Venue Anyone planning a special event, such as a wedding, concert or fundraiser will understand the importance of finding the right venue. You don’t want to deal with a large crowd on your property. Hosting a major event at your home or office will be a hassle. A classy, well-equipped venue can make your gathering a success. Here are a few things to consider when choosing a location for your special occasion. Less Stress Event planning is stressful. You will need a venue that lowers your anxiety level before and during the event. This is especially true of weddings. Whether you or a friend is getting married, you will need an experienced venue staff. The employees should treat you and your guests with respect and grace. Venues can be very helpful with event planning. Top-quality venues regularly do business with many vendors. They can give you advice on finding other vendors in your area. They might be able to assist you in the planning phase, which can help you relax as you plan for the big day. Call The Shots On the other hand, you should control the entire process. Be sure the details are meeting your expectations. When you feel a venue is pressuring you or even making decisions without your consent,

Read your contract carefully. Unless you are on a very tight budget, look for a full-service venue that will set up and tear down as part of their pricing package.

end the relationship. You need people who will work with you, not people who only consider what is easiest for them. The theme, style and decor of the event should be your choice. Leave the smaller details to the venue’s staff and management. Doing so will free you to focus on important aspects of the occasion.

Included Services Every venue is different when it comes to services. Some places offer hardly any services, while others help you set up and clean up. Placing tables and chairs is time-consuming. Taking down decorations and equipment afterward can put a sour ending on a fabulous day.

Technical Needs Your event might require special technical needs. For example, sound and lighting is vital for a musical event. The venue should have the right electrical and audio connections, as well as places to route and hide cables safely. Weddings can also be a technical challenge. The band or DJ will need to have clear sound and a dance floor. Wedding photographers might have preferences about where backdrops and special lighting will be placed. The best venues can help you have a successful, stress-free event. Finding the right place to experience your special occasion will be memorable for you and your guests.

Water Treatment Options Choose a reputable water treatment company that truly knows how to address your specific water problems. Your water should be tested with a free in home water analysis to determine the right solution to your water problems. Inexpensive water filters are tempting but most likely will not be enough to solve your problems for good. The following is the most common water problems: Hard Water The most common water problem is hard water. Calcium and magnesium ions are the main cause of hardness which can cause stains or spots on appliances & fixtures, soap scum buildup and scaling in appliances which cause problems and lead to costly repairs. Water that is 7 to 10.5 gpg is considered very hard. The most common treatment for hard water is an ion exchange water softener. A water softener reduces cleaning products that you use in dishwashers & washing machines. New technology such as Culligan’s H.E. (high-efficiency) water softener softens water using less salt, less energy & monitors water quality and only regenerates on demand. Iron & Odor Another common problem is iron and/or odor in water. Furniture Store Furniture gives your house a personality. It creates an ambiance that sends a message to guests about who you are. Do you have style? What are your values? With all the eclectic choices available today, there has never been a better time to buy new furniture. Whether your budget is big or small, choosing new seating, tables and accessories can make a big difference in your daily life. Quality That Lasts Look for a store that sells quality, long-lasting furniture. While inexpensive accessories can be bought cheaply and changed often, big furniture investments – sofas, dining tables, and the like – need to be purchases for the long term. That means putting solid construction before a pretty style. Solid construction isn’t always apparent at first glance. It should feel solid, not flimsy, of course. Beyond that, find out as much information as possible about the frame, materials, and what kind of warranty it comes with. A well-trained staff can inform you about their furniture, how they’re built and why the construction matters. The best stores have employees who act as guides and teachers, not pushy salespeople. Value, Not Just Price It is best to pay more for a quality piece than to try to save

money on something that will not last in the long term. The bigger the investment, the more important the design and build quality become. Concentrate on finding the best value. An inexpensive sofa will not be a good value if it is built with cheap and weak materials. Likewise, the most expensive love seat will not be a wise investment if

the frame is not built solidly. It’s best to look for brands with a long track record and good reputation. Service, Delivery Every store has a different customer service policy. Choose a store that is well known for being loyal to its customers. Inquire about return policies. Some furniture stores will allow

you to exchange an item within a time limit if it doesn’t meet your expectations. Learn what fees are involved if you have to return an item – if that is allowed at all. As well, ask about the store’s delivery policy, including how much it costs, how far they’ll deliver and how quickly your furniture will arrive. If you are comparison shopping, factor the delivery cost when considering different stores. A low-priced couch will not save you money if it comes with an expensive delivery fee. It may be worth it to pay a little more for the couch if free or reduced cost delivery is available. The bottom line is that there are only two things that matter: the quality of the furniture you are purchasing, and the level of service you receive. Once you discover them both, furniture shopping can be a fun experience that that will beautify your home for many years.

Real Estate Agency A reputable Realtor® and real estate agency can make a big difference when you buy or sell a home. There are thousands of dollars at stake. You could get the asking price or maybe you will have to settle for the best offer on the table. A real estate agency will act in your best interests. That’s why it’s essential to find a high-quality real estate agency. Reputation Reputation says a lot about a company. What do people say about their services? Ask your family, friends and neighbors for recommendations. Their experiences will guide you toward a reputable agency. Once you have a list of possibilities, do some research. Find out how long the agency has been in business. Ideally, you want people who know your community. If the real estate agency is merely a side business, it might not give you the best results. Buying and selling homes is a full time job. Look on the Internet and read customer service reviews. They should also have an impact on your overall impression of an agency. Research Once you have narrowed your list, contact some businesses and ask them questions. You should know about their listings, fees and commissions and what services you will receive for those fees.

If an agency is focusing on their own best interests rather than in marketing your home, you should drop them from you list. You need someone who will help you. Choose an agency that has connections with the community, a sharp understanding of neighborhoods that interest you and solid contacts with other realty companies. This assumes major importance when you’re selling your current house, because the agency usually handles the sale while the Realtor helps you find your new one. The marketing strategy and advertising is what makes each agency unique. It will greatly

influence the sale of your home. Compare Although most companies might look the same, real estate agencies have a preference for the kind of properties they show or sell. These concentrations might include commercial properties or high-end homes. Try to find an agent within that company with a focus on selling homes similar to yours. Look at an agency’s listings to see if your home would fit in nicely with their existing clients. If you were purchasing a home, would you find their listings easy to read and informative? The size of the agency will have

an impact on your experience. Small agencies can provide more personalized service, but they may not have the networking advantages of a large company. Big agencies have more opportunities to network and sell your home, but they may have to divide their time among many clients. Question Be prepared to ask an agency the following questions if you are selling your home: • How will you advertise my home? Will you use the Internet and newspapers? • How many pictures of my house will appear online? • On which sites will my home be featured? • Do you have other homes that have recently been sold in this price range? • How long has the agency been selling homes in my neighborhood? • What makes your agency unique? The two biggest financial decisions you will make in your lifetime is buying and selling a home. Protect your investment and peace of mind by choosing the best and most trustworthy real estate agency and agent you can find.

Used Car Dealer Buying a used car can be a challenge. You need to find a gently used vehicle without paying more than necessary. You also don’t want to be stuck with a lemon. Avoid purchasing a clunker by doing your research before setting foot in a dealership. Being well-informed will help you avoid unnecessary hardship. Have a good idea of what you want before speaking to anyone. Then follow these tips to find a good used car dealer. Choose Your Vehicle Knowing what you want will help you save time and effort. You may not know the exact make and model, but at least have an idea of the automobile type. Are you searching for a sports car, SUV, pickup truck or van? Focusing on the type of car will help you avoid wasting time visiting dealerships that don’t sell the type of used car you need. Search the “Blue Book” Figuring out your budget is essential. How much do you want to spend? Search the Kelly Blue Book (http://kbb.com) or the NADA Guides (http://nada.com/) for what you might spend on the type of car you prefer. Also, search the Internet and car websites to get a firm idea of asking prices for your type of car. Talk to Friends and Family Friends and family members who enjoy cars as a hobby will have information for you about reliable

dealers. If they have recently purchased a used car, they will have experience with who treated them right - as well as who didn’t. Word of mouth is one of the best indicators of a reliable business. When you find a business that gets positive reviews, make sure to check them out.

want to visit. Call and make appointments with salespeople. Ask them about financing and extended warranties. Both may figure prominently in your decision-making process. Try to speak with everyone on your list. Comparing as many people as possible will help you avoid making a hasty, uninformed Make Appointments Compile a list of dealerships you decision.

Visit the Dealerships See each dealership in person to look for cars that match your type. Going there will help you feel confident about doing business with them. When you look at cars, ask about maintenance and previous owner reports. Don’t purchase a car on the first visit. Just take a business card and move on to the next dealership on your list. Once you have seen everyone on your list, research customer reviews of the ones who impressed you the most. You will find the best dealership by considering who will give you the best deal and who has received the best customer reviews. Finding the right used car dealer is almost as important as buying the best used vehicle. After all, you want to make sure you are doing business with reputable people who will stand behind their sales.

Sewing Machine Sewing is a popular and practical hobby. It is a fantastic way to make crafts, clothes and other items. But purchasing a sewing machine can be a major investment. Quality models have prices comparable to home appliances. How do you find the best machine? Research Sewing magazines and websites offer detailed customer reviewers. Internet forums and blogs will also offer evaluations of major brands. You will find positive and negative comments so you can make your own choice. Consumer Reports provides side-by-side comparisons of specific brands and their competitors. Budget Consider what you need and want in a sewing machine, including must-have and preferred features. Remember that accessories and attachments will add to the overall cost of the machine. Take care not to go over your budget. On the other hand, a cheap, off-brand machine will give you a false savings. Inexpensive products will not last long. If you use your sewing machine frequently, buy the best product you can afford. Perhaps it means purchasing a very basic machine. Don’t worry, as many manufacturers sell attachments and accessories separately. You can always buy them as you need them.

APRIL 2014

Purpose The purpose of the machine is another factor. Are you using it to sew clothes, make alterations, quilt or for embroidery work? Is upholstery part of your repertoire? Compare various brands’ and models’ ability to meet your needs. Compact models are convenient for lightweight work. You may be able to sew on the dining room table. Complex machines might require a dedicated area in your house.

Test Run Never buy a sewing machine unseen. Visit several sewing stores and try a few different models. It will allow you to build a relationship with a store that you like and trust. Dealers understand the advantages and disadvantages of each model. They will give you an honest assessment of features and benefits. Your machine will likely need repair and maintenance periodically, so choose a sewing center you like.

Make a list of features before you go shopping. Note brands and models that interest you. Carry around swatches of cloth and a spool of thread so you can try out various machines. It is the best way to evaluate a product’s performance. Ask yourself if it was easy to thread and adjust the tension on the machine. Ease-of-use is going to be an important factor. Your personal comfort comes into play as well. Does the machine hum along or does it make an irritating noise? Always check on the warranty and maintenance schedule, which should be included in the price of the machine. Look through the owner’s manuals of each machine. Finally, look at the accessories and attachments that come with your machine. Some shop owners might be able to let you swap one attachment for another, or purchase a group of them as a package deal. Communicating with the retailer will help you get the best bargain for your preferred machine.

These medical professionals specialize in foot or ankle problems, including pain and swelling, psoriasis, pinched nerves and heel pain. one who communicates well with you, answers questions patiently, solves immediate problems as quickly as possible and helps you with ongoing care. It shouldn’t be hard to find someone who is a good fit for your personality. Feeling comfortable with your doctor is key to regaining your health.

Don’t wait until you can’t walk or the pain keeps you up at night. Here are some ways you can find a good podiatrist. Get References Your first step toward finding the right podiatrist is getting references from other medical professionals. If someone in your social network has had a foot problem, ask them about their experience. Who treated their problem? High-quality doctors typically have a large roster of patients who are happy to recommend them. Check with your family doctor or other medical professional for advice on podiatrists with strong reputations. Know Their Specialty There are many specialties within the field of podiatry. It has become more common in recent years for some podiatrists to focus on sports-related injuries to the foot. Continuing Adult Ed. No one stops learning. It is a lifelong process. Continuing education can introduce you to new skills, ideas and maybe even a different career. Schools and universities around the country offer a wide array of courses for adults and recent college graduates. When you want to update your skills or your job requires ongoing training, continuing education can be a smart choice. Required Training When you need to fulfill a training requirement for your career, continuing education can be particularly helpful. In the medical industry, for example, you might need training to understand new developments and techniques. If you need courses for this reason, ask yourself two questions: Does the course fill the requirements, and it is convenient for your schedule? Make sure the course will fulfill your obligation. In many cases,

the instructor’s background and course curriculum need to be very specific in order to earn or renew a certification. Verify with your employer to be certain you have the right course. Many adult education courses are offered on nights and weekends so that working people can attend. Some programs also offer online or correspondence options. It can

be a good option if it fits into your lifestyle. But not everyone is a good fit for online training. You must be motivated and show initiative in order to complete the assignments. However, it is an increasingly common option because it is convenient. flexible and often more affordable.

Personal Enrichment Anyone who has ever wanted to learn a new hobby, computer skill or sport can jump-start that interest through continuing education. It is a fantastic way to enrich your life without breaking your budget. Rather than spending thousands of dollars in tuition at a university program, you can spend a few hundred dollars to take courses that pique your interest. Begin your journey by finding all the continuing education courses offered in your area. They might be at your local civic center, chamber of commerce, or college. Look at the schedules and prices for each course. Highlight the ones you prefer. Then sign up and attend the class. It really is that simple. Soon you will be making new friends and learning skills. The rewards will extend beyond the classroom.

How to choose a

Paint Store Paint is one of the best ways to update the look of your house without breaking your budget. A coat of fresh paint on the walls can change the atmosphere quickly and easily. Whether you do it yourself or hire a professional, finding a great paint store is a key part of the process. Keep these aspects in mind when choosing a paint store. Selection You can choose from an enormous variety of paint colors and textures. Oil-based and latex paints are available in a wide range of finishes and compositions. They are also available in different grades. Cheaper paint may be thinner, messier and harder to apply than its thicker, premium competitor. You will also have to determine if you want to work with a primer. Some brands require specific primer, while other brands have products that are “paint and primer in one.” A good paint store will have far more than just one line of products. They will stock paint designed for concrete floors, industrial paints that can withstand certain temperatures or chemicals, paints that will reduce mold growth. It may seem overwhelming, but more choices will give you better results and hold up over time. Knowing your specific priorities and considerations will help guide

project, from product selection to prep work and clean-up.

you toward the right paint for your project. Help Don’t be afraid of getting expert advice. Even the most experienced housepainters sometimes need guidance. That’s where a quality paint store comes in. Not only will the best stores sell good products, they will also have staff people who are ready to offer

suggestions and recommendations for your particular situation. They are very knowledgeable about their products. They should also offer tips on how to apply the paint. You can spend money on high-end paint products, but applying them incorrectly will give you terrible results. The paint store you choose should be able to offer you expert advice on all aspects of your

Design With so many color and style selections, a good paint store can offer design advice for getting the look you want. When it comes to paint, there are endless possibilities, and the best paint store staff will help you navigate through the selections. They will know the latest style trends and offer recommendations for color palettes that work well together. If you bring them a fabric swatch, they should be able to create a duplicate color in paint. Choosing the right paints and accessories takes experience and – quite often – some trial and error. Be certain to get prices for mixing sample colors up front. Don’t be afraid to put small quantities of these sample colors on your walls to test out your design. Once you’ve selected the right colors, go back to the store to purchase larger quantities of the paints to complete your project.

How to choose an

Urgent Care Center When your physician isn’t available or you need rapid medical attention, your local urgent care center can assist you. In fact, it might even be better than the emergency room at your local hospital. Health problems happen at inconvenient times. You may not have time to ask about various facilities in your area. Now is the time to find the best urgent care center that will help you in your hour of need. for transport.

Here are some factors to consider when selecting an urgent care center. Location You will need a center located near your home or work. Time is of the essence. You will also need to understand the level of care they provide, hours of operation and insurance plans they accept. Find out about your town’s urgent care centers before you need medical assistance. Check the Yellow Pages, your local newspaper or the Internet. See if your primary care physician is associated with a particular urgent care center. If so, they will probably have your medical record already available online. People who live in cities probably have several choices within a short distance. But if you live in a rural area, there might be only one option. Look closely at what the center can offer you. Sometimes, rural residents can get better care at an emergency room.

Billing & Payment Handling payment arrangements is your responsibility. You must know if your insurance covers the doctors in the facility. If you have no insurance, flexible payment plans can usually be arranged. Most facilities also accept credit cards, checks and cash as payment.

Resources An urgent care center is an excellent backup for the times you can’t see your own primary care physician. The best facilities are open seven days a week and offer extended hours. Most centers have the equipment to contend with colds, flu, ear infections, sprains, allergies, etc. They could also help you regain control of your blood

pressure. Urgent care providers are typically good at treating simple fractures and stitching wounds. When they don’t have the resources to treat an urgent medical issue, the center may recommend and arrange transport of a patient to an emergency facility in an ambulance. The urgent care staff will work to stabilize a patient while they wait

When you need care now!

Convenience Patients at urgent care clinics usually have good experiences. They appreciate the convenience of being seen without an appointment. It is especially helpful when you are sick and can’t see your regular physician. You don’t want to sit in a waiting room all day, nor do you want to suffer for days while waiting for an appointment. At an urgent care facility, you can see a doctor, get a prescription if needed and go home to recuperate.

Credit Union In these economic times, many people are finding out that credit unions have a lot to offer. It is a great place to find a financial solution while helping your community.

Credit unions are not-forprofit operations owned by their members. They are not owned by individuals or conglomerates. Credit Unions usually charge less in fees than for-profit banks. Any dividends go to the members instead of shareholders. These days, credit unions are a good deal. They usually offer better interest rates on savings accounts and competitive rates on various loans. You might get a fantastic rate on a student loan, mortgage, auto loan or credit card. Also, the federal government stands behind credit unions. Most deposits are insured up to $250,000. Research Selecting a credit union is not difficult. The first step is to research those in your community and their membership requirements. Some credit unions are available to employees of specific companies, groups of public service or school employees, but may extend eligibility to anyone willing to follow their membership requirements. You might be asked to join a food coop or other organization in order to qualify for membership.

A simple Internet search is an excellent starting point. Develop a list of credit unions in your area. Then narrow your possibilities by researching eligibility, services offered and fees charged by each credit union. Verify the current interest rates on their accounts. If you can’t find the rates online, call and ask them for the percentages Find out if there are any fees associated with the accounts you want to open. As with traditional

savings and loan banks, you might be required to pay a fee if you fall below a minimum balance. Check about other requirements. You might need to use your debit card a certain amount of times each month. If you are in the market for a specific loan, research to see if the loan is issued by the credit union. Once you have found several credit unions that offer that type of loan, compare interest rates and specials to see who has the best deal.

Costs & Convenience Of course, convenience is something to keep in mind. Check for availability of online services, weekday and weekend hours, and the locations of branches and ATMs. You should also understand any fees associated with ATM or debit card usage. If you use an ATM frequently, those charges can add up fast. Some credit unions belong to a national network of credit unions for shared services. It might mean more access to ATMs and other services in case you move or go on vacation. If you have children attending college in other cities, this can be useful. Compare Once you have completed your research, make a list of the advantages and disadvantages of each credit union. You can easily compare them. Upon choosing your credit union, visit the branch so you can understand all of the services. Learn more about the benefits of membership. With a little research, you will find that a credit union is a fantastic way to avoid the hassles often experienced from conventional banks.

How to choose a

Hotel

Staying at a hotel is a great respite away from stress or your familiar routine. With great amenities, gorgeous scenery and room service, you can use time to simply lie on a bed and relax. Or maybe you are searching for a place to stay during a family vacation, business or road trip. Perhaps you are in between homes and need temporary accommodations. Whatever your reason for staying in a hotel, you should be careful in your decision-making process. Pick a hotel that has a perfect combination of cleanliness, fun amenities and superior customer service. Search Conduct an online search for all hotels that are in close proximity to where you will be. If you have a meeting in a city, for example, you should look for hotels in the area of your destination. When you are simply looking for a vacation hotel, be sure to look for a facility in a central area. It is likely that there will be many hotels in your desired area. Choose the five closest hotels. That way, you will not have to drive or walk far to reach your ultimate destination. Amenities The next thing to consider is the amenities. Visit the websites of each hotel you have chosen and look at the features and services. If you are staying for one-night, you might be looking for a quiet spot to sleep. But every hotel offers different amenities. If you are staying for several days, you might want free access to a fitness center. Other places have a continental breakfast at no extra charge. Look for free services, such as cable television with movie channels, kitchenettes, refrigerators and gaming consoles. And of course,

The more reviews you read, the better. It will give you a balanced assessment of a hotel. Previous customers can answer questions about the friendliness of the staff and the condition of the rooms. Former hotel guests are typically unafraid of talking about negative experiences at an establishment. These reviews could serve as a prediction of how the hotel staff will treat you. When you see a significant amount of negative comments and ratings, remove the hotel from your list.

free Wi-Fi is a must. Prices Your budget will play a huge part in your decision. Research a few locations to see which hotels offer the services you want for the least amount of money. You might be qualified for a discount. Hotels and resorts often offer discounts to people who are in the military, have AAA memberships or are senior citizens. If you are on a business

trip, your employer may have an arrangement with selected hotels to provide a discount for employees. Either way, booking online is also likely to be cheaper than calling the front desk directly. Reviews Customer reviews will give you important insight on specific locations. Let the reviews guide you on how you will spend your money.

Selection Pick the top two hotels from your list. If possible, visit them so you can get a feel for the establishment. If they are part of a chain, you could visit another branch facility and ask questions. The concierge and staff should be happy to talk to you. Some of them may have even stayed at the hotel on your list. After you have taken all the necessary steps, make an informed decision. The extra time and effort will ensure a pleasant and fun stay. After all, your hotel serves as your home away from home.

Quality Hearing Aid Hearing loss affects more than 40 million Americans. People of all ages and backgrounds experience hearing impairment or loss. Many people seek out hearing aids to help relieve the serious consequences of this condition. As a result, they lead richer, fuller lives. These devices are highly technical, customized to meet each individual’s listening needs and lifestyles. Types of hearing loss vary widely, and are quite different from person to person. Innovations in hearing aids include using digital processors to isolate and amplify the frequencies a patient needs most. Many of the latest hearing aids are so small they are practically invisible. Styles The good news is that you no longer need to purchase bulky, obvious hearing aids of yesteryear. The most popular hearing aids on the market tuck discreetly behind the ear. Other styles include half-shell, full-shell, and completely-in-thecanal. Because these hearing aids come in a range of sizes and prices, consult with a specialist to help you choose the right style to fit your needs.

Internal Electronics The design of a hearing aid will make a large difference in cost and performance. Two devices may look similar but produce dramatically different results. The difference is in the internal electronics. Nearly all hearing aids available today are digital. They will help filter out background noise, enabling the wearer to hear a conversation more clearly. This

Some examples include: BLUETOOTH CONNECTIONS: You could connect wirelessly to Bluetooth electronic devices, such as smart phones. It allows you to hear phone conversations directly through your hearing aid. TELEPHONE ADAPTERS: This feature senses when you are talking on the phone and adjusts the setting to make it clearer during your conversation. DIRECTIONAL MICROPHONE: You can adjust your device to better focus on sound that is directly in front of you. You may also change the setting to a more general setting that would be useful at public performances or concerts. REMOTE CONTROL: Some devices allow you to adjust the settings without touching it. A remote control can change the directional microphone or level of amplification.

How to choose a

Financial Advisor You don’t need to be rich to have a financial advisor. These professionals are trained to help you become rich, or at least use your money wisely. A great financial planner will teach you how to manage household expenses, pay the lowest taxes possible and how to plan for retirement. He or she will also tell you about handling investments. They can guide you through unstable economic times. Not everyone has the same financial goals. A good advisor will help you plan for your future. To find a reliable financial advisor, start by asking your social network. Friends and family may have some suggestions. Remember, research each advisor with an eye toward your own situation and goals. Once you have a list of three or four possibilities, look closer at each choice. It might be a good idea to pick a financial advisor who is a certified financial planner. Someone with certification has completed specialized training and passed rigorous exams. Once you have discovered each advisor’s qualifications, contact the certifying organizations to find out if there have been any complaints against each professional. If so, find out how the complaints were resolved. Then request a list of satisfied clients who have goals comparable to yours. Contact them to talk about their experiences. Areas Of Expertise Financial products can contribute to your well-being and peace of mind. Some common investing tools include bonds, mutual funds, stocks and

commodities. Weighing risk is essential. Some products will undoubtedly be better for your portfolio than others. An experienced financial advisor can customize a portfolio especially for you. You can also do some research to find a segment of the market that might be a good fit for your situation. Then, look for an advisor who specializes in that investment. For example, if you want to invest in commodities, your potential

advisor should have experience in that market. If he or she doesn’t, then cross that person off your list. Rate Of Success Success rate will also play a prominent role in your decision. Look at the rate of success for each advisor. Has the rate of return on his recommendations outpaced the average market rate of return over time? An advisor with a solid rate of return conducts research to strengthen his clients’ portfolios.

During tough or stagnant economic times, experience will play a vital role. Has your advisor weathered previous economic slowdowns? Do clients thrive in bleak environments? Or have clients taken multiple hits to their portfolios? You should be wary if clients appear to be doing too good during tough times. Someone with an extraordinary success rate might be too good to be true. Fees Or Commissions Inquire about how your advisor is paid for services. Most offer fee-based or commission-based services. It will greatly influence your selection. A commission-based advisor is prone to suggesting financial products that offer a professional commission. It could needlessly increase your exposure to risk. Only use a commission-based advisor if he or she has a proven track record of success and also has your best interest in mind. When you need someone who puts your best interests first, go with a fee-based advisor. He or she will be compensated only for the time spent on serving your portfolio.

Tire Shop Your tires are where the rubber meets the road. You’ve got a lot riding on them. They’re critical to your safety and your vehicle’s performance, affecting everything from steering and balance to letting you enjoy a smooth ride. Because a good set of tires typically lasts between three and four years, depending on your driving habits, you should invest wisely. And that starts with where you get them. Get Help Selecting Your Tires You don’t have to choose the right tire by yourself. Look for a retailer with trained experts to help you make the right choice for your vehicle, driving needs and budget. These experts can help you eliminate the guesswork. They should help you assess the tire size, style and specifications. Each vehicle is built differently. An expert can identify tire options that are manufactured specifically to fit your vehicle’s make and model. And, don’t forget to account for the conditions you drive in – they, too, can help inform the type of tire you need. Identify Your Service Needs Tire retailers should do more than help you pick the right tire. Retailers’ service offerings vary. Determine what your needs are and find a retailer that can meet them. Some questions to keep in mind: Will they have what I need in stock? Does the retailer offer free

a lot of extras. When you consider if the price is right for you, also weigh the overall value of your tire purchase – don’t overlook free flat-tire repair, a tire replacement program, or warranties or guarantees. Convenience is also factor to weigh. A retailer that has multiple locations in your area or even outside of the state can be a big help when you have unexpected service needs. Think about your expectations

guarantees, tire repairs or roadside assistance? Is there an extra fee for disposing of my old tires? Some retailers also offer free inspections of your alignment or brakes, which are often overlooked but critical components to check before hitting the road – now and over the life of your tire. Know The Extra Value You’re Getting Depending on where you shop, the price of your tire can include

of a tire retailer. You might buy tires only every three to four years, but your experience waiting for installation or in-between services – like free air-pressure checks – is also important. You’ll want a retailer who values your time, will get the work you need done quickly and will get you back on the road. Purchasing tires can be intimidating when you’re not an expert, so look for a tire retailer with experts who are friendly and honest, as well as professional and efficient. Consider What Happens Outside The Shop If you have a choice, shouldn’t you support the people who support you? Today, many businesses give back to their communities. Look for a tire retailer that is reputable, but also one that makes a difference in your community. Whether it’s supporting your local schools or hosting a toy drive during the holidays, find a retailer that also takes its service values and professionalism outside the shop. Keep these tips in mind, and you’ll find a tire retailer that meets your needs, making your shopping experience seamless and making you a customer for the life of your tires – and maybe even for life.

How to choose

Kitchen/Bath Design When you want to remodel your kitchen or bathroom, there is no need to feel overwhelmed. Simply focus on three key factors; function, attractiveness and budget. It is always more cost effective to do things right the first time, so don’t be afraid of getting expert advice or seeking help from a professional if you have questions. Functionality The first step is to consider the function of the room. What exactly will you do in the space? Do you eat in your kitchen, or in the dining room? Do you get ready in the bathroom or in your bedroom? Make a list of the activities you perform in each room and prioritize from most to least important. Next, figure out the items you need to store in the space. Do you want the washer and dryer near your kitchen? Is there room to add a closet in your bathroom? Then, create a floor plan taking into consideration traffic flow and storage space. Will you use your kitchen strictly for cooking or will it also be a gathering place? If you enjoy entertaining in your kitchen, you may want to add a bar, game table or even a TV. Décor Is your home contemporary or traditional? You will want any room you design to be coordinated with your home’s overall style theme, including your kitchen or bath. If you are uncertain about style options, look for inspiration in home decor magazines, watch home design shows on TV or check out design websites. Experts suggest that you spend

most of your budget on countertops as they are an easy way to enhance the visual appeal of your kitchen or bath. Consider functionality and aesthetic value of the space. Natural stone is incredibly durable and adds a luxurious feel to any room. Marble, Quartz and Granite are all great choices for countertops, back splashes, vanities, tub surrounds, hearths and more. There are many benefits when using Granite. Granite is naturally clean since it doesn’t harbor bacteria

and is also easy to clean with just mild soap and water. Granite can also be formed into any shape that you like. Adding natural stone to your home can be expensive however it is typically more affordable than you think and it increases your home’s value. In your kitchen, consider using stainless steel appliances. They are easy to clean and complement a variety of design and color schemes. Neutral flooring and paint

are always a good option. Floor coverings can be elegant like stone tiles and hardwood, or lowmaintenance like laminate wood and linoleum. The most important factors to consider are your lifestyle and budget. Small accent pieces can also help boost your design and personality. Simple touches like flowers in a vase, framed photos or candles add style with a very small investment. Budget Remodeling can be expensive. Experts recommend you spend up to 20 percent of your home’s value on remodeling the kitchen, and just less than that on remodeling the bath. You can always save money by adding a fresh coat of paint, resurfacing cabinets instead of replacing them, or adding stylish cabinet and drawer pulls. Add color with new towels and add accent rugs rather than buying new flooring. Installing energy efficient appliances is an investment that boosts visual appeal and pays off down the road. Remember to leave room in your budget to hire a professional for jobs you are not comfortable doing.

Weight Loss Center Obesity is a common problem in our country. For many Americans, it is a threat to their health. Extra weight will shorten your lifespan and create a myriad of physical problems. Losing weight is a challenging process, requiring self-discipline and dedication. When you need help dieting, a weight loss clinic or practitioner with advanced training in Obesity Medicine may be the answer. Trained professionals can educate you on good nutrition, keep you motivated and set a realistic weight loss goal. They will answer your questions and provide accountability. Each clinic has its own approach. Selecting the right program will help you reach your weight loss goals. So many diets create glamorous advertisements using famous people, but that doesn’t mean their plan is the best one for you. Here are some ideas to help you find the best weight loss clinic to meet your needs. Research and Visit First off, research local weight loss clinics and practitioners. Visit their website because it will give you a good idea about price points and programs. Do you have to purchase special meals? Are meetings and appointments required? Make sure these commitments are convenient for you. Think of other information you may need. Many clinics provide online courses, while others hold public weigh-ins. Decide what is comfortable for you. Once you narrow down your choices, visit each facility. Observe

the way staff members talk to clients. All employees should be courteous and competent to everyone, not just potential or new customers. If you have questions, bring a notebook and pencil to take notes. Plans and Referrals Although each clinic will seem as though it has the only plan that works, you must determine if it is the best program for you. Read what others write about the various diet programs. It will help you to know what others

have experienced. Always remember, however, that what works for one person might not work for another. Keep your personal requirements in mind. It should be possible to speak with existing clients about their experiences. Ask the clinic staff for referrals. Clinics with good reputations will be happy to provide you with such a list. Previous clients are often willing to talk about their own experiences, negative and positive. You can also find out if they kept the weight off.

A good weight loss clinic will have a follow-up system to assist you in maintaining a healthy life. They should be able to give you their success rate. Clinics offer different levels of support, such as motivation and nutritional assistance. They might also have stress management techniques that can assist you with lifestyle changes. Do not register with anyone until you check them out with the Better Business Bureau and online reviewers. Understand each clinic’s cancellation policy. If possible, ask for a trial membership. Many weight loss clinics allow trial periods. It offers you an opportunity to try their system without making a financial commitment. Private practitioners will need to see you for a routine assessment and bill for the visit. Use your time at the clinic wisely. Create good nutrition and exercise habits. You are not only there to lose weight, you are developing a healthy, lifelong lifestyle. In the end, a good weight loss clinic can go a long way toward helping you succeed. It is easy to stick with a plan when you have the assistance and support of caring staff. Whether you need to lose a small or large amount of weight, it is important to find a safe, effective way to achieve your goals.

Estate Planner Many people make the mistake of thinking estate planning is only for the rich. The fact is, making a plan is the best thing you can do for your loved ones, regardless of your financial standing.

After all, estate planning isn’t just about protecting heirlooms, it also provides security for your family. Consider these tips for creating a sound, logical estate plan. Do Not Procrastinate Concerning any legal topic, putting off what you should do in advance usually does prove to be much more costly than simply addressing the matter now. It is always best to document how you want your property and other assets handled for when you pass on. People who do not have a plan in place often leave heirs with legal difficulties, inconvenience, unnecessary taxation and family arguments. Consulting with an estate planning professional can having a lasting impact on your legacy. Seek Legal Counsel While some people use online forms to draft a will, most people would benefit from consulting with an estate planning attorney. This experienced professional can

that when you are gone, you may risk leaving your loved ones with an expensive and time consuming probate of your will. However, many alternatives exist. Seek out an attorney who practices Estate Planning regularly to ensure all considerations are met for your end-of-life wishes. The primary assets for most people are their business and home. Take a little time to protect both.

create legal documents with your specific circumstances in mind. It’s true everyone should have a will, regardless of age. But that is only the first step in developing a solid estate plan. You should also create a living will, power of attorney and possibly a trust. Consult an attorney who has experience in developing estate plans for those whose situations

are similar to yours. Do not try to do it alone. Have someone to call if there is a problem. Last Will & Testament The basic Last Will & Testament is not by itself “estate planning.” There is no such thing as a “simple will.” Many other considerations and documents beyond your personal wishes need to be considered and contained within your will. Also remember

Communication Is Key Communicate with your family in general terms about your estate plan. Talking to them about what they can expect could head off estate disputes and heartache. A good estate planner can help you navigate complicated family dynamics and concerns that may accompany this process. The right estate plan and experienced professionals can make your legacy a blessing that your heirs will treasure for the rest of their lives.

Tree Service The weather seems to be getting worse each year. Damage from wind, ice and snow can cause downed power lines from broken limbs. Trimming back trees and removing broken limbs on your property can save you time and trouble. Tree services can help you deal with sick or overgrown trees. They might even be able to save injured trees with pest infestations. Trimming trees can be dangerous, but the right company can do it safely and effectively. Follow these tips to find a qualified, professional tree service in your area: Research Ask friends, family and neighbors. You may know someone who has used a tree service in the past. They can tell you who does the best work. Also, check newspaper, phone and Internet listings. Contact at least three tree services. Inform them of the situation and request a site inspection. It gives you the opportunity to ask about issues and get a feel for the experience and expertise of each company. Take notes so you can compare your results afterward. Find out how long each company has been in business, their experiences, references and whether they are licensed and insured. Check with the Better Business Bureau for outstanding complaints. Even reliable companies may have a few problems. It is how they resolve

the issue that counts. Estimate Request estimates. These figures can vary widely. Some companies are better equipped for certain jobs, so they can offer more competitive pricing. Other companies are slow or may be trying to “fill in” appointment slots with smaller jobs just to keep their crews busy. Don’t choose a company strictly by cost. Tree work is dangerous. Proper equipment, well-trained employees

and insurance create high operating costs. It is worth paying more for peace of mind and excellent service. History Look at a copy of their insurance policy. Coverage should include personal liability, property damage coverage, workers’ compensation and damaged vehicles or home coverage. Inspect their previous work by looking at their portfolio. Each tree service company has a work

style. Verify that it suits your needs. Photos of past work might also be on their website. Prepare Get a detailed written estimate of any work to be performed before signing a contract. Responsible companies will provide detailed descriptions, along with the time and cost for your records. This estimate should also offer information about cleanup expectations. Are logs to be cut up or left for firewood? Will the company haul everything away or leave it for you to manage? Will leaves and twigs be raked up or run through a chipper? If they are removing an entire tree, what will happen to the stump? Verify Verify the workers wear property safety gear. They should be wearing helmets at all times. In addition, they should use face shields or protective glasses and steel-toe boots. The person who climbs the tree should have arborist climbing ropes, specialized safety and climbing gear, the proper saddle, helmet and safety glasses. If you find they aren’t wearing safety gear, contact the company to discuss the matter.

How to choose the

Right Bike for You Investing in alternative transportation can be a great benefit to your health, lifestyle and environment. However, every style of cycle has relative advantages and disadvantages. When choosing, keep your intended use and priorities firmly in mind. Consider the cycle as an investment in your health, vigor and peace of mind. Pick a cycle that is safe and comfortable so that you will ride a lot, and which is reliable so that it is always ready to go. Different Styles Of Cycles The most common bikes are conventional upright bikes. They provide a good height for view and visibility in traffic, but the weight borne on hands and crotch can become very uncomfortable. Therefore a proper fit is critical to minimize discomfort. Other possible downsides to this most popular model are reduced braking potential, dismounting required at stops, and the fact that mounting can be awkward for older and heavier riders. Ground-reach uprights have a seat post offset to the rear giving a geometry that allows legs to reach an ergonomically correct extension while still putting their feet on the ground when stopped and without having to dismount from the seat. Like their conventional cousins, mountain bikes also provide a good platform with larger, knobby tires for use on loose gravel and dirt. For fast riding on smooth, dry roads, look to road (racing) bikes but be wary of the demand for a very hunched over

posture. Recumbent bikes have been hitting the scene lately with a seating position like that of a car. Very comfortable, they also provide good braking and a smooth ride. Recumbent bikes vary a great deal, with different advantages and drawbacks to each type. Compact long-wheelbase recumbent are userfriendly, comfortable, and quick to learn on. High racer recumbents have a very reclined aerodynamic position that makes them fast for strong riders. Another option is an upright “adult” tricycle which can easily carry cargo but can also be slow, tippy, or of poor quality. ‘Tadpole’ style

recumbent trikes, with 2 wheels in front, are compact but the low seats make it difficult for less-athletic persons to mount and dismount. ‘Delta’ style recumbent trikes, with one wheel in front, provide easy mounting and dismounting but tend to be less compact and heavier than tadpoles. For the lightest and fastest ride around, look to high-tech, non-steel lightweight bikes of any style. Carbon fiber and titanium are unbeatable for lightweight durability, but can be very expensive and more difficult to modify, adapt or repair. Quality And Components When picking out alternative transportation, there are many

factors to consider. While disk brakes work well in all conditions, rim brakes are much less effective in rain, mud and dirt, and can grind away at the rim. Flat resistant tires can make a bike much more reliable and stable and semiautomatic, internally geared, hubs can make shifting easier. Cheap bikes tend to have steel wheel rims (often chrome plated), plain or galvanized steel spokes, single-piece crank sets and loose-ball bearings so can become unusable within months of purchase. Cheap children’s bikes become unsafe very quickly, with few retaining functional brakes. Quality bikes tend to have aluminum alloy wheels, stainless steel spokes, three-piece cranksets, and sealed bearings on hubs, headset, bottom bracket and pedals, and come with a lifetime frame warranty. Where To Buy Cycles purchased from a local bike shop can be maintained by the bike shop while ‘disposable’ bikes purchased from a big box retailer will not be maintained by the store and may not even be maintainable by a bike shop. Be sure to consider these factors, in addition to price and selection, when shopping for your best bike.

Physician Finding a personal physician is an important step toward a healthier lifestyle. The best physicians offer you a cooperative relationship in an effort to get to know you and guide you in making good healthcare decisions. They provide evidence-based solutions to health issues. Your primary care doctor should be able to understand your medical needs, as well as offer you appropriate referrals should you need a specialist. He or she should also participate in a call group that offers you 24/7 phone coverage. Here are some elements to consider when you are searching for a new doctor. Insurance Sometimes, your choice of doctors will be limited by your health insurance carrier. Insurance companies have contracts with individuals or group practices. It is possible that using a doctor outside your insurer’s primary care network may subject you to out-of pocket expenses. Some insurance carriers do not impose restrictions on your choice of physicians. If you have this kind of policy, look to your friends, family and colleagues to find potential doctors in your area. Meeting Your Needs Experts recommend selecting a general practitioner to serve as your primary care physician. This professional might be a Family Medicine practitioner or an Internal Medicine doctor. Under some circumstances, it is better to select a doctor practicing within a particular specialty. For example, women might feel more

Eligible in his or her specialty. This licensing body will also tell you if he or she has any pending disciplinary action or complaints. Not every doctor accepts new patients. Once you have collected a list of possible physicians, contact them to make sure they will accept new patients, as well as the insurance you carry. Ideally, your first visit will include a routine physical examination and documentation of your medical history.

comfortable with an obstetrician/ gynecologist (OB/GYN) as a primary care physician. A pediatrician might be the primary care physician for children. Seniors could even have a geriatric specialist for their primary care physician. Ask For Referrals Friends, family and other trusted sources are the best way to find a new doctor. People will

gladly give referrals when they have had positive experiences with their health care providers. The American Medical Association or other professional physicians’ organizations in your area will be another useful resource. Prior to making a final decision, always confirm that your physician has a current license to practice with the state medical board and is Board Certified or Board-

Looking for a Medical Provider?

Convenience Convenience is another important factor when choosing a physician. His or her office should be easily accessible from your home or workplace. Ask where your physician performs or refers diagnostic tests and procedures. Some doctors might use a separate facility rather than their own offices. Finally, inquire how long it usually takes to book an appointment. When an emergency arises, you will want to know that your new doctor can meet you quickly.

How to choose a

Dentist Choosing the right dentist will go a long way toward helping you maintain your health and appearance. Whether you need a routine cleaning or a complex dental procedure, finding the right dentist will save you time and money. It is vital that you find a dentist who makes you feel comfortable; someone who will help you improve your dental health in a safe and clean environment. Research Finding a dentist near your home or workplace will help you make your appointments on time. As well, their office hours should accommodate your schedule. So how should you start your search? First off, ask your social network for recommendations. Friends, family and colleagues can be a great resource. Odds are that if your friend likes their dentist, you will like them too. You can also see if there are dentists who are members of your clubs, place of worship, or recreational organizations. Having mutual interests with your dentist makes visits much more comfortable. Searching the Internet for dental offices in your area will also help. Professionals often have their own websites, which include backgrounds on those working there. The website may also tell you about how they handle procedures and appointments, as well as specialized services they offer. Verify Check the state dental licensing board to make certain that that he or she has earned the necessary degree (D.D.S. or D.M.D.) from a reputable school and are current on all licensing and continuing educational requirements. Ideally, the dentist will be familiar with the latest dental

technologies and trends. Membership in professional organizations like the American Dental Association (ADA) or Academy of General Dentistry (AGD) is a good indication of a dentist’s commitment to keeping up with changes in the profession. These organizations have websites with lists of member dentists that you can search. Once you have gathered a list, begin calling each prospective dentist. You can talk to a receptionist or other staff person if the dentist is unavailable. Ask if the dental office provides emergency services. If you break a

tooth or are experiencing dental pain, you want treatment right away. A true dental emergency is if you have oral swelling or have a tooth knocked out. In this case you need a dentist right away. Lead time for appointments is another consideration. Some offices might be able to see you right away, while others may have a three-week wait time. Cost If you are currently covered by dental insurance, you may want to contact your insurance company to find a dentist in your network. Even if your insurance doesn’t have any local network dentists, don’t let that stop you from seeing a dentist. Most dentists will at least file an insurance claim for you even if they aren’t in your network. You don’t have to have dental insurance to see a dentist. Most preventative services are very affordable. Dental insurance plans have limited benefits and a yearly maximum amount so some who wait until they have dental insurance to see a dentist often need much more dental work than their insurance will pay for. If you have no dental insurance, inquire about payment plans. Many dentists offer discounts for payment in full at time of service with cash or check (if they don’t have the added

expense of billing insurance or running a credit card). The office should give you an estimate before performing any work. Many dentists offer dental financing programs to help pay for larger treatment plans. Visit When a dentist meets all of your requirements, visit the office. The staff should be professional and friendly. Every dentist should be willing to answer all of your questions. Some people are afraid of dentists or pain. If you have any concerns, communicate with the staff and dentist. Many professionals are willing to go above and beyond to help you work through these issues. The dentist and their staff should review your medical and dental history. They should tell you about future treatment and prevention options. A quality dentist will help you feel comfortable during your visit. If you experience anything less, cross that person off your list. The best dentists offer friendly, happy dental experiences. Healthy teeth are extremely important to your overall health. A confident smile can make your life much more enjoyable. Finding a good dentist is like finding a friend who consistently brings out your best smile.

How to choose an

Attorney The right attorney can make a big difference between winning and losing your case. No matter what legal issue you are facing, you can find an attorney who matches your needs and advocates strongly for your side of the case. Don’t settle for a second rate lawyer. The outcome of your legal issue is just too important. Here are some factors to keep in mind when choosing a lawyer. recommendations from previous clients.

Affordability Quality should always come first when it comes to attorneys. Do not settle for inferior legal representation. If you are facing a criminal case and cannot afford an attorney, ask for a court-appointed lawyer. Taxpayers pay these representatives to help people in need. A courtappointed lawyer can provide you with valuable assistance. Also, never hire an attorney who has been disbarred in any state. Relevant Issues The legal issue you are facing will determine the attorney you need. For example, people who have been arrested for driving while intoxicated will require a criminal lawyer who has experience handling DUIs. Real estate transactions are best handled by a real estate lawyer. Many lawyers specialize in a variety of legal issues. It is vital that you hire a lawyer who practices in the type of law you need.

Case History Case histories might help you gauge an attorney’s competency. Websites will help you determine a lawyer’s success rate. You can also find out if an attorney you are considering has a high settlement rate. Ask attorneys directly about their case histories. Any lawyer with a good track record will readily provide the information.

References Sometimes, finding a great attorney can be as simple as asking your family or friends for referrals. If you are getting a divorce, look for people in your social network who have experienced that issue. People are usually happy to share their experiences and opinions. You can also ask attorneys for references. A quality professional should be able to provide you with

Online Ratings Other websites rate attorneys. They are also a great resource for client reviews. Don’t give positive or negative reviews much credence. Not everyone is honest nor is everyone a liar. Focus on comments about a lawyer’s availability, personality and results. Your attorney needs to be in your corner. You should not have to struggle to get into contact with him. Always keep in mind that gruff lawyers are sometimes the best

ones. While no attorney should treat you rudely, you are paying for their services. Tough, evenhanded attorneys can be an asset. A personable lawyer is great, but if that person has a terrible success rate, choose another. Consultation Take advantage of any free consultations. Most attorneys offer them. The meeting will allow you to discover if the lawyers is a good match for you. If you feel discomfort during the meeting, do not hire the attorney. Simply thank them for their time. If your initial consultation is not free, look elsewhere. Needing an attorney can be frightening. You might feel stressed and uncertain. Finding a lawyer you can trust will give you confidence that you can resolve your situation successfully. Ask questions during your free consultation. Expect forthright answers. If you don’t feel satisfied, find another person to represent you. There are plenty of qualified attorneys who are willing to help.

How to choose a

Coin Dealer/Gold Buyer Collecting coins is a fascinating hobby for all ages. A coin is an excellent way to learn about history and can also be a great investment if you purchase coins that increase in value. But it is not a simple hobby because of all the factors that impact the value of each individual coin, from its history to its quality and scarcity. If you are considering starting a coin collection, here are some things to keep in mind. First, research is important for coin collectors. Thankfully, there are lots of books that can help you understand what you are buying or selling. Coin shops and the local library have books that can help you get started. It is important to learn what you like and discover as much as you can about a coin before acquiring it. You don’t need to have a lot of money to start. Check your pocket change for different dates and mint marks or different state and national park quarters. If you have inherited coins, or have received them as gifts, educate yourself on their background. Coins with certain dates and mint marks are rarer than others. These factors contribute to the value of a coin. Knowing how a coin is graded is essential if you collect coins. This system assigns a value based on the coin’s condition. Never clean your coins, although novices are often tempted to polish their coins. Cleaning or polishing a coin can destroy its value by removing the original finish. Real collectors prize coins that are as close to their original condition as possible. Asking questions is the best way to learn. Even long time collectors will have questions and need answers. Your local coin shop can help you and/or

refer you to someone else. Most areas have coin collector clubs that can be found online. Develop a relationship with your local coin dealer. Visiting can be a fun way to spend time, and once a dealer gets to know your interests, they can call you when something comes in that they know you would be interested in. Buying Gold and Silver Bullion Whether you are buying one ounce or 100 ounces of precious metals, you need to know the basics. Traditionally, precious metals have been used to store wealth in good times and bad. Precious metals are weighed in troy ounces not avoirdupois ounces (used to weigh food, people, mail, etc.). There are 28 grams in an avoirdupois ounce and 31.1 grams in a troy ounce. Most precious metals are sold in bars or coins typically ranging from 1 gram to 100 ounces and are stamped with the weight and purity (e.g. 1 Troy ounce, .999 fine). For many people,

buying in increments of one ounce is the most economical. If you buy metal in fractions of an ounce, the premiums are generally higher. Pricing is often based on spot prices linked to the stock market. Popular gold, silver, platinum and palladium coins such as U.S. Eagles and Canadian Maples are minted at national mints. Other well known, private mints currently produce or have produced both bars and coins. Additionally, U.S. coins, dimes, quarters and halves from 1964 or earlier contain 90% silver (0.715 oz. per dollar face value). When you are ready to invest in precious metals, you will want to find a dealer you can trust and who has been in business for many years. While lower prices can sometimes be found elsewhere, you will usually get better customer service and competitive pricing at a local dealer. Selling Scrap Gold and Silver In recent years, interest in selling

gold and silver has increased sharply due to higher prices. A growing number of Americans are selling broken or unwanted jewelry, gold or silver necklaces, rings and other items for quick cash. But this popular trend has been accompanied by less scrupulous people who lack experience in determining the proper value of these items. Jewelers typically pay with store credit, but precious metals dealers are more likely to pay for the metal only and not the stones. Fly-by-night operators will often offer far less than the melt value of the gold in these items, counting on your lack of knowledge. Infomercials have also flooded the airwaves with ads offering “immediate cash for your unwanted gold.” Always exercise caution when selling gold or silver. The purity of gold affects the price you will get. Remember, when the dealer weighs your scrap, it will be based on troy ounces (not the same as your scale at home). Take your items to more than one reputable jeweler or precious metals dealer in your area for their opinion. It pays to use a local business. There are many reputable gold and silver buyers doing business today that will pay you for the market value of your piece.

How to choose an

Orthodontist Many men and women would like to see the appearance of their teeth improved. The truth is, few people are born with a perfect smile. An orthodontist can help you gain confidence, health, and happiness. By using modern technology, these trained professionals can make any mouth look and feel amazing. A good orthodontist will provide a customized treatment delivered with compassion and care. Service Because treatment takes time, the relationship you have with your orthodontist and the environment around you will make for a great experience. A good orthodontic office will make you excited for your appointments. Many will have contests within the office to make the experience more fun and exciting. Teamwork is very important in orthodontics, the doctor and assistants work as part of a treatment team, therefore you will form good relationships with everyone in the office. You also need someone who can communicate clearly. Listening to questions and answering them clearly is part of an orthodontist’s job. High quality orthodontists see you as a valued client and treat you as such. They will contribute during the phases of treatment and have undergone rigorous training. Orthodontic treatment is a significant investment and should be a positive experience. The right mix of education, certification, experience and personality should make all the work worthwhile in

should be up to date regarding new ways to treat their patients. Continuing education is very important in the orthodontic field, and your orthodontist should be knowledgeable of all treatment options.

the end. Orthodontic treatment does not have an age limit and is beneficial for everyone. The optimal age for an initial consultation is seven, however, 25% of orthodontic patients are adults and this number is growing. Technology Ask each prospective orthodontist about the technologies he or she uses. There are several systems, each quite

different from the other. Each professional should explain the trade-offs between one system and another. Each has advantages and disadvantages. Have them explain why they prefer one method over another. Innovations are always happening in the field of orthodontics. Ask your orthodontist what is happening in the orthodontic field. He or she

Aesthetic Options Adults, professionals, and teens can receive treatment without having it hinder their appearance. Orthodontists can use clear aesthetic brackets with traditional braces which blend in and are less noticeable than metal brackets. Another option is InvisalignÂŽ, which is a system of clear aligner trays that help in aligning teeth. They are great options for those wanting an aesthetic/ nearly invisible treatment. The best results in orthodontics are achieved when a strong partnership is obtained between the patient and the orthodontist. Make sure you work as a team to provide the best outcome possible. If this is successfully accomplished you will be proud of your new smile and look back fondly at your time spent at the orthodontist.

Audiologist If you or a loved one has experienced hearing loss, you are not alone. More than 40 million Americans have some form of hearing impairment.

Many people don’t realize they have a problem. On average, it takes seven years before someone seeks help after first noticing a problem. The good news is that hearing loss is not difficult to treat. Diagnosis The first step is to visit your primary care doctor. The doctor can determine if there is a physical reason for the hearing impairment, such as an infection or ear wax buildup. If your physician determines your hearing loss is not the result of a medical problem, she may give you the names of several audiologists or refer you to an ear, nose, and throat physician for further testing. Be sure to research which professionals will accept your insurance. Research Audiologists have a Master’s or Doctorate in the field of hearing diagnostics and rehabilitation. Also, the audiologists may have a specialty. For example, some professionals see elderly people, others may focus on helping young people. The audiologist might have

a special skill, such as cochlear implants. Consult your friends and family who have experienced hearing loss. Perhaps they have seen an audiologist in your area. They may give you an honest assessment about the quality of service and demeanor of the staff.

conduct a preliminary interview. They should inform you about the audiologist’s background and specialization, along with the wait time for new patients. Ensure that the professional has the proper license and reliable references to patients he has treated.

Interview When you have narrowed your choices down to two or three professionals, call their offices and

Plan Before making an appointment, consider your goals. You might want a complete hearing

evaluation. Perhaps you need a fitting for a new hearing aid or a replacement. Or maybe you need more information about ear care and preventing hearing loss. It is usually impossible to resolve an issue with one appointment. You will likely need follow up visits for tests, consultations and fittings, if necessary. If you have experienced hearing loss, your relationship with your audiologist should be ongoing. Make sure you are comfortable with this person. If not, keeping looking; you will need to have a rapport with this doctor. Finally, it is never too early to have a child’s ears checked by a qualified practitioner. Children who have a hard time hearing will have a difficult time in school until you resolve the matter. Consider having your hearing checked. There is no shame in getting help for hearing impairment. These problems do not go away by themselves. Visiting an audiologist can improve the quality of your life.

Physical Therapist Physical therapy helps alleviate pain and promotes wellness. It focuses on treating musculoskeletal disorders. For example, people with back pain can receive physical therapy to strengthen the core muscles in their back. Not only will they feel better, patients may also emerge from physical therapy with a restored, functional body. Most patients visit physical therapists for chronic pain from injuries or if they recently underwent surgery. People with pain in their backs, knees, neck, shoulder or other joints can receive benefits from finding a physical therapist. Benefits Insurance companies often agree about these benefits. Most companies require patients to try physical therapy before turning to expensive surgery to fix the problem. In fact, physical therapy can actually negate the need for surgical treatment. After surgery, physical therapy might serve as part of the aftercare and recovery process. For example, when you have surgery to repair a rotator cuff, a therapist can play a huge part in a successful recovery. People with degenerative disc problems in their backs will benefit from a physical therapy regimen. It can help ease pressure and pain in their lower back. Normally, a problem like this requires surgery, but physical therapy can help patients regain a full range of motion. Physical therapists also provide the best remedy for other injuries. Someone with a reattached finger will need to practice with a physical therapist to regain feeling and movement. A person who has been incapacitated for an extended period may need physical therapy to regain their functionality. Physical Therapy also helps treat

balance disorders, vertigo and dizziness and helps people recover after surgeries. It can teach you how to perform every day activities and hobbies without pain. Compare Insurance companies will likely have requirements. You may have to choose a therapy that is in-network, rather than out-ofnetwork. Your insurance may also limit the amount of visits they cover.

Once you have narrowed your search to a few potential candidates, inquire about the physical therapist’s previous work history. Don’t be afraid of asking directly about their success rates and potential problems. Also, contact your state board of physical therapy to see if any complaints have been filed against the professional you are considering. The best physical therapists will

provide emotional support as well. Treatment and recovery is very hard work, especially for patients in severe pain. When you feel exhausted, the physical therapist will provide motivation. They will not allow you to make excuses. Instead, a physical therapist will push you to your limits, which will aid in your full recovery. The therapist will inspire you to regain your full independence; this is especially important for elderly people who have problems getting around on their own. It is vital that you feel comfortable with whichever physical therapist you choose. This professional may have to examine sensitive areas of your body to check for swelling or heat. They may also massage your muscles as part of therapy. You should feel at ease and safe during this process. The physical therapist will likely provide you with followthrough exercises at home. It is very important you act on her recommendations. It will help you recover faster. With the assistance of a good physical therapist and your own hard work, you can often make recover fully and enjoy life again.

Liquor Store There is no better way to kick back and relax than to surround yourself with good friends and fine beverages. Whether you are planning a celebration or a quiet night among friends, finding a good liquor store can make a big difference. The best shops will provide advice, knowledge and opportunities to buy quality products. WIDE VARIETY Look for a store that matches your personal preferences. Some shops carry local beer selections from nearby microbreweries. Others stock wines and high-end imported rum or scotch. The best stores will have a mixture of popular products, along with some new, rare or exotic offerings. The liquor shop should have a variety of price points. From the most expensive to the lowerprice selections, all could have an important place in a well-stocked liquor cabinet. Mixed drinks or baked recipes, for example, don’t always have to include the very best brands because the flavor will be diluted with other ingredients. If you are planning to drink the liquor by itself, however, it is much better to look for a quality brand – even if it is more expensive.

OVERALL EXPERIENCE Convenience is always a factor, but it isn’t the only thing to consider. Ideally, the shop should be clean, organized and in a safe neighborhood. The best liquor stores take pride in having a tidy appearance, vast selection and sophisticated staff. When you find those things in a liquor store, you can enjoy the taste of sweet success.

EXPERT ADVICE If you entertain frequently, your liquor purchases may be significant. The bigger investment you make, the more important it is to get expert advice. The best liquor stores will guide you into finding the right product for a specific use or occasion. You should be able to describe the event, along with the flavors or

tastes you prefer. Listen to their advice. Good, personalized service may be worth traveling a longer distance. In addition, if you use the same store frequently, they will get to know your preferences and needs. Your experiences will keep improving with each visit.

Finally, consider the overall shopping experience. You’ll want to find a store that’s convenient – typically either close to your home or near your route home from work – but that’s just the start. A properly managed store will take pride in its appearance, selection and employees. Look for a business that stands out from the crowd. If you can find all those things in one store, your enjoyment and relaxation will be even sweeter.

Build A Home Now is a great time to build your dream home. it to a permanent mortgage once the home is completed. Do some comparison shopping at banks, credit unions and mortgage brokers for the best financing solution. You can also ask your builder for recommendations. He will likely have some options because his livelihood depends on his clients securing financing for construction loans. Your builder may even help you avoid pitfalls.

These days, home prices are affordable in many parts of the nation. Labor and construction costs have stabilized, and interest rates are near historic lows. When you are considering the next step toward building a home that’s all your own – from design to finish – here are some things to keep in mind. Custom Or Not Your first step is determining which kind of builder you want: custom or production. Both builders have advantages and disadvantages. Production builders are the most popular. Many people believe that production builders are affordable and fast. These builders have several floor plans they use and some level of interior and exterior customization. When using them, you may be limited in the location of your home, how much the floor plan can be customized

and the kind of quality you can expect. With a custom builder, you limit is only your imagination and budget. While a custom home can cost more than a production or “tract” home, buyers prefer it because they can build on their own land and decide every single aspect of the construction process.

Financing Depending on your situation, you may need to secure construction financing in order to build your home. Construction financing usually consists of more than one loan. One loan will pay for the construction itself – often releasing money to the builder in stages as processes are finished – and then converting

The Best Builder When selecting a builder, the most important factor is a good reputation. Highquality builders are known for reliability and craftsmanship. They have likely worked in construction for years. Drive by some of the homes they’ve built and, if possible, talk to their owners to get an idea about what you can expect. When you find an outstanding builder and line up a good financing plan, then you can watch your dream home become a reality.

RV Lifestyle Many people dream of owning a recreational vehicle. An RV allows you to ride freely around the country. You can choose how and where you choose to spend your time. It’s all about freedom, which is what drives many people to become RV owners. Every person has their own vision of an RV lifestyle, from living in an RV resort to camping in the wilderness or driving around the country visiting family. What do you want to do in your RV? Destination Before purchasing a new RV, think of your goals. There are all the destinations you want to see: national parks, lakes, and maybe even big cities. But you should also consider your mental and emotional destination. How do you want to wake up each day? Do you want to build relationships with family, friends and old acquaintances? Having a clear idea of what you want to do in your life will help you during the purchasing process. It will make the decisions much easier. Find the Right Vehicle While RV stands for “recreational vehicle,” it might as well stand for “right vehicle.” Everyone’s definition of right vehicle will be different, of course. It’s a good thing that RVs come in all shapes and sizes. You can purchase a tiny model based on

minivans to a full-size commercial vehicle as big as some houses. You should also consider fuel efficiency and reliability. Those two factors will also play a big part in how you enjoy your RV-centered life. Visit RV shows and local dealerships to understand the market and your price range. Aside from the functional aspects of the RV, also think about the operational costs. Every vehicle needs routine maintenance. Find out what costs will be covered under your warranty or maintenance plan. It will help you

plan your purchase. Full- or Part-Time? Will you be a full- or part-time RVer? Most owners begin their new lifestyle part-time. They may take their vehicle on the road for family vacations or fishing trips. Many people decide to become full-time RVers, which means moving out of their permanent home and spending their lives on the road. The more time you spend in your RV, the more carefully you need to consider your purchase. For full-timers, it will feel like you are buying real estate. After

all, your home is an important investment in your future. Some people appreciate having a regular home, a permanent plot of land where you can return, even if only for a few weeks or months each year. Others desire the freedom that comes with life on the road. Selling your home and eliminating property tax, utilities and worries that go with all of that can be a relief for some people. It’s your decision. Accessories and Supplies RVs come with accessories and supplies that will make your trips enjoyable. You may want a satellite TV, Internet access and upscale furnishings to complete your RV. Other people want a simple vehicle. They prefer to minimize their equipment and gear to keep themselves happy while on the road. It all depends on your budget and preferences. Your RV lifestyle can be everything you want it to be. Whether you want a basic motor home in the woods or an upscale land yacht, owning an RV is all about making your hopes and dreams come true.

Retirement Community These days, more Americans are remaining active into their retirement years. They are searching for communities that match their lifestyles and goals for relaxed living. If you are in the market for a retirement community, there are plenty of things to consider. This retirement community will hopefully become your home. It is important to choose a vibrant place, with plenty of parking and recreational activities. Here are some aspects to consider before making a financial commitment to a living facility. Community Activities and Parking Many senior citizens want to keep their energy levels up during their retirement years. They are more health conscious and see how an active lifestyle leads to a long life. Many seniors enjoy golf, tennis, swimming and walking. Any prospective retirement community should have easy access to such activities. Other seniors enjoy arts and crafts, board games, dancing and organized activities. Taking part in social events can provide opportunities to make new friends. Research what kinds of social events are organized within the retirement community. Also, find out if the community has ample opportunities for residents to travel to theaters, museums or shopping malls together. Parking is another important factor when choosing a retirement community. Most people enjoy having family and friends visit, so parking is a necessity. Medical Care Facilities Retirement communities should be easily accessible to emergency personnel.

Know the location of the closest hospitals, doctors, ambulance services and other personnel. You may wish to restrict your search to communities located near your preferred physician or other service providers. Any prospective community should have a formal emergency plan in place. In addition, check to see if the retirement unit has custom safety features, such as railings in the bathrooms and entranceways. Pet Policies Pet policies are another feature to consider when investigating potential retirement communities. Some facilities will allow you to bring your pet to live with you while others will not. So if you have a pet you don’t want to leave behind, you may be able to bring it with you. Many communities now recognize the health benefits of having pets. Additionally, a park or nearby dog walking area will benefit you and your animal companion, particularly if your pet requires daily exercise. Taking a walk each day will benefit both of you. Churches, Libraries and Schools Consider how close the community is to schools, sports facilities, and other sites that produce a large amount of traffic volumes and noise

levels. Many people prefer to live in less congested, quiet areas during their latter years. Also, think about where the nearest libraries and churches are located, as well as public transportation. Consideration is also given to places that have their own library filled with a variety of good books. Also check to see if the mobile library comes to the facility. Ask whether the community provides its own transportation for residents. Some facilities have their own fleet of minivans and buses. It is extremely helpful for seniors who no longer drive and need to do some routine personal shopping. Centrally Located Being centrally located and within walking distance to grocery stores, drug stores, health clubs and schools that offer adult learning is essential to any retirement community. Being located on a bus route is also essential to those seniors who no longer drive. Service Coordination Service coordinators help senior citizens and their families make sense of the mass of information regarding government programs, health insurance and many kinds of care available for those who need it. They develop knowledge

of community systems which help promote health and independence. Service coordinators become familiar with the residents in their retirement communities and are frequently the first to realize that a resident is undergoing a change and may need to seek medical help. With their awareness of the retirement community and the resources that can help its residents, service coordinators are cost savers, sometimes life savers, and certainly promote quality of life and independence. Whenever you are checking out a possible retirement community for yourself, be sure to ask about a service coordinator. The Community Current residents will give you a feel for their level of satisfaction with the community. Talk to them about their experiences and seek candid reviews of the amenities and staff. After all, it is important you feel confident that you have selected a retirement community that fits your personal needs and lifestyles. By taking the time to research multiple facilities, you will undoubtedly find a warm, welcoming facility. You will be able to build lasting friendships and gain the support you need to have fun during your retirement.
