efreshing the paint around your home is a quick and easy way to give your house a whole new look — and an inexpensive upgrade.
Spring is a great time of year to paint both the interior rooms of your home and the exterior because of its low humidity in many climates. After all, spring and renewal go hand in hand. There is a lot to know about paint, especially if you’ve never taken on a large-scale job by yourself. Follow these tips when tackling your next painting project. DO prep your area. Put away anything you don’t want paint on. Don’t forget to lay drop cloths on your floors. This is no different with your exterior — especially as you work over your entryway or garage. The last thing you will want is paint sprays or splatters on clean asphalt. DO buy test jars. Once you’ve narrowed down your color preferences to two or three, purchase samples of each and try them out. You won’t get a true sense of a color until it is on a wall, cabinet or on the side of your house.
DON’T forget to calculate how much paint you’ll need for your project. Even if you are picking from a standard color and not color matching from another item or photo, it is always best to get your paint mixed at one time. DO open a window when you paint indoors — even if it’s chilly. The additional airflow will help your paint dry faster. If you are painting outdoors be sure to start in the shade. DO some research on they appropriate brushes and rollers for your project. If you don’t know, the associate at the paint counter or someone at your local hardware store will be able to steer you in the right direction. DON’T rush. Take your time and you will avoid spills or touch ups later. Depending on the project, you might need to invest in at least two coats, which takes time to do properly.

The Color of Money A fresh coat of paint in the right color may help sell a home for more money. Zillow’s 2017 Paint Color Analysis looked at more than 32,000 photos from sold homes around the country to see how certain paint colors impacted their sale price on average, when compared to similar homes with white walls. According to Zillow, homes with walls painted in shades of blue or light gray may sell for as much as a $5,400 premium. Homes with blue bathrooms, often found in hues of powder blue or light periwinkle, sold for $5,440 more than expected, the highest sales premium of all colors analyzed. A home’s exterior color also may have an impact on its sale price. Homes painted in “greige,” a mix of light gray and beige, sold for $3,496 more than similar homes painted in a medium brown or with tan stucco. For a pop of color, homes with front doors painted in shades of dark navy blue to slate gray sold for $1,514 more. Some colors may actually deter buyers. Homes with darker, more style-specific walls like terracotta dining rooms sold for $2,031 less than expected. However, a lack of color may have the biggest negative impact as homes with white bathrooms sold for an average of $4,035 below similar homes.
