shelters are often in need of supplies such as extra food, blankets, and cat litter. Call ahead to ask what is most urgently needed at any given time and help make a fuzzy one’s life a little finer. Griz Dip There’s few places where a jump into icy water benefits charity, but that’s the aim of the Griz Dip Polar Plunge. Taking place December 2 from 11am 1pm, before the Parade of Lights, this event provides an unique opportunity for individuals, organizations and businesses to support Special Olympics Montana. Contact Special Olympics Montana to get involved.
